The physico-chemical, photo-physical and micro-structural properties responsible for the strikingly different photocatalytic behavior of combustion-prepared TiO2 (c.TiO2) and Degussa P25 (d.TiO2) samples are elucidated in this study. Electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction micrographs revealed that the two samples exhibited different morphologies. The grains of c.TiO2 were spherical and comprised of 5-6 nm size primary particle. On the other hand, d.TiO2 consisted of large (0.5-3.0 mu m) size and irregular shape aggregates having primary particles of 15-40 nm cross-sectional diameter. The ESR study revealed that the presence of certain defect states in c.TiO2 helped in stabilization of O-. and Ti3+-OH type species during room-temperature UV-irradiation. No such paramagnetic species were however formed over d.TiO2 under similar conditions. C1s and Ti 2p XPS spectra provide evidence for the presence of some lattice vacancies in c.TiO2 and also for the bulk Ti4+ -> Ti3+ conversion during its UV-irradiation. Compared to d.TiO2, c.TiO2 displayed considerably higher activity for discoloration of methyl orange but very poor activity for splitting of water, both under UV and visible light radiations. This is attributed to enhanced surface adsorption of dye molecules over c.TiO2, because of its textural features and also the presence of photo-active ion-radicals. On the other hand, the poor activity of c.TiO2 for water splitting is related to certain defect-induced inter-band charge trapping states in the close vicinity of valence and conduction bands of c.TiO2, as revealed by thermoluminescence spectroscopy. Further, the dispersion of nanosize gold particles gave rise to augmented activity of both the catalysts, particularly for water splitting. This is explained by the promotional role of Au-0 or Au-0/TiO2 interfacial sites in the adsorption and charge-adsorbate interaction processes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the generation of coherent optical phonons in spin-frustrated pyrochlore single crystals Dy2Ti2O7, Gd2Ti2O7, and Tb2Ti2O7 using femtosecond laser pulses (65 fs, 1.57 eV) in degenerate time-resolved transmission experiments as a function of temperature from 4 to 296 K. At 4 K, two coherent phonons are observed at similar to 5.3 THz (5.0 THz) and similar to 9.3 THz (9.4 THz) for Dy2Ti2O7 (Gd2Ti2O7), whereas three coherent phonons are generated at similar to 5.0, 8.6, and 9.7 THz for Tb2Ti2O7. In the case of spin-ice Dy2Ti2O7, a clear discontinuity is observed in the linewidths of both the coherent phonons as well as in the phase of lower-energy coherent phonon mode, indicating a subtle structural change at 110 K. Another important observation is a phase difference of pi between the modes in all the samples, thus suggesting that the driving forces behind the generation of these modes could be different in nature, unlike a purely impulsive or displacive mechanism.

While the adsorption of dioxygen at a clean Ni(110) surface gives rise to two O(1s) features at 531 and 530 eV assigned to O-(a) and O2-(a) type species respectively, coadsorption of dioxygen and water mixtures result in the additional formation of hydroxyl species characterized by an O(1s) peak at 532.3 eV. The latter is attributed to the oxygen induced dissociation of water via a low energy pathway involving the O-(a)-type species. The proportions of the O-(a) and the hydroxyl species are greater for small O-2/H2O ratios and lower temperatures (120 K). With increase in temperature, the relative surface concentrations of the O-(a) and the hydroxyl species decrease while there is an increase in the concentration of the oxidic O2-(a) species. Thus, the surface concentrations of both the hydroxyl and the O2-(a) species depend critically on the presence of O- type species. Above 300K the surface chemistry in the main involves the conversion of O- to O2- species via the hydroxyl species.

Anatase titania nanotubes (TNTs) have been synthesized from P25 TiO2 powder by alkali hydrothermal method followed by post annealing. The microstructure analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the formation of anatase nanotubes with a diameter of 9-10 nm. These NTs are used to make photo anode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Layer by layer deposition with curing of each layer at 350 C is employed to realize films of desired thickness. The performance of these cells is studied using photovoltaic measurements. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to quantitatively analyze the effect of thickness on the performance of these cells. These studies revealed that the thickness of TiO2 has a pronounced impact on the cell performance and the optimum thickness lies in the range of 10-14 mu m. In comparison to dye solar cells made of P25, TNTs based cells exhibit an improved open circuit voltage and fill factor (FF) due to an increased electron lifetime, as revealed by EIS analysis. Adsorption of dioxygen at clean Ni(110) and Ni(100) surfaces gives rise to two prominent features in the O(1s) spectra at 530 and 531 eV due to O2- and O- type species, respectively. Interaction of ammonia with a Ni(100)-O surface where theta(oxygen) < 0.1 ML favors the dissociation of NH3 giving NHn, (n = 1, 2) and N(a) species. This is accompanied by a decrease in the intensity of the 531 eV feature. On the other hand. a Ni(100)-O surface where the oxygen species are mainly of the O2- type is unreactive, Coadsorption studies of NH3-O-2 mixtures show that at Ni(110) surfaces the uptake of both oxygen and ammonia increase with the proportion of oxygen in the NH3-O-2 mixture. The surface concentrations of the O- species and the NHn species also increase with the increase in the O-2/NH3 ratio while the slope of the plot of sigma(N) versus sigma(O-) is around unity. The results demonstrate the high surface reactivity of the O- species and its role in the dissociation of ammonia. Based on these observations, the possibility of the formation of a surface complex between ammonia and oxygen (specifically O-) is suggested. Results from vibrational spectroscopic studies of the coadsorption of NH3-O-2 mixtures are consistent with those from core-level spectroscopic studies.

Nebulized spray pyrolysis of metal-organic precursors in methanol solution has been employed to prepare powders of TiO2, ZrO2 and PbZr0.5Ti0.5O3 (PZT). This process ensures complete decomposition of the precursors at relatively low temperatures. The particles have been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as X-ray diffraction. As prepared, the particles are hollow agglomerates of diameter 0.1-1.6 mu m, but after heating to higher temperatures the ultimate size of the particles comprising the agglomerates are considerably smaller (0.1 mu m or less in diameter) and crystalline.

Titanium dioxide films have been deposited using DC magnetron sputtering technique onto well-cleaned p-silicon substrates at an oxygen partial pressure of 7 x 10(-5) mbar and at a sputtering pressure (Ar + O-2) Of I X 10(-3) mbar. The deposited films were calcinated at 673 and 773 K. The composition of the films as analyzed using Auger electron spectroscopy reveals the stoichiometry with an 0 and Ti ratio 2.08. The influence of post-deposition annealing at 673 and 773 K on the structural properties of the titanium dioxide thin films have been studied using XRD and Raman scattering. The structure of the films deposited at the ambient was found to be amorphous and the films annealed at temperature 673 K and above were crystalline with anatase structure. The lattice constants, grain size, microstrain and the dislocation density of the film are calculated and correlated with annealing temperature. The Raman scattering study was performed on the as-deposited and annealed samples and the existence of Raman active modes A(1g), B-1g and E-g corresponding to the Raman shifts are studied and reported. The improvement of crystallinity of the TiO2 films was also studied using Raman scattering studies. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The focus of this paper is on designing useful compliant micro-mechanisms of high-aspect-ratio which can be microfabricated by the cost-effective wet etching of (110) orientation silicon (Si) wafers. Wet etching of (110) Si imposes constraints on the geometry of the realized mechanisms because it allows only etch-through in the form of slots parallel to the wafer's flat with a certain minimum length. In this paper, we incorporate this constraint in the topology optimization and obtain compliant designs that meet the specifications on the desired motion for given input forces. Using this design technique and wet etching, we show that we can realize high-aspect-ratio compliant micro-mechanisms. For a (110) Si wafer of 250 µm thickness, the minimum length of the etch opening to get a slot is found to be 866 µm. The minimum achievable width of the slot is limited by the resolution of the lithography process and this can be a very small value. This is studied by conducting trials with different mask layouts on a (110) Si wafer. These constraints are taken care of by using a suitable design parameterization rather than by imposing the constraints explicitly. Topology optimization, as is well known, gives designs using only the essential design specifications. In this work, we show that our technique also gives manufacturable mechanism designs along with lithography mask layouts. Some designs obtained are transferred to lithography masks and mechanisms are fabricated on (110) Si wafers.
