Background The gut and immune system form a complex integrated structure that has evolved to provide effective digestion and defence against ingested toxins and pathogenic bacteria. However, great variation exists in what is considered normal healthy gut and immune function. Thus, whilst it is possible to measure many aspects of digestion and immunity, it is more difficult to interpret the benefits to individuals of variation within what is considered to be a normal range. Nevertheless, it is important to set standards for optimal function for use both by the consumer, industry and those concerned with the public health. The digestive tract is most frequently the object of functional and health claims and a large market already exists for gut-functional foods worldwide. Aim To define normal function of the gut and immune system and describe available methods of measuring it. Results We have defined normal bowel habit and transit time, identified their role as risk factors for disease and how they may be measured. Similarly, we have tried to define what is a healthy gut flora in terms of the dominant genera and their metabolism and listed the many, varied and novel methods for determining these parameters. It has proved less easy to provide boundaries for what constitutes optimal or improved gastric emptying, gut motility, nutrient and water absorption and the function of organs such as the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The many tests of these functions are described. We have discussed gastrointestinal well being. Sensations arising from the gut can be both pleasant and unpleasant. However, the characteristics of well being are ill defined and merge imperceptibly from acceptable to unacceptable, a state that is subjective. Nevertheless, we feel this is an important area for future work and method development. The immune system is even more difficult to make quantitative judgements about. When it is defective, then clinical problems ensure, but this is an uncommon state. The innate and adaptive immune systems work synergistically together and comprise many cellular and humoral factors. The adaptive system is extremely sophisticated and between the two arms of immunity there is great redundancy, which provides robust defences. New aspects of immune function are discovered regularly. It is not clear whether immune function can be "improved". Measuring aspects of immune function is possible but there is no one test that will define either the status or functional capacity of the immune system. Human studies are often limited by the ability to sample only blood or secretions such as saliva but it should be remembered that only 2% of lymphocytes circulate at any given time, which limits interpretation of data. We recommend assessing the functional capacity of the immune system by: measuring specific cell functions ex vivo, measuring in vivo responses to challenge, e. g. change in antibody in blood or response to antigens, determining the incidence and severity of infection in target populations during naturally occurring episodes or in response to attenuated pathogens.

The very first numerical models which were developed more than 20 years ago were drastic simplifications of the real atmosphere and they were mostly restricted to describe adiabatic processes. For prediction of a day or two of the mid tropospheric flow these models often gave reasonable results but the result deteriorated quickly when the prediction was extended further in time. The prediction of the surface flow was unsatisfactory even for short predictions. It was evident that both the energy generating processes as well as the dissipative processes have to be included in numerical models in order to predict the weather patterns in the lower part of the atmosphere and to predict the atmosphere in general beyond a day or two. Present-day computers make it possible to attack the weather forecasting problem in a more comprehensive and complete way and substantial efforts have been made during the last decade in particular to incorporate the non-adiabatic processes in numerical prediction models. The physics of radiational transfer, condensation of moisture, turbulent transfer of heat, momentum and moisture and the dissipation of kinetic energy are the most important processes associated with the formation of energy sources and sinks in the atmosphere and these have to be incorporated in numerical prediction models extended over more than a few days. The mechanisms of these processes are mainly related to small scale disturbances in space and time or even molecular processes. It is therefore one of the basic characteristics of numerical models that these small scale disturbances cannot be included in an explicit way. The reason for this is the discretization of the model's atmosphere by a finite difference grid or the use of a Galerkin or spectral function representation. The second reason why we cannot explicitly introduce these processes into a numerical model is due to the fact that some physical processes necessary to describe them (such as the local buoyance) are a priori eliminated by the constraints of hydrostatic adjustment. Even if this physical constraint can be relaxed by making the models non-hydrostatic the scale problem is virtually impossible to solve and for the foreseeable future we have to try to incorporate the ensemble or gross effect of these physical processes on the large scale synoptic flow. The formulation of the ensemble effect in terms of grid-scale variables (the parameters of the large-scale flow) is called 'parameterization'. For short range prediction of the synoptic flow at middle and high latitudes, very simple parameterization has proven to be rather successful.

We undertook a study to investigate the views of both students and staff in our department towards assessment in mathematics, as a precursor to considering increasing the diversity of assessment types. In a survey and focus group there was reasonable agreement amongst the students with regards major themes such as mode of assessment. However, this level of agreement was not seen amongst the staff, where discussions regarding diversity in mathematics assessment definitely revealed a difference of opinion. As a consequence, we feel that the greatest barriers to increasing diversity may be with staff, and so more efforts are needed to communicate to staff the advantages and disadvantages, in order to give them greater confidence in trying a range of assessment types.

During his lifetime, Sir Bernard Spilsbury was referred to as the ‘‘father of forensic medicine.’’ He became a household name as a result of several famous cases. Several articles have been written about his life and work, but an objective assessment has proved difficult because of the lack of available material that Spilsbury himself produced. His main legacy has been a series of case cards, but for many years these were unavailable to the researcher. In 2008, a collection of some 4000 of Spilsbury’s case cards was bought by The Wellcome Library in London and therefore entered the public domain. In this article, we report our study of 650 of these cards. We discuss trends in Spilsbury’s work and several specific cases in more detail. These cards allow an objective view to be taken of Spilsbury’s everyday work, and we feel that some reappraisal of his legacy is now timely

Aims: Over the past decade in particular, formal linguistic work within L3 acquisition has concentrated on hypothesizing and empirically determining the source of transfer from previous languages—L1, L2 or both—in L3 grammatical representations. In view of the progressive concern with more advanced stages, we aim to show that focusing on L3 initial stages should be one continued priority of the field, even—or especially—if the field is ready to shift towards modeling L3 development and ultimate attainment. Approach: We argue that L3 learnability is significantly impacted by initial stages transfer, as such forms the basis of the initial L3 interlanguage. To illustrate our point, the insights from studies using initial and intermediary stages L3 data are discussed in light of developmental predictions that derive from the initial stages models. Conclusions: Despite a shared desire to understand the process of L3 acquisition in whole, inclusive of offering developmental L3 theories, we argue that the field does not yet have—although is ever closer to—the data basis needed to effectively do so. Originality: This article seeks to convince the readership for the need of conservatism in L3 acquisition theory building, whereby offering a framework on how and why we can most effectively build on the accumulated knowledge of the L3 initial stages in order to make significant, steady progress. Significance: The arguments exposed here are meant to provide an epistemological base for a tenable framework of formal approaches to L3 interlanguage development and, eventually, ultimate attainment.

This paper considers the stability of explicit, implicit and Crank-Nicolson schemes for the one-dimensional heat equation on a staggered grid. Furthemore, we consider the cases when both explicit and implicit approximations of the boundary conditions arc employed. Why we choose to do this is clearly motivated and arises front solving fluid flow equations with free surfaces when the Reynolds number can be very small. in at least parts of the spatial domain. A comprehensive stability analysis is supplied: a novel result is the precise stability restriction on the Crank-Nicolson method when the boundary conditions are approximated explicitly, that is, at t =n delta t rather than t = (n + 1)delta t. The two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations were then solved by a marker and cell approach for two simple problems that had analytic solutions. It was found that the stability results provided in this paper were qualitatively very similar. thereby providing insight as to why a Crank-Nicolson approximation of the momentum equations is only conditionally, stable. This thesis contributes to the heuristic optimization of the p-median problem and Swedish population redistribution. The p-median model is the most representative model in the location analysis. When facilities are located to a population geographically distributed in Q demand points, the p-median model systematically considers all the demand points such that each demand point will have an effect on the decision of the location. However, a series of questions arise. How do we measure the distances? Does the number of facilities to be located have a strong impact on the result? What scale of the network is suitable? How good is our solution? We have scrutinized a lot of issues like those. The reason why we are interested in those questions is that there are a lot of uncertainties in the solutions. We cannot guarantee our solution is good enough for making decisions. The technique of heuristic optimization is formulated in the thesis. Swedish population redistribution is examined by a spatio-temporal covariance model. A descriptive analysis is not always enough to describe the moving effects from the neighbouring population. A correlation or a covariance analysis is more explicit to show the tendencies. Similarly, the optimization technique of the parameter estimation is required and is executed in the frame of statistical modeling.

From watching reality shows like A Wedding Story on TLC, I have learned that planning a wedding is stressful, kills friendships, and is generally not fun. In my opinion, I think it’s crazy. So why do people do this? What is the allure of this madness? In addition to the general insanity of weddings, the institute of marriage has been shown to be deeply flawed and quite unequal, but we are still tuning in to watch Engaged & Underage and Perfect Proposal. The fantasy shows that we watch and the glossy magazines we read seem to cover up the fact that the institution of marriage has problems. I want to find out why we are obsessed with getting married, even though many of us won’t actually carry through with the event or will end our marriages in divorce. Is it just the pageantry? The attention one receives as a bride and a new wife? To me, the huge attention paid to marriage in the media these days brings out some really interesting questions.

Sociology, in concerning itself with methodology and cultural determinism,may have overlooked the value of human experience in determining social action. We feel that the structural-functionalist point of view is not mutually exclusive with that of symbolic interaction theory. The field of collective behavior has not adequately explained a certain incidence of human activity called Transcendental Meditation. This paper will define Transcendental Meditation in sociological terms and explore its growth in terms of structural-functionalism,as well as in terms of the symbol-making faculty of human experience. In the first chapter, the author will state his biases and background as well as the problem and purpose of the paper. In the second chapter, Transcendental Meditation will be defined through an explanation of its concepts in sociological terms. A view of the TM program will also be reported. Following this in the third chapter, the origins of TM will be discussed~showing its basis to be in a tradition of Indian gurus and following its development in the United states until the present. The history of TM will proceed through biography of leading figures, with special mention of innovations in the TM institution of teaching and events in the growth of the 'movement' of TOO that are of key importance. Having set down the history of TM, in the fourth chapter we will discuss TM in terms of various sociological models. We will try to identify TM as either a social movement; a charismatic organization or a bureaucracy. In the fifth chapter we will look more closely at the structure of the organization that teaches TM in regard to its own functioning; that is, compliance, communication, socialization and recruitment, and also in regard to its relationship with national institutions, such as military, industry, religion, and government. Finally, we will explore TM in terms of individual and group goals and offer an explanation defining the growth of TM. Throughout-the paper, sociological perspectives will be applied to phenomena that exist in the society today. It is not within the scope of this paper to verify all the sociological implications and appraisals offered. It is hoped that this will not invalidate the ensuing discussion. It is also hoped that this paper will expand the horizons of sociology and offer some direction in future studies of collective behavior. If this is accomplished, the author will be gratified and indebted to his teachers. If not the author takes full responsibility. Esta tese busca discutir problemas relacionados às finanças públicas municipais no país. Um aprimoramento de nosso federalismo fiscal, com maior descentralização de recursos e implementação de regras de transferências federativas com maiores incentivos pró-eficiência – aumentando os incentivos pró-obtenção de melhores resultados sociais por parte das unidades subfederadas – pode se revelar instrumento importante na melhoria de nossas condições sociais. Para isto, dividiu-se esta tese em quatro partes distintas. No primeiro capítulo, discutem-se os impactos das receitas petrolíferas sobre as finanças públicas municipais. As mudanças legais ocorridas no país na década de noventa do último século - relativas ao setor petrolífero - levaram a crescente (e concentrada) transferência de recursos do setor para os estados e municípios brasileiros. A forte sensação que estes estariam sendo desperdiçados de alguma forma vem suscitando discussões sobre a necessidade de se reformular sua distribuição. As recentes descobertas de megacampos petrolíferos no pré-sal do litoral brasileiro somente intensificaram este processo. Buscou-se identificar os efeitos destas transferências sobre as variáveis fiscais municipais no país. Detectou-se que não ocorreu substituição tributária, ou seja, estes recursos não diminuíram o esforço arrecadatório dos municípios. Em compensação, tanto os recursos cuja distribuição é bem mais concentrada (referentes aos royalties excedentes) quanto aqueles mais bem-distribuídos (referentes aos royalties originais) levaram as prefeituras a aumentar seus gastos correntes (piorando sua composição do ponto de vista social) e diminuir seus investimentos. O contrário parece ocorrer com os recursos cuja distribuição se dá de forma intermediária (os royalties referentes às participações especiais). No segundo capítulo, discute-se o impacto das receitas petrolíferas sobre a proficiência dos alunos até a quarta série primária das escolas públicas municipais. As receitas petrolíferas – agregadas ou não – não se mostraram estatisticamente significativas na explicação do desempenho observado pelos alunos da quarta série primária das escolas municipais em português ou matemática. Este resultado, entretanto, deve ser olhado com cautela, uma vez que não é trivial identificar como (e o tempo necessário) estes efeitos seriam gerados. Entretanto, diferentes fontes de receitas municipais impactariam de forma diferenciada as proficiências observadas nos testes de português e matemática, explicitando a necessidade de se entender melhor estas diferenças para se desenhar mecanismo mais eficiente de repasse de recursos constitucionais aos municípios. No terceiro capítulo, estudam-se os impactos das emancipações municipais ocorridas na década de 90 sobre o bem-estar das populações locais. Devido à Constituição Federal de 1988, o número de municípios no Brasil multiplicou-se fortemente na década de 90 do último século. Mais de mil municípios foram criados em todo o país, fazendo seu número ultrapassar a casa dos 5.500. Este processo tem sido interpretado de forma bastante negativa. Baseado em evidências anedóticas, se pressupõe que os atores políticos locais o utilizaram para se apropriar de maior parcela dos recursos transferidos de outros níveis governamentais. Entretanto, nenhum esforço mais sistemático foi realizado buscando calcular, de maneira efetiva, os resultados sociais líquidos deste processo. É isto que se busca fazer aqui, utilizando dados sobre os municípios mineiros - cujo número passa de 723 em 1991 para 853 em 2000. Foram detectados impactos positivos relacionados a diversas variáveis educacionais e de saúde. Ao mesmo tempo, o contrário ocorreu com os indicadores de pobreza e indigência. Este resultado mostra que o movimento observado de emancipação municipal talvez tenha sido bastante benéfico, sinalizando para a existência de mercados políticos eficientes nestas localidades, o que indicaria a necessidade de se manter uma maior autonomia local relativa a processos de emancipação de distritos. Por fim, no quarto capítulo, analisam-se os impactos de lei (implementada em Minas Gerais) que buscou aumentar os incentivos pró-eficiência das prefeituras municipais a partir das transferências federativas. Buscando melhorar as condições de vida dos municípios mineiros, o governo estadual mineiro instituiu, em 1995, a lei 12.040, conhecida como Lei Robin Hood. Esta permitia que 25% dos recursos de ICMS a serem distribuídos aos municípios mineiros se dessem sobre resultados observáveis em diversas áreas tais como saúde, educação, conservação ecológica, entre outras. Ou seja, esta instituía, em relação a estas transferências, um contrato de alto poder com os municípios relacionados às políticas públicas implementadas. O estudo destas transferências (relativas à educação e saúde) mostrou resultados dúbios. Resultados positivos relativos à educação e à saúde parecem ocorrer em todo o estado, mas os incentivos dados poderiam ser bem maiores - faz-se necessário um refinamento das regras da partilha destas transferências. Dada a relativa escassez deste tipo de contrato em transferências federativas, seja no Brasil, seja no restante do mundo, este resultado aponta a necessidade de utilização de instrumentos de maior poder nas relações federativas, buscando incrementar as condições de vida locais.

Este trabalho procura elucidar alguns conceitos teóricos de identidade, como é entendida por diferentes autores, como nós a interpretamos e como o processo educacional influencia o desenvolvimento da identidade dos adolescentes. Para isso recorremos ao fenômeno da identificação, aos conflitos intra-psíquicos, particularmente no período da adolescência, e aos vínculos de integração espacial, temporal e social. Consideramos a identidade estruturada por três níveis fundamentais: pelas estruturas mais desenvolvidas da personalidade, caracterizada pela relação interpessoal, baseada nos mecanismos de projeção e introjeção; pelos mecanismos de identificação projetiva-introjetiva e pela persistência da fusão ou estrutura sincicial primitiva que caracteriza a sociabilidade sincrética. Partimos da concepção de identificação como a forma mais primitiva de ligação afetiva. Tomamos a conquista da identidade corporal e sexual como a base das demais identidades parciais. A formação da identidade como um todo, que pressupõe uma crise na adolescência, baseia-se na problemática mais específica da formação de uma identidade sexual. Enquanto a identificação se opera através de introjeções, a identidade resulta da oposição de identificações anteriores. O processo é dialético. Somos de opinião que a identidade é formada por processos eminentemente sociais. Uma vez formada, é mantida, modificada ou mesmo remodelada pelas relações sociais. Nossa preocupação centralizou-se no processo de formação de identidade, considerado em estreita relação çom a família, a escola e a sociedade e em contínua interaçao professor-aluno, ensino-aprendizagem. Tentamos detectar as influências da educação sistematizadas no processo de formação da identidade e em especial visualizar o papel do professor no referido processo, através de pesquisa de campo. Para isso elaboramos um questionário composto de duas partes. A primeira contendo dados de identificação do aluno, da família e da escola. A segunda, composta de 40 perguntas consideradas, inferencialmente, como indicadores dos vínculos de integração espacial, temporal e social. Os sujeitos de nossa pesquisa constituiram-se de 176 alunos, na faixa etária de 14 anos, masculinos e femininos, de 5ª e 8ª series, do ensino de 1º grau das escolas da rede estadual de Divinopolis, M.G., em 1978. A análise dos dados obtidos evidenciou o desenvolvimento de nossos sujeitos em termos de identificação com os grupos primários, predominando a dependência em nível infantil.

Mudança de comportamento: eis um fenômeno que suscita dúvidas, polêmicas e toda sorte de questionamentos. Por que ele se dá, por que não se dá, como fazer para que ocorra, como compreendê-la quando se dá de forma autônoma - essas são perguntas presentes na prática de muitos profissionais e no dia a dia mesmo das pessoas. Algumas destas perguntas fazem parte deste estudo, que tem como objetivo examinar o processo de mudança de comportamento diante de uma situação problemática. Para isso,tomaremos como base teórica os pressupostos oferecidos pela epistemologia ecossistêmica de Bateson, visto que esta se apresenta como uma perspectiva fértil para a compreensão dos fenômenos ao encará-los sob um ponto de vista relacional. A dinâmica da mudança será investigada a partir de experiências de membros de grupos AA relatadas em entrevistas. A razão pela qual escolhemos falar do tema a que nos propomos através da situação específica do alcoolismo e daqueles que passam a frequentar o AA deve ser clarificada. Sendo a síndrome de dependência do álcool uma condição que traz problemas de grande gravidade àqueles que a apresentam, e sendo o AA uma forma de tratamento que tem se mostrado muito eficaz, ambos merecem ser investigados, pois podem trazer luz à compreensão do processo de mudança. E é a isto que nos propomos neste estudo. Mais que apresentar conclusões fechadas, desejamos abrir caminhos a questionamentos sobre a mudança, sobre o alcoolismo e a prática do AA, a qual parece oferecer uma sistemática para aquilo que a visão teórica ecossistêmica apresenta.

This paper studies the effects of generic drug’s entry on bidding behavior of drug suppliers in procurement auctions for pharmaceuticals, and the consequences on procurer’s price paid for drugs. Using an unique data set on procurement auctions for off-patent drugs organized by Brazilian public bodies, we surprisingly find no statistically difference between bids and prices paid for generic and branded drugs. On the other hand, some branded drug suppliers leave auctions in which there exists a supplier of generics, whereas the remaining ones lower their bidding price. These findings explain why we find that the presence of any supplier of generic drugs in a procurement auction reduces the price paid for pharmaceuticals by 7 percent. To overcome potential estimation bias due to generic’s entry endogeneity, we exploit variation in the number of days between drug’s patent expiration date and the tendering session. The two-stage estimations document the same pattern as the generalized least square estimations find. This evidence indicates that generic competition affects branded supplier’s behavior in public procurement auctions differently from other markets.

This thesis talks about the use of guided educational tools in play and playful in public schools in the Metropolitan Region of Natal (MRN), contributing to the teaching and students learning of basic education in the contents of portuguese and mathematics. We assume that the play is an activity / human need and therefore implies the proper development of children in physical, psychological, biological, cultural, social and historical aspects. We consider the mediation exercised by the teacher in the classroom, and the affection existing between teacher and student, sine qua non terms, so that the truth and fact of the process of teaching and learning occur. Thus, theoretically collaborated Paulo Freire, with his dialogical vision; Lev S. Vygotsky says that we learn and why we develop; Lev S. Vygotsky that states that we learn and for that we develop ourselves; Pierre Bourdieu and the concept of habitus, as something embedded and therefore procedural, and the cultural capital that needs to be fed and (re)meaning at school; Luiz Pereira, Bernard Lahire, Gilles Brougère and others brought their theoretical contributions. The empirical field of research was composed by the Municipal School Professor Ulysses de Góis, located in the neighborhood of Nova Descoberta in Natal, and the Municipal School José Horacio de Góis, located in the community of Guanduba, in São Gonçalo do Amarante, municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Natal (MRN). We used as methodology the collaborative-action-research as a possible of effective participation of the research subjects, imputing them a voice and performance in the process, and not considering them just observers. The results indicate the effectiveness of the pedagogical tools in play and playful to the learning of students, but that alone is not able to solve all the problems of the school, other referrals need to be secured, as the planning of the actions to be developed in the school and in the classroom, systematized pedagogical orienttion for faculty, family participation/involvement in the school life of students, among other actions that need to be weighted so that education fulfills its role and promote the emancipation of the subject, because in the freireana liberating perspective, "the reading of the world preced the lecture of the word"
