Our growing understanding of human mind and cognition and the development of neurotechnology has triggered debate around cognitive enhancement in neuroethics. The dissertation examines the normative issues of memory enhancement, and focuses on two issues: (1) the distinction between memory treatment and enhancement; and (2) how the issue of authenticity concerns memory interventions, including memory treatments and enhancements. rnThe first part consists of a conceptual analysis of the concepts required for normative considerations. First, the representational nature and the function of memory are discussed. Memory is regarded as a special form of self-representation resulting from a constructive processes. Next, the concepts of selfhood, personhood, and identity are examined and a conceptual tool—the autobiographical self-model (ASM)—is introduced. An ASM is a collection of mental representations of the system’s relations with its past and potential future states. Third, the debate between objectivist and constructivist views of health are considered. I argue for a phenomenological account of health, which is based on the primacy of illness and negative utilitarianism.rnThe second part presents a synthesis of the relevant normative issues based on the conceptual tools developed. I argue that memory enhancement can be distinguished from memory treatment using a demarcation regarding the existence of memory-related suffering. That is, memory enhancements are, under standard circumstances and without any unwilling suffering or potential suffering resulting from the alteration of memory functions, interventions that aim to manipulate memory function based on the self-interests of the individual. I then consider the issue of authenticity, namely whether memory intervention or enhancement endangers “one’s true self”. By analyzing two conceptions of authenticity—authenticity as self-discovery and authenticity as self-creation, I propose that authenticity should be understood in terms of the satisfaction of the functional constraints of an ASM—synchronic coherence, diachronic coherence, and global veridicality. This framework provides clearer criteria for considering the relevant concerns and allows us to examine the moral values of authenticity. rn

Elaborato che si propone di evidenziare come i veicoli a benzina e a diesel possano soddisfare la normativa Euro 6. Si analizza il funzionamento dei principali sistemi di after-treatment come: catalizzatore SCR e DeNOx, trappola LNT, filtri FAP e DPF, sistemi EGR, per i motori ad accensione per compressione e catalizzatore TWC per motori ad accensione comandata. Parallelamente, si spiega l'evoluzione della normativa da Euro 6b a Euro 6c in termini di riduzione del numero di particelle di particolato emesse per km e come rispondere a queste più restrittive condizioni; viene introdotto, in via ancora sperimentale, il filtro antiparticolato GPF e un sistema di misurazione di nano particelle di dimensioni inferiori a 23 nm cioè una rivalutazione del metodo PMP. Contestualmente si definisce il progetto CARS 2020, il quale aggiunge una limitazione anche sulla quantità di anidride carbonica emessa a 95 g/km e le eventuali possibili soluzioni per rispettarla: da un maggior uso di combustibili alternativi a miglioramenti tecnologici dei motori stessi. Infine si studiano gli sviluppi dei cicli di omologazione, dal 2017 infatti entreranno in gioco test su strada con dispositivi PEMS on-board e cicli armonizzati WLTC. Le procedure RDE e WLTP permetteranno di testare i vecioli in maniera più reale e globale, rispettivamente, riuscendo a fornire anche valori attendibili dei consumi registrati durante le prove.

Assessments of spinal nociceptive withdrawal reflexes can be used in human research both to evaluate the effect of analgesics and explore pain mechanisms related to sensitization. Before the reflex can be used as a clinical tool, normative values need to be determined in large scale studies. The aim of this study was to determine the reference values of spinal nociceptive reflexes and subjective pain thresholds (to single and repeated stimulation), and of the area of the reflex receptive fields (RRF) in 300 pain-free volunteers. The influences of gender, age, height, weight, body-mass index (BMI), body side of testing, depression, anxiety, catastrophizing and parameters of Short-Form 36 (SF-36) were analyzed by multiple regressions. The 95% confidence intervals were determined for all the tests as normative values. Age had a statistically and quantitatively significant impact on the subjective pain threshold to single stimuli. The reflex threshold to single stimulus was lower on the dominant compared to the non-dominant side. Depression had a negative impact on the subjective pain threshold to single stimuli. All the other analyses either did not reveal statistical significance or displayed quantitatively insignificant correlations. In conclusion, normative values of parameters related to the spinal nociceptive reflex were determined. This allows their clinical application for assessing central hyperexcitability in individual patients. The parameters investigated explore different aspects of sensitization processes that are largely independent of demographic characteristics, cognitive and affective factors.

Zeit ist in der öffentlichen Diskussion über Erziehung eine konstitu tive Bestimmung. Dabei wird sie sehr unterschiedlich gefasst: Erziehung wird verstanden als ein Prozess, der zeitlich konsekutiv geordnet werden muss. Es wird aber auch von einer Erziehungszeit der Eltern gesprochen und von der Schulzeit im Lebenslauf. Unterricht und Didaktik verlangen von den Lehrpersonen ein Zeitmanagement. Über Schulanfang, Schul ende und Dauer der Schulzeit wird politisch debattiert. Aber weit dar über hinaus werden Erziehung und Bildung selbst zum Instrument, mit dem in der Gegenwart die Zukunft, die Zeit des einzelnen Menschen und sogar der ganzen Gesellschaft berechenbar werden sollen. Trotz dieser Zentralität der Dimension «Zeit» ist die theoretische Diskussion darüber wenig entwickelt. Der vorliegende Band diskutiert aus soziologischen, pädagogisch-psychologischen und historischen Perspektiven die Zeit dimensionen von Erziehung.

Despite association with lung growth and long-term respiratory morbidity, there is a lack of normative lung function data for unsedated infants conforming to latest European Respiratory Society/American Thoracic Society standards. Lung function was measured using an ultrasonic flow meter in 342 unsedated, healthy, term-born infants at a mean ± sd age of 5.1 ± 0.8 weeks during natural sleep according to the latest standards. Tidal breathing flow-volume loops (TBFVL) and exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) measurements were obtained from 100 regular breaths. We aimed for three acceptable measurements for multiple-breath washout and 5-10 acceptable interruption resistance (R(int)) measurements. Acceptable measurements were obtained in ≤ 285 infants with high variability. Mean values were 7.48 mL·kg⁻¹ (95% limits of agreement 4.95-10.0 mL·kg⁻¹) for tidal volume, 14.3 ppb (2.6-26.1 ppb) for eNO, 23.9 mL·kg⁻¹ (16.0-31.8 mL·kg⁻¹) for functional residual capacity, 6.75 (5.63-7.87) for lung clearance index and 3.78 kPa·s·L⁻¹ (1.14-6.42 kPa·s·L⁻¹) for R(int). In males, TBFVL outcomes were associated with anthropometric parameters and in females, with maternal smoking during pregnancy, maternal asthma and Caesarean section. This large normative data set in unsedated infants offers reference values for future research and particularly for studies where sedation may put infants at risk. Furthermore, it highlights the impact of maternal and environmental risk factors on neonatal lung function.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often persists into adulthood. Instruments for diagnosing ADHD in childhood are well validated and reliable, but diagnosis of ADHD in adults remains problematic. Attempts have been made to develop criteria specific for adult ADHD, resulting in the development of self-report and observer-rated questionnaires. To date, the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS) are the international standard for questionnaire assessment of ADHD. The current study evaluates a German version of the CAARS self-report (CAARS-S).
