Thermochromic windows are able to modulate their transmittance in both the visible and the near-infrared field as a function of their temperature. As a consequence, they allow to control the solar gains in summer, thus reducing the energy needs for space cooling. However, they may also yield a reduction in the daylight availability, which results in the energy consumption for indoor artificial lighting being increased. This paper investigates, by means of dynamic simulations, the application of thermochromic windows to an existing office building in terms of energy savings on an annual basis, while also focusing on the effects in terms of daylighting and thermal comfort. In particular, due attention is paid to daylight availability, described through illuminance maps and by the calculation of the daylight factor, which in several countries is subject thresholds. The study considers both a commercially available thermochromic pane and a series of theoretical thermochromic glazing. The expected performance is compared to static clear and reflective insulating glass units. The simulations are repeated in different climatic conditions, showing that the overall energy savings compared to clear glazing can range from around 5% for cold climates to around 20% in warm climates, while not compromising daylight availability. Moreover the role played by the transition temperature of the pane is examined, pointing out an optimal transition temperatures that is irrespective of the climatic conditions.

Enterprises need continuous product development activities to remain competitive in the marketplace. Their product development process (PDP) must manage stakeholders' needs - technical, financial, legal, and environmental aspects, customer requirements, Corporate strategy, etc. -, being a multidisciplinary and strategic issue. An approach to use real option to support the decision-making process at PDP phases in taken. The real option valuation method is often presented as an alternative to the conventional net present value (NPV) approach. It is based on the same principals of financial options: the right to buy or sell financial values (mostly stocks) at a predetermined price, with no obligation to do so. In PDP, a multi-period approach that takes into account the flexibility of, for instance, being able to postpone prototyping and design decisions, waiting for more information about technologies, customer acceptance, funding, etc. In the present article, the state of the art of real options theory is prospected and a model to use the real options in PDP is proposed, so that financial aspects can be properly considered at each project phase of the product development. Conclusion is that such model can provide more robustness to the decisions processes within PDP.

The development of High-Integrity Real-Time Systems has a high footprint in terms of human, material and schedule costs. Factoring functional, reusable logic in the application favors incremental development and contains costs. Yet, achieving incrementality in the timing behavior is a much harder problem. Complex features at all levels of the execution stack, aimed to boost average-case performance, exhibit timing behavior highly dependent on execution history, which wrecks time composability and incrementaility with it. Our goal here is to restitute time composability to the execution stack, working bottom up across it. We first characterize time composability without making assumptions on the system architecture or the software deployment to it. Later, we focus on the role played by the real-time operating system in our pursuit. Initially we consider single-core processors and, becoming less permissive on the admissible hardware features, we devise solutions that restore a convincing degree of time composability. To show what can be done for real, we developed TiCOS, an ARINC-compliant kernel, and re-designed ORK+, a kernel for Ada Ravenscar runtimes. In that work, we added support for limited-preemption to ORK+, an absolute premiere in the landscape of real-word kernels. Our implementation allows resource sharing to co-exist with limited-preemptive scheduling, which extends state of the art. We then turn our attention to multicore architectures, first considering partitioned systems, for which we achieve results close to those obtained for single-core processors. Subsequently, we shy away from the over-provision of those systems and consider less restrictive uses of homogeneous multiprocessors, where the scheduling algorithm is key to high schedulable utilization. To that end we single out RUN, a promising baseline, and extend it to SPRINT, which supports sporadic task sets, hence matches real-world industrial needs better. To corroborate our results we present findings from real-world case studies from avionic industry.

Background Urinary tract infections (UTI) are frequent in outpatients. Fast pathogen identification is mandatory for shortening the time of discomfort and preventing serious complications. Urine culture needs up to 48 hours until pathogen identification. Consequently, the initial antibiotic regimen is empirical. Aim To evaluate the feasibility of qualitative urine pathogen identification by a commercially available real-time PCR blood pathogen test (SeptiFast®) and to compare the results with dipslide and microbiological culture. Design of study Pilot study with prospectively collected urine samples. Setting University hospital. Methods 82 prospectively collected urine samples from 81 patients with suspected UTI were included. Dipslide urine culture was followed by microbiological pathogen identification in dipslide positive samples. In parallel, qualitative DNA based pathogen identification (SeptiFast®) was performed in all samples. Results 61 samples were SeptiFast® positive, whereas 67 samples were dipslide culture positive. The inter-methodological concordance of positive and negative findings in the gram+, gram- and fungi sector was 371/410 (90%), 477/492 (97%) and 238/246 (97%), respectively. Sensitivity and specificity of the SeptiFast® test for the detection of an infection was 0.82 and 0.60, respectively. SeptiFast® pathogen identifications were available at least 43 hours prior to culture results. Conclusion The SeptiFast® platform identified bacterial DNA in urine specimens considerably faster compared to conventional culture. For UTI diagnosis sensitivity and specificity is limited by its present qualitative setup which does not allow pathogen quantification. Future quantitative assays may hold promise for PCR based UTI pathogen identification as a supplementation of conventional culture methods.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a pilot study, results of real-time broad-range (16S rRNA) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) performed on 45 blood samples of pediatric cancer patients with fever and neutropenia were compared with blood culture results. RESULTS: The PCR assay used, having proven a high sensitivity in artificially spiked blood samples, was positive in only three of ten blood culture-positive samples, and it was positive in 10 of 35 (29%) culture-negative samples. CONCLUSION: This broad-range PCR assay, which may identify not-grown bacteria potentially contributing to fever, needs improvement in sensitivity, and different reasons for positive PCR in negative blood culture samples need to be assessed before clinical application.

Abstract This doctoral thesis is in the field of emissions and fuel consumption measurement of reciprocating internal combustion engines when are used as power-trains for light-duty road vehicles, and especially in the real-time dynamic measurements procedures when the vehicle is being driven in real traffic. In this context, the main objective of this thesis is to study the problems associated with on-board real-time measuring systems of environmental, energy and activity variables of light vehicles powered by internal combustion engines in real traffic, and as a result, to develop an instrument and an appropriate methodology for this purpose, and consequently to make a study of the different factors which influence the emissions and the fuel consumption of passenger cars in real traffic. The thesis begins developing a prospective study on other authors’ works about development of Portable Emission Measurement Systems (PEMS), problems associated with dynamic emission measurements and application studies on actual traffic using PEMS. As a result of this study, it was shown that a measuring system specifically designed for being on-board on a vehicle, which can measure in real time emission concentrations and exhaust flow, and at the same time to record motor vehicle and environment variables as the slope and atmospheric data, is needed; and the specifications and design parameters of the equipment are proposed. Although at the beginning of this research work there were already on the market some PEMS, in this Thesis a new system is researched, designed and built, called MIVECO – PEMS, in order to meet such measurements needs. Following that, there are presented, discussed and justify all technical solutions incorporated in the system, including the gas analysis subsystem, sampling and exhaust gas flowmeter subsystem, the subsystem for measurement of environment variables and of the vehicle activity and the set of auxiliary subsystems. The final design meets the needs and hypotheses proposed, and is validated in real-life use and chassis dynamometer testing and is also compared with other stationary and on-board systems. This thesis also presents all the research that has led to the methodology of processing the set of signals recorded in real time including signal timing, calculations and error propagation. The methodology to select and characterize of the routes and circuits, the driving patterns, and the vehicle preparation and calibration of the instruments and sensors are part of the legacy of this thesis. To demonstrate the measurement capabilities of the system and the type of results that can be obtained and that are useful for the scientific community and the environmental authorities, at the end of this Thesis is presented the results of several studies of endogenous and exogenous variables that affect the instantaneous and averaged emissions and consumption factors (g/km), as: driving style, road infrastructure, the level of traffic congestion, urban and extra-urban traffic, biofuels content, type of engine (diesel or spark ignition) etc. The main conclusions of this thesis are that it is possible to measure mass emissions and consumption of vehicle engines in actual use and that the results allow us to establish policies to reduce environmental impact and improve energy efficiency, but, to establish precise methodologies and to be very careful in the entire process of calibration, measurement and data post-treatment is necessary.

One of the key scrutiny issues of new coming energy era would be the environmental impact of fusion facilities managing one kg of tritium. The potential change of committed dose regulatory limits together with the implementation of nuclear design principles (As Low as Reasonably achievable - ALARA -, Defense in Depth -D-i-D-) for fusion facilities could strongly impact on the cost of deployment of coming fusion technology. Accurate modeling of environmental tritium transport forms (HT, HTO) for the assessment of fusion facility dosimetric impact in Accidental case appears as of major interest. This paper considers different short-term releases of tritium forms (HT and HTO) to the atmosphere from a potential fusion reactor located in the Mediterranean Basin. This work models in detail the dispersion of tritium forms and dosimetric impact of selected environmental patterns both inland and in-sea using real topography and forecast meteorological data-fields (ECMWF/FLEXPART). We explore specific values of this ratio in different levels and we examine the influence of meteorological conditions in the HTO behavior for 24 hours. For this purpose we have used a tool which consists on a coupled Lagrangian ECMWF/FLEXPART model useful to follow real time releases of tritium at 10, 30 and 60 meters together with hourly observations of wind (and in some cases precipitations) to provide a short-range approximation of tritium cloud behavior. We have assessed inhalation doses. And also HTO/HT ratios in a representative set of cases during winter 2010 and spring 2011 for the 3 air levels.

ABSTRACT The objective of this Dissertation has been the achievement of real time simulations of industrial vehicles modeled as complex multibody systems made up by rigid bodies. For the development of a simulation program, four main aspects must be considered: the modeling of the multibody system (types of coordinates, ideal joints or imposed by means of forces), the formulation to be used to set the differential equations of motion (dependent or independent coordinates, global or topological methods, ways to impose constraints equations), the method of numerical integration to solve these equations in time (explicit or implicit integrators) and the details of the implementation carried out (programming language, mathematical libraries, parallelization techniques). These four stages are interrelated and all of them are part of this work. They involve the generation of models for a van and a semitrailer truck, the use of three different dynamic formulations, the integration of differential equations of motion through explicit and implicit methods, the use of BLAS functions and sparse matrix techniques, and the introduction of parallelization to use the different processor cores. The work presented in this Dissertation has been structured in eight chapters, the first of them being the Introduction. In Chapter 2, two different semi-recursive formulations are shown, of which the first one is based on a double velocity transformation, thus getting the differential equations of motion as a function of the independent relative accelerations. The numerical integration of these equations has been made with the Runge-Kutta explicit method of fourth order. The second formulation is based on dependent relative coordinates, imposing the constraints by means of position penalty coefficients and correcting the velocities and accelerations by projection methods. In this second case, the integration of the motion equations has been carried out by means of the HHT implicit integrator (Hilber, Hughes and Taylor), which belongs to the Newmark structural integrators family. In Chapter 3, the third formulation used in this Dissertation is presented. In this case, the joints between the bodies of the system have been considered as flexible joints, with forces used to impose the joint conditions. This kind of union hinders to work with relative coordinates, so the position of the system bodies and the setting of the equations of motion have been carried out using Cartesian coordinates and Euler parameters. In this global formulation, constraints are introduced through forces (with a similar approach to the penalty coefficients) are presented. The stabilization of the numerical integration is carried out also by velocity and accelerations projections. In Chapter 4, a revision of the main computer tools and strategies used to increase the efficiency of the implementations of the algorithms is presented. First of all, some basic considerations to increase the numerical efficiency of the implementations are included. Then the main characteristics of the code’ analyzers used and also the mathematical libraries used to solve linear algebra problems (both with dense and sparse matrices) are mentioned. Finally, the topic of parallelization in current multicore processors is developed thoroughly. For that, the pattern used and the most important characteristics of the tools proposed, OpenMP and Intel TBB, are described. It needs to be highlighted that the characteristics of multibody systems small size problems, frequent recursion use and intensive repetition along the time of the calculation with high dependencies of the previous results complicate extraordinarily the use of parallelization techniques against other computational mechanics areas, as the finite elements computation. Based on the concepts mentioned in Chapter 4, Chapter 5 is divided into three sections, one for each formulation proposed in this Dissertation. In each one of these sections, the details of how these different proposed implementations have been made for each algorithm and which tools have been used are described. In the first section, it is shown the use of numerical libraries for dense and sparse matrices in the semirecursive topological formulation based in the double velocity transformation. In the second one, the use of parallelization by means OpenMP and TBB is depicted in the semi-recursive formulation with penalization and projections. Lastly, the use of sparse matrices and parallelization techniques is described in the global formulation with flexible joints and Euler parameters. Chapter 6 depicts the achieved results through the formulations and implementations previously described. This chapter starts with a description of the modeling and topology of the two vehicles studied. The first model is a two-axle chassis-cabin or van like vehicle, which belongs to the range of medium charge vehicles. The second one is a five-axle vehicle belonging to the truck or cabin semi-trailer model, belonging to the heavy industrial vehicles category. In this chapter, a comparative study is done between the simulations of these vehicles with each one of the formulations used and the improvements achieved are presented in a quantitative way with the different strategies proposed in this Dissertation. With the aim of deducing the conclusions more easily and to evaluate in a more objective way the improvements introduced in the Dissertation, all the results of this chapter have been obtained with the same computer, which was the top one among the Intel Xeon range in 2007, but which is rather obsolete today. Finally, Chapters 7 and 8 are dedicated to the final conclusions and the future research projects that can be derived from the work presented in this Dissertation. The objectives of doing real time simulations in high complex industrial vehicles have been achieved with the formulations and implementations developed.

Electrical Protection systems and Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR) are essential components of actual power plants. Its installation and setting is performed during the commissioning, and it needs extensive experience since any failure in this process or in the setting, may entails some risk not only for the generator of the power plant, but also for the reliability of the power grid. In this paper, a real time power plant simulation platform is presented as a tool for improving the training and learning process on electrical protections and automatic voltage regulators. The activities of the commissioning procedure which can be practiced are described, and the applicability of this tool for improving the comprehension of this important part of the power plants is discussed. A commercial AVR and a multifunction protective relay have been tested with satisfactory results.

The increasing use of video editing software requires faster and more efficient editing tools. As a first step, these tools perform a temporal segmentation in shots that allows a later building of indexes describing the video content. Here, we propose a novel real-time high-quality shot detection strategy, suitable for the last generation of video editing software requiring both low computational cost and high quality results. While abrupt transitions are detected through a very fast pixel-based analysis, gradual transitions are obtained from an efficient edge-based analysis. Both analyses are reinforced with a motion analysis that helps to detect and discard false detections. This motion analysis is carried out exclusively over a reduced set of candidate transitions, thus maintaining the computational requirements demanded by new applications to fulfill user needs.

Abstract The development of cognitive robots needs a strong “sensorial” support which should allow it to perceive the real world for interacting with it properly. Therefore the development of efficient visual-processing software to be equipped in effective artificial agents is a must. In this project we study and develop a visual-processing software that will work as the “eyes” of a cognitive robot. This software performs a three-dimensional mapping of the robot’s environment, providing it with the essential information required to make proper decisions during its navigation. Due to the complexity of this objective we have adopted the Scrum methodology in order to achieve an agile development process, which has allowed us to correct and improve in a fast way the successive versions of the product. The present project is structured in Sprints, which cover the different stages of the software development based on the requirements imposed by the robot and its real necessities. We have initially explored different commercial devices oriented to the acquisition of the required visual information, adopting the Kinect Sensor camera (Microsoft) as the most suitable option. Later on, we have studied the available software to manage the obtained visual information as well as its integration with the robot’s software, choosing the high-level platform Matlab as the common nexus to join the management of the camera, the management of the robot and the implementation of the behavioral algorithms. During the last stages the software has been developed to include the fundamental functionalities required to process the real environment, such as depth representation, segmentation, and clustering. Finally the software has been optimized to exhibit real-time processing and a suitable performance to fulfill the robot’s requirements during its operation in real situations.

ABSTRACT Studies of earthquakes over the last 50 years and the examination of dynamic soil behavior reveal that soil behavior is highly nonlinear and hysteretic even at small strains. Nonlinear behavior of soils during a seismic event has a predominant role in current site response analysis. One-dimensional seismic ground response analysis are often performed using equivalent-linear procedures, which require few, generally well-known parameters. Nonlinear analyses have the potential to more accurately simulate soil behavior, but their implementation in practice has been limited because of poorly documented and unclear parameter selection, as well as inadequate documentation of the benefits of nonlinear modeling relative to equivalent linear modeling. In soil analysis, soil behaviour is approximated as a Kelvin-Voigt solid with a elastic shear modulus and viscous damping. In linear and nonlinear analysis more complex geometries and more complex rheological models are being considered. The first is being addressed by considering richer parametrizations of the linearized behavior and the second by using multi-mode spring-dashpot elements with eventual fractional damping. The use of fractional calculus is motivated in large part by the fact that fewer parameters are required to achieve accurate approximation of experimental data. Based in Kelvin-Voigt model the viscoelastodynamics is revisited from its most standard formulation to some more advanced description involving frequency-dependent damping (or viscosity), analyzing the effects of considering fractional derivatives for representing such viscous contributions. We will prove that such a choice results in richer models that can accommodate different constraints related to the dissipated power, response amplitude and phase angle. Moreover, the use of fractional derivatives allows to accommodate in parallel, within a generalized Kelvin-Voigt analog, many dashpots that contribute to increase the modeling flexibility for describing experimental findings. Obviously these rich models involve many parameters, the ones associated with the behavior and the ones related to the fractional derivatives. The parametric analysis of all these models require efficient numerical techniques able to simulate complex behaviors. The Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) is the perfect candidate for producing such kind of parametric solutions. We can compute off-line the parametric solution for the soil deposit, for all parameter of the model, as soon as such parametric solutions are available, the problem can be solved in real time because no new calculation is needed, the solver only needs particularize on-line the parametric solution calculated off-line, which will alleviate significantly the solution procedure. Within the PGD framework material parameters and the different derivation powers could be introduced as extra-coordinates in the solution procedure. Fractional calculus and the new model reduction method called Proper Generalized Decomposition has been applied in this thesis to the linear analysis and nonlinear soil response analysis using a equivalent linear method.
