Die "Wemütige Klage der frommen Unschültigen" des ehemaligen Rheinbacher Schöffen Hermann Löher (gedruckt zu Amsterdam 1676) war gedacht als eine Anklageschrift gegen den Wahnsinn der Hexenverfolgungen und richtete sich in erster Linie an den Papst, den Kaiser und alle Fürsten und hohen Geistlichen des Reiches. Damit fällt die "Wemütige Klage" eigentlich unter die Kategorie 'Sachbuch' und nicht unter 'Autobiographie'. Doch durch den Erzählstil des Autors, der selbst bei der Diskussion der dämonologischen Literatur seiner Zeit immer wieder sein eigenes Erleben als Gerichtsschöffe einbringt, gerät die sachliche Erörterung unversehens zum Ego-Dokument.

The cobblers stick to their lasts: pollinators prefer native over alien plant species in a multi-species experiment

The majority of plant species rely, at least partly, on animals for pollination. Our knowledge on whether pollinator visitation differs between native and alien plant species, and between invasive and non-invasive alien species is still limited. Additionally, because numerous invasive plant species are escapees from horticulture, the transition from human-assisted occurrence in urbanized habitats to unassisted persistence and spread in (semi-)natural habitats requires study. To address whether pollinator visitation differs between native, invasive alien and non-invasive alien species, we did pollinator observations for a total of 17 plant species representing five plant families. To test whether pollinator visitation to the three groups of species during the initial stage of invasion depends on habitat type, we did the study in three urbanized habitats and three semi-natural grasslands, using single potted plants. Native plants had more but smaller flower units than alien plants, and invasive alien plants had more but smaller flowers than non-invasive alien plants. After accounting for these differences in floral display, pollinator visitation was higher for native than for alien plant species, but did not differ between invasive and non-invasive alien plant species. Pollinator visitation was on average higher in semi-natural than in urbanized habitats, irrespective of origin or status of the plant species. This might suggest that once an alien species has managed to escape from urbanized into more natural habitats, pollinator limitation will not be a major barrier to establishment and invasion.

Tiefengrundwasser findet sich in allen grosstektonischen Einheiten der Schweiz. Die bekannten, teilweise genutzten Vorkommen von Tiefengrundwas-ser und insbesondere die chemische Zusammensetzung dieser Wässer wird für die verschiedenen Einheiten aufgezeigt. Im Hinblick auf mögliche Nutzungskon-flikte werden die gesetzlichen Grundlagen und Massnahmen zum Schutz dieser Ressource diskutiert.

Pastoral-Farmer conflicts over natural resources in the Lake Rukwa basin : Challenges facing policy makers in Tanzania

Despite the important role that pastoralism plays in supporting rural livelihoods, national economy and diverse ecological services, its capacity to adapt to change is facing many challenges including adverse policy, pastoral-farmer conflicts and recently, adverse climate change. The recurring conflicts between the two groupings are rather a result of a reaction by a community which has been marginalized over the years. A survey to analyze conflicts, institutional frameworks, policies, laws and regulations governing NRs utilization by pastoral and farmers was conducted in the Lake Rukwa Basin in 2008. The study noted violent conflicts and their causes, including the scarcity of NRs, poor local institutional frameworks and deeper socio-cultural aspects among pastoralists and farmers. The conflicts have become major impediments to the developmental activities in the study areas, to a degree that requires intervention. This, therefore, calls for reorganization of local institutional framework, policies, laws and regulations and participatory planning and co-management of NRs as part of conflicts management and sustainable utilization of them. Detection of muscle wasting in patients with chronic heart failure using C-terminal agrin fragment: results from the Studies Investigating Co-morbidities Aggravating Heart Failure (SICA-HF).

AIMS Skeletal muscle wasting affects 20% of patients with chronic heart failure and has serious implications for their activities of daily living. Assessment of muscle wasting is technically challenging. C-terminal agrin-fragment (CAF), a breakdown product of the synaptically located protein agrin, has shown early promise as biomarker of muscle wasting. We sought to investigate the diagnostic properties of CAF in muscle wasting among patients with heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS We assessed serum CAF levels in 196 patients who participated in the Studies Investigating Co-morbidities Aggravating Heart Failure (SICA-HF). Muscle wasting was identified using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in 38 patients (19.4%). Patients with muscle wasting demonstrated higher CAF values than those without (125.1 ± 59.5 pmol/L vs. 103.8 ± 42.9 pmol/L, P = 0.01). Using receiver operating characteristics (ROC), we calculated the optimal CAF value to identify patients with muscle wasting as >87.5 pmol/L, which had a sensitivity of 78.9% and a specificity of 43.7%. The area under the ROC curve was 0.63 (95% confidence interval 0.56-0.70). Using simple regression, we found that serum CAF was associated with handgrip (R = - 0.17, P = 0.03) and quadriceps strength (R = - 0.31, P < 0.0001), peak oxygen consumption (R = - 0.5, P < 0.0001), 6-min walk distance (R = - 0.32, P < 0.0001), and gait speed (R = - 0.2, P = 0.001), as well as with parameters of kidney and liver function, iron metabolism and storage. CONCLUSION CAF shows good sensitivity for the detection of skeletal muscle wasting in patients with heart failure. Its assessment may be useful to identify patients who should undergo additional testing, such as detailed body composition analysis. As no other biomarker is currently available, further investigation is warranted.

Ein klares Wort zur rechten Zeit. Die päpstliche Enzyklika Laudato si' in protestantischer Sicht

Im Beitrag geht es um eine kritische Würdigung der ersten Sozialenzyklika Papst Franziskus' aus evangelischer Sicht. Betont werden die Parallelen zwischen Laudato Si' und der protestantischen Tradition des Nachhaltigkeitsdenkens seit den siebziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Wichtige Parallelen liegen in der Verbindung von Ökologie und sozialer Gerechtigkeit, im Hinweis auf die Ungleichverteilung der Macht und die Notwendigkeit entsprechender Reformen, in der genauen Krisenwahrnehmung und der Aufmerksamkeit für eine Nachhaltigkeitskultur, im Selbstverständnis der Enzyklika als Diskursangebot eher denn als Lehrschreiben. Zudem formuliert der Autor aus protestantischer Perspektive kritische Anfragen an das Moderne- und Naturverständnis der Enzyklika.
