A microstructural and X-ray investigation of Ti-AI-Mo alloys Ti-31 Al-15 Mo, Ti-31 Al-13 Mo, Ti-31Al-9Mo and Ti-35Al-9Mo (containing the Ti3Al, TiAl and β phases) indicates that the existing phase diagram of the ternary system for this composition range published by Ge Dhzhi-Min and Pylaeva is in error above 1473 K. An analysis of phase relations reveals that the error has arisen from their use of the Ti-AI diagram due to Bumps, Kessler and Hansen as a basis for generating the ternary. It is shown that a phase diagram of the ternary, consistent with the experimental results, can be generated using a version of the Ti-AI system due to Margolin. Simple geometric arguments are used to build up a new semi-quantitative description of the Ti-AI-Mo system which can be used as a basis for a detailed investigation of phase equilibria in this system.

Rapid solidification of Ti-7.3wt.%Cu (near-eutectoid composition), Ti-36.2wt.%Ni and Ti-34.3wt.% Ni-5.8wt.%Si alloys has been carried out by electron beam melting and splat quenching on a water-cooled rotating copper disc. The product obtained was in the form of thin ribbons 60–100 μm thick. Transmission electron microscopy studies of Ti---Cu alloy splats showed that the microstructure consisted of a mixture of martensite and a lamellar eutectoid product. The formation of the intermetallic compound Ti2Cu involved a diffusionless ω transformation and spinodal clustering. In the case of Ti---Ni alloy the as-quenched microstructure is complex, consisting of α, transformed β and intermetallic phases. This could have arisen possibly as a result of local variation in cooling rates. Rapid solidification of Ti---Ni---Si alloy resulted in partial quenching of an amorphous phase. The amorphous phase was seen to be extremely hard (a Vickers hardness of about 800 HV).

A possible mechanism for the resistance minimum in dilute alloys in which the localized impurity states are non-magnetic is suggested. The fact is considered that what is essential to the Kondo-like behaviour is the interaction of the conduction electron spin s with the internal dynamical degrees of freedom of the impurity centre. The necessary internal dynamical degrees of freedom are provided by the dynamical Jahn-Teller effect associated with the degenerate 3d-orbitals of the transition-metal impurities interacting with the surrounding (octahedral) complex of the nearest-neighbour atoms. The fictitious spin I characterizing certain low-lying vibronic states of the system is shown to couple with the conduction electron spin s via s-d mixing and spin-orbit coupling, giving rise to a singular temperature-dependent exchange-like interaction. The resistivity so calculated is in fair agreement with the experimental results of Cape and Hake for Ti containing 0.2 at% of Fe.

Some initial results are presented on the formation of the y phase, based on the intermetallic TiA1 (LIo, c/a = 1.02) from the phase, based on the intermetallic TidAl (DOts , c/a = 0.801) in a Ti-31wt. Al-13wt Mo alloy. The study is part of a programme to evaluate microstractures and properties of alloys containing the y phase in the Ti-Mo-AI ternary system.

Titanium alloys like Ti-6A-4V are the backbone materials for aerospace, energy and chemical industries. Hypoeutectic boron addition to Ti-6Al-4V alloy produces a reduction in as-cast grain size by roughly an order of magnitude resulting in the possibility of avoiding ingot breakdown step and thereby reducing the processing cost. In the present study, ISM processed as-cast boron added Ti-6Al-4V alloy is deformed in (alpha+beta)-phase field, where alpha-lath bending seemed to be the dominating deformation mechanism.

An electron-beam melting and centrifugal splat-quenching technique for the production of microflakes of Ti-6A1-4V (wt%) alloy quenched at an average cooling rate of about 105 K sec–1 is described. The effect of substrate angle on the shape, size, microstructure and average cooling rate of the flakes of major sieve fractions is discussed. Morphologies of particles of minor sieve fractions are dealt with briefly.

Addition of boron in small quantities to various titanium alloys have shown significant improvement in mechanical behavior of materials. In the present study, electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques have been applied to investigate the deformation microstructure evolution in boron modified two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The alloy was hot compressed at 750 degrees C up to 50% height reduction at two different strain rates (10(-3) s(-1) and 1 s(-1)). The EBSD analyses indicated significant differences in deformed microstructure of the base alloy and the alloy containing boron. A strong subgrain formation tendency was observed along with inhomogeneous distribution of dislocations inside large a colonies of Ti64. In contrast, a colonies were relatively strain free for Ti64 + B, with more uniform dislocation density distribution. The observed difference is attributed to microstructural modifications viz, grain size refinement and presence of TiB particles at grain boundary produced due to boron addition. X-ray diffraction line profile analysis (XRDLPA) techniques have been applied to investigate the deformed microstructure of a recently developed boron modified two-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The alloy was hot compressed at 750 degrees C up to 50% height reduction at two different strain rates (10(-3) S-1 and 1 S-1). Microstructural parameters like average domain size, average microstrain within the domain and dislocation density of the two phases were determined using X-ray diffraction line profile analysis. The results indicate an increase in the microstrain and dislocation density for the alpha-phase and decrease for the beta-phase in the case of boron modified alloys as compared to the normal material. Microstructural modifications viz, the grain refinement and the presence of hard, brittle TiB particles in the case of boron modified alloy are held responsible for the observed difference in the dislocation density. Owing to their high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, titanium (Ti) and its alloys, especially (alpha+beta) alloys like Ti-6Al-4V is the backbone materials for aerospace, energy, and chemical industries. Trace boron addition (similar to 0.1 wt. %) to the alloy Ti-6Al-4V produces a reduction in as-cast grain size by roughly an order of magnitude resulting in enhanced ductility, higher stiffness, strength and good fracture resistance. Boron addition could also affect the evolution of texture and microstructure in the material. The solidification microstructures of Boron free as well as Boron containing Ti-6Al-4V are found to be almost homogeneous from periphery towards the center of as-cast ingot in terms of both alpha-colony size and distribution. Boron addition substantially reduces alpha-colony size (similar to 50-80 mu m). A gradual change in alpha texture from periphery towards the center has been observed with orientations close to specific texture components suggesting the formation of texture zones. The mechanism of texture evolution can be visualized as a result of variant selection during solidification through (alpha+beta) phase field.

Soft-chemical oxidation of KTiOPO4-like KM(0.5)(V)Ti(0.5)(III)OPO(4) (M = Nb, Ta) using chlorine in CHCl3 is accompanied by partial deintercalation of potassium, yielding K(0.5)MV(0.5)Ti(0.5)(IV)OPO(4) compounds which are new non-linear optical materials that exhibit efficient second-harmonic generation of 1064 nm radiation, as does KTiOPO4.

An amorphous phase has been synthesized by mechanical alloying in a planetary mill over a nickel content range of 1070 at.% in the Ti---Ni system and a copper content range of 1050 at.% in the Ti---Cu system. In the case of ternary Ti---Ni---Cu alloys the glass-forming composition range has been found to be given by x = 1020 for Ti60Ni40 ? xCux, x = 10 30 for Ti50Ni50 ? xCux and x = 10 40 for Ti40Ni60 ? xCux alloys. The difficulty in the amorphization of copper-rich compositions is explained in the light of enthalpy composition diagrams calculated for the ternary solid solution and the amorphous phase.

The formation of the metallic glass and crystalline phases and related microstructures and the decomposition behavior of rapidly solidified Ti75Ni25 alloys obtained under different processing conditions have been investigated in detail. The competition between glass transition and nucleation of beta-Ti during rapid solidification leads to the possibility of synthesizing the nanocomposites of beta-Ti and glass. Additionally, it is shown that the presence of a small amount of Si also promotes simultaneous nucleation of fine Ti2Ni intermetallic compound. Thermodynamic calculation of the metastable phase diagram indicates the presence of a metastable eutectic reaction between alpha-Ti and Ti2Ni. Evidence of this reaction at lower cooling rates has been presented. On heating, the glass decomposes through this reaction. Finally, on the basis of understanding of the microstructural evolution during decomposition, a new approach has been adopted to synthesize a nanodispersed composite of alpha-Ti in the crystalline Ti2Ni matrix with a narrow size distribution by controlling the devitrification heat treatment of the metallic glass.

We have studied the evolution of microstructure when a disordered ternary alloy is quenched into a ternary miscibility gap. We have used computer simulations based on multicomponent Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equations for c(A) and c(B), the compositions (in mole fraction) of A and B, respectively. In this work, we present our results on the effect of relative interfacial energies on the temporal evolution of morphologies during spinodal phase separation of an alloy with average composition, c(A) = 1/4, c(B) = 1/4 and c(C) = 1/2. Interfacial energies between the 'A' rich, 'B' rich and 'C' rich phases are varied by changing the gradient energy coefficients. The phases associated with a higher interfacial energy are found to be more rounded than those with lower energy. Further, the kinetic paths (i.e. the history of A-rich, B-rich and C-rich regions in the microstructure) are also affected significantly by the relative interfacial energies of the three phases.

In the present study, solidification microstructure and texture evolution in grain-refined Ti-6Al-4V and γ-TiAl alloys via trace boron addition are compared with their baseline counterparts. Boron addition resulted in dramatic grain refinement by almost an order of magnitude. The texture developed in these alloys is also markedly different from the baseline alloys.

A study is made to bring out the effect of alloying with Cr, Ti or Mn on the creep behaviour of Fe3Al. Impression creep experiments have been carried out in the DO3 phase field. In all the alloys, power law creep behaviour is observed in the stress range covered. The stress exponent for steady state creep rate and the activation energy for creep indicate that the creep rate is controlled by the dislocation climb process. Among the alloying elements studied, addition of Ti is most effective in improving the creep resistance.
