We demonstrate a novel Rayleigh interferometric noise mitigation scheme for applications in carrier-distributed dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) passive optical networks at 10 Gbit/s using carrier suppressed subcarrier-amplitude modulated phase shift keying modulation. The required optical signal to Rayleigh noise ratio is reduced by 12 dB, while achieving excellent tolerance to dispersion, subcarrier frequency and drive amplitude variations.

Low-cost, high-capacity optical transmission systems are required for metropolitan area networks. Direct-detected multi-carrier systems are attractive candidates, but polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the major impairments that limits their performance. In this paper, we report the first experimental analysis of the PMD tolerance of a 288Gbit/s NRZ-OOK Coherent Wavelength Division Multiplexing system. The results show that this impairment is determined primarily by the subcarrier baud rate. We confirm the robustness of the system to PMD by demonstrating error-free performance over an unrepeatered 124km field-installed single-mode fiber with a negligible penalty of 0.3dB compared to the back-to-back measurements. Future optical networks will require the implementation of very high capacity (and therefore spectral efficient) technologies. Multi-carrier systems, such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Coherent WDM (CoWDM), are promising candidates. In this paper, we present analytical, numerical, and experimental investigations of the impact of the relative phases between optical subcarriers of CoWDM systems, as well as the effect that the number of independently modulated subcarriers can have on the performance. We numerically demonstrate a five-subcarrier and three-subcarrier 10-GBd CoWDM system with direct detected amplitude shift keying (ASK) and differentially/coherently detected (D) phase shift keying (PSK). The simulation results are compared with experimental measurements of a 32-Gbit/s DPSK CoWDM system in two configurations. The first configuration was a practical 3-modulator array where all three subcarriers were independently modulated, the second configuration being a traditional 2-modulator odd/even configuration, where only odd and even subcarriers were independently modulated. Simulation and experimental results both indicate that the independent modulation implementation has a greater dependency on the relative phases between subcarriers, with a stronger penalty for the center subcarrier than the odd/even modulation scheme.

We demonstrate the first experimental implementation of a 3.9-Gb/s differential binary phase-shift keying (DBPSK)-based double sideband (DSB) optical fast orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (FOFDM) system with a reduced subcarrier spacing equal to half the symbol rate over 300m of multimode fiber (MMF) using intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD). The required received optical power at a bit-error rate (BER) of 10(-3) was measured to be similar to -14.2 dBm with a receiver sensitivity penalty of only similar to 0.2 dB when compared to the back-to-back case. Experimental results agree very well with the theoretical predictions.

A practical implementation of coherent wavelength division multiplexing (CoWDM) is demonstrated for the first time using injection-locked lasers and a DPSK modulator array. For a 31.99 Gbit/s system (three subcarriers at 10.664 Gbit/s) the null-to-null spectral bandwidth was only 42.656 GHz and the average receiver sensitivity measured was -33.5 dBm when all subcarrier phases were optimised.

Some critical aspects of a new kind of on-line measurement technique for micro and nanoscale surface measurements are described. This attempts to use spatial light-wave scanning to replace mechanical stylus scanning, and an optical fibre interferometer to replace optically bulky interferometers for measuring the surfaces. The basic principle is based on measuring the phase shift of a reflected optical signal. Wavelength-division-multiplexing and fibre Bragg grating techniques are used to carry out wavelength-to-field transformation and phase-to-depth detection, allowing a large dynamic measurement ratio (range/resolution) and high signal-to-noise ratio with remote access. In effect the paper consists of two parts: multiplexed fibre interferometry and remote on-machine surface detection sensor (an optical dispersive probe). This paper aims to investigate the metrology properties of a multiplexed fibre interferometer and to verify its feasibility by both theoretical and experimental studies. Two types of optical probes, using a dispersive prism and a blazed grating, respectively, are introduced to realize wavelength-to-spatial scanning.

The application of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in an optical burst-switched system employing a single fast switching sample grating-distributed Bragg reflector (SG-DBR) laser is demonstrated experimentally. The effect of filter profiles compatible with 50, 25, and 12.5 GHz wavelength-division multiplexing grids on the system is investigated with system performance examined in terms of error vector magnitude per subcarrier for OFDM burst data beginning at various times after a switching event. Additionally the placement of the OFDM training sequence within the data burst and its effect on the system is investigated.

Refractive index and structural characteristics of optical polymers are strongly influenced by the thermal history of the material. Polymer optical fibres (POF) are drawn under tension, resulting in axial orientation of the polymer molecular chains due to their susceptibility to align in the fibre direction. This change in orientation from the drawing process results in residual strain in the fibre and also affects the transparency and birefringence of the material (1-3). PMMA POF has failure strain as high as over 100%. POF has to be drawn under low tension to achieve this value. The drawing tension affects the magnitude of molecular alignment along the fibre axis, thus affecting the failure strain. The higher the tension the lower the failure stain will be. However, the properties of fibre drawn under high tension can approach that of fibre drawn under low tension by means of an annealing process. Annealing the fibre can generally optimise the performance of POF while keeping most advantages intact. Annealing procedures can reduce index difference throughout the bulk and also reduce residual stress that may cause fracture or distortion. POF can be annealed at temperatures approaching the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer to produce FBG with a permanent blue Bragg wave-length shift at room temperature. At this elevated temperature segmental motion in the structure results in a lower viscosity. The material softens and the molecular chains relax from the axial orientation causing shrinking of the fibre. The large attenuation of typically 1dB/cm in the 1550nm spectral region of PMMA POF has limited FBG lengths to less than 10cm. The more expensive fluorinated polymers with lower absorption have had no success as FBG waveguides. Bragg grating have been inscribed onto various POF in the 800nm spectral region using a 30mW continuous wave 325nm helium cadmium laser, with a much reduced attenuation coefficient of 10dB/m (5). Fabricating multiplexed FBGs in the 800nm spectral region in TOPAS and PMMA POF consistently has lead to fabrication of multiplexed FBG in the 700nm spectral region by a method of prolonged annealing. The Bragg wavelength shift of gratings fabricated in PMMA fibre at 833nm and 867nm was monitored whilst the POF was thermally annealed at 80°C. Permanent shifts exceeding 80nm into the 700nm spectral region was attained by both gratings on the fibre. The large permanent shift creates the possibility of multiplexed Bragg sensors operating over a broad range. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. A three-node optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) network is demonstrated that utilizes electroabsorption (EA) modulators as the core elements. Each node is self contained and performs its own clock recovery and synchronization. "Drop and insert" functionality is demonstrated for the first time with an EA modulator by completely removing a 10-Gb/s channel from a 40-Gb/s OTDM data stream. A different 10-Gb/s channel was subsequently inserted into the vacant time slot. Clock recovery is achieved by using an EA modulator in a novel bidirectional configuration. Bit-error-rate (BER) measurements are presented for each of the 10-Gb/s OTDM channels.

A Bragg grating fast tunable filter prototype working over a linear tuning range of 45 nm with a maximum tuning speed of 21 nm/ms has been realized. The tunable filter system is based on two piezoelectric stack actuators moving a mechanical device thus compressing an apodized fiber Bragg grating. The filter allows both traction and compression and can work in transmission and in reflection. It is designed to work with a channel spacing of 100 GHz according to the ITU specifications for wavelength division multiplexing systems.

A long period grating is interrogated with a fibre Bragg grating using a derivative spectroscopy technique. A quasi-linear relationship between the output of the sensing scheme and the curvature experienced by the long period grating is demonstrated, with a sensitivity of 5.05 m and with an average curvature resolution of 2.9 × 10-2 m-1. In addition, the feasibility of multiplexing an in-line series of long period gratings with this interrogation scheme is demonstrated with two pairs of fibre Bragg gratings and long period gratings. With this arrangement the cross-talk error between channels was less than ± 2.4 × 10-3 m-1.

We show that inserting pilot tones with frequency intervals inversely proportional to the subcarrier index exhibits greatly improved dispersion estimation performance when compared to the equal spacing design in optical fast orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (F-OFDM). With the proposed design, a 20-Gbit/s four amplitude shift keying optical F-OFDM system with 840-km transmission without optical dispersion compensation is experimentally demonstrated. It is shown that a single F-OFDM symbol with six pilot tones can achieve near-optimal estimation performance for the 840-km dispersion. This is in contrast to the minimum of ten pilot tones using an equal spacing design with either cubic or Fourier-transform-based interpolation. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We propose a novel approach to ultra-narrow optical filtering based on a specially designed slightly asymmetric filter, which can be fabricated using fibre Bragg gratings. A feasibility of 8×40 Gbit/s DWDM RZ transmission with 0.8 bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency (without polarisation multiplexing) over 1280 km of SMF/DCF link without FEC has been confirmed by numerical modelling. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. We scrutinize the concept of integrable nonlinear communication channels, resurrecting and extending the idea of eigenvalue communications in a novel context of nonsoliton coherent optical communications. Using the integrable nonlinear Schrödinger equation as a channel model, we introduce a new approach - the nonlinear inverse synthesis method - for digital signal processing based on encoding the information directly onto the nonlinear signal spectrum. The latter evolves trivially and linearly along the transmission line, thus, providing an effective eigenvalue division multiplexing with no nonlinear channel cross talk. The general approach is illustrated with a coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing transmission format. We show how the strategy based upon the inverse scattering transform method can be geared for the creation of new efficient coding and modulation standards for the nonlinear channel. © Published by the American Physical Society.

We present a newly designed polymer light-emitting diode with a bandwidth of ∼350 kHz for high-speed visible light communications. Using this new polymer light-emitting diode as a transmitter, we have achieved a record transmission speed of 10 Mb/s for a polymer light-emitting diode-based optical communication system with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique, matching the performance of single carrier formats using multitap equalization. For achieving such a high data-rate, a power pre-emphasis technique was adopted. © 2014 Optical Society of America.
