The volume of liquid effluent generated in cattle slaughterhouses is quite high and cannot be released untreated in water bodies due to its high pollution load of predominantly organic origin. To minimize the environmental impacts of its industrial wastewater and meet the local environmental legislation, abattoirs shall make the treatment of these effluents. The present work aims to develop the study of a reactor by sequential batch pilot scale, in order to optimize their performance in treating wastewater from a cattle slaughterhouse. The treatment system used was developed and installed in the Laboratory of Wastewater Treatment, in Faculty of Science and Technology UNESP, Presidente Prudente campus. The procedure used followed the operation of sequential batch reactors, in which all processes and treatment operations occurring sequentially in a single unit, by establishing specific operating cycles, which comprise the following separated phases: aerobic reaction, anoxic reaction, sedimentation and emptying. Aiming to improve the quality of treatment was planned the addition of coagulant Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) in the reactor, by determining their optimal dosage by Jar-test trials. Were prepared four steps with specific operating cycles: step one or acclimatization (10 hour of aeration, one hour and 30 minutes of sedimentation and 30 minutes for exchanging the effluent); step 2 (6 hours of aeration or aerobic phase, 4 hours and 45 minutes of stirring or anoxic phase and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange effluent); step 3 (2 hours and 30 minutes of aeration, 8 hours and 15 minutes of stirring and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange) and step 4 (2 hours of aeration, 8 hours and 45 minutes of stirring and 1 hour and 15 minutes for sedimentation and exchange)... This study investigated the effect of slope and antecedent soil moisture on the water depth stored and percolated on extensive green roofs built in pilot scale. For this purpose, slopes of 10, 20 and 30% were investigated. Moisture was measured before and after each test to determine the differential moisture (ΔU). A rainfall simulator was designed and tested; the best arrangement presents a Christiansen Uniformity Coefficient of 56%. The results yielded that the slopes of 10% presented the highest values of water depth stored (59,88%), water depth percolated (77,15%), the slope of 30% presented the highest water depth drained (48,22%.) and there was no correlation between slope, water depth stored, water depth percolated and ΔU. It was verified the effect of dilution on the modules i10% between water depth percolated and apparent color (0.71%) in i20% between water depth drained and apparent color (-0.748%) and in the module i30% between water depth drained and turbidity (-0.76%) and water depth drained and apparent color (-0.93%). In i10% there was high correlation between pH and water depth percolated (0.94%) and between water depth drained and pH (0.71%). The data indicate that the module i10% had a greater reduction of runoff

Brazil occupies an outstanding position as a producer and exporter of chicken meat, and the maintenance and expansion of this position require a constant evolution, especially in variables which determine quality. An important quality parameter of poultry meat is the amount of water absorbed by the carcass during processing. In Brazil, carcasses chilling is done by immersion in chilled water. In this process, the carcass is rehydrated and the water lost during transport and initial operations is replaced. At this stage, some care is needed to prevent the absorption of water upper than the level allowed by Brazilian law. This project aimed to evaluate extrinsic factors that can influence the absorption of water by the chicken meat. For this, 144 Cobb chickens divided into 24 groups of six birds were used. At 42 days of age, one chicken of each group, with weight ranging up to 10% more or less from the average of the group, was slaughtered in an experimental pilot scale abattoir where slaughter procedures were conducted under strictly controlled conditions. The chilling procedure was performed following a completely randomized design with factorial arrangement 3x2, where the factors were: three temperatures in the first section of the chilling system (4, 10 and 16ºC) and two degrees of water hardness (hard and soft water), with six treatments and four replications. Brazilian law provides that the water temperature in the first section of the chiller must not be higher than 16ºC, and the length of the carcasses in this section shall not exceed 30 minutes. All carcasses remained in the first section of the chiller for 30 minutes and then were transferred to another tank with water at 4ºC, remaining there until reaching 7ºC. The carcasses were weighed before and after chilling, to evaluate the percentage of water absorbed. The water absorption was influenced by the initial temperature of the water in the chiller and by the water hardness. When initially immersed in water at 4ºC, carcasses water absorption averaged 2.70%, a significantly lower absorption than the values found for the carcasses that were initially immersed in water at 16ºC, 3.83% (p<0.05). The carcasses immersed in water at 10ºC had mean water absorption of 3.66%, not differing from the means observed in the other two treatments (p>0.05). In hard water, the average water absorption was 2.46% and, in soft water, 4.33% (p<0.05). In all treatments, the water absorption did not exceed the limit established by Brazilian legislation, which is a maximum of 8%. This information is important to control the absorption of water by carcasses in chicken meat processing, preventing consumers from being harmed.

This study investigated the effect of slope and antecedent soil moisture on the water depth stored and percolated on extensive green roofs built in pilot scale. For this purpose, slopes of 10, 20 and 30% were investigated. Moisture was measured before and after each test in order to determine the differential moisture (∆U). The experimental runoff and percolated flow were analyzed by varying moisture and slope. Apparent color and turbidity were measured on runoff and percolated flow for each one of the modules. The results yielded that for the slopes of 10% the smaller values of runoff was obtained (average of 1,01% ± 0,7%). For the others slopes (20% and 30%), the runoffs were around 35% ± 15%. The sum of runoff and percolated water results in 77% (average) for slope of 10% and 80% for 20% and 30%. The slope and moisture have explained 87% of data for retained water and 81% for runoff. For percolated flow the inverse trend was observed. The retained water was 11,6±1,4mm for the module with 10% of slope, around 10,0±1,2 mm for the module with 20% of slope, and about 9,5±1,1 mm for the module with 30%. The results pointed out that both slope and antecedent moisture are crucial for runoff reduction and for material transportation.

The main article aim was to investigate the collecting system of a dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit in pilot scale. Referring to the collecting system position, two options were analyzed: (i) top manifold and (ii) bottom manifold, pipes or plates. Qualitative and quantitative essays were performed, as image and stimulusresponse tests, respectively. The results of the essays standardized were adjusted by N-continuous stirred tank reactors in series and theoretical models of dispersion (low and high). The bottom manifold (plates with orifices) was more appropriate. The results pointed out that the N-continuous stirred tank reactors in series model was more adequate to describe the hydrodynamic behavior of the DAF unit.

In some operational circumstances a fast evaluation of landfill leachate anaerobic treatability is necessary, and neither Biochemical Methane Potential nor BOD/COD ratio are fast enough. Looking for a fast indicator, this work evaluated the anaerobic treatability of landfill leachate from São Carlos-SP (Brazil) in a pilot scale Anaerobic Sequence Batch Biofilm Reactor (AnSBBR). The experiment was conducted at ambient temperature in the landfill area. After the acclimation, at a second stage of operation, the AnSBBR presented efficiency above 70%, in terms of COD removal, utilizing landfill leachate without water dilution, with an inlet COD of about 11,000 mg.L-1, a TVA/COD ratio of approximately 0.6 and reaction time equal to 7 days. To evaluate the landfill leachate biodegradability variation over time, temporal profiles of concentration were performed in the AnSBBR. The landfill leachate anaerobic biodegradability was verified to have a direct and strong relationship to the TVA/COD ratio. For a TVA/CODTotal ratio lower than 0.20, the biodegradability was considered low, for ratios between 0.20 and 0.40 it was considered medium, and above 0.40 it was considered high.
