Oropharyngeal candidiasis is the most common fungal infection among HIV-positive patients. This condition can be treated with either systemic or topical antifungal agents; treatments are usually indicated empirically on the basis of clinical data. The knowledge of in vitro antifungal susceptibility is important to determine correct therapeutic guides for the treatment of fungal infections. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the antifungal susceptibility profile of oral Candida isolates from HIV-positive patients and control individuals. Amphotericin B, fluconazole, flucytosine, nystatin and ketoconazole were tested according to the methodology of microdilution proposed by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI); results were recorded in values of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). A total of 71 Candida isolates from HIV-positive patients were examined with the following species represented: C. albicans (59), C. tropicalis (9), C. glabrata (1), C. guilliermondii (1) and C. krusei (1). A total of 15 Candida isolates were evaluated from control individuals comprised of 11 C. albicans and 4 C. tropicalis samples. Our results demonstrated that the tested antifungal agents showed good activity for most isolates from both groups; however, variability in MIC values among isolates was observed.

A associação tiletamina-zolazepam produziu apnéia transitória e manteve estável a FC, PAM e DC.

The antimicrobial susceptibility of danofloxacin was compared in vitro with ciprofloxacin against mastitogenic Staphylococcus aureus. Danofloxacin was more active than ciprofloxacin, showing minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC90), minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC90) and MBC/MIC ratio lower than those of ciprofloxacin. Ciprofloxacin-resistant mutants occurred at higher frequencies (greater than or equal to 10(-6)) than for danofloxacin (10(-9)).

3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide (TCC) was rested as a new method of bacterial growth control for S. cerevisiae alcoholic fermentations of diluted high test molasses (HTM). Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was tested to determine the necessary concentration of TCC to control bacterial growth. The fed-batch alcoholic fermentation process was used with cell recycle similar to industrial conditions and Lactobacillus fermentum CCT 1407 was mixed in the first inoculum to grow with the yeast. Yeast extract was added into the must to stimulate bacterial growth. The best results of TCC's MIC to bacterial growth of Lactobacillus fermentum and Leuconostoc mesenteroides (< 0.125-1.0 mu g/ml) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (16 mu g/ml) occurred when it was combined with sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) in a 1: 4 TCC/SDS ratio (wt/wt) in distilled water solution. 1.8 g/l TCC entrapped in calcium alginate added to the must with yeast extract inhibited the growth of Lactobacillus fermentum CCT 1407 maintaining a controlled acidity, higher yeast viability and up to 20.8% of improvement in the average of alcoholic efficiency. Addition of 0.075 g/l TCC entrapped in calcium alginate and 1.67 mg/l SDS in the wort with yeast extract (0-5.0 g/l), inhibited and controlled the extensive bacterial contamination for 19 cycles of fermentation. Recently, the Tei-index, a noninvasive index that combines systolic and diastolic time intervals, has been proposed to assess global cardiac performance. However, the effects of isoflurane on the Tei-index have not been characterized. This study aimed at studying the effects of 1.0 minimal alveolar concentration isoflurane anesthesia on the pre-ejection period (PEP), left ventricular ejection time (LVET), PEP/LVET ratio, isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT), stroke index (SI), cardiac index (CI), heart rate (HR), and the Tei-index in healthy unpremedicated dogs. We observed significant increases in PEP, PEP/LVET ratio, IVRT, and TEI, whose maximal increases obtained throughout the study were 47%, 48%, 78%, and 56%, respectively. The LVET and HR did not change significantly, whereas the SI and CI decreased during anesthesia (29% and 26%, respectively). In conclusion, isoflurane produced direct effects on the Tei-index. The changes in systolic and diastolic parameters were supportive of this finding and were consistent with an overall impairment of left ventricular function during anesthesia.

This report compares the in vitro activity of three cephalosporins (cephalothin, cefoxitin and ceftriaxone) against 57 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from cows with clinical mastitis on the basis of the minimal inhibitory (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC). The majority of the S aureus strains showed resistance to cefoxitin and ceftriaxone and sensitivity to cephalothin. The highest MICs and MBCs were found for cefoxitin and ceftriaxone. Antimicrobial tolerance (MBC/MIC greater-than-or-equal-to 32:1) was observed in relation to cephalothin and ceftriaxone. The data suggest that these cephalosporins may not be effective for the treatment of staphylococcal bovine mastitis. The precise definition of their antimicrobial efficacies requires more detailed in vitro and in vivo studies.

Two hundred and seventy-seven multidrug resistant clinical isolates [K. pneumoniae, (N = 87); E coli, (N = 30); Salmonella typhimurium (N = 100); P. aeruginosa, (N = 30); S. aureus, (N = 30)] from hospitalized patients specimens, were tested in vitro for sensitivity to Ciprofloxacin. Application of the disk diffusion test and determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration by the microdilution method indicated that, almost all isolates were sensitive to the drug. Overall, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa were the less sensitive organisms. Ciprofloxacin-resistant mutants occurred at frequencies of > or = 10(-5)/CFU.

Since 1988 to 1992, a study about susceptibility to antimicrobial drugs of bacterias isolated from hospitalized patients was performed. The compared susceptibility to important drugs (ampicillin, cephalotin, cefoxitin, ceftaxizime, ceftriaxone, aztreonam, gentamicin, amikacin, pefloxacin, ciprofloxacin, imipenem, oxacillin and vancomycin) was investigated in 1200 strains (300 of each specie) of the prevalent bacterias: E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and S. aureus. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by agar dilution method, using from 0.05 to 256 mcg of each drug per ml of culture medium (Mueller-Hinton). Ranges of MIC, MIC(50%), MIC(90%) and the proportion of resistant strains were determined and permitted to know the 4 drugs that were found to be more active against bacterias; the CIM(90%) values are: E. coli - aztreonam (0.1 mcg/ml), pefloxacin (0.1), ceftazidime (0.25) and ceftriaxone (0.05); K. pneumoniae-aztreonam (0.25) ceftriaxone (0.25), ceftazidime (0.5) and pefloxacin (2.0); P. aeruginosa-imipenem (4.0), aztreonam (16), ceftazidime (16) and ciprofloxacin (16); S. aureus-vancomycin (1.01, ciprofloxacin (8, 0), amikacin (128) and cephalothin (128 mg/ml). The better 'in vitro' antibacterial activity observed was related to: aztreonam (77-100% of the sensitive strains), ceftazidime (50-99,7%), pefloxacin (73-99,7%), ciprofloxacin (80%), imipenem (93%) and vancomycin (100%).
