Misael Acosta Solís y el conservacionismo en el Ecuador (1936-1953)

Entre las décadas de 1930 y 1950 Misael Acosta Solís, miembro de la elite económica serrana y destacado geobotánico y forestal, lideró un proceso de institucionalización del conservacionismo en el Ecuador. Instituciones privadas y gubernamentales de corte conservacionista, exposiciones, libros y artículos, revistas científicas, estaciones de investigación forestal y agroecológica, leyes y políticas, congresos y encuentros, fueron algunos de sus legados. En este trabajo se revisan esos hechos en el contexto de la historia económica, social y ambiental del Ecuador. Asimismo, se sientan algunas premisas sobre las cuales continuar la construcción de la historia ambiental de esa nación.

"La paradisíaca estabilidad de la anteguerra". Elaboración de un índice de precios de consumo de España, 1830-1936.

Este artículo expone los aspectos básicos de la elaboración un nuevo, y auténtico, Índice de Precios de Consumo de España para el período 1830-1936. Los distintos apartados en que está organizado se dedican a definir el campo de observación y el ámbito analizados, las fuentes empleadas y la metodología utilizada, así como las similitudes y diferencias con otros índices actualmente disponibles. Contiene, asimismo, un contiene un primer y breve análisis de los resultados. La característica más sobresaliente desde la perspectiva de las tendencias de largo plazo del nuevo IPC es una gran estabilidad, quebrada de forma importante, tan sólo, durante los años 1914-1920 bajo la influencia de la Primera Guerra Mundial. La tasa de crecimiento para el conjunto del período no alcanzó siquiera el uno por cien anual, pese al cambio de nivel registrado en aquel breve brote inflacionista.

La Olimpiada Popular de 1936: deporte y política

Las complejas relaciones entre política y deporte y, más concretamente aún, entre deporte y pulsión nacionalista, son exploradas por el autor a la luz de la Olimpíada Popular de 1936, organizada –y finalmente no celebrada– en la Barcelona inmediatamente anterior al golpe de Estado del 18 de julio como réplica y alternativa a los Juegos Olímpicos que aquel verano se celebraron en Berlín, entonces capital del incipiente Tercer Reich.

First report of Mazocroeoides georgei price, 1936 and Mazocraeoides opisthonema Hargis, 1955 in Brazil with new synonysms (Monogenea, Mazocraeidae)

Mazocraeoides georgei price, 1936 and mazocraeoides opisthonema Hargis, 1955 are reported for the first time in Brazil in Brevoortia aurea (Spix, 1829) and in Harengula clupeola (Cuvier, 1829) respectively, clupeid fishes from the littoral of Rio de janeiro State, which represent new host records. Mazocraeoides olentangiensis Sroufe, 1958 and mazocraeoides hargisi Price, 1961 are considered new synonyms for Mazocraeoides georgei.

Ciencia, industria e ideología en la Cataluña del siglo XX: el Instituto Ravetllat-Pla en Sudamérica entre 1924 y 1936

En 1923, Ramón Plá i Armengol (1880-1958) fundó el Instituto Ravetllat-Pla para la comercialización y producción de dos productos antituberculosos (Hemo-Antitoxina y Suero Ravetllat-Pla) fundamentados en una teoría heterodoxa postulada por el veterinario Joaquim Ravetllat i Estech (1871-1923). A través del instituto creó una gran red internacional científico-comercial principalmente en Latinoamérica. Plá i Armengol fue doctor en medicina y participó activamente en la lucha antituberculosa en Cataluña sin dejar de lado su militancia socialista. A través de estos dos productos, logró crear un mercado que se sustentaba en una teoría heterodoxa que integraban sus principios e ideología.

La Suisse en crise (1929-1936) : les politiques monétaire, financière, économique et sociale de la Confédération helvétique

La crise économique et financière des années 1930 a profondément marqué la Suisse. Les exportations s'effondrent. Une des huit grandes banques du pays fait faillite. En hiver 1935, plus de 8% de la population active est touchée par le chômage. La pauvreté frappe près d'un habitant sur cinq. Contrairement à la plupart des pays, la Suisse ne change pas de politique monétaire jusqu'en septembre 1936. La politique du franc fort constitue pour les dirigeants helvétiques l'épine dorsale de leur politique de crise. La politique financière fédérale traduit le souci de la majorité bourgeoise de défendre l'équilibre budgétaire coûte que coûte et d'imposer les charges de la crise sur la majorité populaire. Enfin, les interventions de l'État dans l'économie illustrent la sélectivité de l'action fédérale. D'un côté, on retrouve une injection massive d'argent public, par exemple dans les sauvetages bancaires; de l'autre côté, la politique de lutte contre le chômage reste rachitique et discriminatoire. Quant au combat contre la pauvreté, il est inexistant. Les politiques de crise poursuivies par la Confédération sont principalement orientées en fonction des intérêts des dirigeants de l'industrie d'exportation et de la place financière. Le présent ouvrage vise à mettre en évidence ces politiques et à en discuter les fondements.

La formación de un humanista. Juan Ramón Masoliver (1910-1936)

Juan Ramón Masoliver perteneció a una generación privilegiada en cuanto a su formación. Promovió la revista Hèlix, altavoz del surrealismo en Catalunya, y estuvo en contacto con el núcleo surrealista francés. Conoció a James Joyce y Ezra Pound, dos intelectuales claves para su formación y su desarrollo cultural posterior. También en esta época entró en contacto con corrientes de pensamiento cercanas al fascismo. Con todas sus experiencias construyó un excéntrico personaje que, en su madurez, contaría con la simpatía de numerosos intelectuales.

Strindberg a Barcelona (1903-1936)

Recepció del teatre d’August Strindberg (1849-1912) a Barcelona tant de la representació de les seves obres com de la publicació dels seus textos des de la darrera dècada del segle XIX fins a l’esclat de la Guerra Civil. El treball s’estructura en dues parts clarament diferenciades i desiguals quant a l’extensió. En la primera part, s’ofereix una aproximació sumària a l’obra de Strindberg en el marc del teatre europeu, a cavall del Naturalisme i la seva possible identificació com a precedent de l’Expressionisme sorgit a Alemanya en el període d’entreguerres. En aquest bloc es realitza també un recorregut per l’obra dramàtica de l’autor suec, tot destacant-ne algunes de les seves aportacions més significatives. El gruix de la investigació es concentra en la segona part sobre la recepció de Strindberg a Barcelona. Es tracta de plantejar-se si les obres de Strindberg van ser representades amb certa regularitat a la capital catalana entre finals del XIX i el primer terç de segle XX.

Origins and efficiency of the electric industry regulation in Spain, 1910-1936

The aim of this paper is to discover the origins of utility regulation in Spain, and to analyse, from a microeconomic perspective, its characteristics and the impact of regulation on consumers and utilities. Madrid and the Madrilenian utilities are taken as a case study. The electric industry in the period studied was a natural monopoly2. Each of the three phases of production, generation, transmission and distribution, had natural monopoly characteristics. Therefore, the most efficient form to generate, transmit and distribute electricity was the monopoly because one firm can produce a quantity at a lower cost than the sum of costs incurred by two or more firms. A problem arises because when a firm is the single provider it can charge prices above the marginal cost, at monopoly prices. When a monopolist reduces the quantity produced, price increases, causing the consumer to demand less than the economic efficiency level, incurring a loss of consumer surplus. The loss of the consumer surplus is not completely gained by the monopolist, causing a loss of social surplus, a deadweight loss. The main objective of regulation is going to be to reduce to a minimum the deadweight loss. Regulation is also needed because when the monopolist fixes prices at marginal cost equal marginal revenue there would be an incentive for firms to enter the market creating inefficiency. The Madrilenian industry has been chosen because of the availability of statistical information on costs and production. The complex industry structure and the atomised demand add interest to the analysis. This study will also provide some light on the tariff regulation of the period which has been poorly studied and will complement the literature on the US electric utilities regulation where a different type of regulation was implemented.

Health intervention and decline in infant mortality rates. Milk depots in Spain (1900-1936)

The role of public health has been a central topic on the classical debate about the historical mortality decline in Europe. One of these health initiatives were the Milk Depots. Spain set up those centres from the late 19th century until the beginning of the Civil War. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the effect of this health intervention on the infant mortality decline during this period. This study works out three kinds of sources: Statistical Yearbooks, Official documents and local records produced by the same Milk Depot. It analyses data available for all the country and one local case such as the Barcelona’s Milk Depot (1904-1935). The main methodological issue deals with the measurement of the effect of the Milk Depot activities on the pattern of changes of infant mortality. Results suggest that Milk Depots have a positive but quite moderate effect on the improving of overall levels of child survival.

Re-descriptions of Isospora ameivae Carini, 1932 in the Teiid Lizard Ameiva ameiva and Isospora hemidactyli Carini, 1936 in the Gecko Hemidactylus mabouia, with Particular Reference to their Endogenous Stages

Redescriptions are given of the mature oocysts of Isospora ameivae Carini, 1932, from the teiid lizard Ameiva ameiva, and Isospora hemidactyli Carini,1936 from the gecko Hemidactylus mabouia, in north Brazil. The endogenous stages of the two parasites in the small intestine are described. Those of I. ameivae are intracytoplasmic, whereas those of I. hemidactyli are intranuclear.

The fine structure of the endogenous stages of Isospora hemidactyli carini, 1936 in the gecko Hemidactylus mabouia from North Brazil

The ultrastructure is described of the meronts, microgamonts and young oocyst stages of Isospora hemidactyli of the gecko Hemidactylus mabouia from Belém, PA, north Brazil. The endogenous stages all develop in the nucleus of the gut epithelial cells. The nucleus remains intact up to the latest stages of the parasite's development, but degenerates by the time the oocyst appears. Merogonic division appears to be asynchronous, and some of the differentiated merozoites contained more than one nucleus. Microgamonts conform in structure with those of other eimeriids. Some of the type 2 wall-forming bodies disintegrate into smaller globules and ground substance of lower density.

Quelle cohérence entre le Dieu fracassant de l'Exode et le Dieu crucifié de l'apôtre Paul ? Le Dieu de l'entrée en Canaan ressemble-t-il vraiment à l'Agneau immolé de l'Apocalypse ? Mais déjà, au sein de la Bible hébraïque, les trompettes de Jéricho côtoient le Serviteur souffrant d'Isaïe. Comment comprendre aujourd'hui cette diversité de la présence de Dieu dans la Bible, si ce n'est par la diversité des regards d'exégètes dont la lecture croisée des textes bibliques nous invite à renouveler notre compréhension de Dieu ?

Characteristics of the bological cycle of Lutzomyia evandroi Costa Lima & Antunes, 1936 (Diptera: Psychodidae) under experimental conditions

Lutzomyia evandroi Costa Lima and Antunes, 1936 is found in Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern Brazil, in areas of visceral and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis and follows the same geographic distribution of L. longipalpis. The biological cycle, oviposition, morphological and behavioral characteristics of the species were studied under experimental conditions. The average number of eggs per wild caught female varied from 21 to 50 eggs along the year, with a peak occurring between January and March and another in August, with oviposition lasting for 4 to 12 days. The mean larval phase was 24 days. Ovipositing rates were influenced by rainfall and temperature indexes, with an increase of eggs per oviposition at the beginning and at the end of the rainy season, and a decrease at the peak of the rainy season.
