Polyfluorenes are promising materials for the emitting layer of polymer light emitting devices (PLEDs) with blue emission. In this work, we report on PLEDs fabricated with Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a polyfluorene derivative, namely poly(9,9-di-hexylfluorenediyl vinylene-alt-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (PDHF-PV). Y-type LB films were transferred onto ITO substrates at a surface pressure of 35 mN m-1 and with dipping speed of 3 mm min -1. A thin aluminum layer was evaporated on top of the LB film, thus yielding a sandwich structure (ITO/PDHF-PV(LB)/Al). Current-voltage (I vs V) measurements indicate that the device displays a classical behavior of a rectifying diode. The threshold value is approximately 5 V, and the onset for visible light emission occurs at ca. 10 V. From the a.c. electrical responses we infer that the active layer has a typical behavior of PLEDs where the real component of ac conductivity obeys a power-law with the frequency. Cole-Cole plots (Im(Z) vs. Re(Z)) for the device exhibit a series of semicircles, the diameter of which decreases with increasing forward bias. This PLED structure is modeled by a parallel resistance and capacitance combination, representing the dominant mechanisms of charge transport and polarization in the organic layer, in series with a resistance representing the ITO contact. Overall, the results presented here demonstrate the feasibility of LEDs made with LB films of PDHF-PV.

Plasmon-enhanced spectroscopic techniques have expanded single-molecule detection (SMD) and are revolutionizing areas such as bio-imaging and single-cell manipulation. Surface-enhanced (resonance) Raman scattering (SERS or SERRS) combines high sensitivity with molecularfingerprint information at the single-molecule level. Spectra originating from single-molecule SERS experiments are rare events, which occur only if a single molecule is located in a hot-spot zone. In this spot, the molecule is selectively exposed to a significant enhancement associated with a high, local electromagnetic field in the plasmonic substrate. Here, we report an SMD study with an electrostatic approach in which a Langmuir film of a phospholipid with anionic polar head groups (PO 4 -) was doped with cationic methylene blue (MB), creating a homogeneous, two-dimensional distribution of dyes in the monolayer. The number of dyes in the probed area of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film coating the Ag nanostructures established a regime in which single-molecule events were observed, with the identification based on direct matching of the observed spectrum at each point of the mapping with a reference spectrum for the MB molecule. In addition, advanced fitting techniques were tested with the data obtained from micro-Raman mapping, thus achieving real-time processing to extract the MB single-molecule spectra. © 2013 Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

This paper presents a study of the applicability of adsorption isotherms, known as Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm, between the biosorptive interaction of yeast lyophilized Saccharomyces cerevisiae and textile dyes. To that end, we prepared stock solutions of the textile dyes Direct Red 23 and Direct Red 75 in the concentration of 1.000μg/mL and a yeast suspension at 2,5%. We did experiments for two cases, firstly for the case that we have a fix concentration of yeast at 0,500mg/mL and an variable concentration of dye range from40, 50, 60, 80 and 100μg/mL, then for the case that we fixed the concentration of dye at 100μg/mL and the yeast concentration was variable range from 0,250, 0,500, 0,750, 1,000, 1,250mg/mL. For the dye Direct Red 23 we did analysis in the pH 2,5, 4,5 and 6,5; for the Direct Red 75, we just did for the pH 2,5. We leave the dye solution in contact with the yeast for 2 hours at a constant temperature of 30°C and then centrifuged and analyzed the sample in a spectrophotometer and finally made and analysis of parameters for the removal and study of the isotherms. After the biosorption, was observed that for the Direct Red 23 in the pH 2,5 was needed 1,407mg/mL of yeast for total removal, while for the pH 4,5 was needed 8,806mg/mL and in pH 6,5 was 9,286mg/mL; for the Direct Red 75 in pH 2,5 was needed 1,337mg/mL. This difference can be explain by the adsorption isotherms, was observed that in the case when the yeast was fix when we had in a acid pH the behavior of the system was compatible with the Langmuir isotherm, and thus, an monolayer pattern. And that when we decrease the acidity of the medium the system became more compatible with a Freundlich isotherm, and thus, a multilayer pattern; for the case that the yeast was variable this is not much evident, however for the pH 2,5 she became compatible with a Langmuir isotherm... The synergistic effect produced by metallic nanoparticles when incorporated into different systems empowers a research field that is growing rapidly. In addition, organometallic materials are at the center of intensive research with diverse applications such as light-emitting devices, transistors, solar cells, and sensors. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique has proven to be suitable to address challenges inherent to organic devices, since the film properties can be tuned at the molecular level. Here we report a strategy to incorporate gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into the LB film by co-deposition in order to achieve surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the zinc(II)-protoporphyrin (IX) dimethyl ester (ZnPPIX-DME). Prior to the LB co-deposition, the properties of the Langmuir monolayer of ZnPPIX-DME at the air-water interface, containing AuNPs in the subphase, are studied through the surface-pressure versus mean molecular area (π-A) isotherms. The ZnPPIX-DME+AuNPs π-A isotherm presented a significant shift to higher molecular area, suggesting an interaction between both ZnPPIX-DME molecules and AuNPs. Those interactions are a key factor allowing the co-deposition of both AuNPs and ZnPPIX-DME molecules onto a solid substrate, thus forming the LB film. SERS of ZnPPIX-DME was successfully attained, ensuring the spatial distribution of the AuNPs. Higher enhancement factors were found at AuNP aggregates, as a result of the intense local electromagnetic field found in the metal nanoparticle aggregates. The main vibrational bands observed in the SERS spectra suggest a physical adsorption of the ZnPPIX-DME onto the surface of AuNPs. The latter is not only in agreement with the interactions pointed out by the π-A isotherms but also suggests that this interaction is kept upon LB film co-deposition.

We examined the interaction of the cationic antimicrobial peptide (AMP) tritrpticin (VRRFPWWWPFLRR, TRP3) with Langmuir monolayers of zwitterionic (dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, DPPC, and dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine, DPPE) and negatively charged phospholipids (dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid, DPPA, and dipalmitoyl phosphatidylglycerol, DPPG). Both surface pressure and surface potential isotherms became more expanded upon addition of TRP3 (DPPE similar to DPPC << DPPA < DPPG). The stronger interaction with negatively charged phospholipids agrees with data for vesicles and planar lipid bilayers, and with AMPs greater activity against bacterial membranes versus mammalian cell membranes. Considerable expansion of negatively charged monolayers occurred at 10 and 30 mol% TRP3, especially at low surface pressure. Moreover, a difference was observed between PA and PG, demonstrating that the interaction, besides being modulated by electrostatic interactions, displays specificity with regard to headgroup, being more pronounced in the case of PG, present in large quantities in bacterial membranes. In previous studies, it was proposed that the peptide acts by a toroidal pore-like mechanism [1,2]. Considering the evidence from the literature that PG shows a propensity to form a positive curvature as do toroidal pores, the observation of TRP3's preference for the PG headgroup and the dramatic increase in area promoted by this interaction represent further support for the toroidal pore mechanism of action proposed for TRP3. The fabrication of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of synthetic polymers allows the control of molecular architecture in order to optimize physical properties. In this paper, the surface chemistry of a quinoline-fluorene based copolymer spread on the air-water interface is investigated. Surface pressure-area isotherms as well as Polarization-Modulation Infrared Reflection-Absorption Spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) were employed to characterize the films, which could be transferred to solid supports by the LB technique. Atomic force microscopy as well as UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies have shown a regular deposition of the polymers, and the luminescence properties could be controlled with the number of layers deposited on the solid support. As a result, the photoluminescence of the LB films was considerably higher than that observed for the spin coated film, and the maximum emission peak was shifted to higher energies, which is attributed to the molecular-level interactions within the layer-ordered structure of the LB film. The luminescence response would possibly be tuned to approach the highest level, which allows the films to be employed in future applications in efficient optical devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Preserving the enzyme structure in solid films is key for producing various bioelectronic devices, including biosensors, which has normally been performed with nanostructured films that allow for control of molecular architectures. In this paper, we investigate the adsorption of uricase onto Langmuir monolayers of stearic acid (SA), and their transfer to solid supports as Langmuir Blodgett (LB) films. Structuring of the enzyme in beta-sheets was preserved in the form of 1-layer LB film, which was corroborated with a higher catalytic activity than for other uricase-containing LB film architectures where the beta-sheets structuring was not preserved. The optimized architecture was also used to detect uric acid within a range covering typical concentrations in the human blood. The approach presented here not only allows for an optimized catalytic activity toward uric acid but also permits one to explain why some film architectures exhibit a superior performance. The synthesis, characterization and formation of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB)films for the luminescent [(C12H25)(2)(CH3)(2)N][Eu(tta)(4)] complex, where [(C12H25)(2)(CH3)(2)](N+) is didodecyldimethylammonium and the tta ligand is thenoyltrifluoroacetone, are reported. The coordination of tta ligands to the Eu3+ ion was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy and the emission spectrum comprised bands corresponding to D-5(0) -> F-7(0-4) transitions. The lifetime (tau) from the emission state (D-5(0))was 0.41 ms, measured by monitoring the hypersensitive D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition, with the curve being fitted with a first-order exponential function. The surface pressure-area isotherm indicated that the anionic complex may form condensed structures at the air-water interface due to the amphiphilic properties of the counter ion and the beta-diketone ligand. Y-type LB films of [(C12H25)(2)(CH3)(2)N][Eu(tta)(4)] were deposited on quartz substrates, with preserved luminescence and a band assigned to the D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. The molecular arrangement at the air/water interface and the preserved luminescence in LB films are consistent with theoretical predictions using a semi-empirical Sparkle/AM1 calculation method for the molecule in vacuum. These tools were used for the first time to predict the behavior of organized films.
