INTRODUCTION: The development of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) has increased; this study aimed to assess the quality of CPGs for the management of Chagas disease. METHODS: Following a systematic search of the scientific literature, two reviewers assessed the eligible guidelines using the Appraisal of Guidelines Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II instrument. RESULTS: Five CPGs were included. The AGREE domains of scope/purpose, stakeholder involvement, and clarity of presentation were rated well, and the domains of applicability and editorial independence received poor ratings. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of CPGs for Chagas disease is poor, and significant work is required to develop high-quality guidelines.

Quadrature oscillators are key elements in modern radio frequency (RF) transceivers and very useful nowadays in wireless communications, since they can provide: low quadrature error, low phase-noise, and wide tuning range (useful to cover several bands). RC oscillators can be fully integrated without the need of external components (external high Q-inductors), optimizing area, cost, and power consumption. The conventional structure of ring oscillator offers poor frequency stability and phasenoise, low quality factor (Q), and besides being vulnerable to process, voltage and temperature (PVT) variations, its performance degrades as the frequency of operation increases. This thesis is devoted to quadrature oscillators and presents a detailed comparative study of ring oscillator and shift register (SR) approaches. It is shown that in SRs both phase-noise and phase error are reduced, while ring oscillators have the advantage of occupying less area and less consumption due to the reduced number of components in the circuit. Thus, although ring oscillators are more suitable for biomedical applications, SRs are more appropriate for wireless applications, especially when specification requirements are more stringent and demanding. The first architecture studied consists in a simple CMOS ring oscillator employing an odd number of static single-ended inverters as delay cells. Subsequently, the quadrature 4-stage ring oscillator concept is shown and post-layout simulations are presented. The 3 and 4-phase single-frequency local oscillator (LO) generators employing SRs are presented, the latter with 50% and 25% duty-cycles. The circuits operate at 600 MHz and 900 MHz, and were designed in a 130 nm standard CMOS technology with a voltage supply of 1.2 V.

Lithium-ion battery cathodes have been fabricated by screen-printing through the development of CLiFePO4 inks. It is shown that shear thinning polymer solutions in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) with Newtonian viscosity above 0.4 Pa s are the best binders for formulating a cathode paste with satisfactory film forming properties. The paste shows an elasticity of the order of 500 Pa and, after shear yielding, shows an apparent viscosity of the order of 3 Pa s for shear rates corresponding to those used during screen-printing. The screen-printed cathode produced with a thickness of 26 mm shows a homogeneous distribution of the active material, conductive additive and polymer binder. The total resistance and diffusion coefficient of the cathode are 450 V and 2.5 10 16cm2 s 1, respectively. The developed cathodes show an initial discharge capacity of 48.2 mAh g 1 at 5C and a discharge value of 39.8 mAh g 1 after 50 cycles. The capacity retention of 83% represents 23% of the theoretical value (charge and/or discharge process in twenty minutes), demonstrating the good performance of the battery. Thus, the developed C-LiFePO4 based inks allow to fabricate screen-printed cathodes suitable for printed lithium-ion batteries

L’augment del turisme experimentat des de principis dels anys 70 a l’illa de Menorca (Illes Balears, Espanya) ha provocat un impacte sobre les seves platges, el seu principal atractiu turístic. Molts d’aquests impactes s’incrementen durant la temporada alta, compresa entre els mesos de maig a octubre. L’objectiu principal d’aquest projecte és l’elaboració d’un sistema d’indicadors de pressió ambiental útils per a l’anàlisi de les platges. La zona objecte d’estudi de la prova-pilot, correspon a les platges del sud-oest de Menorca, aquestes cales són les que actualment es troben sotmeses a una major pressió. Es tracta de catorze platges tipificades en tres categories (A, B, C) segons les característiques del tipus d’espai on es troben situades. Són les platges de: Cala Degollador, Cala Blanca, Cala’n Bosch, Son Xoriguer, Son Saura-Es Banyul, Son Saura-Bellavista, Es Talaier, Cala Turqueta, Cala Macarelleta, Cala Macarella, Cala Galdana, Cala Mitjana, Cala Trebalúger i Cala Escorxada. Partint d’un treball bibliogràfic, s’ha realitzat una selecció de mig centenar d’indicadors potencials dels quals catorze han format part dels IPAPM’pp, mitjançant l’elaboració d’una anàlisi multicriteri. Per a cada un dels IPAPM’pp s’ha desenvolupat una metodologia amb les corresponents fitxes individuals descriptives per al seu seguiment temporal. En aquest primer estudi, l’indicador que presenta un nombre de valors no acceptables en una major proporció de platges, és l’indicador 3. Índex de valoració de les mesures de conservació del sistema natural, seguit de l’indicador 6. Superfície subsistema sorra per usuari. El 2006, les platges de tipologia A, presenten un major percentatge positiu de les variables dels indicadors. Les platges de tipologia B i C presenten un percentatge menor d’acceptabilitat dels valors dels indicadors.

Las capas de acoplamiento son un elemento clave en los dispositivos BAW CRF. El factor de acoplamiento K de estas capas permite el diseño de una determinada respuesta. Debido al limitado número de materiales con las que implementarlas, las soluciones que utilizan capas de λ/4 ofrecen un rango discreto de K. Por otra parte, el reflector de Bragg es un mecanismo de aislamiento mecánico entre el sustrato y la estructura BAW que está formado por capas alternas de alta y baja impedancia acústica de λ/4. El problema que presenta es la reducción del factor de calidad asociado a las pérdidas producida por las ondas shear. Este proyecto presenta un método para la obtención de un rango continuo de factores de acoplamiento y estudia la mejora del factor de calidad de las estructuras BAW con reflector de Bragg partiendo de dos materiales con alta y baja impedancia acústica.

El procés de fusió de dues o més imatges de la mateixa escena en una d'única i més gran és conegut com a Image Mosaicing. Un cop finalitzat el procés de construcció d'un mosaic, els límits entre les imatges són habitualment visibles, degut a imprecisions en els registres fotomètric i geomètric. L'Image Blending és l'etapa del procediment de mosaicing a la que aquests artefactes són minimitzats o suprimits. Existeixen diverses metodologies a la literatura que tracten aquests problemes, però la majoria es troben orientades a la creació de panorames terrestres, imatges artístiques d'alta resolució o altres aplicacions a les quals el posicionament de la càmera o l'adquisició de les imatges no són etapes rellevants. El treball amb imatges subaquàtiques presenta desafiaments importants, degut a la presència d'scattering (reflexions de partícules en suspensió) i atenuació de la llum i a condicions físiques extremes a milers de metres de profunditat, amb control limitat dels sistemes d'adquisició i la utilització de tecnologia d'alt cost. Imatges amb il·luminació artificial similar, sense llum global com la oferta pel sol, han de ser unides sense mostrar una unió perceptible. Les imatges adquirides a gran profunditat presenten una qualitat altament depenent de la profunditat, i la seva degradació amb aquest factor és molt rellevant. El principal objectiu del treball és presentar dels principals problemes de la imatge subaquàtica, seleccionar les estratègies més adequades i tractar tota la seqüència adquisició-procesament-visualització del procés. Els resultats obtinguts demostren que la solució desenvolupada, basada en una Estratègia de Selecció de Límit Òptim, Fusió en el Domini del Gradient a les regions comunes i Emfatització Adaptativa d'Imatges amb baix nivell de detall permet obtenir uns resultats amb una alta qualitat. També s'ha proposat una estratègia, amb possibilitat d'implementació paral·lela, que permet processar mosaics de kilòmetres d'extensió amb resolució de centímetres per píxel.

CHO is the most commonly used mammalian host for the generation of cell lines allowing for the production of high quality therapeutic proteins. The generation of such cell lines is a lengthy and resource-intensive process requiring extensive screening in order to isolate candidates with optimal characteristics, such as growth, stability and productivity. For this reason, the biotechnology industry invests much effort in attempts to optimize CHO expression systems in order to streamline and shorten the cell line selection process. Based on preliminary observations of a facilitated selection of CHO-GS cell lines expressing members of the IL-17 cytokine family, this study investigates the use of IL-17F as a novel enhancing factor for CHO cell line generation. Using two different CHO expression systems (exploiting GS and DHFR-based selection), we demonstrated that IL-17F expression caused a significant increase in the occurrence of colonies during the selection process. All colonies selected produced substantial amounts of IL-17F, suggesting that benefits were conferred, during selection, to those cells expressing the cytokine. Furthermore, transgene expression levels were significantly increased when the selection pressure was raised to a level that would not normally be permissive for colony selection (i.e. 100 |o.M MSX for the CHO-GS expression system or 1000 nM MTX for the CHO-DHFR system). Finally, IL-17F expression was also found to enhance the rate of appearance of clones during single cell subcloning in the absence of selection pressure. Overall, these benefits have the potential to allow a substantial reduction in the length of cell line generation while significantly increasing cell line productivity. Nevertheless, we found that the high IL-17F expression levels required to convey enhancing effects was a limitation when attempting to co-express IL-17F and a recombinant soluble protein of therapeutic interest from independent CMV promoters within the same expression vector. In order to understand and overcome this limitation, studies were designed to characterize the IL-17F enhancing effect at the molecular and cellular level. Regular supplementation of recombinant biologically-active IL-17F into the culture medium during cell line selection was not able to reproduce the enhancing effects of endogenous IL-17F expression. In addition, increased IL-17F expression correlated with increased CHO-GS selection transgene expression at the single cell level. This data suggested a possible effect of IL-17F on viral promoter activity or transgene mRNA stability. It also provided direct evidence that the cells expressing the highest amounts of IL-17F obtained the most benefit. Overall data obtained from these study implied that IL-17F may act through an intracellular mechanism, possibly exerted during secretion. We therefore initiated experiments designed to determine the specific compartment(s) within which IL-17F triggers its effect. This work has identified IL-17F as a potentially powerful tool to optimize the CHO cell line generation process. The characterization of this enhancing effect at the molecular level has given us several insights into overcoming the current limitations, thus paving the way for the development of a viable technology that can be exploited within the biotechnology industry. - La CHO est la cellule hôte de mammifere la plus couramment utilisée dans la création de lignée cellulaire produisant des protéines thérapeutiques de haute qualité. La génération de ces lignées cellulaires est un processus long et exigeant l'utilisation de techniques de sélection robustes afin d'isoler des candidats possédants les caractéristiques optimales de croissance, de productivité et de stabilité d'expression. Les industries biopharmaceutiques ont investi beaucoup d'efforts afin d'optimiser les systèmes d'expression CHO dans le but raccourcir la longueur du procédé de sélection de lignées cellulaires et aussi d'en augmenter l'efficacité. A partir d'observations préliminaires obtenues lors de la génération de lignées cellulaires CHO- GS exprimant une cytokine appartenant à la famille des IL-17, nous avons réalisé une étude portant sur l'utilisation de l'IL-17F humaine (IL-17F) comme nouveau facteur d'optimisation pour la génération de lignées cellulaires CHO. Nous avons démontré, en utilisant les deux systèmes de sélection et d'expression CHO couramment utilisés (le premier exploitant la GS et l'autre basée sur la DHFR), que l'expression de l'IL-17F permet une augmentation significative de la fréquence d'apparition de colonies durant le processus de sélection de lignées cellulaires. Les différentes colonies sélectionnées expriment des quantités substantielles d'IL-17F, suggérant un effet bénéfique lors de la sélection qui serait exclusivement conféré aux cellules exprimant la cytokine. En outre, le niveau d'expression du transgene se trouve significativement augmenté lorsque la pression de sélection est portée à un niveau habituellement trop élevé pour permettre la sélection de colonies (soit 100 |JM MSX pour le système d'expression CHO-GS ou 1000 nM MTX pour le système CHO- DHFR). Enfin, l'expression d'IL-17F permet également d'améliorer la vitesse d'apparition de clones pendant une étape de sous-clonage en l'absence de pression de sélection. L'ensemble de ces effets bénéfiques permettent une réduction substantielle de la durée de génération de lignées cellulaires tout en augmentant considérablement la productivité des lignées obtenues. Néanmoins, nous avons constaté que la nécessité d'exprimer des niveaux élevés d'IL-17F afin obtenir l'ensemble de ses effets bénéfiques devient une contrainte lors de l'utilisation d'un vecteur d'expression composé de deux promoteurs CMV indépendants pour la co-expression de la cytokine et d'une protéine soluble présentant un intérêt thérapeutique. Afin de mieux comprendre et de surmonter cette limitation, plusieurs études ont été effectuées dans le but de mieux caractériser l'effet de IL-17F au niveau subcellulaire. L'apport régulier en IL-17F recombinante et biologiquement active dans le milieu de culture lors de la sélection de lignées cellulaires ne permet pas de reproduire les effets bénéfiques observés par l'expression endogène d'IL-17F. En outre, nous avons constaté que, lors de l'utilisation du système CHO- GS, l'augmentation d'expression de 1TL-17F est corrélée à un accroissement de l'expression du marqueur de sélection au niveau cellulaire. Ces résultats suggèrent un possible effet d'IL- 17F sur l'activité des promoteurs viraux et ainsi fournissent une preuve directe que les cellules exprimant de haut niveau d'IL-17F sont celles qui en profitent le plus. L'ensemble de ces observations mettrait en avant que l'effet d'IL-17F se ferait selon un mécanisme intracellulaire. Nous avons donc étudié le(s) compartiment(s) spécifique(s) dans lequel IL-17F pourrait exercer son effet. Ce travail a permis de définir IL-17F comme un puissant outil pour l'optimisation des procédés de génération de lignées cellulaires CHO. La caractérisation de cette amélioration de l'effet au niveau moléculaire nous a donné plusieurs indications sur la manière de dépasser les limitations actuelles, ouvrant ainsi la voie au développement d'une technologie viable qui peut être exploitée pars l'industrie biotechnologique.

The European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (EUROCAT) network of population-based congenital anomaly registries is an important source of epidemiologic information on congenital anomalies in Europe covering live births, fetal deaths from 20 weeks gestation, and terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomaly. EUROCAT's policy is to strive for high-quality data, while ensuring consistency and transparency across all member registries. A set of 30 data quality indicators (DQIs) was developed to assess five key elements of data quality: completeness of case ascertainment, accuracy of diagnosis, completeness of information on EUROCAT variables, timeliness of data transmission, and availability of population denominator information. This article describes each of the individual DQIs and presents the output for each registry as well as the EUROCAT (unweighted) average, for 29 full member registries for 2004-2008. This information is also available on the EUROCAT website for previous years. The EUROCAT DQIs allow registries to evaluate their performance in relation to other registries and allows appropriate interpretations to be made of the data collected. The DQIs provide direction for improving data collection and ascertainment, and they allow annual assessment for monitoring continuous improvement. The DQI are constantly reviewed and refined to best document registry procedures and processes regarding data collection, to ensure appropriateness of DQI, and to ensure transparency so that the data collected can make a substantial and useful contribution to epidemiologic research on congenital anomalies.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiofrequency (RF) coil and parallel imaging technology on brain volume measurement consistency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In all, 103 whole-brain MRI volumes were acquired at a clinical 3T MRI, equipped with a 12- and 32-channel head coil, using the T1-weighted protocol as employed in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative study with parallel imaging accelerations ranging from 1 to 5. An experienced reader performed qualitative ratings of the images. For quantitative analysis, differences in composite width (CW, a measure of image similarity) and boundary shift integral (BSI, a measure of whole-brain atrophy) were calculated. RESULTS: Intra- and intersession comparisons of CW and BSI measures from scans with equal acceleration demonstrated excellent scan-rescan accuracy, even at the highest acceleration applied. Pairs-of-scans acquired with different accelerations exhibited poor scan-rescan consistency only when differences in the acceleration factor were maximized. A change in the coil hardware between compared scans was found to bias the BSI measure. CONCLUSION: The most important findings are that the accelerated acquisitions appear to be compatible with the assessment of high-quality quantitative information and that for highest scan-rescan accuracy in serial scans the acquisition protocol should be kept as consistent as possible over time. It gives me great pleasure to accept the invitation to address this conference on “Meeting the Challenges of Cultural Diversity in the Irish Healthcare Sector” which is being organised by the Irish Health Services Management Institute in partnership with the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism. The conference provides an important opportunity to develop our knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding cultural diversity in the health sector from the twin perspectives of patients and staff. Cultural diversity has over recent years become an increasingly visible aspect of Irish society bringing with it both opportunities and challenges. It holds out great possibilities for the enrichment of all who live in Ireland but it also challenges us to adapt creatively to the changes required to realise this potential and to ensure that the experience is a positive one for all concerned but particularly for those in the minority ethnic groups. In the last number of years in particular, the focus has tended to be on people coming to this country either as refugees, asylum seekers or economic migrants. Government figures estimate that as many as 340,000 immigrants are expected in the next six years. However ethnic and cultural diversity are not new phenomena in Ireland. Travellers have a long history as an indigenous minority group in Ireland with a strong culture and identity of their own. The changing experience and dynamics of their relationship with the wider society and its institutions over time can, I think, provide some valuable lessons for us as we seek to address the more numerous and complex issues of cultural diversity which have arisen for us in the last decade. Turning more specifically to the health sector which is the focus of this conference, culture and identity have particular relevance to health service policy and provision in that The first requirement is that we in the health service acknowledge cultural diversity and the differences in behaviours and in the less obvious areas of values and beliefs that this often implies. Only by acknowledging these differences in a respectful way and informing ourselves of them can we address them. Our equality legislation – The Employment Equality Act, 1998 and the Equal Status Act, 2000 – prohibits discrimination on nine grounds including race and membership of the Traveller community. The Equal Status Act prohibits discrimination on an individual basis in relation to the nine grounds while for groups it provides for the promotion of equality of opportunity. The Act applies to the provision of services including health services. I will speak first about cultural diversity in relation to the patient. In this respect it is worth mentioning that the recognition of cultural diversity and appropriate responses to it were issues which were strongly emphasised in the public consultation process which we held earlier this year in the context of developing National Anti-Poverty targets for the health sector and also our new national health strategy. Awareness and sensitivity training for staff is a key requirement for adapting to a culturally diverse patient population. The focus of this training should be the development of the knowledge and skills to provide services sensitive to cultural diversity. Such training can often be most effectively delivered in partnership with members of the minority groups themselves. I am aware that the Traveller community, for example, is involved in in-service training for health care workers. I am also aware that the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism has been involved in training with the Eastern Regional Health Authority. We need to have more such initiatives. A step beyond the sensitivity training for existing staff is the training of members of the minority communities themselves as workers in our health services. Again the Traveller community has set an example in this area with its Primary Health Care Project for Travellers. The Primary Health Care for Travellers Project was established in 1994 as a joint partnership initiative with the Eastern Health Board and Pavee Point, with ongoing technical assistance being provided from the Department of Community Health and General Practice, Trinity College, Dublin. This project was the first of its kind in the country and has facilitated The project included a training course which concentrated on skills development, capacity building and the empowerment of Travellers. This confidence and skill allowed the Community Health Workers to go out and conduct a baseline survey to identify and articulate Travellers’ health needs. This was the first time that Travellers were involved in this process; in the past their needs were assumed. The results of the survey were fed back to the community and they prioritised their needs and suggested changes to the health services which would facilitate their access and utilisation. Ongoing monitoring and data collection demonstrates a big improvement in levels of satisfaction and uptake and ulitisation of health services by Travellers in the pilot area. This Primary Health Care for Travellers initiative is being replicated in three other areas around the country and funding has been approved for a further 9 new projects. This pilot project was the recipient of a WHO 50th anniversary commemorative award in 1998. The project is developing as a model of good practice which could inspire further initiatives of this type for other minority groups. Access to information has been identified in numerous consultative processes as a key factor in enabling people to take a proactive approach to managing their own health and that of their families and in facilitating their access to health services. Honouring our commitment to equity in these areas requires that information is provided in culturally appropriate formats. The National Health Promotion Strategy 2000-2005, for example, recognises that there exists within our society many groups with different requirements which need to be identified and accommodated when planning and implementing health promotion interventions. These groups include Travellers, refugees and asylum seekers, people with intellectual, physical or sensory disability and the gay and lesbian community. The Strategy acknowledges the challenge involved in being sensitive to the potential differences in patterns of poor health among these different groups. The Strategic aim is to promote the physical, mental and social well-being of individuals from these groups. The objective of the Strategy on these issues are: While our long term aim may be to mainstream responses so that our health services is truly multicultural, we must recognise the need at this point in time for very specific focused responses particularly for groups with poor health status such as Travellers and also for refugees and asylum seekers. In the case of refugees and asylum seekers examples of targeted services are screening for communicable diseases – offered on a voluntary basis – and psychological support services for those who have suffered trauma before coming here. The two approaches of targeting and mainstreaming are not mutually exclusive. A combination of both is required at this point in time but the balance between them must be kept under constant review in the light of changing needs. A major requirement if we are to meet the challenge of cultural diversity is an appropriate data and research base. I think it is important that we build up our information and research data base in partnership with the minority groups themselves. We must establish what the health needs of diverse groups are; we must monitor uptake of services and how well we are responding to needs and we must monitor outcomes and health status. We must also examine the impact of the policies in other sectors on the health of minority groups. The National Health Information Strategy, currently being developed, and the recently published National Strategy for Health Research – Making Knowledge Work for Health provide important frameworks within which we can improve our data and research base. A culturally diverse health sector workforce – challenges and opportunities The Irish health service can benefit greatly from successful international recruitment. There has been a strong non-national representation amongst the medical profession for more than 30 years. More recently there have been significant increases in other categories of health service workers from overseas. The Department recognises the enormous value that overseas recruitment brings over a wide range of services and supports the development of effective and appropriate recruitment strategies in partnership with health service employers. These changes have made cultural diversity an important issue for all health service organisations. Diversity in the workplace is primarily about creating a culture that seeks, respects, values and harnesses difference. This includes all the differences that when added together make each person unique. So instead of the focus being on particular groups, diversity is about all of us. Change is not about helping “them” to join “us” but about critically looking at “us” and rooting out all aspects of our culture that inappropriately exclude people and prevent us from being inclusive in the way we relate to employees, potential employees and clients of the health service. International recruitment benefits consumers, Irish employees and the overseas personnel alike. Regardless of whether they are employed by the health service, members of minority groups will be clients of our service and consequently we need to be flexible in order to accommodate different cultural needs. For staff, we recognise that coming from other cultures can be a difficult transition. Consequently health service employers have made strong efforts to assist them during this period. Many organisations provide induction courses, religious facilities (such as prayer rooms) and help in finding suitable accommodation. The Health Service Employers Agency (HSEA) is developing an equal opportunities/diversity strategy and action plans as well as training programmes to support their implementation, to ensure that all health service employment policies and practices promote the equality/diversity agenda to continue the development of a culturally diverse health service. The management of this new environment is extremely important for the health service as it offers an opportunity to go beyond set legal requirements and to strive for an acceptance and nurturing of cultural differences. Workforce cultural diversity affords us the opportunity to learn from the working practices and perspectives of others by allowing personnel to present their ideas and experience through teamwork, partnership structures and other appropriate fora, leading to further improvement in the services we provide. It is important to ensure that both personnel units and line managers communicate directly with their staff and demonstrate by their actions that they intend to create an inclusive work place which doesn´t demand that minority staff fit. Contented, valued employees who feel that there is a place for them in the organisation will deliver a high quality health service. Your conference here today has two laudable aims – to heighten awareness and assist health care staff to work effectively with their colleagues from different cultural backgrounds and to gain a greater understanding of the diverse needs of patients from minority ethnic backgrounds. There is a synergy in these aims and in the tasks to which they give rise in the management of our health service. The creative adaptations required for one have the potential to feed into the other. I would like to commend both organisations which are hosting this conference for their initiative in making this event happen, particularly at this time – Racism in the Workplace Week. I look forward very much to hearing the outcome of your deliberations. Thank you.

BACKGROUND: The Internet is increasingly used as a source of information for mental health issues. The burden of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) may lead persons with diagnosed or undiagnosed OCD, and their relatives, to search for good quality information on the Web. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of Web-based information on English-language sites dealing with OCD and to compare the quality of websites found through a general and a medically specialized search engine. METHODS: Keywords related to OCD were entered into Google and OmniMedicalSearch. Websites were assessed on the basis of accountability, interactivity, readability, and content quality. The "Health on the Net" (HON) quality label and the Brief DISCERN scale score were used as possible content quality indicators. Of the 235 links identified, 53 websites were analyzed. RESULTS: The content quality of the OCD websites examined was relatively good. The use of a specialized search engine did not offer an advantage in finding websites with better content quality. A score ≥16 on the Brief DISCERN scale is associated with better content quality. CONCLUSION: This study shows the acceptability of the content quality of OCD websites. There is no advantage in searching for information with a specialized search engine rather than a general one. Practical implications: The Internet offers a number of high quality OCD websites. It remains critical, however, to have a provider-patient talk about the information found on the Web.

BACKGROUND: Shared Decision Making (SDM) is increasingly advocated as a model for medical decision making. However, there is still low use of SDM in clinical practice. High impact factor journals might represent an efficient way for its dissemination. We aimed to identify and characterize publication trends of SDM in 15 high impact medical journals. METHODS: We selected the 15 general and internal medicine journals with the highest impact factor publishing original articles, letters and editorials. We retrieved publications from 1996 to 2011 through the full-text search function on each journal website and abstracted bibliometric data. We included publications of any type containing the phrase "shared decision making" or five other variants in their abstract or full text. These were referred to as SDM publications. A polynomial Poisson regression model with logarithmic link function was used to assess the evolution across the period of the number of SDM publications according to publication characteristics. RESULTS: We identified 1285 SDM publications out of 229,179 publications in 15 journals from 1996 to 2011. The absolute number of SDM publications by journal ranged from 2 to 273 over 16 years. SDM publications increased both in absolute and relative numbers per year, from 46 (0.32% relative to all publications from the 15 journals) in 1996 to 165 (1.17%) in 2011. This growth was exponential (P < 0.01). We found fewer research publications (465, 36.2% of all SDM publications) than non-research publications, which included non-systematic reviews, letters, and editorials. The increase of research publications across time was linear. Full-text search retrieved ten times more SDM publications than a similar PubMed search (1285 vs. 119 respectively). CONCLUSION: This review in full-text showed that SDM publications increased exponentially in major medical journals from 1996 to 2011. This growth might reflect an increased dissemination of the SDM concept to the medical community.

To perform a climatic analysis of the annual UV index (UVI) variations in Catalonia, Spain (northeast of the Iberian Peninsula), a new simple parameterization scheme is presented based on a multilayer radiative transfer model. The parameterization performs fast UVI calculations for a wide range of cloudless and snow-free situations and can be applied anywhere. The following parameters are considered: solar zenith angle, total ozone column, altitude, aerosol optical depth, and single-scattering albedo. A sensitivity analysis is presented to justify this choice with special attention to aerosol information. Comparisons with the base model show good agreement, most of all for the most common cases, giving an absolute error within 0.2 in the UVI for a wide range of cases considered. Two tests are done to show the performance of the parameterization against UVI measurements. One uses data from a high-quality spectroradiometer from Lauder, New Zealand [45.04°S, 169.684°E, 370 m above mean sea level (MSL)], where there is a low presence of aerosols. The other uses data from a Robertson–Berger-type meter from Girona, Spain (41.97°N, 2.82°E, 100 m MSL), where there is more aerosol load and where it has been possible to study the effect of aerosol information on the model versus measurement comparison. The parameterization is applied to a climatic analysis of the annual UVI variation in Catalonia, showing the contributions of solar zenith angle, ozone, and aerosols. The NRS state data quality standards identify the policies, processes and materials that states and local programs should have in place to collect valid and reliable data for the National Reporting System (NRS). The Division of Adult Education (DAEL) within the Office of Vocational and Adult Education developed the standards to define the characteristics of high quality state and local data collection systems for the NRS. The standards provide an organized way for DAEL to understand the quality of NRS data collection within the states and also provide guidance to states on how to improve their systems. States are to complete this checklist, which incorporates the standards, with their annual NRS data submission to rate their level of implementation of the standards. The accompanying policy document describes DAEL’s requirements for state conformance to the standards and explains the use of the information from this checklist.
