The structural and magnetic study of the pseudo-binary multiferroic (1 x)BiFeO3 (x)SrTiO3 has been investigated as a function of composition and temperature. In contrary to the previous studies, detailed examination revealed that the reported anomaly in the magnetization at x-0.30 does not occur at the composition induced rhombohedral-cubic phase boundary, but within the rhombohedral phase itself. The rhombohedral to cubic transition occurs at x > 0.4. Evidence of magneto-elastic coupling near the Neel temperature and nucleation-growth mode of the rhombohedral-cubic transformation, with both the phases coexisting over a range of temperature was found. The authors prepared (1 - x) BiFeO3 - (x)Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O-3 for x <= 0.30 by sol-gel method and investigated the material's structures, magnetic and electrical properties. Detailed Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data revealed that the system retains distorted rhombohedral R3c structure for x <= 0.10 but transforms to monoclinic (Cc) structure for x > 0.10. Disappearance of some Raman modes corresponding to A1 modes and the decrease in the intensities of the remaining A1 modes with increasing x in the Raman spectra, which is a clear indication of structural modification and symmetry changes brought about by PZT doping. Enhanced magnetization with PZT doping content may be attributed to the gradual change and destruction in the spin cycloid structure of BiFeO3. The leakage current density at 3.5 kV/cm was reduced by approximately three orders of magnitude by doping PZT (x = 0.30), compared with BFO ceramics. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

We report the preparation, analysis, and phase transformation behavior of polymorphs and the hydrate of 4-amino-3,5-dinitrobenzamide. The compound crystallizes in four different polymorphic forms, Form I (monoclinic, P2(1)/n), Form II (orthorhombic, Pbca), Form III (monoclinic, P2(1)/c), and Form IV (monoclinic, P2(1)/c). Interestingly, a hydrate (triclinic, P (1) over bar) of the compound is also discovered during the systematic identification of the polymorphs. Analysis of the polymorphs has been investigated using hot stage microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, in situ variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. On heating, all of the solid forms convert into Form I irreversibly, and on further heating, melting is observed. In situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that Form II transforms to Form I above 175 degrees C via single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. The hydrate, on heating, undergoes a double phase transition, first to Form III upon losing water in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashion and then to a more stable polymorph Form I on further heating. Thermal analysis leads to the conclusion that Form II appears to be the most stable phase at ambient conditions, whereas Form I is more stable at higher temperature.

The current study involves synthesis of a series of Tb3+ doped ZrO2 nanophosphors by solution combustion method using oxalyl dihydrazide as fuel. The as-formed ZrO2:Tb3+ nanophosphors having different concentrations of Tb3+ (1-11 mol%) were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-Visible spectroscopic techniques and the materials were subjected to photoluminescence and photocatalytic dye decolorization studies. The PXRD analysis indicates the formation of tetragonal symmetry up to 5 mol% concentration of Tb3+. Further increase in Tb3+ concentration has lead to cubic phase formation and the same was confirmed by Rietveld refinement analysis. SEM images revealed that material was highly porous in nature comprising of large voids and cracks with irregular morphology. TEM and SAED images clearly confirm the formation of high quality tetragonal nanocrystals. The emissive properties of nanophosphors were found to be dependent on Tb3+ dopant concentration. The green emission of the material was turned to white emission with the increase of Tb3+ ion concentration. The photocatalytic activities of these nanophosphors were probed for the decolorization of Congo red under UV and Sunlight irradiation. All the photocatalysts showed enhanced activity under UV light compared to Sunlight. The photocatalyst with 7 mol% Tb3+ showed enhanced activity attributed to effective separation of charge carriers due to phase transformation from tetragonal to cubic. The influence of crystallite size and PL on charge carrier trapping-recombination dynamics was investigated. The study successfully demonstrates synthesis of tetragonal and cubic ZrO2:Tb3+ green nanophosphors with superior photoluminescence and photocatalytic activities. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. For decades it has been a well-known fact that among the few ferroelectric compounds in the perovskite family, namely, BaTiO3, KNbO3, PbTiO3, and Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3, the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of BaTiO3 are considerably higher than the others in polycrystalline form at room temperature. Further, similar to ferroelectric alloys exhibiting morphotropic phase boundary, single crystals of BaTiO3 exhibit anomalously large piezoelectric response when poled away from the direction of spontaneous polarization at room temperature. These anomalous features in BaTiO3 remained unexplained so far from the structural standpoint. In this work, we have used high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, atomic resolution aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, in conjunction with a powder poling technique, to reveal that at 300 K (i) the equilibrium state of BaTiO3 is characterized by coexistence of metastable monoclinic Pm and orthorhombic (Amm2) phases along with the tetragonal phase, and (ii) strong electric field switches the polarization direction from the 001] direction towards the 101] direction. These results suggest that BaTiO3 at room temperature is within an instability regime, and that this instability is the fundamental factor responsible for the anomalous dielectric and piezoelectric properties of BaTiO3 as compared to the other homologous ferroelectric perovskite compounds at room temperature. Pure BaTiO3 at room temperature is therefore more akin to lead-based ferroelectric alloys close to the morphotropic phase boundary where polarization rotation and field induced ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transformations play a fundamental role in influencing the dielectric and piezoelectric behavior.

The problem of estimation of the time-variant reliability of actively controlled structural dynamical systems under stochastic excitations is considered. Monte Carlo simulations, reinforced with Girsanov transformation-based sampling variance reduction, are used to tackle the problem. In this approach, the external excitations are biased by an additional artificial control force. The conflicting objectives of the two control forces-one designed to reduce structural responses and the other to promote limit-state violations (but to reduce sampling variance)-are noted. The control for variance reduction is fashioned after design-point oscillations based on a first-order reliability method. It is shown that for structures that are amenable to laboratory testing, the reliability can be estimated experimentally with reduced testing times by devising a procedure based on the ideas of the Girsanov transformation. Illustrative examples include studies on a building frame with a magnetorheologic damper-based isolation system subject to nonstationary random earthquake excitations. A hitherto unseen rotation of the isopropyl group in the solid state, predicted to be forbidden based on theoretical investigations, is reported. This C-C rotation observed during the temperature dependent single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation is attributed to the concomitant changes in molecular structure and intermolecular packing.

Bi1-xCaxFe1-xCoxO3 nanoparticles with x=0.0, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 were successfully synthesized by cost effective tartaric acid based sol gel route. The alkali earth metal Ca2+ ions and transition metal Co3+ ions codoping at A and B-sites of BiFeO3 results in structural distortion and phase transformation. Rietveld refinement of XRD patterns suggested the coexistence of rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases in codoped BiFeO3 samples. Both XRD and Raman scattering studies showed the compressive lattice distortion in the samples induced by codoping of Ca2+ and Co3+ ions. Two-phonon Raman spectra exhibited the improvement of magnetization in these samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed the dominancy of Fe3+ and Co3+ oxidation states along with the shifting of the binding energy of Bi 4f orbital which confirms the substitution Ca2+ at Bi-site. The magnetic study showed the enhancement in room temperature ferromagnetic behavior with co-substitution consistent with Rama analysis. The gradual change in line shape of electron spin resonance spectra indicated the local distortion induced by codoping. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Melt spun ribbons of Fe95-x Zr (x) B4Cu1 with x = 7 (Z7B4) and 9 (Z9B4) alloys have been prepared, and their structure and magnetic properties have been evaluated using XRD, DSC, TEM, VSM, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The glass forming ability (GFA) of both alloys has been calculated theoretically using thermodynamical parameters, and Z9B4 alloy is found to possess higher GFA than that of Z7B4 alloy which is validated by XRD results. On annealing, the amorphous Z7B4 ribbon crystallizes into nanocrystalline alpha-Fe, whereas amorphous Z9B4 ribbon shows two-stage crystallization process, first partially to bcc solid solution which is then transformed to nanocrystalline alpha-Fe and Fe2Zr phases exhibiting bimodal distribution. A detailed phase analysis using Mossbauer spectroscopy through hyperfine field distribution of phases has been carried out to understand the crystallization behavior of Z7B4 and Z9B4 alloy ribbons. In order to understand the phase transformation behavior of Z7B4 and Z9B4 ribbons, molar Gibbs free energies of amorphous, alpha-Fe, and Fe2Zr phases have been evaluated. It is found that in case of Z7B4, alpha-Fe is always a stable phase, whereas Fe2Zr is stable at higher temperature for Z9B4. (C) The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2015

Nano-crystals of LiNbxTa1 (-) O-x(3) were evolved by subjecting melt-quenched 1.5Li(2)O-2B(2)O(3)-xNb(2)O(5)-(1 - x)Ta2O5 glasses (where x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.00) to a controlled 3-h isothermal heat treatment between 530 and 560 degrees C. Detailed X-ray diffraction and Raman spectral studies confirmed the formation of nano-crystalline LiNbxTa1 (-) O-x(3) along with a minor phase of ferroelectric and non-linear optic Li2B4O7. The sizes of the nanocrystals evolved in the glass were in the range of 19-37 nm for x = 0-0.75 and 23-45 nm for x = 1.00. Electron microscopic studies confirmed a transformation of the morphology of the nano-crystallites from dendritic star-shaped spherulites for x = 0 to rod-shaped structures for x = 1.00 brought about by a coalescence of crystallites. Broad Maker-fringe patterns (recorded at 532 nm) were obtained by subjecting the heat-treated glass plates to 1064 nm fundamental radiation. However, an effective second order non-linear optic coefficient, d(eff), of 0.45 pm/V, which is nearly 1.2 times the d(36) of KDP single crystal, was obtained for a 560 degrees C/3 h heat-treated glass of the representative composition x = 0.50 comprising 37 nm sized crystallites. Methodology for the preparation of allenes from propargylic hydrazine precursors under mild conditions is described. Oxidation of the propargylic hydrazines, which can be readily prepared from propargylic alcohols, with either of two azo oxidants, diethyl azodicarboxylate (DEAD) or 4-methyl 1,2-triazoline-3,5-dione (MTAD), effects conversion to the allenes, presumably via sigmatropic rearrangement of a monoalkyl diazene intermediate. This rearrangement is demonstrated to proceed with essentially complete stereospecificity. The application of this methodology to the preparation of other allenes, including two that are notable for their reactivity and thermal instability, is also described.
The structural and mechanistic study of a monoalkyl diazene intermediate in the oxidative transformation of propargylic hydrazines to allenes is described. The use of long-range heteronuclear NMR coupling constants for assigning monoalkyl diazene stereochemistry (E vs Z) is also discussed. Evidence is presented that all known monoalkyl diazenes are the E isomers, and the erroneous assignment of stereochemistry in the previous report of the preparation of (Z)-phenyldiazene is discussed.
The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of 1,6-didehydro[10]annulene are described. This molecule has been recognized as an interesting synthetic target for over 40 years and represents the intersection of two sets of extensively studied molecules: nonbenzenoid aromatic compounds and molecules containing sterically compressed π-systems.The formation of 1,5-dehydronaphthalene from 1 ,6-didehydro[10]annulene is believed to be the prototype for cycloaromatizations that produce 1,4-dehydroaromatic species with the radical centers disposed anti about the newly formed single bond. The aromaticity of this annulene and the facility of its cycloaromatization are also analyzed.

Glass systems of composition xBiCl(3)-(1-x)TeO2 (x=0.2, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6, respectively) have been investigated by means of DSC, infrared absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy in order to obtain information about the transformation of structure, thermal and optical properties in the formation of the glass network. The results confirm that the addition of BiCl3 network former increases the glass forming ability and the optical transmission range. And also from Raman results a structural evolution was observed where the number of structural units described as [TeO3] trigonal pyramids, [TeO3+1] polyhedra and ionic behavior bonds (NBO) increases at the expense of the [TeO4] trigonal bipyramids. Bi3+ ions exist in network structure as [BiO6] or [BiCl6] octahedral coordination. As upconversion luminescence glass host, this glassy system is desired for optical properties but the thermal stability will still be improved. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Hydrogen-induced morphotropic phase transformation of single-crystalline vanadium dioxide nanobeams.
Resumo:
We report a morphotropic phase transformation in vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanobeams annealed in a high-pressure hydrogen gas, which leads to the stabilization of metallic phases. Structural analyses show that the annealed VO2 nanobeams are hexagonal-close-packed structures with roughened surfaces at room temperature, unlike as-grown VO2 nanobeams with the monoclinic structure and with clean surfaces. Quantitative chemical examination reveals that the hydrogen significantly reduces oxygen in the nanobeams with characteristic nonlinear reduction kinetics which depend on the annealing time. Surprisingly, the work function and the electrical resistance of the reduced nanobeams follow a similar trend to the compositional variation due mainly to the oxygen-deficiency-related defects formed at the roughened surfaces. The electronic transport characteristics indicate that the reduced nanobeams are metallic over a large range of temperatures (room temperature to 383 K). Our results demonstrate the interplay between oxygen deficiency and structural/electronic phase transitions, with implications for engineering electronic properties in vanadium oxide systems.
