Mg-8Gd-0.6Zr-xNd-yY (mass%) alloys which containing different Nd:Y mass ratio of 3:0, 2:1, 1:2 and 0:3 with a constant x + y = 3 were prepared by metal mould casting method, and the microstructure, aging behaviour and tensile properties have been investigated. The fibrous eutectic areas along the boundaries enlarge clearly in the as-cast alloys containing Y element, and the fine grain boundaries and dispersed precipitation are observed in the aged alloys. The Mg-8Gd-0.6Zr-2Nd-Y alloy exhibits notably age-hardening behaviour and the highest mechanical property. The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of Mg-8Gd-0.6Zr-2Nd-Y alloy in the peak aged hardness are 293 and 221 MPa at room temperature, 248 and 191 MPa at 230 degrees C. The improvement of age-hardening response and tensile properties is mainly attributed to the quadrate-like stable Mg5RE precipitate, which forms readily and orderly in aged Mg-8Gd-0.6Zr-2Nd-Y alloy.

All the exciting work on developing new and better alloys has led older alloys, such as AZ9l , being abandoned by researchers. lt is believed that the full potential of AZ9l in automotive design has not been realized. Whatever works have been carried out on AZ9lalloy to improve its mechanical properties are insufficient in terms of its potential usage in auto industries. Due to the fact that AZ91 offers high room temperature mechanical properties and good castability, still this alloy is a primary choice for the auto component manufactures. Small improvement in its creep properties will have a huge impact in the transportation industries. Hence, in the present work, “Influence of Si, Sb and Sr Additions on the Microstructure, Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Behavior of AZ91 Magnesium Alloy”, an attempt has been made to improve the creep properties of AZ9l alloy through minor alloying elemental additions and to understand its strengthening mechanisms. The effect of alloying additions on the ageing and tensile properties of AZ9l is also studied. In addition to that, role of various intermetallics formed due to the alloying additions on the corrosion properties of AZ9l alloy is investigated.

The cation substitutions in the crystal lattice of binary potassium-holmium vanadate (V) K3Ho(VO4)2 by magnesium have been studied using various types of chemical solid state reactions. It was shown that in the presence of the quasi-ternary system K3VO4-Mg3(VO4)2-HoVO 4 at 700°C there a compound defined as K3Ho(VO4)2 with a narrow homogeneity range where K and Ho are partially substituted by Mg in accordance with various schemes. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science S.A.

Removal of Mg from aluminum scraps, known as demagging, has been widely applied in the, aluminum industry. This work discusses bubble-formation theories and magnesium kinetic removal from aluminum scraps using chlorine and inert gas fluxing. The interfacial area of the bubbles and residence time were estimated using a mathematical model. To inject gaseous chlorine, three types of nozzles were used with varying internal diameter. In addition, a porous plug, as well as varying input chlorine flow and concentration were used. The use of lower chlorine concentration improves efficiency because the interfacial tension is reduced therefore, more and smaller bubbles are formed. The model proposed herein is consistent with the experimental data. [doi:10.2320/matertrans.M2011256]

Although there is no standardized list of alloys, most investigators have, to avoid confusion, concurred in at least grouping the metals under several general heads. Precious metals: gold, silver and the platinum group; the light metals: aluminum and magnesium; the non-ferrous metals (excluding all steels and iron-base alloys); and the antifriction metals.

Magnesium is one of the most active elements and forms oxides, nitrides, and carbides, but not hydrides. Due to its activity, low melting point, low strength when unalloyed, and the difficulty with which it is worked, magnesium has not been and is not at present well developed.

One of the main limiting factors in the development of new magnesium (Mg) alloys with enhanced mechanical behavior is the need to use vast experimental campaigns for microstructure and property screening. For example, the influence of new alloying additions on the critical resolved shear stresses (CRSSs) is currently evaluated by a combination of macroscopic single-crystal experiments and crystal plasticity finite-element simulations (CPFEM). This time-consuming process could be considerably simplified by the introduction of high-throughput techniques for efficient property testing. The aim of this paper is to propose a new and fast, methodology for the estimation of the CRSSs of hexagonal close-packed metals which, moreover, requires small amounts of material. The proposed method, which combines instrumented nanoindentation and CPFEM modeling, determines CRSS values by comparison of the variation of hardness (H) for different grain orientations with the outcome of CPFEM. This novel approach has been validated in a rolled and annealed pure Mg sheet, whose H variation with grain orientation has been successfully predicted using a set of CRSSs taken from recent crystal plasticity simulations of single-crystal experiments. Moreover, the proposed methodology has been utilized to infer the effect of the alloying elements of an MN11 (Mg–1% Mn–1% Nd) alloy. The results support the hypothesis that selected rare earth intermetallic precipitates help to bring the CRSS values of basal and non-basal slip systems closer together, thus contributing to the reduced plastic anisotropy observed in these alloys

Implants that can be metabolized by the human body have appeared as one of the most attractive and promising solutions to overcome limitations and improve the features of current implantable devices. Biodegradable polymers and magnesium (Mg) alloys have played an important role writing the history of resorbable implants [1,2]. This paper presents the processing by extrusion/compression moulding, mechanical characterization, thermal characterization and in vitro biocompatibility of a novel generation of resorbable materials based on a polymeric matrix reinforced with metallic Mg particles.

The corrosion behaviour of die cast magnesium alloy AZ91D aged at 160degreesC was investigated. The corrosion rate of the alloy decreases with ageing time in the initial stages and then increases again at ageing times greater than 45 h. The dependence of the corrosion rate on ageing time can be related to the changes in microstructure and local composition during ageing. Precipitation of the beta phase (Mg17Al12) occurs exclusively along the grain boundaries during ageing. The beta phase acts as a barrier, resulting in a decreasing corrosion rate in the initial stages of ageing. In the later stages, the decreasing aluminium content of alpha grains makes the alpha matrix more active, causing an increase in the corrosion rate. Electrochemical testing results also confirm the combined effects of the changes in alpha and beta phases on the corrosion resistance of the aged die cast AZ91D alloy. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Selective laser sintering has been used to fabricate an aluminium alloy powder preform which is subsequently debound and infiltrated with a second aluminium alloy. This represents a new rapid manufacturing system for aluminium that can be used to fabricate large, intricate parts. The base powder is an alloy such as AA6061. The infiltrant is a binary or higher-order eutectic based on either Al-Cu or At-Si. To ensure that infiltration occurs without loss of dimensional precision, it is important that a rigid skeleton forms prior to infiltration. This can be achieved by the partial transformation of the aluminium to aluminium nitride. In order for this to occur throughout the component, magnesium powder must be added to the alumina support powder which surrounds the part in the furnace. The magnesium scavenges the oxygen and thereby creates a microclimate in which aluminium nitride can form. The replacement of the ionocovalent Al2O3 with the covalent AlN on the surface of the aluminium powders also facilitates wetting and thus spontaneous and complete infiltration. The flow stress in tension and compression has been measured as a function of plastic strain in Mg-2Zn castings with grain sizes ranging from 55 to 340 mum. Hall-Petch parameters have been calculated and are compared to those previously reported. In contrast to the behaviour of pure Mg grain refined with Zr and of hot-worked and recrystallised pure Mg and Mg-Zn alloys, the cast material shows little tension/compression asymmetry of the flow stress. The possible effects of texture and of twinning are noted. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Detailed microscopic examination using optical and electron microscopes suggests that Al4C3, often observed in the central regions of magnesium grains on polished sections, is a potent substrate for primary Mg. Calculations of the crystallographic relationships between magnesium and Al4C3 further support the experimental observations. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The galvanic corrosion of magnesium alloy AZ91D coupled to a steel fastener was studied using a boundary element method (BEM) model and experimental measurements. The BEM model used the measured polarization curves as boundary conditions. The experimental program involved measuring the total corrosion rate as a function of distance from the interface of the magnesium in the form of a sheet containing a mild steel circular insert (5 to 30 mm in diameter). The measured total corrosion rate was interpreted as due to galvanic corrosion plus self corrosion. For a typical case, the self corrosion was estimated typically to be similar to 230 mm/y for an area surrounding the interface and to a distance of about I cm from the interface. Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (SKPFM) revealed microgalvanic cells with potential differences of approximately 100 mV across the AZ91D surface. These microgalvanic cells may influence the relative contributions of galvanic and self corrosion to the total corrosion of AZ91D.
