A series of excellent upper Miocene through Quaternary diatomaceous sequences recovered at four sites during Leg 127 was examined for diatoms. The diagenetic transition from opal-A to opal-CT is a diachronic horizon from the uppermost part of the Denticulopsis katayamae Zone (8.5 Ma) at Hole 797B to the uppermost part of the Neodenticula kamtschatica Zone (5.73 Ma) at Hole 795A. The diatom zonation of Koizumi (1985) best divides the upper Miocene to Quaternary sequences above the opal-A/opal-CT boundary and also is useful to date carbonate concretions including diatoms below the boundary. Forty diatom datum levels were evaluated biostratigraphically based on the sediment accumulation rate curve, and several isochronous datum levels are newly proposed for the Japan Sea area. A warm-water current did not penetrated into the Japan Sea through the Tsushima strait during the late Miocene and Pliocene time, because subtropical warm-water diatoms are essentially not present in such sediment samples. The occurrences of diatom are cyclic throughout the Quaternary sediments and are affected by eustatic sea level changes.

According to the drilling probes of the Deep Waier Drilling Project, Neogene sediments in a tropical area of the Pacific Ocean are divided into 15 zones based on diatoms. The author shows that a unique zonation may be applied for the entire region. Identification of diatoms zones boundaries was conducted through their direct correlation with nannoplancton, radiolarian and foraminiferal zonal sceals. Their ultra-structure and morphological relationship are being analysed. The mode of siliceous accumulation within the equatorial belt differed through the western central and eastern region since the early Miocene and the difference become more evident from the end of Middle Miocene. The distribution of Neogene diatomaceous silt in the tropical area is controlled by the character of gyre-water circulation and agrees with the modern geographical zonation.

Cores recovered from three sites of Leg 116 were studied for radiolarians. Generally, radiolarians were absent from most samples prepared for examination. Moderate to well-preserved radiolarian assemblages are found only in the uppermost one or two cores that were the focus of this study. All of the radiolarian assemblages in the upper cores belong to the Buccinosphaera invaginata Zone of latest Quaternary age. However, there is one stratum where a few Miocene radiolarians are reworked into the modern assemblages. Local seamounts are suggested sources for the reworked radiolarians.

Deep-sea benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1143 located in the southern South China Sea (SCS) were investigated to evaluate the relationship between faunal composition patterns and paleoceanographic changes during the last 6 million years (late Miocene to Holocene). We used multivariate statistics (correspondence analysis) to analyze carbon-flux-related changes in assemblage composition of benthic foraminifers. Additional proxies for carbon flux and deep-water ventilation include delta13C records of epifaunal Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi and infaunal Uvigerina peregrina var. dirupta and Melonis pompilioides, benthic foraminiferal accumulation rates (BFARs), diversity indices, and relative abundances of indicator species. We observe three significant benthic faunal changes in the southern South China Sea during the last 6 million years. Strong fluctuations in BFAR and relative abundance of productivity indicator species between glacial and interglacial stages after the mid-Pleistocene revolution (MPR) at approximately 0.9 Ma, indicating stronger seasonal carbon flux fluctuations, are accompanied by the extinction of such species as Stilostomella spp. Increases in carbon flux indicator species are coupled with an overall decrease in benthic foraminifer diversity around 3.0 Ma in the late Pliocene. This may indicate increasing carbon flux in a period of productivity maximum caused by enhanced offshore upwelling from intensified winter monsoon wind strength.

Radiolarians were recovered from three of the five holes investigated during Leg 125. Relative abundances are estimated at Holes 782A and 784A, where preservation is poor to good. Rare, poorly preserved radiolarians are present in Hole 786A. Seven radiolarian zones are recognized in the latest early- middle Miocene to early Pleistocene of Holes 782A and 784A. These zones are approximately correlated to the zones of Sanfilippo and others published in 1985.

In the cores obtained during Leg 134 of the Ocean Drilling Program, radiolarians occur intermittently and usually in a poor state of preservation, apparently as a result of the region having been at or near the boundary between the equatorial current system and the south-central Pacific water mass during most of the Cenozoic. A few well-preserved assemblages provide a record of the Quaternary forms, and some displaced middle and lower Eocene clasts preserve a record of radiolarians near that subepochal boundary. There are less satisfactory records of middle Miocene and early Miocene to late Oligocene forms.

An apparently complete Danian section was recovered at ODP Site 738 on the southern Kerguelen Plateau. Calcareous nannofossils are abundant and moderately preserved in the section. A number of taxa common in middle or low latitudes, such as Braarudosphaera, Biscutum? romeinii, Biscutum? parvulum, Cyclagelosphaera, Octolithus multiplus, and Toweius petalosus are absent at Site 738. On the other hand, a bloom of Hornibrookina occurs at Site 738 only slightly (15 cm) above the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary as defined by the iridium peak. Species of Chiasmolithus and Prinsius are very abundant. This gives the nannofossil assemblages distinct high-latitude characteristics and suggests significant latitudinal thermal gradients in the Danian oceans. A Danian nannofossil zonation for the Antarctic region is proposed, which utilizes traditional markers and several nontraditional markers, i.e., the first occurrences of Hornibrookina, Prinsius martinii, and Chiasmolithus bidens, and the last occurrence of Hornibrookina teuriensis. Quantitative analyses of the calcareous nannofossil assemblages from Site 738 reveal four steps of rapid floral changes in the early Danian before relatively stable nannofloral conditions were reached at about 63.8 Ma.
