A diode-cladding-pumped dual wavelength Q-switched Ho3+ -doped fluoride cascade fiber laser operating in the mid-infrared is demonstrated. Stable pulse trains from the 5|6 -> 5|7 and 5|7 -> 5|8 laser transitions were produced, and the µs-level time delay between the pulses from each transition was dependent on the pump power. At maximum pump power and at an acousto-optic modulator repetition rate of 25 kHz, the 5|8 -> 5|7 transition pulse operated at 3.005 µm, a pulse energy of 29 µJ, and a pulse width of 380 ns; the 5|7 -> 5|8 transition pulse correspondingly produced 7 µJ pulse energy and 260 ns pulse width at 2.074 µm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a Q-switched fiber laser operating beyond 3 µm.

A fine control of the microstructured polymer fiber Bragg grating spectrum properties, such as maximum reflected power and 3-dB bandwidth, through acousto-optic modulation is presented. For simulation purposes, the device is modelled as a single structure, comprising a silica horn and a fiber Bragg grating. For similar sized structures a good correlation between the numerical results and the experimental data is obtained, allowing the strain field to be completely characterized along the whole structure. It is also shown that the microstructured polymer fiber Bragg grating requires less effort from the piezoelectric actuator to produce modification in the grating spectrum when compared with a silica fiber Bragg grating. This technique has potential to be applied on tunable optical filters and tunable cavities for photonic applications.

Here we present a compact tunable all-room-temperature frequency-doubling scheme, using a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) waveguide and a QD-ECDL. A broad wavelength tunability of the second harmonic generated light (SHG) in the spectral region between 567.7 and 629.1 nm was achieved, with maximum conversion efficiencies in range of 0.34%-7.9%. The maximum output power for the SHG light was 4.11 mW at 591.5 nm, achieved for 52 mW of launched pump power at 1183 nm, resulting in a conversion efficiency of 7.9%.

Here we present a compact all-room-temperature frequency-doubling scheme generating orange light, using a PPKTP waveguide and a quantum-dot external cavity diode laser (QD-ECDL). The maximum output power for the second harmonic generated light (SHG) was 1.43 mW at 613 nm, achieved for 70 mW of launched pump power at 1226 nm. This represents an important step towards a compact and wall-plug-efficient coherent orange light source, operating at room temperature.

A compact all-room-temperature CW 73-nm tunable laser source in the visible spectral region (574nm-647nm) has been demonstrated by frequency-doubling of a broadly-tunable InAs/GaAs quantum dot external-cavity diode laser in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate waveguides with a maximum output power in excess of 12mW and a maximum conversion efficiency exceeding 10%. Three waveguides with different cross-sectional areas (4×4μm2, 3×5μm2 and 2x6μm2) were investigated. Introduction - Development of compact broadly tunable laser sources in the visible spectral region is currently very attractive area of research with applications ranging from photomedicine and biophotonics to confocal fluorescence microscopy and laser projection displays. In this respect, semiconductor lasers with their small size, high efficiency, reliability and low cost are very promising for realization of such sources by frequencydoubling of the infrared light in nonlinear crystal waveguides. Furthermore, the wide tunability offered by quantum-dot (QD) external-cavity diode lasers (ECDL), due to the temperature insensibility and broad gain bandwidth [1,2], is very promising for the development of tunable visible laser sources [3,4]. In this work we show a compact green-to-red tunable allroom-temperature CW laser source using a frequency-doubled InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal waveguides. This laser source generates frequency-doubled light over the 574nm-647nm wavelength range utilizing the significant difference in the effective refractive indices of high-order and low-order modes in multimode waveguides [3]. Experimental results - Experimental setup used in this work was similar to that described in [3] and consisted of a QD gain chip in the quasiLittrow configuration and a PPKTP waveguide. Coarse wavelength tuning of the QD-ECDL between 1140 nm and 1300 nm at 20°C was possible for pump current of 1.5 A. The laser output was coupled into the PPKTP waveguide using an AR-coated 40x aspheric lens (NA ~ 0.55). The PPKTP frequency-doubling crystal (not AR coated) used in our work was 18 mm in length and was periodically poled for SHG (with the poling period of ~ 11.574 11m). The crystal contained 3 different waveguides with cross-sectional areas of ~ 4x4 11m2, 3x5 11m2 and 2x6 11m2. Both the pump laser and the PPKTP crystal were operating at room temperature. The waveguides with cross-sectional areas of 4x411m2, 3x511m2 and 2x611m2 demonstrated the tunability in the wavelength ranges of 577nm - 647nm, 576nm -643nm and 574nm - 641nm, respectively, with a maximum output power of 12.04mW at 606 nm Conclusion - We demonstrated a compact all-room-temperature broadlytunable laser source operating in the visible spectral region between 574nm and 647nm. This laser source is based on second harmonic generation in PPKTP waveguides with different cross-sectional areas using an InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL References [I] E.U. Rafailov, M.A. Cataluna, and W. Parameter optimization of a two-stage Raman fibre converters (RFC) based on phosphosilicate core fiber was presented. The optimal operational regime was determined and tolerance of the converter against variations of laser parameters was analyzed. Converter was pumped by ytterbium-doped double-clad fibre laser with a maximum output power of 3.8W at 1061 nm. A phosphosilicate-core RFC with enhanced performance was fabricated using the results of numerical modelling.

We present a compact, all-room-temperature continuous-wave laser source in the visible spectral region between 574 and 647 nm by frequency doubling of a broadly tunable InAs/GaAs quantum-dot external-cavity diode laser in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal containing three waveguides with different cross-sectional areas (4 × 4, 3 × 5, and 2 μm × 6 μm). The influence of a waveguide's design on tunability, output power, and mode distribution of second-harmonic generated light, as well as possibilities to increase the conversion efficiency via an optimization of a waveguide's cross-sectional area, was systematically investigated. A maximum output power of 12.04 mW with a conversion efficiency of 10.29% at 605.6 nm was demonstrated in the wider waveguide with the cross-sectional area of 4 μm × 4 μm.

The present work addresses the control of the mPOF Bragg grating spectrum properties through acousto-optic modulation. For the first time, the interaction of a flexural acoustic wave, generated by longitudinal excitation of different frequencies, with the Bragg grating will be presented. Also it will be demonstrated the quasi linear relationship between PZT load and maximum reflected power/ 3dB bandwidth of the reflected spectrum.

A fine control of the mPOF Bragg grating spectrum properties, such as maximum reflected power and 3dB bandwidth, through acousto-optic modulation (AOM) using flexural regime is presented. A numerical comparison of the strain field along mPOFBG - AOM and the similar structure with SMFBG-AOM was presented, showing that the strain field amplitude is higher along the mPOFBG due to its smaller mechanical stiffness. The obtained results can be used in the development of fine-tuned optical filters using low voltage sources and low frequency regimes, to obtain tunable optical filters and to control the shape of the spectrum. Studies of the behavior in different gratings (such as phase shifted and long period gratings) for photonic applications, such as tunable notch filters or tunable cavities, are in progress. It can potentially be applied on tunable optical filters for POF transmission. © 2012 IEEE.

We demonstrate a Q-switched Raman fiber laser using molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as a saturable absorber (SA). The SA is assembled by depositing a mechanically exfoliated MoS2 onto a fiber ferrule facet before it is matched with another clean ferrule via a connector. It is inserted in a Raman fiber laser cavity with a total cavity length of about 8km to generate a Q-switching pulse train operating at 1560.2 nm. A 7.7-km-long dispersion compensating fiber with 584 ps·nm?1km?1 of dispersion is used as a nonlinear gain medium. As the pump power is increased from 395mW to 422mW, the repetition rate of the Q-switching pulses can be increased from 132.7 to 137.4 kHz while the pulse width is concurrently decreased from 3.35μs to 3.03 μs. The maximum pulse energy of 54.3 nJ is obtained at the maximum pump power of 422mW. These results show that the mechanically exfoliated MoS2 SA has a great potential to be used for pulse generation in Raman fiber laser systems.

We demonstrate an ultra-compact, room-Temperature, continuous-wave, broadly-Tunable dual-wavelength InAs/GaAs quantum-dot external-cavity diode laser in the spectral region between 1150 nm and 1301 nm with maximum output power of 280 mW. This laser source generating two modes with tunable difference-frequency (300 GHz-30 THz) has a great potential to replace commonly used bulky lasers for THz generation in photomixer devices.

We propose cyclic prefix single carrier full-duplex transmission in amplify-and-forward cooperative spectrum sharing networks to achieve multipath diversity and full-duplex spectral efficiency. Integrating full-duplex transmission into cooperative spectrum sharing systems results in two intrinsic problems: 1) the residual loop interference occurs between the transmit and the receive antennas at the secondary relays and 2) the primary users simultaneously suffer interference from the secondary source (SS) and the secondary relays (SRs). Thus, examining the effects of residual loop interference under peak interference power constraint at the primary users and maximum transmit power constraints at the SS and the SRs is a particularly challenging problem in frequency selective fading channels. To do so, we derive and quantitatively compare the lower bounds on the outage probability and the corresponding asymptotic outage probability for max–min relay selection, partial relay selection, and maximum interference relay selection policies in frequency selective fading channels. To facilitate comparison, we provide the corresponding analysis for half-duplex. Our results show two complementary regions, named as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) dominant region and the residual loop interference dominant region, where the multipath diversity and spatial diversity can be achievable only in the SNR dominant region, however the diversity gain collapses to zero in the residual loop interference dominant region.
