In this report, vertical distributions of the temperature and horizontal velocity components of the currents, got from the two sections BELIER (305 1'W) and VRIDI (4°O 5'W), carried out once a week during the 1983 year, on the Continental shelf of Ivory Coast, are shown.

The sardinella fleet landed the same quantity of sardines in 1983 (11200 tons) as in 1982. Sardinella aurita catches would be more important if the "Syndicat des Armateurs" did not impose quotas - in July 300 boxes and in August 100 boxes by fleet by trip. The extension of the effort to herring stock increased the catches of this species and an over estimation of 44% of the effort have been observed in 1983.

Sternes réprises en Côte d'Ivoire au cours des hivernages 1973-1974 et 1974-1975

Data are reported on: (1) date and place of ringing the juveniles and adults of the sea bird of the genus Sterna in Côte d'Ivoire, and (2) date and place of recapture during the winter periods of 1973-74 and 1974-75.

Croissance et détermination de l'âge par lecture d'écailles d'un poisson plat de Côte d'Ivoire, Cynoglossus canariensis (Steind. 1882)

Cynoglossus canariensis has a very rapid growth. The rate of the males is 0,36 and the female one is 0,32. The asymptotic size is 55,0cm for the females and 50,5cm for the males. Females and males younger than three years (40cm), which represent 90 per cent of the Côte d'Ivoire stock have a similar growth, so the average equation: Lt=53,5 (1-e -0,34(t+1)) will be used.

Em busca de uma poesia universal: Murilo Mendes na Itália (1957-1975)

Este trabalho é o resultado da análise de cinco livros da fase italiana (1957-1975) do poeta Murilo Mendes (1901-1975), com a intenção principal de se extrair deles a presença e a influência da Literatura e da História da arte italianas na produção do poeta mineiro. Murilo Mendes, que na Itália se tornou professor universitário e praticou a crítica de arte com intensidade, chegou a escrever dois livros em italiano. As duas primeiras obras aqui analisadas, Retratos-relâmpago e Locchio del poeta, recolhem textos em prosa sobre artistas de contextos, épocas e países diferentes: da música à literatura às artes plásticas. Esses textos escritos entre prosa e poesia são o resultado de uma maior aproximação à reflexão crítico-teórica por parte de Murilo, que, ao analisar um artista, recorre aos mesmos recursos, motivos e técnicas que irá colocar em prática na própria obra poética. Nos últimos livros de poesia do poeta mineiro (Siciliana, Convergência e Ipotesi), encontram-se de fato alguns desses elementos, como, sobretudo, o lírico-autobiográfico e o crítico-social. Na Itália, a poesia de Murilo se universaliza ao superar, segundo o impulso do Essencialismo, as fronteiras de espaço e tempo. A Century of Copepods: The U.S. Fisheries Steamer Albatross

The marine invertebrates of North America received little attention before the arrival of Louis Agassiz in 1846. Agassiz and his students, particularly Addison E. Verrill and Richard Rathbun, and Agassiz's colleague Spencer F. Baird, provided the concept and stimulus for expanded investigations. Baird's U.S. Commission of Fish and Fisheries (1871) provided a principal means, especially through the U.S. Fisheries Steamer Albatross (1882). Rathbun participated in the first and third Albatrossscientific cruises in 1883-84 and published the fist accounts of Albatross parasitic copepods. The first report of Albatross planktonic copepods was published in 1895 by Wilhelm Giesbrecht of the Naples Zoological Station. Other collections were sent to the Norwegian Georg Ossian Sars. The American Charles Branch Wilson eventually added planktonic copepods to his extensive published works on the parasitic copepods from the Albatross. The Albatross copepods from San Francisco Bay were reported upon by Calvin Olin Esterly in 1924. Henry Bryant Bigelow accompanied the last scientific cruise of the Albatross in 1920. Bigelow incorporated the 1920 copepods into his definitive study of the plankton of the Gulf of Maine. The late Otohiko Tanaka, in 1969, published two reviews of Albatross copepods. Albatross copepods will long be worked and reworked. This great ship and her shipmates were mutually inspiring, and they inspire us still.

Biographical Sketch of Spencer Fullerton Baird

Spencer Fullerton Baird was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, February 3, 1823. In 1834 he was sent to a Quaker boarding-school kept by Dr. McGraw, at Port Deposit, Maryland, and the year following to the Reading Grammar School. In 1836 he entered Dickinson College, and was graduated at the age of seventeen. After leaving college, his time for several years was devoted to studies in general natural history, to long pedestrian excursions for the purpose of observing animals and plants and collecting specimens, and to the organization of a private cabinet of natural history, which a few years later became the nucleus of the museum of the Smithsonian Institution. During this period he published a number of original papers on natural history. He also read medicine with Dr. Middleton Goldsmith, attending a winter course of lectures at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, in New York, in 1842. His medical course was never formally completed, although in 1848 he received the degree of M. D., honoris causa, from the Philadelphia Medical College. In 1845 he was chosen professor of natural history in Dickinson College, and in 1846 his duties and emoluments were increased by election to the chair of natural history and chemistry in the same institution. In 1848 he declined a call to the professorship of natural science in the University of Vermont. In 1849 he undertook his first extensive literary work, translating and editing the text for the "Iconographic Encyclopedia," an English version of Heck's Bilder Atlas, published in connection with Brockhaus's Conversations Lexikon.

Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee 21st July, 1975

This is the report from the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 21st July 1975. The report contains information on the appointment of the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee (1975-1976), the appointment of the Local Fisheries Advisory Committee (1975-1976), and the land drainage representation on Local Fisheries Committees. Also included in the report is information on fishery byelaws, fishing at Jumble Reservoir and a progress report on a proposed Coarse Fish Unit and coarse fish stock pools. Licence duties, long term angling leases on Authority Waters and radio equipment for Bailiffting Staff are also covered. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.
