Habitus y cuerpo en Pierre Bourdieu. ¿Historia, naturaleza, política, arqueología, genealogía?

En las conclusiones de la Tesis de Maestría en Educación Corporal (UNLP), titulada "El concepto cuerpo en Pierre Bourdieu. Un análisis de sus usos, sus límites y sus potencialidades", se planteaba la necesidad de profundizar en una línea teórica escasamente explorada en la sociología bourdieuana: entender al habitus como la "historia hecha cuerpo" - y más aún como la "historia hecha naturaleza"- remite a comprender en última instancia una naturalización de las prácticas que obvia las matrices y los matices políticos. Esto es, este trabajo es con Bourdieu, pretendiendo erigir al concepto cuerpo como uno de los conceptos fundamentales de su proyecto teórico; y contra Bourdieu, procurando esgrimir que decir que lo social es el encuentro de dos historias -la "historia hecha cosa" (el campo) y la "historia hecha cuerpo" (habitus)- reproduce una eternización y naturalización de las prácticas, deviniendo éstas en límite, y no expresa el sentido potencial ni de los conceptos de habitus y campo ni de la noción, central para este trabajo, de cuerpo

Muscularity, the habitus and the social construction of gender: Towards a gender-relevant physical education

This paper begins to develop the concept of gender-relevant physical education, combining the work of Pierre Bourdieu and his notion of the habitus and feminist philosopher Iris Marion Young's analysis of feminine motility. It draws on data generated from a study of young people's articulation of the relationships between muscularity, physicality and gender. The social construction of the body has been of central importance to the construction of femininities and masculinities, and has formed an enduring meta-theme through much of the research on physical education and gender. We build on the young people's insights to argue that Bourdieu's notions of the habitus and the exchange of physical capital provide a useful means of conceptualizing issues of embodiment and gender in school physical education and sport. We conclude by sketching an outline of gender-relevant physical education as a process of interrupting the habitus.

Cost-benefit analyses for your group and yourself: The rationality of decision-making in conflict

Two studies in the context of English-French relations in Québec suggest that individuals who strongly identify with a group derive the individual-level costs and benefits that drive expectancy-value processes (rational decision-making) from group-level costs and benefits. In Study 1, high identifiers linked group- and individual-level outcomes of conflict choices whereas low identifiers did not. Group-level expectancy-value processes, in Study 2, mediated the relationship between social identity and perceptions that collective action benefits the individual actor and between social identity and intentions to act. These findings suggest the rational underpinnings of identity-driven political behavior, a relationship sometimes obscured in intergroup theory that focuses on cognitive processes of self-stereotyping. But the results also challenge the view that individuals' cost-benefit analyses are independent of identity processes. The findings suggest the importance of modeling the relationship of group and individual levels of expectancy-value processes as both hierarchical and contingent on social identity processes

Grumbling, voting, demonstrating, and rioting: ''Rationality'' and decision-making in intergroup conflict

An individual faced with intergroup conflict chooses A from a vast array of possible actions, ranging from grumbling among ingroup friends to voting and demonstrating to rioting and revolution. The present paper conceptualises these intergroup choices as rationally shaped by perceptions of the benefits and costs associated with the action (expectancy-value processes). However, in presenting a model of agentic normative influence, it is argued that in intergroup contexts group-level costs and benefits play a critical role in individuals' decision-making. In the context of English-French conflict in Quebec, in Canada, four studies provide evidence that group-level costs and benef influence individuals' decision-making in intergro conflict; that the individual level of analysis need mediate the group level of analysis; that group-level co and benefits mediate the relationship between soc identity and intentions to engage in collective action; a that perceptions of outgroup and ingroup norms for inte group behaviours are relatively invariant and predictal related to perceptions of the group- and individual-le, benefits and costs associated with individualistic vers collective actions. By modelling the relationship betwe group norms and group-level costs and benefits, soc psychologists may begin to address the processes th underlie identity-behaviour relationships in collecti action and intergroup conflict.

RELIGIÃO, CORPO E EMOÇÃO: EDUCAÇÃO DOS SENTIDOS E HABITUS DE CLASSE NA IGREJA COMUNIDADE DA GRAÇA NO ABC PAULISTA

O objeto de estudo desta pesquisa é a Comunidade da Graça, presente há dez anos em São Bernardo do Campo, região do ABC paulista. Analisa-se o lugar da emoção religiosa e sua relação com a educação dos sentidos nesta confraria protestante pentecostal formada majoritariamente por pessoas de classe média, como propiciadora da assimilação de um habitus e de um forte auto-controle individual evidenciando a eficácia do adestramento corporal pela via da religião. Imersa em uma realidade social de muitas mudanças que provocam reconfigurações das religiões, no tipo específico de pentecostalismo estudado nota-se que, na gestão dos bens simbólicos, o ingrediente emocional é o principal acessório a fim de responder às demandas coletivas e individuais deste público religioso. Se há alguns anos a centralidade cúltica do protestantismo pentecostal estava no ouvir a prédica e reviver a experiência do pentecostes cristão, hoje em dia o foco neste é a emoção que deve perpassar todo o culto. O mesmo ocorre nos dois espaços catequéticos privilegiados desta igreja, a saber, a reunião no templo chamada de Conhecendo as Escrituras e os encontros de grupos nos lares. Esta mudança se evidencia, também, nos corpos dos fiéis, pois estes se constróem e modelam-se à realidade social vigente e expressam as experiências vivenciadas neste contexto. A partir da observação dos cultos e reuniões catequéticas desta igreja, analisa-se neste trabalho o modo como a emoção religiosa é construída, difundida e reproduzida, levando-se em consideração as condições sociais e econômicas específicas do grupo religioso em questão.(AU)

Rationality as a barrier to peace:micro-evidence from Kosovo

Despite a significant expansion of the literature on conflicts and fragility of states, only a few systematic attempts have been made to link the theoretical literature on social conflicts to the available micro-level information about the people who are involved in these conflicts. We address this lacuna in the literature using a household-level data set from Kosovo. Our analysis suggests that it is individually rational for competing ethnic communities, Kosovar Albanians and Kosovar Serbs, to resist a quick agreement on a social contract to share the region's resources.
