The application of automated design optimization to real-world, complex geometry problems is a significant challenge - especially if the topology is not known a priori like in turbine internal cooling. The long term goal of our work is to focus on an end-to-end integration of the whole CFD Process, from solid model through meshing, solving and post-processing to enable this type of design optimization to become viable & practical. In recent papers we have reported the integration of a Level Set based geometry kernel with an octree-based cut- Cartesian mesh generator, RANS flow solver, post-processing & geometry editing all within a single piece of software - and all implemented in parallel with commodity PC clusters as the target. The cut-cells which characterize the approach are eliminated by exporting a body-conformal mesh guided by the underpinning Level Set. This paper extends this work still further with a simple scoping study showing how the basic functionality can be scripted & automated and then used as the basis for automated optimization of a generic gas turbine cooling geometry. This paper describes two folded metamaterials based on the Miura-ori fold pattern. The structural mechanics of these metamaterials are dominated by the kinematics of the folding, which only depends on the geometry and therefore is scale-independent. First, a folded shell structure is introduced, where the fold pattern provides a negative Poisson's ratio for in-plane deformations and a positive Poisson's ratio for out-of-plane bending. Second, a cellular metamaterial is described based on a stacking of individual folded layers, where the folding kinematics are compatible between layers. Additional freedom in the design of the metamaterial can be achieved by varying the fold pattern within each layer.

Mathematical theorems in control theory are only of interest in so far as their assumptions relate to practical situations. The space of systems with transfer functions in ℋ∞, for example, has many advantages mathematically, but includes large classes of non-physical systems, and one must be careful in drawing inferences from results in that setting. Similarly, the graph topology has long been known to be the weakest, or coarsest, topology in which (1) feedback stability is a robust property (i.e. preserved in small neighbourhoods) and (2) the map from open-to-closed-loop transfer functions is continuous. However, it is not known whether continuity is a necessary part of this statement, or only required for the existing proofs. It is entirely possible that the answer depends on the underlying classes of systems used. The class of systems we concern ourselves with here is the set of systems that can be approximated, in the graph topology, by real rational transfer function matrices. That is, lumped parameter models, or those distributed systems for which it makes sense to use finite element methods. This is precisely the set of systems that have continuous frequency responses in the extended complex plane. For this class, we show that there is indeed a weaker topology; in which feedback stability is robust but for which the maps from open-to-closed-loop transfer functions are not necessarily continuous. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Cascode circuits are useful for driving normally-on wide-bandgap devices, but the switching process must be properly understood to optimise their design. Little detailed consideration has previously been given to this. This paper proposes an idealised mathematical description of the cascode switching process, which is used to show that the stray inductance between the two devices plays a critical role in switching. This idealised model is used to propose methods for optimising cascode performance in different applications. © 2013 IEEE.

A SPICE simulation model of a novel cascode switch that combines a high voltage normally-on silicon carbide (SiC) junction field effect transistor (JFET) with a low voltage enhancement-mode gallium nitride field effect transistor (eGaN FET) has been developed, with the aim of optimising cascode switching performance. The effect of gate resistance on stability and switching losses is investigated and optimum values chosen. The effects of stray inductance on cascode switching performance are considered and the benefits of low inductance packaging discussed. The use of a positive JFET gate bias in a cascode switch is shown to reduce switching losses as well as reducing on-state losses. The findings of the simulation are used to produce a list of priorities for the design and layout of wide-bandgap cascode switches, relevant to both SiC and GaN high voltage devices. © 2013 IEEE.

Self-assembled Si/Ge dot multilayers with small, uncorrelated dots fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy in the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode are studied by Raman scattering of folded longitudinal acoustic (FLA) modes. The FLA Raman spectra are analyzed and modeled with respect to mode frequencies and the spectral envelope of mode intensities. The deduced average superlattice properties are consistent with results from atomic force microscopy. The simple Rytov model used for Si/Ge layer structures reproduces very well the frequencies of the FLA modes up to 150 cm(-1). The nonlinearity of phonon dispersion curves in bulk Si for large momenta, however, becomes important for modeling the higher frequencies of observed FLA modes up to 22nd order. The effective dot layer width and an activation energy for thermal intermixing of 2.1+/-0.2 eV are determined from the spectral envelopes of FLA mode intensities of as-grown and annealed Si/Ge dot multilayers. Micromachined comb-drive electrostatic resonators with folded-cantilever beams were designed and fabricated. A combination of Rayleigh's method and finite-element analysis was used to calculate the resonant frequency drift as we adjusted the device geometry and material parameters. Three micromachined lateral resonant resonators with different beam widths were fabricated. Their resonant frequencies were experimentally measured to be 64.5,147.2, and 255.5kHz, respectively, which are in good agreement with the simulated resonant frequency. It is shown that an improved frequency performance could be obtained on the poly 3C-SiC based device structural material systems with high Young's modulus.
