Orações concessivas independentes à luz da gramática discursivo-funcional

This paper investigates, in light of the theory of Functional Discourse Grammar (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008), the concessive clause that is not subordinated to other clauses, i.e., it has no semantic or syntactic relations with clauses before or after it, and which we call Independent Concessive. The aim is to describe the discursive properties and the semantic, morphosyntactic and prosodic structure of this type of clause, showing that its relevance is in the construction and organization of discourse. The results indicate that the Independent Concessive works in speech as a parenthesis which interrupts the discursive course and is then highlighted by a special prosodic contour, combined with the presence of Interactive Acts. It is therefore a Move, the highest layer of the Interpersonal Level, the level that relates to the pragmatic aspects of the grammar of a language. The universe of research used is the Iboruna corpus, a database that records a variety of Portuguese from the Northwest of São Paulo.

Relações de complementação no português brasileiro: uma perspectiva discursivo-funcional

É apresentado nesse estudo uma investigação sobre os tipos de orações completivas, distribuídas numa hierarquia entre mais ou menos verbal/nominal, tendo como suporte dados reais de conversação. This work examines relative constructions in Portuguese varieties based on the principle that Portuguese has a set of relativization strategies that are recognized in typological linguistics as constructions that define related groups of languages. It is postulated that these different strategies, when employed by the same linguistic system, do not really constitute variants of the same syntactic variable, but they are the speaker’s actual choices facing the necessity to perform different social and discursive functions.

A correlação locução adjetiva/adjetivo: uma análise funcional

This research deals with the relationship locução adjetiva / adjective, focusing the reasons for using one form or the other one, in situations where the speaker has a choice between an adjective or a locução adjetiva virtually correspondent and vice versa. In general, the objective is to investigate the possibility of correlation between locução adjetiva and adjective, and to identify motivations for the use of one form or the other one. The theoretical support of this paper is the Linguística Funcional Centrada no Uso (LFCU), which groups together theoretical and methodological assumptions of North American Functional Linguistics, represented by authors as Givón (1984), Bybee (2010), Traugott (2011), and Cognitive Linguistics, as developed by Lakoff (1987), Langacker (1987) and Lakoff and Johnson (2002). As regards the methodological procedures, this research is of qualitative and quantitative character: at first, we did the survey data in the texts that made up the corpus, followed by analysis of each them, especially the locução adjetiva, by considering the semantic, morphosyntactic, cognitive and pragmatic aspects. The corpus is composed of 36 texts, taken from 12 issues of the Veja magazine, published between January 2013 and March 2013. As for the results, in the case of locução adjetiva with related adjectives, this research has shown that the choice of former is due to semantic change, the use of lexicalized forms, to priming cases or to stylistic motivations. It means that the choices of one of these two forms go beyond lexical issues, since there are other motivations, such as syntactic, semantic and pragmatic ones.

Estudo funcional e fenotípico das células NK em esclerose sistémica

Introdução: A esclerose sistémica (ES) é uma doença reumática rara, onde se verifica uma reacção auto-imune, afectando o tecido conjuntivo. De etiologia desconhecida, esta patologia, dividide-se em dois subtipos: limitada e difusa, tendo como processos característicos e inter-relacionados: a lesão vascular, a reacção autoimune e a fibrose. As células NK modulam as doenças auto-imunes através das suas capacidades citotóxicas e de produção de citocinas. Deste modo procedeu-se ao estudo imunofenotípico e funcional de duas sub-populações de células Natural Killer (NK) (NK CD56dim e NK CD56bright). Métodos: Recorrendo à citometria de fluxo, caracterizamos fenotipicamente as células NK, com base na expressão de CD49e, CD29 e LAIR-1; funcionalmente, com base nas citocinas TNF-α e IFN-γ e citotoxicamente, com base na granzima B e na perforina. Resultados: Os nossos resultados sugerem uma diminuição da percentagem e valor absoluto de células NK totais e suas subpopulações, NK CD56dim e NK CD56bright, em doentes com ES, sobretudo na presença de úlceras digitais (UD) e fibrose pulmonar (FP). Observamos ainda uma diminuição da expressão de CD49e e um aumento da expressão de LAIR-1, nas células NK, em doentes com ES, principalmente nos que não apresentavam UD e FP. Num modo geral observou-se um aumento da frequência de células NK a expressar granzima B e perforina e um aumento da expressão destas duas proteínas. Conclusão: Concluímos que as células NK poderão ter um papel importante na fisiopatologia da ES, pelas alterações fenotípicas e funcionais, podendo, futuramente vir a ser utilizados na monitorização da severidade desta doença.

Exploring young student's functional thinking (Exploración del pensamiento funcional de estudiantes jóvenes)

The Early Years Generalizing Project (EYGP) involves Australian years 1 to 4 (age 5 to 9) students and investigates how they grasp and express generalizations. This paper focuses on data collected from 6 Year 1 students in an exploratory study within a clinical interview setting that required students to identify function rules. Preliminary findings suggest that the use of gestures (both by students and interviewers), self-talk (by students), and concrete acting out, assisted students to reach generalizations and to begin to express these generalities. It also appears that as students became aware of the structure, their use of gestures and selftalk tended to decrease.
