Dietary prebiotics: current status and new definition

In November 2008, a group of scientists met at the 6th Meeting of the International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) in London, Ontario, Canada, to discuss the functionality of prebiotics. As a result of this, it was concluded that the prebiotic field is currently dominated by gastrointestinal events. However, in the future, it may be the case that other mixed microbial ecosystems may be modulated by a prebiotic approach, such as the oral cavity, skin and the urogenital tract. Therefore, a decision was taken to build upon the current prebiotic status and define a niche for ‘dietary prebiotics’. This review is co-authored by the working group of ISAPP scientists and sets the background for defining a dietary prebiotic as ‘‘a selectively fermented ingredient that results in specific changes in the composition and/or activity of the gastrointestinal microbiota, thus conferring benefit(s) upon host health’’.

A 3 × 2 achievement goal model

In the present research, a 3 × 2 model of achievement goals is proposed and tested. The model is rooted in the definition and valence components of competence, and encompasses 6 goal constructs: task-approach, task-avoidance, self-approach, self-avoidance, other-approach, and other-avoidance. The results from 2 studies provided strong support for the proposed model, most notably the need to separate task-based and self-based goals. Studies 1 and 2 yielded data establishing the 3 × 2 structure of achievement goals, and Study 2 documented the antecedents and consequences of each of the goals in the 3 × 2 model. The impracticality of a universal drought definition

This paper demonstrates the impracticality of a comprehensive mathematical definition of the term `drought' which formalises the general qualitative definition that drought is `a deficit of water relative to normal conditions'. Starting from the local water balance, it is shown that a universal description of drought requires reference to water supply, demand and management. The influence of human intervention through water management is shown to be intrinsic to the definition of drought in the universal sense and can only be eliminated in the case of purely meteorological drought. The state of `drought' is shown to be predicated on the existence of climatological norms for a multitude of process specific terms. In general these norms are either difficult to obtain or even non-existent in the non-stationary context of climate change. Such climatological considerations, in conjunction with the difficulty of quantifying human influence, lead to the conclusion that we cannot reasonably expect the existence of any workable generalised objective definition of drought.

Friendly amendment: a commentary on Doyle and Ford's proposed re-definition of 'mental model'

Some amendments are proposed to a recent redefinition of the mental model concept in system dynamics. First, externalised, or articulated mental models should not be called cognitive maps; this term has a well established, alternative meaning. Second, there can be mental models of entities not yet existing beyond an individual's mind; the modelling of planned or desired systems is possible and recommended. Third, saying that mental models maintain social systems connects with some exciting research opportunities for system dynamics; however, it is probably an accidental distraction from the intended meaning of the redefinition. These minor criticisms apart, the new definition of mental model of a dynamic system is welcomed as a useful contribution to both research and practice.

Det största hindret för utvecklingen av elektroniska tjänster är den höga säkerhet som måste ställas på exempelvis identifiering och signering. För denna säkerhet kan med fördel PKI, Public Key Infrastructure, användas. Det är en säkerhetsmetod som innebär att man använder privata och publika nycklar. PKI-tekniken skyddar bra mot avlyssning eftersom identifieringen bygger på att ett slumptal krypteras, och att resultatet därför ser olika ut från gång till gång.Socialtjänsten på Borlänge Kommun har påbörjat utvecklingen av en elektronisk tjänst som kommer att innebära att personer som beviljats ekonomiskt bistånd, ska kunna förnya sin ansökan via Internet. Personen i fråga ska även kunna se de uppgifter som Socialtjänsten har ifrån övriga inblandade myndigheter, samt vika utbetalningar som Socialtjänsten gjort och ska göra till personen. I och med detta exjobb kan Borlänge Kommun visa upp en prototyp som fungerar i stort sett som de vill att den skarpa tjänsten ska göraSverige är en av pionjärerna i världen att öppna förvaltningen på Internet, och Borlänge kommun har som en av de första kommunerna i Sverige startat utvecklingen av en tjänst i enlighet med "24-timmars myndigheten".
