We describe a simple and efficient strategy to fabricate enzymatic devices based on the deposition of glucose oxidase on aligned and highly oriented CoNiMo metallic nanowires. CoNiMo nanowires with an average diameter of 200 nm and length of 50 mu m were electrodeposited on Au-covered alumina substrates via electrodeposition, using alumina membranes as templates. Enzyme-modified electrodes were fabricated via enzyme immobilization using a cross-linker. To minimize nonspecific reactions in the presence of interfering agents, a permselective membrane composed of poly(vinylsulfonic acid) and polyamidoamine dendrimer was deposited via electrostatic interaction. The formation of hydrogen peroxide as a product of the enzymatic reaction was monitored at low overpotential, 0.0 V (vs Ag/AgCl). The detection limit was estimated at 22 mu M under an applied potential of 0.0 V. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant determined from the Lineweaver-Burke plot was 2 mM.

In this paper we report here new considerations about the relationship between the mass and charge variations (m/z relationship) in underpotential deposition (UPD), bulk deposition and also in the H(2)Se formation reaction. Nanogravimetric experiments were able to show the adsorption of H(2)SeO(3) on the AuO surface prior to the voltammetric sweep and that, after the AuO reduction, 0.40 monolayer of H(2)SeO(3) remains adsorbed on the newly reduced Au surface, which was enough to gives rise to the UPD layer. The UPD results indicate that the maximum coverage with Se(ads) on polycrystalline gold surface corresponds to approximately 0.40 monolayer, in good agreement with charge density results. The cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrated that the amount of bulk Se obtained during the potential scan to approximately 2 Se monolayers, which was further confirmed by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) measurements that pointed out a mass variation corresponding of 3 monolayers of Se. In addition, the Se thin films were obtained by chronoamperometric experiments, where the Au electrode was polarized at +0.10V during different times in 1.0 M H(2)SO(4) + 1.0 mM SeO(2). The topologic aspects of the electrodeposits were observed in Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) measurements. Finally, in highly negative potential polarizations, the H(2)Se formation was analyzed by voltammetric and nanogravimetric measurements. These finding brings a new light on the selenium electrodeposition and point up to a proposed electrochemical model for molecule controlled surface engineering. (c) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. We report here the utilization of atomid layer deposition to passivate surface map states in mosoporous TiO2 nanoparticles for solid state dye sensitized solar cells based on 9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD). By depositing ZrO2 films with angstrom-level precision, coating the mesoporous TiO2 produces over a two-fold enhancement in short-circuit current density, as compared to a control device. Impedance spectroscopy measurements provide evidence that the ZrO2 coating reduces recombination lossed at the TiO2/spiro-OMeTAD interface and passivates localized surface states. Low-frequency negative capacitances, frequently observed in nanocomposite solar cells, have been associated with the surface-state mediated charge transfer from TiO2 to the spiro-OMeTAD.

Thin films were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition from titanium (IV) ethoxide (TEOT)-oxygen-helium mixtures. Actinometric optical emission spectroscopy was used to obtain the relative plasma concentrations of the species H, CH, O and CO as a function of the percentage of oxygen in the feed, R(ox). The concentrations of these species rise with increasing R(ox) and tend to fall for R(ox) greater than about 45%. As revealed by a strong decline in the emission intensity of the actinometer Ar as R(ox) was increased, the electron mean energy or density (or both) decreased as greater proportions of oxygen were fed to the chamber. This must tend to reduce gas-phase fragmentation of the monomer by plasma electrons. As the TEOT flow rate was fixed, however, and since the species H and CH do not contain oxygen, the rise in their plasma concentrations with increasing R(ox) is explained only by intermediate reactions involving oxygen or oxygen-containing species. Transmission infrared (IRS) and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies were employed to investigate film structure and composition. The presence of CH(2), CH(3), C=C, C-O and C=O groups was revealed by IRS. In addition, the presence of C-O and C=O groups was confirmed by XPS, which also revealed titanium in the +4 valence state. The Ti content of the films, however, was found to be much less than that of the monomer material itself. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ag-containing polyethyleneoxide (FEO)-like thin films have been deposited in Radio Frequency Glow Discharges fed with vapors of diethyleneglycol-dimethyl-ether and argon. Proper experimental conditions have been utilized in order to fragment the monomer in the glow and, at the same time, sputter Ag from the silver RF cathode of the reactor, in a way that polyethyleneoxide(PEO)-like coatings with embedded Ag clusters have been deposited at the ground electrode. The composition of the coatings has been investigated by means of different techniques; the plasma process has been investigated by means of Actinometric Optical Emission Spectroscopy. A correlation has been found between the amount of silver embedded in the coatings and that sputtered in the discharge, monitored by actinometry, that could eventually be utilized to control in situ the deposition process.

CCTO thin films were deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO 2/Si substrates using a chemical (polymeric precursor) and pressure method. The pressure effects on the CCTO thin films were evaluated by XRD, FEG-SEM and optical properties. Pressure films were found to be more homogeneous and dense than chemical deposition films. Pressure also leaded to an increase in the photoluminescence emission; it is suggested that the displacement of Ti in the titanate clusters, favors the charge transference from TiO 6 to [TiO 5V o z], TiO 5V o z] to [CaO 11V o z] and [TiO 5V o z] to [CuO 4] x. The low synthesis temperature used in the pressure method allows the deposition of films on less expensive substrates (i.e. glass, aluminum, polymer and others).

Aluminum acetylacetonate has been reported as a precursor for the deposition of alumina films using different approaches. In this work, alumina-containing films were prepared by plasma sputtering this compound, spread directly on the powered lowermost electrode of a reactor, while grounding the substrates mounted on the topmost electrode. Radiofrequency power (13.56 MHz) was used to excite the plasma from argon atmosphere at a working pressure of 11 Pa. The effect of the plasma excitation power on the properties of the resulting films was studied. Film thickness and hardness were measured by profilometry and nanoindentation, respectively. The molecular structure and chemical composition of the layers were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Surface micrographs, obtained by scanning electron microscopy, allowed the determination of the sample morphology. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction was employed to determine the structure of the films. Amorphous organic layers were deposited with thicknesses of up to 7 μm and hardness of around 1.0 GPa. The films were composed by aluminum, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, their proportions being strongly dependent on the power used to excite the plasma. A uniform surface was obtained for low-power depositions, but particulates and cracks appeared in the high-power prepared materials. The presence of different proportions of aluminum oxide in the coatings is ascribed to the different activations promoted in the metalorganic molecule once in the plasma phase. Alumina thin films have been obtained by resistive evaporation of Al layer, followed by thermal oxidation by means of annealing in appropriate atmosphere (air or O2-rich), with variation of annealing time and temperature. Optical and structural properties of the investigated films reveal that the temperature of 550 °C is responsible for reasonable oxidation, which is accelerated up to 8 times for O2-rich atmosphere. Results of surface electrical resistivity and Raman spectroscopy are in good agreement with these findings. Surprisingly, X-ray and Raman data suggest also the crystallization of Si nuclei at glass substrate-alumina interface, which would come from the soda-lime glass used as substrate. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

The purpose of this work is the deposition of films in order to increase the corrosion resistance of AISI 304 steel, which is a material used to construct the reactors for bioethanol production. This deposition inhibits the permeation of corrosive species to the film-metal interface. Thin films were prepared by radio-frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) method using plasmas of hexamethyldisiloxane/argon/oxygen mixtures excited by signals of different powers. The plasma was generated by the application of RF power of 13.56 MHz to the sample holder while keeping grounded the topmost electrode and the chamber walls. The effect of the RF power on the properties of the samples was investigated by perfilometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of the corrosion resistance tests of the AISI 304 steel were interpreted in terms of the energy delivered to the growing layer by plasma excitation power.

We describe work in which gold nanoparticles were formed in diamond-like carbon (DLC), thereby generating a Au-DLC nanocomposite. A high-quality, hydrogen-free DLC thin film was formed by filtered vacuum arc plasma deposition, into which gold nanoparticles were introduced using two different methods. The first method was gold ion implantation into the DLC film at a number of decreasing ion energies, distributing the gold over a controllable depth range within the DLC. The second method was co-deposition of gold and carbon, using two separate vacuum arc plasma guns with suitably interleaved repetitive pulsing. Transmission electron microscope images show that the size of the gold nanoparticles obtained by ion implantation is 3-5 nm. For the Au-DLC composite obtained by co-deposition, there were two different nanoparticle sizes, most about 2 nm with some 6-7 nm. Raman spectroscopy indicates that the implanted sample contains a smaller fraction of sp(3) bonding for the DLC, demonstrating that some sp(3) bonds are destroyed by the gold implantation. The stepped rotating cylinder electrode (SRCE) geometry has been developed as a simple aid to the practical study of the flow-enhanced corrosion and applied electrochemistry problems commonly observed under conditions of disturbed, turbulent flow. The electrodeposition of cupric ions from an acid sulphate plating bath has been used to characterise differential rates of mass transfer to the SRCE. The variation in thickness of electrodeposited copperfilms has allowed the mapping of local rates of mass transfer over the active surface of this geometry. Both optical and scanning electron microscopy were used for the examination of metallographic sections to provide a high resolution evaluation of the distribution of mass transfer coefficient. Results are also discussed using the convective-diffusion model in combination with the existing direct numerical flow simulation (DNS) data for this geometry.

Although poly(alpha-hydroxy esters), especially the PLGA family of lactic acid/glycolic acid copolymers, have many properties which make them promising materials for tissue engineering, the inherent chemistry of surfaces made from these particular polymers is problematic. In vivo, they promote a strong foreign-body response as a result of nonspecific adsorption and denaturation of serum proteins, which generally results in the formation of a nonfunctional fibrous capsule. Surface modification post-production of the scaffolds is an often-utilized approach to solving this problem, conceptually allowing the formation of a scaffold with mechanical properties defined by the bulk material and molecular-level interactions defined by the modified surface properties. A promising concept is the so-called blank slate: essentially a surface that is rendered resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption but can be readily activated to covalently bind bio-functional molecules such as extracellular matrix proteins, growth factors or polysaccharides. This study focuses on the use of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to follow the layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic deposition of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid and chitosan onto PLGA surfaces rendered positively charged by aminolysis, to form a robust, protein-resistant coating. We further show that this surface may be further functionalized via the covalent attachment of collagen IV, which may then be used as a template for the self-assembly of basement membrane components from dilute Matrigel. The response of NIH-3T3 fibroblasts to these surfaces was also followed and shown to closely parallel the results observed in the QCM.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of highly conformal, silicon-based dielectric thin films has become necessary because of the continuing decrease in feature size in microelectronic devices. The ALD of oxides and nitrides is usually thought to be mechanistically similar, but plasma-enhanced ALD of silicon nitride is found to be problematic, while that of silicon oxide is straightforward. To find why, the ALD of silicon nitride and silicon oxide dielectric films was studied by applying ab initio methods to theoretical models for proposed surface reaction mechanisms. The thermodynamic energies for the elimination of functional groups from different silicon precursors reacting with simple model molecules were calculated using density functional theory (DFT), explaining the lower reactivity of precursors toward the deposition of silicon nitride relative to silicon oxide seen in experiments, but not explaining the trends between precursors. Using more realistic cluster models of amine and hydroxyl covered surfaces, the structures and energies were calculated of reaction pathways for chemisorption of different silicon precursors via functional group elimination, with more success. DFT calculations identified the initial physisorption step as crucial toward deposition and this step was thus used to predict the ALD reactivity of a range of amino-silane precursors, yielding good agreement with experiment. The retention of hydrogen within silicon nitride films but not in silicon oxide observed in FTIR spectra was accounted for by the theoretical calculations and helped verify the application of the model.

© 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Nanoparticles are being explored in many different applications due to the unique properties offered by quantum effects. To broaden the scope of these applications, the deposition of nanoparticles onto substrates in a simple and controlled way is highly desired. In this study, we use resonant infrared matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE) for the deposition of metallic, silver nanoparticles for plasmonic applications. We find that RIR-MAPLE, a simple and versatile approach, is able to deposit silver nanoparticles as large as 80 nm onto different substrates with good adhesion, regardless of substrate properties. In addition, the nanoparticle surface coverage of the substrates, which result from the random distribution of nanoparticles across the substrate per laser pulse, can be simply and precisely controlled by RIR-MAPLE. Polymer films of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) are also deposited by RIR-MAPLE on top of the deposited silver nanoparticles in order to demonstrate enhanced absorption due to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect. The reported features of RIR-MAPLE nanoparticle deposition indicate that this tool can enable efficient processing of nanoparticle thin films for applications that require specific substrates or configurations that are not easily achieved using solution-based approaches.

Emulsion-based, resonant infrared matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE) has been demonstrated as an alternative technique to deposit conjugated polymer films for photovoltaic applications; yet, a fundamental understanding of how the emulsion target characteristics translate into film properties and solar cell performance is unclear. Such understanding is crucial to enable the rational improvement of organic solar cell (OSC) efficiency and to realize the expected advantages of emulsion-based RIR-MAPLE for OSC fabrication. In this paper, the effect of the primary solvent used in the emulsion target is studied, both experimentally and theoretically, and it is found to determine the conjugated polymer cluster size in the emulsion as well as surface roughness and internal morphology of resulting polymer films. By using a primary solvent with low solubility-in-water and low vapor pressure, the surface roughness of deposited P3HT and PCPDTBT polymer films was reduced to 10 nm, and the efficiency of P3HT:PC61BM OSCs was increased to 3.2% (∼100 times higher compared to the first MAPLE OSC demonstration [ Caricato , A. P. ; Appl. Phys. Lett. 2012 , 100 , 073306 ]). This work unveils the mechanism of polymer film formation using emulsion-based RIR-MAPLE and provides insight and direction to determine the best ways to take advantage of the emulsion target approach to control film properties for different applications.
