The consumption of snack bars is based especially on the demand for practical and nutritious food. Coffee is highlighted for being appreciated and consumed worldwide, presenting elevated antioxidant activity, in addition to peculiar sensorial attributes. Therefore, it has great potential for use in many formulations. However, the success in the acceptance of a new product also derives from adequate marketing strategies. In this context, the present study aimed at evaluating the feasibility of introducing to the market a snack bar added with coffee, by means of sensorial acceptance and purchase intent of the consumers, in addition to identifying the best concept and the possible market segments. This work was a qualitative, by means of a focus group (content analysis), and quantitative research, by means of sensorial analysis and structures questionnaires (descriptive – frequency distribution, arithmetic mean, crosstabs and t test – and multivariate – cluster and discriminate analysis - statistical techniques). With the results, we showed that the main aspects considered by the consumers regarding the snack bar added with coffee. According to the qualitative evaluation, the consumer prefers packaging with matte colors ranging in the tones related to the coffee grain. The analysis of the quantitative data allows us to infer that the evaluations of the product regarding overall impression, purchase intent, preference and expectation before and after consuming the product are better for packaging containing the information “special coffee flavor – 100% arabic”. Regarding market segment, it was possible to conclude that, of the three extracted groups, the group of “healthy and conscious consumers” was the segment with higher potential for exploitation regarding purchase and consumption of the snack bar added with coffee.

Considering the worldwide consumption of coffee, it is natural that throughout the history many people have dedicated the research to markers that contribute somehow on gauging its quality. This research aimed to evaluate the biochemical performance of arabica coffee during storage. Coffee in beans (natural) and in parchment (pulped) dried in concrete terrace and in dryer with heated air were packed in jute bags and stored in not controlled environmental conditions. Enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase, esterase and lipoxygenase in coffee grains were evaluated at zero, three, six, nine and twelve months by means of electrophoresis. Independently of the drying method, the activity of isoenzymatic complexes highlighted deteriorative processes in stored grains of coffee. The treatments 60/40º C and 60º C used to reduce the water content imposed a greater stress condition, accelerated metabolism of natural coffee in the storage with decreased activity of defense mechanisms due to latent damage in these grains. Natural coffees are more sensible to high drying temperatures and its quality reduces faster than pulped coffee in the storage.

Arborization can benefit coffee plantations by reducing the wind speed and temperature variation in the crop. It is also possible that the incident radiation can affect the weed populations and reduce the need for their control. This study aimed at assessing the weeds population and distribution, in arabica coffee intercropped with three macadamia cultivars, six years after planting, in Dois Córregos, São Paulo State, Brazil. Treatments consisted of a 3x3+1 factorial scheme, i.e., coffee intercropped with three macadamia cultivars (HAES 816, IAC 4-20 and IAC 9-20) and three sampling positions of weeds in the intercropping (in the macadamia tree canopy projection, among the macadamia tree canopies projections and in the single rows), plus an additional treatment (sole coffee). The weeds incidence and control, as well as their phytosociological characterization, were evaluated. For coffee intercropped with macadamia, the weeds occurrence and number of species were smaller than for sole coffee. For the projection in the canopy and among canopies of macadamia trees, there was an average decrease of 82% in the occurrence of weeds, in comparison with the sole coffee. The IAC 9-20 cultivar was more efficient in reducing the occurrence of weeds, when intercropped with coffee, for presenting a taller canopy, with a larger diameter.

It is no longer unanimously in the CMC powder drinks, as in the past, xanthan gum, always seeking to develop more economic alternatives, such as guar gum. It is clear, therefore, it is of vital importance to understand thoroughly the operation of a particular product in different process conditions and with different materials so that we can develop and adapt both new processes and products to new market reality

O cólon tem sido explorado nas últimas décadas como sítio de liberação de fármacos. A goma gelana e a pectina são polissacarídeos hidrofílicos naturais promissores para a obtenção de sistemas de liberação cólon-específica de fármacos, uma vez que são degradados especificamente por enzimas produzidas pela microbiota deste órgão. Filmes poliméricos apresentam grande aplicação no revestimento de formas farmacêuticas sólidas e podem permitir o controle das taxas de liberação de fármacos e/ou seu direcionamento para um órgão específico. Além disso, modificações químicas como a reticulação iônica podem alterar propriedades físico-químicas como reduzir a hidrofilia do sistema. Neste trabalho foram obtidos e caracterizados filmes de goma gelana e pectina reticuladas ionicamente com cátion trivalente (Al3+). Os efeitos da concentração de polímeros, agente reticulante e plastificante (glicerol) utilizados na preparação das amostras foram avaliados a partir da caracterização das propriedades mecânicas, físicas e químicas dos filmes. A análise macroscópica revelou filmes flexíveis, homogêneos e translúcidos e a análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura mostrou que a reticulação contribuiu para a formação de filmes com superfícies rugosas. Os baixos valores de transmissão de vapor d'água obtidos indicam a possibilidade de uma importante proteção contra a umidade. A absorção de líquido pH-dependente dos filmes foi demonstrada e a menor absorção de líquido em meio ácido deve garantir uma proteção da forma farmacêutica, quando em contato com o meio gástrico. Os filmes se mostraram bastante mucoadesivos, o que deve favorecer a retenção da forma farmacêutica no sítio alvo e as características mecânicas se mostraram favoráveis para a elaboração de filmes para revestimento de formas farmacêuticas sólidas
