The cleaning procedure consists of two-step-flashing: (i) cycles of low power flashes T similar to 1200 K) at an oxygen partial pressure of P(o2) = 6 x 10(-8) mbar, to remove the carbon from the surface, and (ii) a single high power flash (T similar to 2200 K), to remove the oxide layer. The removal of carbon from the surface through the chemical reaction with oxygen during low power flash cycles is monitored by thermal desorption spectroscopy. The exposure to O(2) leads to the oxidation of the W surface. Using a high power flash, the volatile W-oxides and the atomic oxygen are desorbed, leaving a clean crystal surface at the end of procedure. The method may also be used for cleaning other refractory metals like Mo, Re and It. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Blend films (free-standing) containing 20% in volume of polyaniline (PANI) in 80% of natural rubber (NR) were fabricated by casting in three different ways: (1) adding PANI-EB (emeraldine base) dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to the latex (NRL), (2) adding PANI-EB dissolved in in-cresol to NR dissolved in xylol (NRD), (3) overlaying the surface of a pure NR cast film with a PANI layer grown by in situ polymerization (NRO). All the films were immersed into HCl solution to achieve the primary doping (protonation) of PANI before the characterization. The main goal here was to investigate the elastomeric and electrical conductivity properties for each blend, which may be applied as pressure and deformation sensors in the future. The characterization was carried out by optical microscopy, dc conductivity, vibrational spectroscopy (infrared absorption and Raman scattering), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile stress-strain curves. The results suggest that the NRL blend is the most suitable in terms of mechanical and electrical properties required for applications in pressure and deformation sensors: a gain of conductivity without losing the elastomeric property of the rubber. Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivatives are well known for their applications in polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs). PPV derivatives are highly susceptible to photo-oxidation though, which is mainly caused by the scission of the vinyl double bond on the polymer backbone. In this work, we show that Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films are less degraded than cast films of a PPV derivative (OC1OC6-PPV). Both films had similar thickness (similar to 50 nm) to allow for a more realistic comparison. Degradation was monitored with UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopies. The results indicated that cast films were completely degraded in ca. 400 min, while LB took longer time, i.e. about four times the values for the cast films. The differences can be attributed to the more compact morphology in the LB than in the cast films. With a compact morphology the diffusion of oxygen in the LB film is hampered and this causes a delay in the degradation process. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electrochemical preparation described herein involved the electrocatalytic oxidation of sulfite on a platinum electrode modified with nanostructured copper salen (salen=N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato)) polymer films. The complex was prepared and electropolymerized at a platinum electrode in a 0.1 mol L-1 solution of tetrabutylammonium perchlorate in acetonitrile by cyclic voltammetry between 0 and 1.4V vs. SCE. After cycling the modified electrode in a 0.50 mol L-1 KCI solution, the estimated surface concentration was found to be equal to 2.2 x 10(-9) Mol cm(-2). This is a typical behavior of an electrode surface immobilized with a redox couple that can usually be considered as a reversible single-electron reduction/oxidation of the copper(II)/copper(III) couple. The potential peaks of the modified electrode in the electrolyte solution (aqueous) containing the different anions increase with the decrease of the ionic radius, demonstrating that the counter-ions influence the voltammetric behavior of the sensor. The potential peak was found to be linearly dependent upon the ratio [ionic charge]/[ionic radius]. The oxidation of the sulfite anion was performed at the platinum electrode at +0.9V vs. SCE. However, a significant decrease in the overpotential (+0.45V) was obtained while using the sensor, which minimized the effect of oxidizable interferences. A plot of the anodic current vs. the sulfite concentration for chronoamperometry (potential fixed = +0.45V) at the sensor was linear in the 4.0 x 10(-6) to 6.9 x 10(-5) mol L-1 concentration range and the concentration limit was 1.2 x 10(-6) mol L-1. The reaction order with respect to sulfite was determined by the slope of the logarithm of the current vs. the logarithm of the sulfite concentration. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ferroelectric thin films belong to a class of materials with great technological importance in optic fibers, micro-electromechanical systems, and microprocessors and computers memories. The (1-x)PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3(x)PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) thin films, with x=0, 0.1, 0.35 and 0.5, were prepared by Pechini's process and deposited by spin-coating on Si(100), Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) and quartz substrates. The goal of the present paper is to verify the thermal treatment influence on the perovskite phase formation, which is desirable for these applications. The phase formation was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The film's surface was characterized by atomic force microscopy to analyze the roughness and the homogeneity. The results of this study indicate that the optimum conditions for obtaining the perovskite phase using a Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate, were drying each deposited layer at 140 degreesC (heating plate), and a final thermal treatment at 600 degreesC for 3 h in a closed system with a lead-rich atmosphere. The growth of zinc hexacyanoferrate (ZnHCF) hybrid film on the surface of graphite-epoxy composite (GEC) electrodes was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. Surface morphology of the hybrid film was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy. The effect of the type of monovalent cations on the redox behaviour of hybrid film was also studied. This effect indicated that the radius of the hydrated cation mainly determines the ion permeability of the film. The electrochemical behavior of the substituted anilines (procaine and sulfamerazine) in 1 M KCl of the modified GEC electrode showed a decrease of the cathodic currents while increasing the concentration of these analytes. The developed sensor also showed excellent stability for long time usage, higher sensitivity and cost-effective fabrication.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from a ruthenium complex, mer-[RuCl3(dppb)(py)] (dppb = PPh2(CH2)(4)PPh2; py = pyridine) (Rupy), and from mixtures with varied amounts of polyaniline (PANi) were fabricated. Molecular-level interactions between the two components are investigated by surface potential, dc conductivity and Raman spectroscopy measurements, particularly for the mixed film with 10% of Rupy. For the latter, the better miscibility led to an interaction with Rupy inducing a decrease in the conducting state of PANi, as observed in the Raman spectra and conductivity measurement. The interaction causes the final film properties to depend on the concentration of Rupy, and this was exploited to produce a sensor array made up of sensing units consisting of 11-layer LB films from pure PANi, pure Rupy and mixtures with 10 and 30% of Rupy. It is shown that the combination of only four non-specific sensing units allows one to distinguish the basic tastes detected by biological systems, viz. saltiness, sweetness, sourness and bitterness, at the muM level. Pb1- xCaxTiO3 thin films with x = 0.24 composition were prepared by the polymeric precursor method on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. The surface morphology and crystal structure, and the ferroelectric and dielectric properties of the films were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films revealed their polycrystalline nature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness. The multilayer Pb1-xCaxTO3 thin films were granular in structure with a grain size of approximately 60-70 nm. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor were, respectively, 174 and 0.04 at a 1 kHz frequency. The 600-nm thick film showed a current density leakage in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2) in an electric field of about 51 kV/cm. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin films showed normal ferroelectric behavior. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the deposited films were 15 muC/cm(2) and 150 kV/cm, respectively. (C) 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

This work describes an efficient, fast, and reliable analytical methodology for mercury determination in urine samples using stripping chronopotentiometry at gold film electrodes. The samples were sonicated in the presence of concentrated HCl and H2O2 for 15 min in order to disrupt the organic ligands and release the mercury. Thirty samples can be treated over the optimized region of the ultrasonic bath. This sample preparation was enough to allow the accurate stripping chronopotentiometric determination of mercury in the treated samples. No background currents and no passivation of the gold film electrode due to the sample matrix were verified. The samples were also analyzed by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS) and good agreement between the results was verified. The analysis of NIST SRM 2670 (Toxic Metals in Freeze-Dried Urine) also validated the proposed electroanalytical method. Finally, this method was applied for mercury evaluation in urine of workers exposed to hospital waste incinerators. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lead zirconate titanate, Pb(Zr0.3Ti0.7)O-3 (PZT) thin films were prepared with success by the polymeric precursor method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the formation of the PZT perovskite phase. X-ray diffraction revealed that the film showed good crystallinity and no presence of secondary phases was identified. This indicates that the PZT thin films were crystallized in a single phase. PZT thin films showed a well-developed dense grain structure with uniform distribution, without the presence of rosette structure. The Raman spectra undoubtedly revealed these thin films in the tetragonal phase. For the thin films annealed at the 500-700 degreesC range, the vibration modes of the oxygen sublattice of the PZT perovskite phase were confirmed by FT-IR. The room temperature dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the PZT films, measured at 1 kHz were 646 and 0.090, respectively, for thin film with 365 nm thickness annealed at 700 degreesC for 2 h. A typical P-E hysteresis loop was observed and the measured values of P-s, P-r and E-c were 68 muC/cm(2), 44 muC/cm(2) and 123 kV/cm, respectively. The leakage current density was about 4.8 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) at 1.5 V. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pt-modified SnO2 electrodes were prepared onto titanium substrates in the form of thin films of similar to2 mum at different temperatures in the range from 200 to 400degreesC. Surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that Pt-SnO2 sol-gel layers are significantly rough and have a low porosity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies showed that the films consist of Pt nanoparticles with average size varying from about 5 to 10 nm, depending on the preparation temperature, and amorphous tin oxide. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to determine the superficial composition of the electrodes and demonstrated the presence of Sn4+ in all the samples. XPS spectra of the Pt 4f electrons showed the presence of Pt in the zero-valence state as well as in ionic forms. The general electrochemical behavior was characterized by cyclic voltammetry in 1 mol l(-1) HClO4 and the electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of formaldehyde was investigated by potential sweeps and chronoamperometry. The results obtained show that the Pt-SnO2/Ti system exhibits a significant catalytic activity for the oxidation of formaldehyde, with an onset potential below 0.1 V. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. This paper is aimed at addressing the differences observed in film properties when poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene) P(VDF-TrFE) films are fabricated using distinct methods. Samples were obtained either from casting a solution or by compression molding from a molten phase and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is shown that the main differences between melt-solidified and cast films arise from the thermal treatment inherent in the former samples.

Polycrystalline SrTiO3 thin films having a cubic perovskite structure were prepared at different temperatures by the polymeric precursor method on platinum-coated silicon substrate. Crystalline films with uniform composition and thickness were prepared by spin-coating and the post-deposition heat treatment was carried out at different temperatures. The film showed good structural, dielectric, and insulating properties, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs showed no occurrence of interdiffusion between the bottom electrode (platinum) and the film during post-annealing, indicating a stable interface between the SrTiO3 and the bottom electrode. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 250 and 0.01, respectively, for a 360 nm thick film annealed at 600 degreesC. The capacitance versus applied voltage characteristics showed that the capacitance was almost independent of the applied voltage. The I-V characteristics were ohmic in low fields and a Schottky emission and/or Poole-Frenkel emission were postulated in high fields. Room temperature leakage current density was found to be in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2) for a 360 nm thick film in an applied electric field of about 100 kV/cm. The charge storage density of 36 fC/mum(2) was obtained in an applied electric field of about 100 kV/cm. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work reports on the preparation of erbium and ytterbium co-doped SiO2:HfO2 single mode planar waveguides using the sol-gel method. Silica nanoparticles were prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate in basic media and the films were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical profilometry, M-lines spectroscopy based on prism coupling technique, X-ray diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The film thicknesses and the refractive indexes were adjusted in order to satisfy a future efficient coupling to single mode optical fiber. Films suitable for both weak and strong light confinement were prepared varying hafnia concentration into the silica matrix. The lifetime values of erbium I-4(13/2) state were measured in order to investigate the influence of clustering and hydroxyl groups on the fluorescence quantum efficiency of the I-4(13/2) level, responsible for the emission at 1.55 mu m attributed to the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition. The high lifetime values suggest the absence of erbium clusters and the elimination of hydroxyl groups by rapid thermal process. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
