Continuous Plankton Recorder data suggest that the Irminger Sea supports a major proportion of the surface-living population of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus in the northern North Atlantic, but there have been few studies of its population dynamics in the region. In this paper, we document the seasonal changes in the demographic structure of C finmarchicus in the Irminger Sea from a field programme during 2001/2002, and the associations between its developmental stages and various apparent bio-physical zones. Overwintering stages were found widely at depth (>500 m) across the Irminger Sea, and surviving females were widely distributed in the surface waters the following spring. However, recruitment of the subsequent generation was concentrated around the fringes of the Irminger Sea basin, along the edges of the Irminger and East Greenland Currents, and not in the central basin. In late summer animals were found descending back to overwintering depths in the Central Irminger Sea. The key factors dictating this pattern of recruitment appear to be (a) the general circulation regime, (b) predation on eggs in the spring, possibly by the surviving GO stock, and (c) mortality of first feeding naupliar stages in the central basin where food concentrations appear to be low throughout the year. We compared the demographic patterns in 2001/2002 with observations from the only previous major survey in 1963 and with data from the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) surveys. In both previous data sets, the basic structure of GO ascent from the central basin and G1 recruitment around the fringes was a robust feature, suggesting that it is a recurrent phenomenon. The Irminger Sea is a complex mixing zone between polar and Atlantic water masses, and it has also been identified as a site of sporadic deep convection. The physical oceanographic characteristics of the region are therefore potentially sensitive to climate fluctuations. Despite this, the abundance of C finmarchicus in the region, as measured by the CPR surveys, appears not to have responded to climate factors linked to the North Atlantic Oscillation Index, in contrast with the stocks in eastern Atlantic areas. We speculate that this may because biological factors (production and mortality), rather than transport processes are the key factors affecting the population dynamics in the Irminger Sea. A series of thin films comprising gold nanorods embedded in an alumina matrix have been fabricated with lengths ranging from 75 to 330 nm. Their optical properties, expressed in terms of extinction - In(T), where T is optical transmittance, have been measured as a function of wavelength, rod length, angle of incidence, and incident polarization state. The results are compared to a Maxwell-Garnett based theory modified to take into account the strongly anisotropic nature of the medium. Transverse and longitudinal plasmon resonances are observed. The interaction between the nanorods leads to the splitting of the longitudinal resonance with the longer-wavelength resonance being forbidden for direct optical observations. The shorter-wavelength resonance related to the symmetric coupling between longitudinal plasma excitations in the nanorods depends on rod length, polarization state, and angle of incidence of the probing light. The impact of electron confinement on the optical properties of the gold rods is also seen and may be incorporated into the Maxwell-Garnett theory by restricting the mean free path of the conduction electrons to produce excellent agreement between observations and the complete theory. Annealing experiments that modify the physical structure of the gold confirm this conclusion.

In situ ellipsometry and Kerr polarimetry have been used to follow the continuous evolution of the optical and magneto- optical properties of multiple layers of Co and Pd during their growth. Films were sputter deposited onto a Pd buffer layer on glass substrates up to a maximum of N = 10 bi-layer periods according to the scheme glass/Pd(10)Ar x (0.3Co/3Pd) (nm). Magnetic hysteresis measurements taken during the deposition consistently showed strong perpendicular anisotropy at all stages of film growth following the deposition of a single monolayer of Co. Magneto-optic signals associated with the normal-incidence polar Kerr effect indicated strong polarization of Pd atoms at both Co-Pd and Pd-Co interfaces and that the magnitude of the complex magneto-optic Voigt parameter and the magnetic moment of the Pd decrease exponentially with distance from the interface with a decay constant of 1.1 nm(- 1). Theoretical simulations have provided an understanding of the observations and allow the determination of the ultrathin- film values of the elements of the skew-symmetric permittivity tensor that describe the optical and magneto-optical properties for both CO and Pd. Detailed structure in the observed Kerr ellipticity shows distinct Pd-thickness-dependent oscillations with a spatial period of about 1.6 nm that are believed to be associated with quantum well levels in the growing Pd layer.

Co films deposited on obliquely sputtered Pt underlayers of 100 Angstrom or greater have produced coercivities in excess of 800 Oe, and anisotropy fields over 950 Oe. The coercivity and anisotropy field increase with Pt deposition angle and thickness. A Pt capping layer has a detrimental effect on properties but a Cu capping layer does not. Films with an obliquely deposited underlayer exhibit reduced density and increased interface roughness compared to normally deposited films. Normally deposited Pt underlayers display a (111) texture, while those deposited obliquely show an increasingly random texture with Pt thickness and deposition angle. The trilayers fabricated in this study are presented as candidates for use in giant magnetoresistance sensors. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.
