This work describes the partial oxypropylation of filter paper cellulose fibers, employing two different basic catalyst, viz., potassium hydroxide and 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane, to activate the hydroxyl groups of the polysaccharide and thus provide the anionic initiation sites for the ""grafting-from"" polymerization of propylene oxide. The success of this chemical modification was assessed by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle measurements. The study of the role of the catalyst employed on the extent of the modification and on the mechanical properties of the ensuing composites, after hot pressing, showed that both the Bronsted and the Lewis base gave satisfactory results, without any marked difference.

The Mg-Ni metastable alloys (with amorphous or nanocrystalline structures) are promising candidates for anode application in nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries due to its large hydrogen absorbing capacity, low weight, availability, and relative low price. In spite of these interesting features, improvement on the cycle life performance must be achieved to allow its application in commercial products. In the present paper, the effect of mechanical coating of a Mg-50 at.% Ni alloy with Ni and Ni-5 at.% Al on the structure, powder morphology, and electrochemical properties is investigated. The coating additives, Mg-Ni alloy and resulting nanocomposites (i.e., Mg-Ni alloy + additive) were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The Mg-Ni alloy and nanocomposites were submitted to galvanostatic cycles of charge and discharge to evaluate their electrode performances. The mechanical coating with Ni and Ni-5% Al increased the maximum discharge capacity of the Mg-Ni alloy from of 221 to 257 and 273 mA h g(-1), respectively. Improvement on the cycle life performance was also achieved by mechanical coating.

Polymer films, deposited from acetylene and argon plasma mixtures, were bombarded with 150 keV He+ ions, varying the fluence, Phi, from 10(18) to 10(21) ions/m(2). Molecular structure and optical gap of the samples were investigated by infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopies, respectively. Two-point probe was employed to determine the electrical resistivity while hardness was measured by nanoindentation technique. It was verified modification of the molecular structure and composition of the films. There was loss of H and increment in the concentration of unsaturated carbon bonds with Phi. Optical gap and electrical resistivity decreased while hardness increased with Phi. Interpretation of these results is proposed in terms of chain crosslinking and unsaturation. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Background: Chemical modification of implant surface is typically associated with surface topographic alterations that may affect early osseointegration. This study investigates the effects of controlled surface alterations in early osseointegration in an animal model. Methods: Five implant surfaces were evaluated: 1) alumina-blasting, 2) biologic blasting, 3) plasma, 4) microblasted resorbable blasting media (microblasted RBM), and 5) alumina-blasting/acid-etched (AB/AE). Surface topography was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and optical interferometry, and chemical assessment by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The implants were placed in the radius of six dogs, remaining 2 and 4 weeks in vivo. After euthanization, specimens were torqued-to-interface failure and non-decalcified - processed for histomorphologic bone-implant contact, and bone area fraction-occupied evaluation. Statistical evaluation was performed by one-way analysis of variance (P < 0.05) and post hoc testing by the Tukey test. Results: The alumina-blasting surface presented the highest average surface roughness and mean root square of the surface values, the biologic blasting the lowest, and AB/AE an intermediate value. The remaining surfaces presented intermediate values between the biologic blasting and AB/AE. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra revealed calcium and phosphorus for the biologic blasting and microblasted RBM surfaces, and the highest oxygen levels for the plasma, microblasted RBM, and AB/AE surfaces. Significantly higher torque was observed at 2 weeks for the microblasted RBM surface (P < 0.04), but no differences existed between surfaces at 4 weeks (P > 0.74). No significant differences in bone-implant contact and bone area fraction-occupied values were observed at 2 and 4 weeks. Conclusion: The five surfaces were osteoconductive and resulted in high degrees of osseointegration and biomechanical fixation. We consider the modification of the Cahn-Hilliard equation when a time delay process through a memory function is taken into account. We then study the process of spinodal decomposition in fast phase transitions associated with a conserved order parameter. The introduced memory effect plays an important role to obtain a finite group velocity. Then, we discuss the constraint for the parameters to satisfy causality. The memory effect is seen to affect the dynamics of phase transition at short times and have the effect of delaying, in a significant way, the process of rapid growth of the order parameter that follows a quench into the spinodal region.

The magnetorefractive effect (MRE) has been used for the first time to study the magnetotransport properties of La1-xSrxMnO3 perovskite materials. A direct correlation between the MRE and colossal magnetoresistance was observed. Samples with x = 0-0.3 prepared using the homogeneous coprecipitation and the solid state reaction methods were studied, covering the range of insulating to metallic behaviour. The M RE probed both the magnetically induced modification of the scattering of Drude-like electrons and the magnetic dependence of a stretching vibration mode. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Sensitive immunologic techniques for the detection of alterations that occur in protein antigens were used to evaluate the immunogenicity of soybean glycinin after isolation, heat denaturation and pH alteration. The objective was to determine the effect of these agents on the immunogenic ability of this protein fraction. Immunologic assays performed on heat-denatured glycinin up to 80 degrees C in the presence of antinative glycinin serum demonstrated that glycinin retains its immunogenic properties. Above 90 degrees C this biological property begins to disappear, with protein insolubilization and epitope modification due to the conformational changes imposed by temperature. A reduction in immunogenicity also occurred when glycinin was taken to pH 2.0 (below its pi) and pH 11.00 (above its pi) and exposed to high temperatures in the presence of native antiglycinin serum. From these data one can conclude that, at extreme pH values, intramolecular reactions may occur which, in combination with the structural disorganization caused by high temperatures, may contribute to the reduction of immunogenicity.

We compare the effect of organic (Tiron (R)) and inorganic (Mn(11)) additives on the low temperature (< 600 degrees C) densification of the sol-gel dip-coated SnO2 films. The structural and compositional properties of the samples were investigated by X-ray reflectometry (XRR), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results suggest that the replacement of hydroxyl groups at the particle surface by Tiron (R) reduces the level of agglomeration of the sol, increasing the particles packing and the apparent density of the coatings. Undoped and Mn-doped films drawn from a Tiron (R) containing suspension show after firing at 500 degrees C a porosity reduction of 12 and 8.6%, respectively. The porosity decrease is less pronounced (4.3%) for the film without additives. Both XAS and XPS data show the presence of trivalent manganese. The formation of a non-homogeneous solid solution characterised by the presence of Mn(111) replacing tin atom near to the crystallite surface was evidenced by XAS. Additionally, XPS results reveal the presence of metallic Sn at the surface of films containing Tirono. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
