The transfer of sodium and potassium ions facilitated by dibenzo-15-crown-5 (DB15C5) has been studied at the micro-water/1,2-dichloroethane (water/DCE) interface supported at the tip of a micropipette. Cyclic volt-ammetric measurements were performed in two limiting conditions: the bulk concentration of Na+ or K+ in the aqueous phase is much higher than that of DB15C5 in the organic phase (DB15C5 diffusion controlled process) and the reverse condition (metal ion diffusion controlled process). The mechanisms of the facilitated Na+ transfer by DB15C5 are both transfer by interfacial complexation (TIC) with 1 : 1 stoichiometry under these two conditions, and the corresponding association constants were determined at log beta(1) = 8.97 +/- 0.05 or log beta(1) = 8.63 +/- 0.03. However, the transfers of K+ facilitated by DB15C5 show different behavior. In the former case it is a TIC process and its stoichiometry is 1 : 2, whereas in the latter case two peaks during the forward scan were observed, the first of which was confirmed as the formation of K (DB15C5)(2) at the interface by a TIC mechanism, while the second one may be another TIC process with 1 : 1 stoichiometry in the more positive potential. The relevant association constants calculated for the complexed ion, K+(DB15C5)(2), in the organic phase in two cases, logbeta(2), are 13.64 +/- 0.03 and 11.34 +/- 0.24, respectively.

A surface diffusion method was proposed and applied to prepare blue phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+. The results show that, compared with the direct synthesis method by common high temperature solid state, the concentration of Eu2+ in the phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ prepared by the surface diffusion method can be greatly reduced owing to the activator Eu2+ ions distributed mainly over the surface of the phosphor. It is possible to reduce the cost of this kind of the luminescent materials with the aid of the surface diffusion method.

Bond covalency, bond susceptibility and macroscopic linear susceptibility in NdCr1-xMxO3 (M=Mn, Fe, Co, 0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) are investigated by complex chemical bond theory. The results indicate the bond covalencies are insensitive to the doping level. With the increasing doping level, the macroscopic linear susceptibilities increase for M=Mn, Fe, decrease for M=Co. The valence state of Cr can be strongly influenced by the properties of the doping ions.

The crystal structure of [Mn(thiamine)Cl2(H2O)]2[thiamine]2Cl4.2H2O has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The compound contains a cyclic dimer of a complex cation with two thiamine ligands bridged by two Mn(II) ions across a crystallographic center of symmetry. Each Mn(II) is coordinated by two chloride atoms, a water molecule, a N(1') atom of the pyrimidine from a thiamine and an O(53) atom of the hydroxyethyl side chain from another thiamine. There are two free-base thiamine molecules related by a center of symmetry in the unit cell, which form a base-pair through the hydrogen bonds. Both the independent thiamine molecules in the asymmetric unit assume the common F conformation with phi-T = 10.0(9) and 3.6(10) and phi-P = 85.6(7) and 79.6(7), respectively. The compound provides a possible model for a metal-bridged enzyme-coenzyme complex in thiamine catalysis. Crystallographic data: triclinic, space group P1BAR, a = 12.441(4), b = 13.572(4), c = 11.267(3) angstrom, alpha = 103.15(2), beta 89.03(3), gamma = 115.64(2)-degrees, Z = 1, D(calc) = 1.524 g cm-3, and R = 0.050 for 3019 observed reflections with I > 3-sigma(I).

Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy has been used to simultaneously follow the diffusion of model drugs and solvent across polydimethylsiloxane (silicone) membrane. Three model drugs, cyanophenol (CNP), methyl nicotinate (MN) and butyl paraben (BP) were selected to cover a range of lipophilicities. Isostearyl isostearate (ISIS) was chosen as the solvent because its large molecular weight should facilitate observation of whether the drug molecules are able to diffuse through the membrane independently of the solvent. The diffusion of the three drugs and the solvent was successfully described by a Fickian model. The effects of parameters such as the absorption wavelength used to follow diffusion on the calculated diffusion coefficient were investigated. Absorption wavelength which affects the depth of penetration of the infrared radiation into the membrane did not significantly affect the calculated diffusion coefficient over the wavelength range tested. Each of the model drugs was observed to diffuse independently of the solvent across the membrane. The diffusion of a CNP-ISIS hydrogen bonded complex across the membrane was also monitored. The relative diffusion rates of the solute and solvent across the membrane can largely be accounted for by the molecular size of the permeant.

The quantitative effects of Cu8+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ on the cytochemical staining reaction for lysosomal N-acetyl-/?-D-glucosaminidase have been determined and related to the inhibitory effects of the metals on colonial growth rate in the experimentally cultured hydroid Campanularia flexuosa. Cytochemical threshold concentrations are comparable to known environmental levels and are about one order of magnitude lower than those obtained by measuring colony growth rates. Pretreatment of colonies with Cuz+ gave no indication of tolerance adaptation, although there is evidence of the cumulative toxicity of Cu2+ and the possible sequestration of this metal in endodermal cell lysosomes. There is also an indication that the Cu2+ may exert its toxic effect by decreasing the stability of the lysosomal membranes, thus increasing the level of free glucosaminidase activity.

Theoretical emission-line ratios involving transitions in the 236-412 Angstrom wavelength range are presented for the Na-like ions Ar viii, Cr xiv, Mn xv, Fe xvi, Co xvii, Ni xviii and Zn xx. A comparison of these with an extensive data set of the solar active region, quiet-Sun, subflare and off-limb observations, obtained during rocket flights by the Solar EUV Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS), reveals generally very good agreement between theory and experiment. This indicates that most of the Na-like ion lines are reliably detected in the SERTS observations, and hence may be employed with confidence in solar spectral analyses. However, the features in the SERTS spectra at 236.34 and 300.25 Angstrom, originally identified as the Ni xviii 3p (2) P-3/2 -3d (2) D- 3/2 and Cr xiv 3p (2) P-3/2 -3d (2) D-5/2 transitions, respectively, are found to be due to emission lines of Ar xiii (236.34 Angstrom) and possibly S v or Ni vi (300.25 Angstrom). The Co xvii 3s (2) S-3p (2) P-3/2 line at 312.55 Angstrom is always badly blended with an Fe xv feature at the same wavelength, but Mn xv 3s (2) S-3p (2) P-1/2 at 384.75 Angstrom may not always be as affected by second-order emission from Fe xii 192.37 Angstrom as previously thought. On the other hand, we find that the Zn xx 3s (2) S-3p (2) P-3/2 transition can sometimes make a significant contribution to the Zn xx/Fe xiii 256.43- Angstrom blend, and hence care must be taken when using this feature as an Fe xiii electron density diagnostic. A line in the SERTS-89 active region spectrum at 265.00 Angstrom has been re-assessed, and we confirm its identification as the Fe xvi 3p (2) P-3/2 -3d (2) D-3/2 transition.

The electrochemical oxidation of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate [C(4)mim][NO3] was studied by cyclic voltammetry in the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide [C(2)mim][NTf2]. A sharp peak was observed on a Pt microelectrode (d = 10 mu m), and a diffusion coefficient at infinite dilution of ca. 2.0 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) was obtained. Next, the cyclic voltammetry of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) was studied, by dissolving small amounts of solid into the RTIL [ C2mim][ NTf2]. Similar oxidation peaks were observed, revealing diffusion coefficients of ca. 8.8 and 9.0 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) and solubilities of 11.9 and 10.8 mM for NaNO3 and KNO3, respectively. The smaller diffusion coefficients for NaNO3 and KNO3 (compared to [C(4)mim][NO3]) may indicate that NO3- is ion-paired with Na+ or K+. This work may have applications in the electroanalytical determination of nitrate in RTIL solutions. Furthermore, a reduction feature was observed for both NaNO3 and KNO3, with additional anodic peaks indicating the formation of oxides, peroxides, superoxides and nitrites. This behaviour is surprisingly similar to that obtained from melts of NaNO3 and KNO3 at high temperatures ( ca. 350 - 500 degrees C), and this observation could significantly simplify experimental conditions required to investigate these compounds. We then used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to suggest that disodium( I) oxide (Na2O), which has found use as a storage compound for hydrogen, was deposited on a Pt electrode surface following the reduction of NaNO3.

Surface reaction methodology was implicated in the optimization of hexavalent chromium removal onto lignin with respect to the process parameters. The influence of altering the conditions for removal of chromium(VI), for instance; solution pH, ionic strength, initial concentration, the dose of biosorbent, presence of other metals (Zn and Cu), presence of salts and biosorption-desorption studies, were investigated. It was found that the biosorption capacity of lignin depends on solution pH, with a maximum biosorption capacity for chromium at pH 2. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to five different isotherm models by non-linear regression method, however, the biosorption equilibrium data were well interpreted by the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum biosorption capacities (q(max)) obtained using Dubinin-Radushkevich and Khan isotherms for Cr(VI) biosorption are 31.6 and 29.1 mg/g. respectively. Biosorption showed pseudo second order rate kinetics at different initial concentrations of Cr(VI). The intraparticle diffusion study indicated that film diffusion may be involved in the current study. The percentage removal of chromium on lignin decreased significantly in the presence of NaHCO3 and K2P2O7 salts. Desorption data revealed that nearly 70% of the Cr(VI) adsorbed on lignin could be desorbed using 0.1 M NaOH. It was evident that the biosorption mechanism involves the attraction of both hexavalent chromium (anionic) and trivalent chromium (cationic) onto the surface of lignin. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Ultrasound promotes the reduction of hexacyanoferrate(III) by thiosulfate ions mediated by RuO2 . xH(2)O under diffusion-controlled conditions. There is a strong correlation between the measured first-order rate constant and the absorbance of the dispersion, which, in turn, is closely related to the specific surface area of the catalyst. The enhancement in rate with ultrasonic irradiation appears to be largely associated with the dispersive action of the ultrasound on the aggregated particles of RuO2 . xH(2)O. The rate of reaction increases with increasing %duty cycle and ultrasonic intensity. The measured overall activation energies for the reaction with and without ultrasound, i.e. 18 +/- 1 and 20 +/- 1 kJ mol(-1), respectively, are very similar to those expected for a diffusion-controlled reaction. The homogeneous reaction is not promoted by ultrasound.

The kinetics of reduction of hexacyanoferrate(III) by excess thiosulfate, mediated by RuO2.xH2O, are investigated. At high concentrations of S2O32- (0.1 mol dm-3) the kinetics of Fe(CN)63- reduction are first order with respect to [Fe(CN)63-] and [RuO2.xH2O] and independent of [Fe(CN)64-], [S2O32-] and [S4O62-]. At relatively low concentrations Of S2O32- (0.01 mol dm-3) and in the presence of appreciable concentrations of Fe(CN)64- and S4O62- (0.01 mol dm-3) the kinetics depend directly upon [Fe(CN)63-] and [RuO2.xH2O] and inversely upon [Fe(CN)64-]. Both sets of kinetics can be rationalised using an electrochemical model of redox catalysts in which a reversible reduction reaction [Fe(CN)63- + e- --> Fe(CN)64-] is coupled to an irreversible oxidation reaction (s2O32- - e- --> 1/2S4O62-), by a dispersion of RuO2.xH2O microelectrodes. At high concentrations Of S2O32- this model predicts that the kinetics of Fe(CN)63- reduction are controlled by the rate of diffusion of the Fe(CN)63- ions to the RuO2.xH2O particles. The kinetics observed at low concentrations of S2O32- are predicted by the electrochemical model, assuming that the Tafel slope for the oxidation Of S2O32- to S4O62- on the RuO2.xH2O particles is 56.4 mV decade-1.

The kinetics of the oxidation of Ru(bpy)32+ to Ru(bpy)33+ by T13+ ions, catalyzed by a dispersion of RuO2-xH2O in 3 mol dm-3 HNO3, are reported as a function of [Ru(bpy)32+], [Tl3+], [Tl+], [RuO2.xH2O], and temperature. The kinetics of Ru(bpy)32+ oxidation fit an electrochemical model of redox catalysis involving electron transfer between the two electrochemically reversible redox couples, i.e. Ru(bpy)33+/Ru(bpy)32+ and Tl3+/Tl+, mediated by the dispersion of microelectrode particles of RuO2.xH2O. In this model, the rate of reaction is assumed to be controlled by the diffusion of Ru(bpy)32+ toward, and Ru(bpy)33+ away from, the catalyst particles. The Arrhenius activation energy for the catalyzed reaction is 25.9 +/- 0.7 kJ mol-1, and the changes in enthalpy and entropy for the reaction are 36 +/- 2 kJ mol-1 and 127 +/- 6 J mol-1 K-1, respectively. This work describes a rare example of reversible heterogeneous redox catalysis.
