The Araucaria Forest is now represented by remnants of what was a continuous area of about 200,000 km(2). Medium and large mammals inhabiting this forest have suffered the impacts from the disturbance process and environmental degradation. Thus, this study determined which medium and large mammal species still inhabit the remnants of this vegetation type in Western Parana State. Three study areas, with 520, 405 and 135 hectares, consisting of stretches of primary forest mixed with secondary forest, were considered for mammal inventory. The evidence of mammals was verified directly (views) and indirectly (traces, trichology and interviews with local dwellers). It was recorded 32 species (including one exotic and two small ones), belonging to eight orders and 18 families. Nine animals of these species are at risk of extinction in the Parana State and five configure with insufficient data in the List of Endangered Species of the state. The results of this study indicate the great importance of these forest fragments in the conservation of several medium and large mammals in the Araucaria Forest of Parana State. Nevertheless, due to the negative pressures that these areas have been suffering, immediate and concrete public actions are required to ensure the maintenance of these mammal populations.

The persistence of straw, as well as the dynamics of nutrients release of it, are important aspects to consider in the choice of plants for composition of crop rotations in a no tillage system. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the decomposition rate and macronutrients and silicon (Si) release from sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) phytomass, as a function of management, with and without fragmentation. A randomized blocks design, with four replications, in a factorial 2x6, constituted by two aboveground phytomass management after 75 days after emergence (with and without mechanical fragmentation) and six sampling times (0, 18, 32, 46, 74 and 91 days after management (DAM)), were evaluated the decomposition rate and nutrient release from sunn hemp biomass. The mechanical fragmentation of sunn hemp straw did not change the decomposition and macronutrients release. The maximum release rates occurred 0-18 DAM. Potassium is the most rapidly available nutrient, while the silicon is more slowly released to the ground. Over time there has been increasing Si content in the straw.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the persistency of foramen of Huschke by means of computed tomography study of the ear region and approaching important clinical aspects related to the presence of this anatomical anomaly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two examiners have analyzed the whole tympanic portion of temporal bone in 150 bilateral computed tomography studies of the ear region, searching for foramen of Huschke presence or absence. RESULTS: The mentioned anatomical anomaly was found in 17 cases (11.3%), 13 patients (76.5%) being female and four (23.5%) male. This higher female incidence is statistically confirmed. CONCLUSION: Ear and/or temporomandibular joint specialists should turn their attention to the persistency of foramen of Huschke.

Prostatic diseases have been a common problem in middle age and older intact male dogs. Among these, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP) is the most frequent, age-related and hormonal-dependent condition of human and canine prostate. Blood samples were collected from 37 male intact dogs, tree years old dogs or more to determine androgens, estrogen, prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) and prostatic specific antigen (PSA) according to histopathological aspects. Low levels of estrogen and high levels of prostatic specific antigen (PSA) were founded in dogs with BHP, respectively. Seric and urinary PAP levels were high in dogs with hyperplasia.

Objetiva ensinar a três macacos-prego adultos jovens, um macho e duas fêmeas, experimentalmente ingênuos, relações condicionais de identidade (IDMTS) com quatro comparações, identificando e produzindo topografias de controle de estímulo supostamente facilitadoras da formação de relações de equivalência. Analisada a persistência comportamental, apoiando-se nas teorias da coerência de topografia de controle de estímulos e do momento comportamental, e nos estudos já realizados na Escola Experimental de Primatas. Os participantes foram treinados a tocar estímulos projetados na tela sensível de um computador acoplado a uma câmara experimental e passaram por: 1) Treino de discriminações simples simultâneas e mudanças de discriminações, no qual alternaram-se tentativas com uma e quatro escolhas, imitando o display de sessões de IDMTS; 2) Treino de IDMTS com quatro modelos e duas ou três comparações, alternando os estímulos com função de S-; 3) Treino de IDMTS com quatro comparações. O responder persistente do M21 nas mudanças de discriminações simples foi resolvido com a retirada do S+ anterior quando um novo estímulo passava a funcionar como S+. A semelhança estrutural entre as sessões de discriminação simples e IDMTS não foi suficiente para o estabelecimento de um responder sob controle do modelo. M18 e M21 chegaram ao desempenho de IDMTS, enquanto M20 passou por treino com exigência de razão randômica ao modelo e vem apresentando melhora gradual de desempenho.
