Full Paper: The phase, behavior of A-B-random copolymer/C-homopolymer, blends with special interaction was studied by a. Monte, Carlo simulation in two dimensions. The interaction between I segment A and segment C was repulsive, whereas it was attractive between segment B and segment C. The simulation results showed that the blend became two large co-continuous phase domains at lower segment-B component compositions, indicating that the blend showed spinodal decomposition. With an increase of the segment-B component, the miscibility between the copolymer, and the polymer was gradually improved up to being miscible. In addition, it was found that segment B tended to move to the surface of the copolymer phase in the case of a lower component of segment B. On the other hand, if was observed that the average, end-to-end distances ((h) over bar) for both copolymer and polymer changed slowly with increasing segment-B component of the copolymer up to 40%, thereafter they increased considerably with increasing segment B component. Moreover, it was found that the (h) over bar of the copolymer was obviously shorter than that of the homopolymer for the segment-B composition, region from 0% to 80%. Finally, a, phase diagram showing I phase and - II phase regions under the condition of constant-temperature is presented.

Polyaniline (PANI), a member of the intrinsically conducting polymer (ICPs) family, was blended with polyamide-11 (polyco-aminoundecanoyle) in concentrated sulfuric acid. The above solution was used to spin conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers by wet-spinning technology. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to study the two-phase morphology of the conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers. The micrographs of the cross-section, the axial section and the surface of the monofilament demonstrated that the two blend components were incompatible. The morphology of PANI in the fibers was of fibrillar form, which was valuable for producing conducting channels. The electrical conductivity of the fibers was from 10(-6) to 10(-1) S/cm with the different PANI fraction and the percolation threshold was about 5 wt.%. By comparing the two blend systems of PANI/Polyamide-11 fibers and carbon black filled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers, it was shown that the morphology of the conductive component had an influence on electrical conductivity, The former had higher conductivity and lower percolation threshold than the latter. The morphology of films of isotactic polypropylene poly (3-dodecylthiophene) and iPP/P3DDT blend formed in electrostatic fields has been investigated by using scanning electron microscope. The experiment results show that the micro-crystal morphology of polymer films was strongly dependent on electrostatic fields. It was found that the effect of the electrostatic field led to the formation of dendrite crystals aligned in the field direction, and some branches of P3DDT ruptured. However, the micro-crystals in these films grew into spherulites without electrostatic field, and have no crystal orientation.

The micro-crystal morphology of the films of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) and iPP/P3DDT blend grown in different electrostatic environments has been investigated by using scanning electron microscope. The experimental results show that the micro-crystal morphology of polymer films was strongly dependent on electrostatic field. It was found that the micro-crystal morphology of the films of iPP, P3DDT and iPP/P3DDT blend grown in the electrostatic field was in the form of dendrite crystals, in which main stems were aligned in the field direction, and some branches of P3DDT were ruptured. However, the micro-crystals of the films of iPP, P3DDT and iPP/P3DDT blend have no crystal orientation in the absence of electrostatic field. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The energy transfer in a blend film of poly 3-(2-(5-chlorobenzotriazolo) ethyl) thiophene (PCSET) and polyvinylcarzole (PVK) was investigated. The UV-VIS and photoluminescence (PL) results suggest that the energy transfer from PVK to PCBET leads to the enhancement of PL emission of PCBET. The AFM and LMF results indicated that the domains of blend polymer film are of micro-meter size. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Polyaniline (PAn) was doped with phosphonic acid containing hydrophilic tails. The solubility of the doped PAn in water was controlled by changing the length of hydrophilic chain in the dopant. When poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with molecular weight M-w = 550 was used as the hydrophilic chain of the dopant, the doped PAn was entirely soluble in water. The film cast from aqueous solution showed good electrochemical redox reversibility, Aqueous solution blending of PAn with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 20 000) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 360 000) was achieved. Percolation threshold of the composite film was lower than 3 wt.%. Electrical conductivity of the composite film was in the range of 10(-1)-10(-5) S cm(-1), depending on molecular weight of the acid and the content of PAn in the composite. A novel engineering thermoplastic, phenolphthalein poly (ether-ether-sulfone) (PES-C) was blended with a commercial thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP), Vectra A950, up to 30 weight percent of TLCP. A rheometrics dynamic spectrometer (RDS-I) and a CEAST capillary rheometer, a rheoscope 1000 were employed to investigate the melt rheology and extrusion behaviour at both the low and high shearing rates. The morphologies of the blends under different shearing were observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and correlated to the observed rheology. The principal normal stress differences measured with cone-and-plate geometry give a temperature-independent correlation for both blend and PES-C when they are plotted against shear stress. But the extrudate swell of the blends showed a strong temperature dependence at each shear stress. The concentration dependence of extrudate swell shows a contrary behaviour to that of the inorganic filled system. A reasonable hypothesis based on the relaxation and disorientation of TLCP during flowing in the capillary and exiting was given to explain it. The melt fracture was checked after extrusion from capillary and was discussed.

The toughening effect of the content of a core-shell poly(butyl acrylate)/poly(methyl methacrylate) latex polymer (PBA-cs-PMMA) on the mechanical properties, morphology and compatibility of its blends with polycarbonate(PC), i.e., PC/PBA-cs-PMMa, was studied. The mechanical properties of the blends are strongly affected by varying the content of PBA-cs-PMMA in the blend. When the PBA-cs-PMMA content is only 5 wt.-%, the impact strength of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA is almost 19 times as high as that of pure PC, indicating that PBA-cs-PMMA is a very good impact modifier for PC. With increasing interphacial layer thickness and decreasing interphacial tension, the interphacial activity becomes more and more effective and, at the same time, miscibility increases too.

A super-tough polycarbonate (PC) blend was obtained by using epoxidized ethylene propylene diene (eEPDM) rubber as modifier. The notched Izod impact strength of PC/eEPDM (96/4) blend shows a great improvement, with a value about 25 times of that of pure PC. Finely and homogeneously dispersed rubber particles (0.2-0.8 mu m) in the PC matrix indicated good adhesion between the eEPDM rubber phase and the PC matrix. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Blends of a liquid crystalline thermotropic copolyester (LCP70) and an amorphous phenolphthalein based poly(ether-ketone)(PEK-C) with two viscosities were prepared by melt blending. The blends' morphology, rheological and mechanical properties were investigated by DSC, SEM, mechanical and rheological tests. It was observed that the optimum composition of the PEK-C/LCP70 blend was 10 wt% LCP for both mechanical and rheological properties. When the LCP content was less than 10%, the LCP phase existed as finely dispersed fibrous domains with a diameter of about 1 mu m in the matrix, and both tensile and flexural properties were improved. In contrast, when the LCP content reached 20% or more, the LCP domains coalesced to ellipsoidal particles with a diameter of about 5 mu m, and the mechanical properties decreased as a result. It is demonstrated that pure PEK-C with a high viscosity which was difficult to process by melt extrusion, could be extruded conveniently when 10% LCP70 was incorporated. It is emphasized that LCP not only can be used as a reinforcing phase but also an effective processing agent for engineering thermoplastics, especially for those with high viscosity and narrow processing window. Poly(ether ether ketone)/poly(ether diphenyl ether ketone) blend containing 30 wt% PEDEK was used to investigate the melting behaviour of immiscible PEEK/PEDEK blends. The results measured from differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) showed that immiscible PEEK/PEDEK blends isothermally crystallized at a temperature between Tg and Tm-2 (PEEK's normal melting point) from the glassy state also exhibited the multi-melting behaviour like poly(aryl ether ketones) homopolymers. In addition, the low-temperature melting peak was independent of composition of poly(aryl ether ketones) blends and only associated with the thermal history. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

An effort has been made to modify the mechanical behaviour of our previously reported gel-type gamma-radiation crosslinked polyethylene oxide (PEO)-LiClO4 polymer electrolyte. A highly polar and gamma-radiation crosslinkable crystalline polymer, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), was selected to blend with PEO and then subjected to gamma-irradiation in order to make an simultaneous interpenetrating network (SIN), which was used as a polymer host to impart stiffness to the plasticized system. Experimental results have shown that the presence of PVDF in the system, through gamma-radiation induced SIN formation, could not only give a rather high mechanical modulus of 10(7) Pa at ambient temperature, but also maintain the room temperature ionic conductivity at a high level (greater than 10(-4) S/cm). DSC, DMA and conductivity measurement techniques were used to examine the effects of blending, gamma-irradiation and plasticization on the variations of glass transition and melting endotherm, on the appearance of high elastic plateau and on the temperature dependence of ionic conductivity: In addition, it was found that, in contrast with the unplasticized system, the ionic conductivity mechanism of this gel-type electrolyte seems to conform to the Arrhenius model, suggesting that, as a result of the high degree of plasticization, the polymer chains act mainly as the skeleton of the networks or polymer cages to immobilize the liquid electrolyte solution, whereas the ionic species migrate as if they were in a liquid medium. This work deals with the effect of compatibilizer on the morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of polypropylene/polycarbonate (PP/ PC) blends. The blends, containing between 0 to 30 vol % of polycarbonate and a compatibilizer, were prepared by means of a twin-screw extruder. The compatibilizer was produced by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene in the molten state. Blend morphologies were controlled by adding PP-g-GMA as compatibilizer during melt processing, thus changing dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the polycarbonate phase. With PP-g-GMA, volume fractions increased from 2.5 to 20, and much finer dispersions of discrete polycarbonate phase with average domain sizes decreased from 35 to 3 mu m were obtained. The WAXD spectra showed that the crystal structure of neat PP was different from that in blends. The DSC results suggested that the degree of crystallization of PP in blends decreased as PC content and compatibilizer increased. The mechanical properties significantly changed after addition of PP-g-GMA. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The effect of physical aging at 210 degrees C on the mechanical properties of phenolphthalein polyether sulfone (PES-C) and a PES-C/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) blend, with 5% content of PPS, were studied using DMA, tensile experiments, an instrumented impact tester, and SEM observations. The blend shows good mechanical properties in comparison with the corresponding PES-C. The mechanical properties of both materials exhibit characteristics of physical aging, with only the aging rate of the blend relatively slower, which should be attributed to the constraint effect of PPS particles and the good interfacial adhesion. The morphology of the PPS phase in the blend did not change with aging time. The principal role of PPS particles is to induce crazes, which dissipate energy, under applied loading; thus, the blend shows good toughness. On the other hand, the multiple crazing mechanism depends on the molecular mobility or structural state of the matrix. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The aim of this work is to describe the most recent achievements in the field of the physical chemistry of mixing. The systems studied have been classified according to the amount of thermic effect due to the blending and its interpretation. When polystyrene (PS) and poly(alpha-methylstyrene) (P alpha MS) are blended, the interaction is weak and Delta(mix)H is close to zero. The presence of polar atoms and/or groups increases the stability of the blend and, therefore, Delta(mix)H becomes more negative. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(vinylacetate) (PVAc), when mixed to form binary systems, show large differences from their properties when pure. If hydrogen bonding takes place, the interactions are readily detected and a large effect is calorimetrically determined. Cellulose diacetate (CDA) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) have been studied as an example of a strongly interacting system.
