The structures of intermediates formed in propylene polymerisation using neutral salicyladiminato palladium(II) and nickel(II) complexes as catalysts have been investigated using density functional theory. Calculations show that all low energy intermediates contain agostic interactions either between the metal and a hydrogen from the added propylene forming four- or five-membered chelate rings, or, when a phenyl ring is present, between the metal and an aromatic C-C bond. The agostic interactions with the metal are concomitant with changes in ligand dimensions and electronic properties. In particular when a metal to hydrogen bond is formed, there is a lengthening of the C-H bond. Significant differences are found for the agostic interactions with palladium and nickel in that for Pd there is a clear preference for specific intermediates but for Ni there are several different structures with similar energies which are likely to lead to a greater variety of products on further polymerisation. A series of porphyrins substituted in one or two meso-positions by diphenylphosphine oxide groups has been prepared by the palladium catalysed reaction of diphenylphosphine or its oxide with the corresponding bromoporphyrins. Compounds {MDPP-[P(O)Ph2]n} (M = H2, Ni, Zn; H2DPP = 5,15-diphenylporphyrin; n = 1, 2) were isolated in yields of 60-95%. The reaction is believed to proceed via the conventional oxidative addition, phosphination and reductive elimination steps, as the stoichiometric reaction of η1-palladio(II) porphyrin [PdBr(H2DPP)(dppe)] (H2DPP = 5,15-diphenylporphyrin; dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) with diphenylphosphine oxide also results in the desired mono-porphyrinylphosphine oxide [H2DPP-P(O)Ph2]. Attempts to isolate the tertiary phosphines failed due to their extreme air-sensitivity. Variable temperature 1H NMR studies of [H2DPP-P(O)Ph2] revealed an intrinsic lack of symmetry, while fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the phosphine oxide group does not behave as a "heavy atom" quencher. The electron withdrawing effect of the phosphine oxide group was confirmed by voltammetry. The ligands were characterised by multinuclear NMR and UV-visible spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry. Single crystal X-ray crystallography showed that the bis(phosphine oxide) nickel(II) complex {[NiDPP-[P(O)Ph2]2} is monomeric in the solid state, with a ruffled porphyrin core and the two P=O fragments on the same side of the average plane of the molecule. On the other hand, the corresponding zinc(II) complex formed infinite chains through coordination of one Ph2PO substituent to the neighbouring zinc porphyrin through an almost linear P=O---Zn unit, leaving the other Ph2PO group facing into a parallel channel filled with disordered water molecules. These new phosphine oxides are attractive ligands for supramolecular porphyrin chemistry.

A new dinuclear nickel(II) complex, [Ni-2(LH2)(H2O)(2)(OH)(NO3)](NO3)(3) (1), of an ``end-off'' compartmental ligand 2,6-bis(N-ethylpiperazine-iminomethyl)-4-methyl-phenolato, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The X-ray single crystal structure analysis shows that the piperazine moieties assume the expected chair conformation and are protonated. The complex 1 exhibits versatile catalytic activities of biological significance, viz. catecholase, phosphatase, and DNA cleavage activities, etc. The catecholase activity of the complex observed is very dependent on the nature of the solvent. In acetonitrile medium, the complex is inactive to exhibit catecholase activity. On the other hand, in methanol, it catalyzes not only the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) but also tetrachlorocatechol (TCC), a catechol which is very difficult to oxidize, under aerobic conditions. UV vis spectroscopic investigation shows that TCC oxidation proceeds through the formation of an intermediate. The intermediate has been characterized by an electron spray ionizaton-mass spectrometry study, which suggests a bidentate rather than a monodentate mode of TCC coordination in that intermediate, and this proposition have been verified by density functional theory calculation. The complex also exhibits phosphatase (with substrate p-nitrophenylphosphate) and DNA cleavage activities. The DNA cleavage activity exhibited by complex 1 most probably proceeds through a hydroxyl radical pathway. The bioactivity study suggests the possible applications of complex 1 as a site specific recognition of DNA and/or as an anticancer agent.

The synthesis of manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes of a new ligand 2-thiophene-2-yl-3(thiophene-2-carboxylidene-amino)-1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one (TTCADQ) is described. The ligand and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurements, spectral (u.v.-vis., i.r., 1D n.m.r., 2D hetcor and e.p.r.) and thermal studies. The formation of 1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one rather than hydrazone, in the reaction of aromatic aldehyde and o-aminobenzoylhydrazide is proved by single crystal X-ray diffraction and 2D hetcor n.m.r. studies. On the basis of elemental analysis, u.v.-vis.spectroscopy and magnetic moment studies, six coordinate geometry for all the complexes was proposed. The i.r. spectral studies reveal the bidentate behaviour of the ligand.

The coordinating behavior of a new dihydrazone ligand, 2,6-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine towards manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) has been described. The metal complexes were characterized by magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral (IR, NMR, UV-Vis, FAB-Mass and EPR) and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P-1, with alpha=98.491(10)degrees, beta=110.820(10)degrees and gamma=92.228(10)degrees. The cell dimensions are a=10.196(7)angstrom, b=10.814(7)angstrom, c=10.017(7)angstrom, Z=2 and V=1117.4(12). IR spectral studies reveal the nonadentate behavior of the ligand. All the complexes are neutral in nature and possess six-coordinate geometry around each metal center. The X-band EPR spectra of copper(II) complex at both room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature showed unresolved broad signals with g(iso) = 2.106. Cyclic voltametric studies of copper(II) complex at different scan rates reveal that all the reaction occurring are irreversible. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two kinds of nickel(II) and copper(II) P-diketone complexes derived from thenoyltrifluoroacetone ligand with blue-violet light absorption were synthesized by reacting free ligand and different metal(II) ions in sodium methoxide solution. Their structures were postulated based on elemental analysis, ESI-MS, FT-IR spectra and UV-vis electronic absorption spectra. Smooth films on K9 glass substrates were prepared using the spin-coating method. Their solubility in organic solvents, absorption properties of thin film and thermal stability of these complexes were evaluated. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of nickel(II) complexes bearing two nonsymmetric bidentate beta-ketoiminato chelate ligands have been prepared, and the structures of complexes [(2,6-Me2C6H3)NC(CH3)C(H)C(Ph)O](2)Ni (4a) and [(2,6-Me2C6H3)NC(CH3)C(H)C(CF3)O](2)Ni (4c) have been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These nickel(II) complexes were investigated as catalysts for the vinylic polymerization of norbornene. Using modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes display very high activities and produce high molecular weight polymers. Catalytic activity of up to 1.16 x 10(4) kg/mol(Ni) .h and the viscosity-average molecular 9 weight of polymer of up to 870 kg/mol were observed. Catalyst activity, polymer yield, and polymer molecular weight could be controlled over a wide range by the variation of the reaction parameters such as Al/Ni molar ratio, norbornene/catalyst molar ratio, monomer concentration, polymerization reaction temperature and time.

A series of neutral nickel complexes [Ni(Ph)(PPh3)(N, O)] with Schiff-base ligands (N, O) [N, O = 5-Me-3-tert-Bu-(Ar-N=CH)C6H2O (1, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 2, Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3)], [Ni(Ph)(PPh3)(N,O)1, with beta-ketiminato ligands (N, O) [N, O = CH3COCHC=(CH3)N-Ar (3, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 4, Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3)] and [Ni(N, N)(PPh3)], and with beta-diketiminato ligands (N, N) [5, N, N = [2,6-i-Pr-2(C6H3)N=C(CH3)](2)CH] have been synthesized and characterized. The molecular structures of complexes 1, 4, and 5 have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. Although their ligands have similar structures, complex 4 possesses a structure similar to that of four-coordination nickel with complex 1, while complex 5 reveals a rare three-coordination nickel geometry. These compounds show high catalytic activities of up to 3.16 x 10(7) g PNB mol(-1) Ni h(-1) for the addition polymerization of norbornene in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as cocatalyst. Catalytic activities, polymer yield, molecular weights, and molecular weight distributions of polyborbornene have been investigated under various reaction conditions.

A series of binuclear neutral nickel and palladium complexes [(XC6H2CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))MRL](2) 4b-f (X=NO2, M=Ni, R=Ph, L=PPh3, 4b; X=H, M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3,4c; X=H,M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 4d; X=NO2,M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3, 4e; X=NO2, M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 4f) and [(C10H7CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))MRL](2) 8a-c (M=Ni, R=Ph, L=PPh3, 8a; M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3, 8b; M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 8c) have been synthesized and characterized. The structures of complexes 4e and 8b have also been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. With modified methylalummoxane (MMAO) as cocatalysts, these complexes and complex [(C6H3CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))NiPh(PPh3)](2) 4a are capable of catalyzing the addition polymerization of norbomene (NBE) with the high activity up to 2.3 x 10(8) g PNBE/(mol(M) h). The structure of complexes affects considerably catalytic activity towards norbomene polymerization. The polymers obtained with nickel complexes are soluble, while those obtained with palladium complexes are insoluble. Palladium complexes 4c, 4e and 8b bearing PPh3 ligands exhibit much higher activities than the corresponding complexes 4d, M and 8c bearing pyridine ligands under the same conditions.

An asymmetrical double Schiff-base Cu(II) mononuclear complex, HCuLp (H(3)Lp is N-3-carboxylsalicylidene-N'-5-chlorosalicylaldehyde-1,3-diaminopropane) and a heterometal trinuclear complex with double molecular structure (CuLp)(2)Co center dot 5H(2)O have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analyses, IR and electronic spectra. The crystal structure of the heterotrinucler complex was determined by X-ray analysis. Each asymmetric unit within the unit cell of the complex contains two heterotrinuclear neutral molecules (a) [CuLpCoCuLp], (b) [(CuLpH(2)O) CoCuLp] and four uncoordinated water molecules. In the two neutral molecules, the central Co2+ ions are located at the site of O-6 with a distorted octahedral geometry, one terminal Cu2+ ion (Cu(3)) at the square-pyramidal environment of N2O3, and the other three at the square planar coordination geometry with N2O2 donor atoms. Magnetic properties of the heterotrinucler complex have been determined in the temperature range 5-300 K, indicating that the interaction between the central Co2+ ion and the outer Co2+ ions is antiferromagnetic.

Two new complexes, [MII(L)(Cl)(H2O)2]·H2O (where M=Ni or Ru and L = heterocyclic Schiff base, 3- hydroxyquinoxaline-2-carboxalidene-4-aminoantipyrine), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, FAB-MASS, TG–DTA, AAS, cyclic voltammetry, conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The complexes have a distorted octahedral structure andwere found to be effective catalysts for the hydrogenation of benzene. The influence of several reaction parameters such as reaction time, temperature, hydrogen pressure, concentration of the catalyst and concentration of benzenewas tested. A turnover frequency of 5372 h−1 has been found in the case of ruthenium complex for the reduction of benzene at 80 ◦C with 3.64×10−6 mol catalyst, 0.34 mol benzene and at a hydrogen pressure of 50 bar. In the case of the nickel complex, a turnover frequency of 1718 h−1 has been found for the same reaction with 3.95×10−6 mol catalyst under similar experimental conditions. The nickel complex shows more selectivity for the formation of cyclohexene while the ruthenium complex is more selective for the formation of cyclohexane
