Red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) forests have distinct tree-height zones, with tall trees fringing the ocean and shorter trees in interior stands. A long-term nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization experiment in Almirante Bay, Bocas del Toro Province, Panama has shown that tree-height zonation is primarily related to nutrient limitation. This experiment was used to test the effects of in-situ nutrient additions and tree zonation on mangrove sediments. The sediments underlying the experimental R. mangle trees were sampled and N2 fixation, 15N, chlorophyll a, percent N and P, and percent organic biomass were quantified. Both N and P additions significantly affected almost every parameter measured in both zones within this experiment. These results are likely to have implications for management since N and P inputs are predicted to increase throughout the tropics and subtropics worldwide.

Two Paleogene ocean islands are exposed in the Azuero Peninsula, west Panama, within sequences accreted in the early-Middle Eocene. A multidisciplinary approach involving litho-logic mapping, paleontological age determinations, and petrological study allows reconstruction of the stratigraphy and magmatic evolution of one of these intraplate oceanic volcanoes. From base to top, the volcano's structure comprises submarine basaltic lava flows locally interlayered with hemipelagic sediments, basaltic breccias, shallow-water limestones, and subaerial basaltic lava. Gabbros and basaltic dikes were emplaced along a rift zone of the island. Geochemical trends of basaltic lavas include decreased Mg# {[Mg/(Mg + Fe)] * 100} and, with time, increased incompatible element contents thought to be representative of many poorly documented intraplate volcanoes in the Pacific. Our results show that, in addition to deep drilling, the roots of oceanic islands can be explored through studies of accreted and subaerially exhumed oceanic sequences.

In this paper, we analyze the drivers of the housing markets in Panama City. To the best of our knowledge, no formal academic analysis has been documented on the Panamanian housing market. In this paper, we outline key unique characteristics of the market and provide a brief review of broader economic indicators and housing market literature. Using a unique dataset comprising property-level information over 2007–2014, we employ a hedonic modeling framework to analyze the impacts of certain amenities and drivers that may affect housing values. The results indicate several unique features of the Panamanian housing market.

In the early 1970s, Panama’s negotiations with the United States over the status of the Panama Canal ground to a standstill. General Omar Torrijos had rejected treaties left unratified by previous governments only to receive a less generous offer from the Nixon administration. Realizing that the talks were being ignored in Washington, the Panamanian government worked to internationalize the previously bilateral issue, creating and exploiting a high-profile forum: Extraordinary meetings of the UN Security Council in March 1973 held in Panama City. In those meetings, Panama isolated the United States in order to raise the issue’s profile and amplify the costs of leaving the matter unsettled. Using underutilized Panamanian sources, this article examines that meeting, the succeeding progress, and the effect of this early stage on the final negotiations several years later. The case also illustrates how, during the unsettled international environment of the 1970s, a small state utilized international organizations to obtain attention and support for its most important cause.
