Product Service Systems and supply network relationships: An exploratory case study

Purpose - In recent years there has been increasing interest in Product Service Systems (PSSs) as a business model for selling integrated product and service offerings. To date, there has been extensive research into the benefits of PSS to manufacturers and their customers, but there has been limited research into the effect of PSS on the upstream supply chain. This paper seeks to address this gap in the research. Design/methodology/approach - The research uses case-based research which is appropriate for exploratory research of this type. In-depth interviews were conducted with key personnel in a focal firm and two members of its supply chain, and the results were analysed to identify emergent themes.b Findings - The research has identified differences in supplier behaviour dependent on their role in PSS delivery and their relationship with the PSS provider. In particular, it suggests that for a successful partnership it is important to align the objectives between PSS provider and suppliers. Originality/value - This research provides a detailed investigation into a PSS supply chain and highlights the complexity of roles and relationships among the organizations within it. It will be of value to other PSS researchers and organizations transitioning to the delivery of PSS. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Toward designing with three-dimensional bumps for lift/drag improvement and buffet alleviation

The desire to design more efficient transport aircraft has led to many different attempts to minimize drag. One approach is the use of three-dimensional shock control bumps, which have gained popularity in the research community as simple, efficient and robust devices capable of reducing the wave drag of transonic wings. This paper presents a computational study of the performance of three-dimensional bumps, relating key bump design variables to the overall wing aerodynamic performance. An efficient parameterization scheme allows three-dimensional bumps to be directly compared to two-dimensional designs, indicating that two-dimensional bumps are capable of greater design point aerodynamic performance in the transonic regime. An advantage of three-dimensional bumps lies in the production of streamwise vortices, such that, while two-dimensional bumps are capable of superior performance near the design point, three-dimensional bumps are capable of breakingup regions of separated flow at high Mach numbers, suggesting improvement in terms of buffet margin. A range of bump designs are developed that exhibit a tradeoff between design point aerodynamic efficiency and improvementinbuffet margin, indicating the potential for bespoke designs to be generated for different sections of a wing based on its flow characteristics. Improvement and observation of immunoelectron microscopic method for the localization of frog Rana grylio virus (RGV) in infected fish cells

In this paper, to understand the roles of amorphous structures which were observed within the viromatrix of Rana grylio virus (RGV), an improved immunoelectron microscopy (IEM) method was developed to detect the localization of RGV in carp Epithelipma papulosum cyprinid (EPC) cells. Infected EPC cells were fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde-0.25% glutaraldehyde mixture, dehydrated completely, and embedded in LR White resin. This method allowed good ultrastructural preservation and specific labeling with anti-RGV antibodies. The results of IEM showed that colloidal gold mainly bound to the capsids of viral particles at the stage of viral assembly, while during the viral maturation colloidal gold bound to the envelop of virions. In addition, within the viromatrix, the amorphous structures, including dense floccules, membranous materials and tubules, also had strong colloidal gold signals, revealing that those amorphous structures were participated in RGV assembly. In contrast, no significant gold labeling signals were obtained in negative controls. The present study not only provided further evidence that amorphous structures within the viromatrix were involved in the process of RGV assembly, but also developed an improved IEM method for studying the interaction between iridovirus and host cells.
