The endocannabinoid system includes important signaling molecules that are involved in several homeostatic and neuroendocrine functions. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the type 1 cannabinoid (CB(1)) receptor antagonist, rimonabant (10 mg/kg, p.o.), on hormone secretion, neuronal activation and mRNA expression in the hypothalamus following isotonic (I-) or hypertonic (H-) extracellular volume expansion (EVE). The total nitrate content in the PVN and SON was also assessed under the same experimental conditions. Our results showed that OT and AVP plasma concentrations were increased in response to H-EVE, while decreased AVP levels were found following I-EVE. Accordingly, both I- and H-EVE stimulated oxytocinergic neuronal activation, as evidenced by the increased number of c-Fos/OT double labeled neurons in the hypothalamus. The vasopressinergic cells of the PVN and SON, however, were only activated in response to H-EVE. Furthermore, increased amounts of both AVP and OT mRNAs were found in the hypothalamus following EVE. Pretreatment with rimonabant significantly potentiated hormone secretion and also vasopressinergic and oxytocinergic neuronal activation induced by EVE, although decreased AVP and OT mRNA expression was found in the hypothalami of rimonabant pretreated groups. In addition, the nitrate content in the PVN and SON was not altered in response to EVE or rimonabant pretreatment. Taken together, these results suggest that the CB(1) receptor may modulate several events that contribute to the development of appropriate responses to increased fluid volume and osmolality. Recent evidence has shown that the serotonergic mechanism of the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) participates in the regulation of renal and hormonal responses to isotonic blood volume expansion (BVE). We investigated the BVE-induced Fos activation along forebrain and hindbrain nuclei and particularly within the serotonergic clusters of the raphe system that directly project to the LPBN. We also examined whether there are changes in the concentration of serotonin (5HT) within the raphe nucleus in response to the same stimulus. With this purpose, we analyzed the cells doubly labeled for Fos and Fluorogold (FG) following BVE (NaCl 0.15 M, 2 ml/100 g b.w., 1 min) 7 days after FG injection into the LPBN. Compared with the control group, blood volume-expanded rats showed a significant greater number of Fos-FG double-labeled cells along the nucleus of the solitary tract, locus coeruleus, hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, central extended amygdala complex, and dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) cells. Our study also showed an increase in the number of serotonergic DRN neurons activated in response to isotonic BVE. We also observed decreased levels of 5HT and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography) within the raphe nucleus 15 min after BVE. Given our previous evidence on the role of the serotonergic system in the LPBN after BVE, the present morphofunctional findings suggest the existence of a key pathway (DRN-LPBN) that may control BVE response through the modulation of 5HT release. Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles of children having rapid maxillary expansion (RME) with a bonded rapid maxillary expansion appliance. Methods: The sample consisted of 27 children (mean age, 8.6 years) with posterior crossbite who required RME treatment. Electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles was analyzed before treatment and after the appliance was removed. The mean interval between the 2 analyses was 5 months. Muscular activity was electromyographically analyzed in rest position, and with maximum voluntary dental clenching and chewing. Differences in the 2 measurements were evaluated by using paired t tests. Results and Conclusions: Electromyographic analysis showed that activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles increased significantly after the expansion appliance was removed during rest, dental clenching, and habitual chewing. Objective: To evaluate the effect of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on the dimension of the nasopharyngeal space and its relation to nasal airway resistance. Methods: Twenty-five school-age children (from 7 to 10 year-old) with mouth and/or mixed breathing, with mixed dentition and uni- or bilateral posterior crossbite involving the deciduous canines and the first permanent molars, were evaluated. RME was placed and remained during 90 days. Rhinomanometry and orthodontic documentation were performed at four different times, i.e., before (T(1)), immediately after (T(2)), 90 days (T(3)) and 30 months (T(4)) after RME. Results: Differences in nasopharyngeal area and in nasal airway resistance were observed only 30 months after RME, and could be explained by facial growth, and not because of the orthodontic procedure. Conclusion: RME does not influence on nasopharyngeal area or nasal airway resistance in long-term evaluation. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background: Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) may improve the nasal respiratory pattern This study was performed to evaluate the effect of RME on the nasal cavity by acoustic rhinometry and computed rhinomanometry and to determine nasal and maxillary width by posteroanterior cephalometric radiography, up to 30 months after the orthodontic procedure Methods: Twenty-seven children with oral breathing, ranging in age from 7 to 70 years, and with mixed dentition were selected The children had unior bilateral posterior crossbite involving deciduous canines and the first permanent molars All subjects were submitted to nasofibroscopy, acoustic rhinometry, and computed rhinomanometry and posteroanterior cephalometric radiography at four different tunes, i e, before expansion, immediately, 90 days and 30 months after expansion Results: The mean linear left-to-right nasal cavity lateral prominence and left-to-right jugal ponds cephalometric measures increased considerably after expansion and this increase was maintained throughout the period of evaluation There was an immediate significant decrease in nasal resistance, up to 90 days after RME, but the nasal resistance increased 30 months after the procedure The acoustic rhinometry results did not show any difference in values throughout time Conclusion: RME significantly increased nasal and maxillary width as measured by frontal cephalometry, but the nasal mucosal effects were more subtle Also, the influence of RME on nasal resistance was not stable, and nasal resistance values returned to close to the initial ones after 30 months (Am J Rhinol Allergy 24, 161-165, 2010, doi 10.2500/ajra.2010.24.3440)

Economic growth usually leads to a substantial increase in the demand for recreational fishing, and China is likely to follow this trend. Factors influencing this expansion in demand are identified. Recreational fishing is of major economic importance in higher income countries and indicators of its economic significance are given. Growing demand for recreational fishing results in intensified involvement of recreational fishers in conflicts about resource use. With increasing demand for recreational fishing, recreational fishers face growing competition with one another for limited fish stocks and with commercial fishers. Their concerns for environmental threats to fish stocks also intensify. Furthermore, some strategies of recreational fishers are increasingly criticised by conservationists. Governments, therefore, are put under pressure to adopt policies to address these conflicts. Some of the policy measures adopted to help sustain the fisheries and reduce conflict are outlined. These include limits on the catch and exclusive zones for recreational fishing. However, wild stocks of fish are likely to remain under mounting harvesting and other pressures. Therefore, we need to consider the role that aquaculture can play in overcoming these problems. The possible ways in which aquaculture can do this are outlined and discussed.

Introduction: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the long-term stability of maxillary incisor alignment in patients treated with and without rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Methods: The sample comprised 48 subjects with Class I and Class II malocclusions, treated without extractions with fixed edgewise appliances, divided into 2 groups according to the treatment protocol: group 1 comprised 25 patients (15 girls, 10 boys) at a mean initial age of 13.53 years (SD, 1.63), who had RME during orthodontic treatment. Group 2 comprised 23 patients (13 girls, 10 boys) at a mean initial age of 13.36 years (SD, 1.81 years), treated with fixed appliances without RME. Maxillary dental cast measurements were obtained at the pretreatment, posttreatment, and long-term posttreatment stages. Variables assessed were the irregularity index and maxillary arch dimensions. Intergroup comparisons were made with independent t tests. Results: Greater transverse increases were found during treatment in the group treated with RME. However, during the long-term posttreatment period, no significant difference was observed in the amount of incisor crowding relapse between the groups. Conclusions: RME did not influence long-term maxillary anterior alignment stability. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 2010; 137: 164. e1-164.e6)

The relationship between the ordering characteristic of the pyrochlore structure type and that characteristic of the defect fluorite structure type (immediately on either side of two phase regions separating the two structure types) in a range of rare eath sesquioxide stabilized cubic zirconias is investigated via electron diffraction and imaging. Systematic structural change as a function of composition and relative size of the constituent metal ions is highlighted and a multi-q to single-q = 1/2 [111]* model proposed for the observed pyrochlore to defect fluorite phase transition. Strain introduced into the close-packed {111} metal ion planes of the defect fluorite average structure by the local cation and oxygen vacancy distribution is pointed to as the likely origin of the observed behavior.
