O presente estudo comparou adolescentes infratores e não-infratores com relação a dois aspectos: grau de adversidade familiar e grau de concordância entre a autopercepção e a percepção dos pais sobre problemas de comportamento dos jovens. Participaram deste estudo 40 adolescentes, 23 atendidos no Centro de Atenção e Apoio ao Adolescente (UNIFESP) e 17 adolescentes considerados infratores sob intervenção da Vara da Infância e da Juventude da comarca de Santos. Os instrumentos utilizados foram o Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Youth Self Report (YSR) e o Índice de Adversidade Familiar de Rutter. O Índice de Adversidade Familiar do grupo de adolescentes infratores foi significativamente maior. Os resultados apontaram ainda que, embora a diferença não tenha sido estatisticamente significante, a porcentagem dos escores de discordância nas percepções sobre problemas de comportamento foi maior entre os adolescentes infratores e seus pais.

A great challenge for the primary healthcare system, implemented by the strategy called the Family Health Program, is to incorporate actions for facing situations of violence and mental health problems. This study analyzed the care delivered to 411 children between five and eleven years of age in a primary care unit in the city of São Paulo. The clinical findings were compared to a standard inventory of symptoms (CBCL). In addition, semi-structured interviews were held with pediatricians. The study shows low capacity of the pediatricians to recognize mental health problems in children. This is mainly due to deficiencies in their training and lack of possibilities for concrete intervention to face a complaint or diagnostic hypothesis. The reorganization process of primary care will need to provide specific technical support in mental health, incorporating more appropriate technologies for intervention such as a humanized approach and qualified listening. The inclusion of psychosocial aspects in the everyday practice of primary care will make it possible to broaden the concept of health and open way for an integrated approach to situations of violence related to children assisted by the primary care network of the Brazilian Health System.

Prevalence and comorbidity of behavioral problems of children aged three to six: Results of the Braunschweiger Kindergartenstudie Objectives: To analyze the frequency of behavioral and emotional problems and comorbidity of kindergarten children in Braunschweig as rated by their parents. Method: The analysis is part of the Braunschweiger Kindergartenstudie. In a sample of N = 809 children aged three to six the parents rated their children using a modified version of the Child Behavior Checklist/CBCL 4-18. Results: The prevalence rates range from 0.5% to 5.0%. The most frequent behavioral problems in kindergarten children were aggressive behavior and attention problems, followed by social problems. The study also provides bidirectional comorbidity rates. Conclusion: Finally the prevalence rates and the implications of the findings for prevention of behavioral problems in children are discussed.

Background: Detection of aquaporin-4-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) has expanded the spectrum of neuromyelitis optica (NMO). Rare reports of familial aggregation have suggested a component of genetic susceptibility but these reports mostly antedated the discovery of the NMO-IgG biomarker and recently updated diagnostic criteria. Methods: We report a case series describing the demographic, clinical, neuroimaging, and NMO-IgG serologic status of 12 multiplex NMO pedigrees with a total of 25 affected individuals. Results: Twenty-one patients (84%) were women. Families were Asian (n = 5), Latino (n = 4), white (n = 1), or African (n = 2). Apparent transmission was either maternal (n = 5) or paternal (n = 2). In 1 family, 3 individuals had NMO; in the others, 2 individuals were affected. Sibling pairs (n = 6), parent-child (n = 4), and aunt-niece (n = 3) pairs were observed. Nineteen patients (76%) were NMO-IgG positive. Twelve (48%) had clinical or serologic evidence of another autoimmune disease. Familial occurrence of NMO occurs in approximately 3% of patients with well-established diagnosis of NMO. Conclusions: A small proportion of patients with NMO have relatives with this condition, but familial occurrence is more common than would be expected from its frequency in the general population. Familial NMO is indistinguishable from sporadic NMO based on clinical symptoms, age at onset, sex distribution, and frequency of NMO-IgG detection. One or 2 generations were affected and affected individuals represented a small fraction of family members. Taken together, these data suggest complex genetic susceptibility in NMO. Purpose: The effects of anxiety on the patient and his/her family are known to be the main factors that influence health recovery in child surgery. When the whole family can be prepared and supported by psychologic intervention, the damage to child behavior and family anxiety is attenuated. Methods: This study was conducted in children between 2 and 6 years old, divided into 2 groups of 10 pairs each. The experimental group received psychologic intervention, whereas the control group did not. One month after the surgery, they were reevaluated and compared with the same instruments used in the beginning of the study. The instruments used were as follows: the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory with the mothers and the Rutter`s Child Behavior A2 Scale and the Posthospital Behavior Questionnaire with the children. Results: The results were compared by the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney nonparametric tests for independent samples, both at the P <.05 significance levels. Mothers stated that anxiety was different in the postsurgery period, showing a significant decrease when comparing the experimental and control groups. Both instruments to measure child behavior also showed that prepared children had less habit changes than the control group, which showed increased levels of inadequate behavior. Conclusions: These data confirm reports in literature regarding child preparation before medical intervention and reinforces the importance of specialized presurgery planning procedures by the proper professional interfaced with the surgical colleagues, all aiming toward the best recovery for the children. Behavioral problems in preschool children are one of the most frequent motives for seeking psychological care by parents and caregivers. Instruments are considered necessary, created from a Social Skills Training theoretical-practical perspective, which may systematically assist the identification of social skills and behavioral deficits. helping professionals in the prevention and/or reduction of behavioral problems. The purpose of this study was to test the psychometric validity and reliability of an instrument for evaluation of Socially Skilled Responses. from a teacher`s perspective (QRSH-PR). For this purpose, 260 preschool children were evaluated. differentiated in subgroups without and without behavioral difficulties, based on the Child Behavior Scale (Escala de Comportamento Infantil/ECI-Professor). Studies were conducted for construct. discrimination. concurrent and predictive validity. The Cronbach Alpha was calculated to evaluate internal consistency. The obtained results pointed to positive indicators in reference to construct, discrimination, and predictive validity, and even for good internal consistency. indicating that the items consistently measure the construct of social skills, and differentiated children with and without behavioral problems. The questionnaire is considered to be gauged for evaluation of socially skilled responses from preschool children. and applicable in educational and clinical environments.

Introduction: Bruxism is characterized by repeated tooth grinding or clenching. The condition can occur in all age ranges and in both genders, being related or not to other oral habits. Objective: The objective of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of bruxism in children with nasal obstruction and to determine its association with other factors. Methods: Sixty children with nasal obstruction seen at the Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Clinic of the University Hospital. of Ribeirao Preto participated in the study. The data were obtained using a pre-established questionnaire applied to the person responsible and by orofacial evaluation of the patient. The participants were divided into two groups: group with bruxism (GB) as reported by the relatives and with the presence of tooth wear detected by clinical evaluation, and group without bruxism (GWB), consisting of children with none of the two symptoms of bruxism mentioned above. Results: The presence of bruxism exceeded its absence in the sample studied (65.22%). There was no significant difference (P < 0.05) between groups regarding gender, phase of dentition, presence of hearing diseases, degree of malocclusion, or child behavior. Conclusion: Bruxism and deleterious oral habits such as biting behavior (objects, tips and nails) were significantly present, together with the absence of suction habits, in the children with nasal obstruction. Parenthood is considered a major life role. Yet for people with a major mental illness, it is one that is fraught with difficulties and for which they receive the least support. Research on parenting and parenting programmes for people with a major mental illness is sparse and most of the papers presented do not provide a working model that can be easily replicated. This lack of support for parents or knowledge of working parenting programmes has often resulted in children being placed in care. Occupational therapists working in an Australian mental health service developed a two-stream programme which aimed to consolidate the parent/child relationship and enable the parents to develop effective parenting skills. This programme has a parents' educational stream and a stream with developmentally appropriate activities for the children. Observed outcomes have included the parents becoming more responsive to their children, increased treatment compliance, improved community access, and a decrease in the number of children in temporary foster care.

The choice of genotyping families vs unrelated individuals is a critical factor in any large-scale linkage disequilibrium (LD) study. The use of unrelated individuals for such studies is promising, but in contrast to family designs, unrelated samples do not facilitate detection of genotyping errors, which have been shown to be of great importance for LD and linkage studies and may be even more important in genotyping collaborations across laboratories. Here we employ some of the most commonly-used analysis methods to examine the relative accuracy of haplotype estimation using families vs unrelateds in the presence of genotyping error. The results suggest that even slight amounts of genotyping error can significantly decrease haplotype frequency and reconstruction accuracy, that the ability to detect such errors in large families is essential when the number/complexity of haplotypes is high (low LD/common alleles). In contrast, in situations of low haplotype complexity (high LD and/or many rare alleles) unrelated individuals offer such a high degree of accuracy that there is little reason for less efficient family designs. Moreover, parent-child trios, which comprise the most popular family design and the most efficient in terms of the number of founder chromosomes per genotype but which contain little information for error detection, offer little or no gain over unrelated samples in nearly all cases, and thus do not seem a useful sampling compromise between unrelated individuals and large families. The implications of these results are discussed in the context of large-scale LD mapping projects such as the proposed genome-wide haplotype map.

A identificação e a avaliação de crianças com desenvolvimento atípico configuram um processo muito importante para subsidiar as estratégias de ensino voltadas para a promoção do potencial de aprendizagem. O interesse em relação ao prognóstico de crianças com deficiência tem impulsionado o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias e pesquisas relacionadas à avaliação, prevenção e intervenção. Nesse contexto, torna-se relevante verificar com instrumentos adequados indicadores linguísticos, cognitivos e comportamentais, para assim traçar metas a partir daquilo que as crianças podem aprender. Dessa forma, esta pesquisa teve por objetivo verificar se a avaliação assistida informatizada se apresenta como uma modalidade de diagnóstico mais prescritivo do desenvolvimento cognitivo, quando comparada à avaliação psicométrica, na aplicação em crianças com deficiência. Na modalidade assistida há ajuda do examinador para conduzir a criança a um melhor nível de desempenho cognitivo. Participaram 11 crianças que frequentam uma instituição de atendimento clínico, em saúde, para crianças com deficiência, na Grande Vitória. Na avaliação psicométrica foram utilizados a Escala de Maturidade Mental Colúmbia computadorizada – Colúmbiacomp e o Teste de Vocabulário por Imagens Peabody - TVIPcomp. Na avaliação assistida informatizada foram aplicadas três provas voltadas para as habilidades de classificação e raciocínio analógico: Exclusão de Objetos, Exclusão de Figuras Geométricas e Jogo de Analogia de Figuras, no ambiente informatizado SINDAPSI. Protocolos de registro de fatores afetivo-motivacionais e de operações cognitivas foram utilizados durante as tarefas assistidas. Na avaliação do comportamento, o Child Behavior Checklist – CBCL foi respondido pelas mães. Dados documentais e dos instrumentos foram submetidos à análise estatística descritiva para verificar o desempenho das crianças nas duas formas de avaliação informatizada (psicométrica e assistida). Nos testes psicométricos, 64% das crianças alcançaram índice “abaixo da média” no TVIPcomp, e 55% “médio-inferior” no Colúmbiacomp. Em relação ao perfil de desempenho cognitivo, na Prova de Exclusão de Objetos computadorizada 55% das crianças foram avaliadas como “não-mantenedoras”. Na Prova de Exclusão de Figuras Geométricas computadorizada 55% da amostra foi classificada no perfil “alto-escore”, e no Jogo de Analogias de Figuras computadorizado 45% apresentou o perfil “ganhador”. A amostra demonstrou níveis de dificuldade na realização dos testes,tanto na modalidade psicométrica quanto assistida. Contudo, o desempenho nos testes assistidos foi relativamente melhor, evidenciando que o grupo se beneficiou da mediação,implementada na fase de assistência, para melhorar as habilidades cognitivas. Além disso, a apresentação informatizada dos testes apresentou-se como fator motivador para a realização e persistência nas tarefas.
