The physic nut can be propagated asexually or sexually. Using cuttings have been earlier yield and more fidelity characteristics of the parent plant. However, there is less initial vegetative growth. The seeds from the plants have increased genetic variability, are more vigorous and begin production later. To get quality changes, the substrate is an important factor. With that the objective was to taste pre-germinated treatments and different substrate on seeds emergence and quality physic nut seedlings. The experimental design was completely randomized, in factorial scheme 6 x 3 (pre-germinated treatments x substrate), 18 treatments and 4 repetition, 8 seeds to each repetition. It was evaluated six pre-germination treatments: T1: witness (without treatments); T2: water immersion for 12 hours; T3: water immersion for 24 hours; T4: mechanical scarification; T5: mechanical scarification + water immersion for 12 hours; T6: mechanical scarification + water immersion for 24 hours, using as substrate: commercial, expanded vermiculite and sand washed. The mechanical scarification was realized opposite the micropyle using sandpaper n. 60. After the pre-germination treatments, the seeds were emergence in plastic cups (200mL) with substrates. We evaluated the characteristics: percentage, beginning and emergence speed index, mean length of plant, diameter of plant stem, SPAD index, fresh and dry shoot and root. The results showed that in seeds of Jatropha do not need pre-germinative treatments; and the use of commercial substrate showed seedling development.

The nutrition of the orchards is the major factor of productivity, being necessary to know the proper doses of fertilizers and their influence on fruit quality attributes for industrialization. This study evaluated the effects of different doses of nitrogen and potassium on the productivity of guava trees and also on the values of pH, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA) and pulp/kernel ratio of guavas. The experiment was conducted at Vista Alegre do Alto, SP in an irrigated 'Paluma'guava orchard, 7 years old, managed with pruning during three consecutive cycles of production. The soil of the area was dystrophic Ultisol. The experimental design was the randomized blocks, in factorial, with four nitrogen doses (0, 0.5, 1 and 2 kg of N plant(-1)) and four of potassium (0, 0.55, 1.1 and 2.2 kg of K2O plant(-1)), with three replications. Nitrogen fertilization increased productivity and the pH of the fruit, being explained by the quadratic polynomial regression models; reduced linearly the pulp/kernel ratio and do not influenced the SS and TA values. On the other hand, potassium fertilization and N x K interaction had no significant effects on productivity and the other characteristics evaluated.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the electrocardiography effects (ECG), sedation time and quality of recovery due to buprenorphine (G1) and butorphanol (G2) administration in dogs pretreated with acepromazine. Seven adult dogs were submitted to both protocols, with a thirty days interval between groups. G1 animals were premedicated with acepromazine (0.1 mg/kg) followed 10 minutes later with buprenorphine (0.005 mg/kg), both applied intravenously. The same procedure was performed for G2 employing butorphanol (0.3 mg/kg) instead of buprenorphine. The measurements of the variables heart rate (HR), duration and amplitude of P wave, P-R intervals (PR), QRS complex duration, R wave amplitude, Q-T intervals (QT) and R-R intervals (RR) were taken immediately before application of acepromazine (M0), 10 minute after administration of acepromazine (M10) and 10 minutes after opioids administration (M20). Serial measurements were carried out in 10 minute intervals after the administration of butorphanol or buprenorphine up to 60 minutes. Numeric data were submitted to Tukey Analysis (p < 0.05). The amplitude of P wave decreased 30 minutes after the administration of the butorphanol. Sedation time was longer in G1 (78 minutes) than G2 (72 minutes) and recovery was good in both groups. These results indicate that butorphanol or buprenorphine produced discreet alterations on ECG, which don´t contraindicate its clinical use.

The aim of this study was to compare the quality of clarifi ed juice and VHP (Very High Purity) sugar produced from “bisada” sugarcane and an early maturation variety, at the beginning of harvest. The experiment was conducted at Usina São Martinho S/A, Pradópolis,SP (Brazil). The process of juice clarifi cation and sugar production was conducted at the Laboratory of Technology of Sugar and Alcohol in the College of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (FCAV/UNESP), Jaboticabal (SP). The experimental design was randomized, and two varieties were used: SP83-2847 (“bisada” sugarcane) and RB855156 (early maturation), with twelve replications for technological analysis and four replications for sugar production. The clarifi cation process and the clarifi ed juice was evaluated in terms of settling rates, volume of sludge that formed, total soluble solids, pH, turbidity, total phenolic compounds, starch and color. The sugar was characterized regarding the percentage of apparent sugar, color, total phenolic compounds, starch, fi lterability, humidity and safety factor. It was verifi ed that the processing of the juice clarifi cation was not affected by the processing of the “bisada” sugarcane. However, the clarifi ed juice from the SP83-2847 variety had a more intense color and a higher total soluble solids value. The sugar produced from the “bisada” sugarcane presented similar quality to the early maturation variety. It was concluded that the processing of “bisada” sugarcane at the start of the harvest did not affect the juice clarifi cation and resulted in VHP sugar of a quality similar to that of the early maturation variety.
