Supported metals are traditionally prepared by impregnating a support material with the metal precursor solution, followed by reduction in hydrogen at elevated temperatures. In this study, a polymeric support has been considered. Polypyrrole (PPy) has been chemically synthesized using FeCl3 as a doping agent, and it has been impregnated with a H2PtCl6 solution to prepare a catalyst precursor. The restricted thermal stability of polypyrrole does not allow using the traditional reduction in hydrogen at elevated temperature, and chemical reduction under mild conditions using sodium borohydride implies environmental concerns. Therefore, cold RF plasma has been considered an environmentally friendly alternative. Ar plasma leads to a more effective reduction of platinum ions in the chloroplatinic complex anchored onto the polypyrrole chain after impregnation than reduction with sodium borohydride, as has been evidenced by XPS. The increase of RF power enhanced the effectiveness of the Ar plasma treatment. A homogeneous distribution of platinum nanoparticles has been observed by TEM after the reduction treatment with plasma. The Pt/polypyrrol catalyst reduced by Ar plasma at 200 watts effectively catalyzed the aqueous reduction of nitrates with H2 to yield N2, with a very low selectivity to undesired nitrites and ammonium by-products.

Hydrogen peroxide is a substrate or side-product in many enzyme-catalyzed reactions. For example, it is a side-product of oxidases, resulting from the re-oxidation of FAD with molecular oxygen, and it is a substrate for peroxidases and other enzymes. However, hydrogen peroxide is able to chemically modify the peptide core of the enzymes it interacts with, and also to produce the oxidation of some cofactors and prostetic groups (e.g., the hemo group). Thus, the development of strategies that may permit to increase the stability of enzymes in the presence of this deleterious reagent is an interesting target. This enhancement in enzyme stability has been attempted following almost all available strategies: site-directed mutagenesis (eliminating the most reactive moieties), medium engineering (using stabilizers), immobilization and chemical modification (trying to generate hydrophobic environments surrounding the enzyme, to confer higher rigidity to the protein or to generate oxidation-resistant groups), or the use of systems capable of decomposing hydrogen peroxide under very mild conditions. If hydrogen peroxide is just a side-product, its immediate removal has been reported to be the best solution. In some cases, when hydrogen peroxide is the substrate and its decomposition is not a sensible solution, researchers coupled one enzyme generating hydrogen peroxide “in situ” to the target enzyme resulting in a continuous supply of this reagent at low concentrations thus preventing enzyme inactivation. This review will focus on the general role of hydrogen peroxide in biocatalysis, the main mechanisms of enzyme inactivation produced by this reactive and the different strategies used to prevent enzyme inactivation caused by this “dangerous liaison”.

Silica sub-microtubes loaded with platinum nanoparticles have been prepared in flexible non-woven mats using co-axial electrospinning technique. A partially gelated sol made from tetraethyl orthosilicate was used as the silica precursor, and oil was used as the sacrificial template for the hollow channel generation. Platinum has been supported on the wall of the tubes just adding the metallic precursor to the sol–gel, thus obtaining the supported catalyst by one-pot method. The silica tubes have a high aspect ratio with external/internal diameters of 400/200 nm and well-dispersed platinum nanoparticles of around 2 nm. This catalyst showed a high NO conversion with very high selectivity to N2 at mild conditions in the presence of excess oxygen when using C3H6 as reducing agent. This relevant result reveals the potential of this technique to produce nanostructured catalysts onto easy to handle conformations.

The silver-catalysed multicomponent reaction between ethyl glyoxylate, 2,2-dimethoxyacetaldehyde, or phenylglyoxal as aldehyde components with a α-amino ester hydrochloride and a dipolarophile in the presence of triethylamine is described. This domino process takes place at room temperature by in situ liberation of the α-amino ester followed by the formation of the imino ester, which is the precursor of a metalloazomethine ylide. The cycloaddition of this species and the corresponding dipolarophile affords polysubstituted proline derivatives. Ethyl glyoxylate reacts with glycinate, alaninate, phenylalaninate and phenylglycinate at room temperature in the presence of representative dipolarophiles affording endo-2,5-cis-cycloadducts in good yields and high diastereoselection. In addition, 2,2-dimethoxyacetaldehyde is evaluated with the same amino esters and dipolarophiles, under the same mild conditions, generating the corresponding endo-2,5-cis-cycloadducts with higher diastereoselections than the obtained in the same reactions using ethyl glyoxylate. In the case of phenylglyoxal the corresponding 5-benzoyl-endo-2,5-cis cycloadducts are obtained in short reaction times and similar diasteroselection.

Palladium impregnated on magnetite is an efficient, cheap and easy to prepare catalyst for the direct arylation of heterocycles. Good yields are afforded under relatively mild conditions and a broad substrate scope is evident. The catalyst is regioselective in many cases, affording arylated products, at the C2- or C3-position (depending of the heterocycle used). The methodology can be extended to prepare chromenes through an intramolecular direct arylation reaction. Some evidence is provided for two catalyst deactivation pathways, which prevents efficient recycling.

Mesoporous titania–organosilica nanoparticles comprised of anatase nanocrystals crosslinked with organosilica moieties have been prepared by direct co-condensation of a titania precursor, tetrabuthylortotitanate (TBOT), with two organosilica precursors, 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl) benzene (BTEB) and 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTEE), in mild conditions and in the absence of surfactant. These hybrid materials show both high surface areas (200–360 m2 g−1) and pore volumes (0.3 cm3 g−1) even after calcination, and excellent photoactivity in the degradation of rhodamine 6G and in the partial oxidation of propene under UV irradiation, especially after the calcination of the samples. During calcination, there is a change in the TiIV coordination and an increase in the content of Si[BOND]O[BOND]Ti moieties in comparison with the uncalcined materials, which seems to be responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of hybrid titania–silica materials as compared to both uncalcined samples and the control TiO2.

A statistical functional, such as the mean or the median, is called elicitable if there is a scoring function or loss function such that the correct forecast of the functional is the unique minimizer of the expected score. Such scoring functions are called strictly consistent for the functional. The elicitability of a functional opens the possibility to compare competing forecasts and to rank them in terms of their realized scores. In this paper, we explore the notion of elicitability for multi-dimensional functionals and give both necessary and sufficient conditions for strictly consistent scoring functions. We cover the case of functionals with elicitable components, but we also show that one-dimensional functionals that are not elicitable can be a component of a higher order elicitable functional. In the case of the variance, this is a known result. However, an important result of this paper is that spectral risk measures with a spectral measure with finite support are jointly elicitable if one adds the “correct” quantiles. A direct consequence of applied interest is that the pair (Value at Risk, Expected Shortfall) is jointly elicitable under mild conditions that are usually fulfilled in risk management applications.

2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl(p-ethoxyphenyl)tellurium(II), (RR1Te) reacts with HgC12 at room temperature to give white HgCl2.RR1Te. On setting aside, or on warming the reaction mixture a yellow material, [R1HgCl.(RTeCl)2] is formed. Multinuclear NMR(125Te, 199Hg, 1H) and mass spectroscopy confirm the formulation, and confirm the ease of transfer of the p-ethoxyphenyl group (R1) between the metal centres. The crystal structure of the yellow material consists of two discrete RTeCl molecules together with a R1HgCl molecule. There is no dative bond formation between these species, hence the preferred description of the formation of an inclusion complex. The reaction of RR1Te with Copper(I) chloride in the cold gives an air sensitive yellow product Cu3Cl3(RR1Te)2(0.5CH3CN); under reflux in air changes to the green Cu2Cl(RR1Te)(0.5 EtOH). By contrast, the reaction of RR1Te with acetonitrile solution of Copper(II) salts under mild conditions affords the white materials CuCl(RR1Te) and CuBr(RR1Te)H2O. RR1Te reacts with PdCl2 and PtCl2 to give materials albeit not well defined, can be seen as intermediates to the synthesis of inorganic phase of the type M3XTe2XCl2X. Paramagnetism is associated with some of the palladium and platinum products. The 195Pt NMR measurement in DMSO establishes the presence of six platinum species, which are assigned to Pt(IV), Pt(III) or Pt(II). The reactions show that in the presence of PdCl2 or PtCl2 both R and R1 are very labile. The reaction of RHgCl(R= 2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl) with SeX4(X= Cl, Br) gives compounds which suggest that both Trans-metallation and redox processes are involved. By varying reaction conditions materials which appear to be intermediates in the trans-metallation process are isolated. Potentially bidentate tellurium ligands having molecular formula RTe(CH2)nTeR,Ln, (R= Ph,(t-Bu). C6H4, n = 5,10) are prepared. Palladium and Platinum complexes containing these ligands are prepared. Also complex Ph3SnC1L(L = p-EtO.C6H4) is prepared.

Three British bituminous coals, (Gedling, Cresswell, and Cortonwood Silkstone) were selected for study. Procedures were developed, using phase transfer catalysts (PTC's), to degrade the solvent insoluble fractions of the coals. PTC's are of interest because they have the potential to bring about selective high conversion reactions, under mild conditions, (often in the past, severe reaction conditions have had to be used to degrade the coals, this in turn resulted in the loss of much of the structural information). We have applied a variety of physical and chemical techniques to maximise the amount of structural information, these include, elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, 13C-CPMAS-NMR, GPC, GC-MS, FTIR spectroscopy, DRIFT spectroscopy, and gas adsorption measurements. The main conclusions from the work are listed below:- ( 1 ) PTC O-methylation; This reaction removes hydrogen bonds within the coal matrix by 'capping' the phenolic groups. It was found that the polymer-like matrix could be made more flexible, but not significantly more soluble, by O-methylation. I.E. the trapped or 'mobile' phase of the coals could be removed at a faster rate after this reaction had been carried out. ( 2 ) PTC Reductive and Acidic Ether Cleavage; The three coals were found to contain insignificant amounts of dialkyl and alkyl aryl ethers. The number of diaryl ethers could not be estimated, by reductive ether cleavage, (even though a high proportion of all three coals was solublised). The majority of the ethers present in the coals were inert to both cleavage methods, and are therefore assumed to be heterocyclic ethers. ( 3 ) Trif!uoroperacetic Acid Oxidation; This oxidant was used to study the aliphatic portions of the polymer-like macromolecular matrix of the coals. Normally this reagent will only solublise low rank coals, we however have developed a method whereby trifluoroperacetic acid can be used to degrade high rank bituminous coals. ( 4 ) PTC/Permanganate Oxidation; This reagent has been found to be much more selective than the traditional alkaline permanganate oxidation, with a lot more structural information being retained within the various fractions. This degradative method therefore has the potential of yielding new information about the molecular structure of coals.

We explore the effects of over-specificity in learning algorithms by investigating the behavior of a student, suited to learn optimally from a teacher B, learning from a teacher B' ? B. We only considered the supervised, on-line learning scenario with teachers selected from a particular family. We found that, in the general case, the application of the optimal algorithm to the wrong teacher produces a residual generalization error, even if the right teacher is harder. By imposing mild conditions to the learning algorithm form, we obtained an approximation for the residual generalization error. Simulations carried out in finite networks validate the estimate found.

Responsive core-shell latex particles are used to prepare colloidosome microcapsules using thermal annealing and internal cross-linking of the shell, allowing production of the microcapsules at high concentrations. The core-shell particles are composed of a polystyrene core and a shell of poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-b-poly[methyl methacrylate] (PDMA-b-PMMA) chains adsorbed onto the core surface, providing steric stabilisation. The PDMA component of adsorbed polymer shell confers the latex particle thermal and pH responsive characteristics, it also provides glass transitions at lower temperatures than that of the core and reactive amine groups. These features facilitate the formation of stable Pickering emulsion droplets and the immobilisation of the latex particle monolayer on these droplets to form colloidosome microcapsules. The immobilisation is achieved through thermal annealing or cross-linking of the shell at mild conditions feasible for large scale economic production. We demonstrate here that it is possible to anneal the particle monolayer on the emulsion drop surface at 75-86 ºC by using the lower glass transition temperature of the shell compared to that of the polystyrene cores (~108 ºC). The colloidosome microcapsules formed have a rigid membrane basically composed of a monolayer of particles. Chemical cross-linking has also been successfully achieved by confining a cross-linker within the disperse droplet. This approach leads to the formation of single-layered stimulus-responsive soft colloidosome membranes and provides the advantage of working at very high emulsion concentrations since inter-droplet cross-linking is thus avoided. The porosity and mechanical strength of microcapsules are also discussed here in terms of the observed structure of the latex particle monolayers forming the capsule membrane.

Direct, solid phase synthesis of an oligonucleotide conjugate of the antibiotic drug metronidazole was accomplished by the phosphoramidite method. Removal of protecting groups and cleavage from the controlled pore glass (CPG) solid support was successful using mild conditions (20% EtN in pyridine, then conc. NH (aq) at rt for 30 min) whereas standard conditions (conc. NH (aq) at 55°C for 16 h) cleaved the drug. © 2006 by MDPI.

Surfactant templating offers a simple route to synthesize high-surface area silicas with ordered, tunable mesopore architectures. The use of these materials as versatile catalyst supports for palladium nanoparticles has been explored in the aerobic selective oxidation (selox) of allylic alcohols under mild conditions. Families of Pd/mesoporous silicas, synthesized through incipient wetness impregnation of SBA-15, SBA-16, and KIT-6, have been characterized by using nitrogen porosimetry, CO chemisorption, diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and high-resolution TEM and benchmarked in liquid phase allylic alcohol selox against a Pd/amorphous SiO2 standard. The transition from amorphous to two-dimensional parallel and three-dimensional interpenetrating porous silica networks conferred significant selox rate enhancements associated with higher surface densities of active palladium oxide sites. Dissolved oxygen was essential for insitu stabilization of palladium oxide, and thus maintenance of high activity on-stream, whereas selectivity to the desired aldehyde selox product over competing hydrogenolysis pathways was directed by using palladium metal. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A series of WOx/ZrO2 with various tungsten loadings was prepared via incipient-wetness impregnation of zirconium hydroxide. The resulting thermally processed materials were characterised by XRD, XPS, porosimetry, NH3-TPD and pyridine FTIR spectroscopy to elucidate their composition, morphology and acidity, and subsequently tested in the esterification of palmitic acid with methanol. Catalytic performance was strongly dependent upon calcination temperature and W surface density. Esterification activity increased with increasing surface W density, reaching a maximum at 8.9Wnm-2 corresponding to near monolayer coverage. Subsequent growth of crystalline WO3 lowered activity, consistent with a decrease in the density of active surface sites. Calcination temperatures as high as 800°C increased surface acidity and hence catalytic activity. The formation of polymeric tungstate species on zirconia is necessary to generate the Brönsted acid sites responsible for palmitic acid esterification under mild conditions. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
