Cobalt nanowires with controlled diameters have been synthesized using electrochemical deposition in etched ion-track polycarbonate membranes. Structural characterization of these nanowires with diameter 70, 90, 120 nm and length 30 mu m was performed by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The as-prepared wires show uniform diameter along the whole length and X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that [002] texture of these wires become more pronounced as diameter is reduced. Magnetic characterization of the nanowires shows a clear difference of squareness and coercivity between parallel and perpendicular orientations of the wires with respect to the applied field direction. In case of parallel applied field, the coercivity has been found to be decreasing with increasing diameter of the wires while in perpendicular case; the coercivity observes lower values for larger diameter. The results are explained by taking into account the magnetocrystalline and shape anisotropies with respect to the applied field and domain transformation mechanism when single domain limit is surpassed.

Colloidal alumina was used to improve the activity of an In/HZSM-5 catalyst for the selective reduction of NO with CH4 in the excess of oxygen. Compared with In/HZSM-5, the In/HZSM-5/Al2O3 catalyst showed higher activity in a wide range of reaction temperatures. It is visualized that a synergetic effect between In/HZSM-5 and Al2O3 enhances the conversion of NOx. The addition of Al2O3 improved the conversion of NO to NO2 and facilitated the activation of methane. An In/HZSM-5/Al2O3 pre-treated with steam for 15 h at 700 degreesC still showed a high activity for the removal of NOx with methane, while an In/HZSM-5 similarly pre-treated with steam showed a lower activity than the fresh sample. The activity of the In/HZSM-5/Al2O3 catalyst could be restored completely after water vapor was removed from the feed gas. Furthermore, it was found that the In/HZSM-5/Al2O3 remained fairly active under high GHSV and O-2 concentration conditions. It was also interesting to find that an increase in NO content could enhance the conversion of methane, and this illustrates that the existence of NO is beneficial for the activation of methane. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the Mg-7Y-4Gd-xZn-0.4Zr (x = 0.5, 1.5, 3, and 5 wt.%) alloys in the as-cast, as-extruded, and peak-aged conditions have been investigated by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the peak-aged Mg-7Y-4Gd-1.5Zn-0.4Zr alloys have the highest strength after aging at 220 A degrees C. The highest ultimate tensile strength and yield tensile strength are 418 and 320 MPa, respectively. The addition of 1.5 wt.% Zn to the based alloys results in a greater aging effect and better mechanical properties at both room and elevated temperatures. The improved mechanical properties are mainly ascribed to both a fine beta' phase and a long periodic stacking-ordered structure, which coexist together in the peak-aged alloys.

Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), a saturated polyester, derived from ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone, was chemically crosslinked with various amounts of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) by a two-step method by first evenly dispersing the BPO into the PCL matrix and then crosslinking at elevated temperature. The gel fraction increased with an increase in BPO content. The modified Charlesby-Pinner equation was used to calculate the ratio of chain scission and crosslinking. The results showed that both scission and crosslinking occurred, and that crosslinking predominated over scission. The number-average molecular weight between the crosslinks determined by the rubber elasticity theory using the hot set test showed a decrease with increasing BPO content. The melting temperature and crystallinity decreased with an increase in BPO content, and the crystallization temperature increased after crosslinking. Dynamic mechanical analysis results showed a decrease in the glass transition temperature as a result of chemical crosslinking of PCL. This was explained by the observed reduction in crystallinity and the increase in free volume due to restrictions in chain packing.

The branched copolymers prepared from ethylene and alpha-olefins using rac-Et(Ind)(2)ZrCl2/MMAO catalyst system were studied. Both the absolute molecular weight ((M) over bar (W)) and the molecular size (radius of glyration, R-g) of the polymers eluting from gel permeation chromatography (GPC) columns were obtained simultaneously via a high temperature GPC coupled with a two-angle laser light scattering (TALLS) detector. The branched structures and performances of the copolymers display approximate molecular weight and molecular sizes were investigated. Wide angle X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that 16-carbon side branch could co-crystallize effectively with backbone chain at low alpha-olefin incorporation. The melt behaviors of the copolymers were studied by dynamic rheological measurements. Both branch length and comonomer content affect considerably the loss modulus, storage modulus and complex viscosity of the copolymers. The relationship between the dynamic-mechanical behavior and the comonomer content of the copolymers was also examined by dynamic-mechanical experiments.

In this Letter, crystal growth of a symmetric crystalline-amorphous diblock copolymer, poly(styrene-b-epsilon-caprolactone) (PS-b-PCL), in thin films was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Relief structures of holes and islands were formed during annealing the film at the molten state, and the in situ observation of subsequent crystal growth at room temperature indicated that the crystals were preferred to occur at the edge of holes or islands and grew into the interior area. It was concluded that the stretched PCL blocks at the edge of relief structures, caused by material transportation or deformation of the interface, could act as nucleation agents during polymer crystallization. The crystal growth rate of individual lamellae varied both from lamellae to lamellae and in time, but the area occupied by crystals increased constantly with time. At 22 degreesC, the growth rate was 1.2 x 10(-2) mum(2)/min with the scan size 2 x 2 mum(2).

A multiphase model of metal ion speciation in human interstitial fluid was constructed and the effect of Pr(III) on Ca(II) speciation was studied. Results show that free Ca2+, [Ca(HCO3)], and [Ca(Lac)] are the main species of Ca(II). Because of the competition of Pr(III) for ligands with Ca(II), the percentages of free Ca2+, [Ca(Lac)], and [Ca(His)(Thr)H-3] increase gradually and the percentages of CaHPO4(aq) and [Ca(Cit)(His)H-2] decrease gradually with the increase in the total concentration of Pr(III). However, the percentages of [Ca(HCO3)] and CaCO3(aq) first increase and then begin to decrease when the total concentration of Pr(III) exceeds 6.070 x 10(-4) M.

The effect of LB monolayers on the mixed crystal was investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The results show that LB monolayer has selectivity for the different nucleation ions with equal charge numbers and about the same ion radius. The selectivity is dependent on the head groups of monolayer. The monolayer and the doped ions have also an effect on the crystal morphology. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. In an acidic aqueous solution of acetonitrile, the catalytic activity of the catalysts consisted of Pd(OAc)(2)/hydroquinone(HQ) with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) from various sources was obviously different in the oxidation of cyclohexene to cyclohexanone, The analysis of the FePc using IR spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and BET surface area measurement indicated that the catalytic activity of the multicomponent catalytic system composed of iron phthalocyanines depends on the amount of mu -oxo FePc, the crystallinity and the surface structure of iron phthalocyanine.

The structural relaxation process of an inorganic glass (Li2O . 2SiO(2)) at an ageing temperature of 703 K for an ageing time of 1 h has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. A four-parameter model-the Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan (TNM)-model was applied to simulate the normalized specific heat curve measured. A set of optimized parameters, Delta h*/R,beta,InA, and x was obtained. Then the effects of variation of each adjustable parameter on the calculated specific heat were summarized. The variations of unit cell parameters and crystallite size of nine PEEK samples treated at various temperatures have been studied by using Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD), The results indicate a decrease in unit cell parameter a,b and c but an increase in crystallite size L(hkl) With the increase beat treatment temperature. Based on X-ray scattering intensity theory and using the graphic multipeak resolution method, the formula of degree of crystallinity (W-c,W-X) for PEEK is derived. The results calculated are compatible with the density measurement and calorimetry.

The rare earth complex oxides with different types have been synthesized. Their structures and electric properties have been investigated. According to our experimental results, the effects of the outest shell electronic configuration, electron spin state, electron transport path and formation of cluster on the electric properties of rare earth complex oxides have been summarized. When the electrons in the outest shell of the central metallic ion are unpair, and the outest shell is not half-filled, the electric conductibilities of these compounds are better, If there is a -M-X-M-X- or -M-M-M- (the distances between two atoms <0.31 nm) continuous electron transport path, and the electron configurations of the central metallic ion conform to the above condition, then the electric conductibilities are good, The isolate cluster can not become the continuous electron transport path, therefore, the formation of the isolate cluster will reduce the conductibility.
