Er3+:LiYF4 single crystal has been studied by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy in the IR-visible-UV (0-44000 cm-1) region from 4.2 K to room temperature. Polarized spectra were recorded in order to assign numerous Stark levels of electronic transitions mentioned but not attributed before in the related literature and to discuss the irreducible representations (irreps) of the 4I15/2 sublevels. A parametric hamiltonian, including free ion (Eν, α, β, γ, Tλ, ζ, Mk and Pi) and crystal field parameters (B2 0, B4 0, B4 4, B6 0 and B6 4) in an approximate D2d symmetry for the rare earth site in this scheelite type structure, was used to simulate 109 energy positions of the Er ion with a r.m.s. standard deviation of 14.6 cm-1. A comparison with previously published results for Nd3+ in the same matrix is done. © 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

In this work, the persistent luminescence mechanisms of Tb3+ (in CdSiO3) and Eu2+ (in BaAl2O4) based on solid experimental data are compared. The photoluminescence spectroscopy shows the different nature of the inter- and intraconfigurational transitions for Eu2+ and Tb3+, respectively. The electron is the charge carrier in both mechanisms, implying the presence of electron acceptor defects. The preliminary structural analysis shows a free space in CdSiO3 able to accommodate interstitial oxide ions needed by charge compensation during the initial preparation. The subsequent annealing removes this oxide leaving behind an electron trap. Despite the low band gap energy for CdSiO3, determined with synchrotron radiation UV-VUV excitation spectroscopy of Tb3+, the persistent luminescence from Tb3+ is observed only with UV irradiation. The need of high excitation energy is due to the position of F-7(6) level deep below the bottom of the conduction band, as determined with the 4f(8)-> 4f(7)5d(1) and the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transitions. Finally, the persistent luminescence mechanisms are constructed and, despite the differences, the mechanisms for Tb3+ and Eu2+ proved to be rather similar. This similarity confirms the solidity of the interpretation of experimental data for the Eu2+ doped persistent luminescence materials and encourages the use of similar models for other persistent luminescence materials. Poly-N-Isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) colloidal particles form crystal phases that show a thermosensitive behaviour and can be used as atomic model systems. This polymer has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic character and has interesting stimuli-responsive properties in aqueous solution, of which the most important is the temperature response. Above a certain temperature, called Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST), the system undergoes a volume phase transition (VPT). Above the LCST, the water is expelled from the polymer network and the swollen state at low temperature transforms into a shrunken state at high temperature. The thermoresponsive behaviour of PNIPAM can be influenced by pH and ionic strength, as well as by the presence of copolymers, such as acrylic acid. In a system formed both by particles of PNIPAM and PNIPAM doped with acrylic acid, one can control the size ratio of the two components by changing the temperature of the mixture, while keeping particle interactions relatively the same. It is therefore possible to obtain thermoresponsive colloidal crystal in which temperature changes induce defects whose formation processes and dynamics can be analysed in an optical microscope at a convenient spatial and temporal scale. The goal of this thesis project was to find the conditions in which such a system could be formed, by using characterization techniques such as Static Light Scattering, Dynamic Light Scattering and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy. Two PNIPAM-AAc systems were available, and after characterization it was possible to select a suitable one, on the basis of its low polydispersity and the lack of a VPT, regardless of the external conditions (system JPN_7). The synthesis of a PNIPAM system was attempted, with particles of dimensions matching the JPN_7 system and, unlike JPN_7, displaying a VPT, and one suitable candidate for the mixed system was finally found (system CB_5). The best conditions to obtain thermoresponsive crystal were selected, and the formation and healing of defects were investigated with CLSM temperature scans. The obtained results show that the approach is the correct one and that the present report could represent a useful start for future developments in defect analysis and defect dynamics studies.

The research reported in this dissertation investigates the impact of grain boundaries, film interface, and crystallographic orientation on the ionic conductivity of thin film Gd-doped CeO2 (GDC). Chapter 2 of this work addresses claims in the literature that submicron grain boundaries have the potential to dramatically increase the ionic conductivity of GDC films. Unambiguous testing of this claim requires directly comparing the ionic conductivity of single-crystal GDC films to films that are identical except for the presence of submicron grain boundaries. In this work techniques have been developed to grow GDC films by RF magnetron sputtering from a GDC target on single crystal r plane sapphire substrates. These techniques allow the growth of films that are single crystals or polycrystalline with 80 nm diameter grains. The ionic conductivities of these films have been measured and the data shows that the ionic conductivity of single crystal GDC is greater than that of the polycrystalline films by more than a factor of 4 over the 400-700°C temperature range. Chapter 3 of this work investigates the ionic conductivity of surface and interface regions of thin film Gd-doped CeO2. In this study, single crystal GDC films have been grown to thicknesses varying from 20 to 500 nm and their conductivities have been measured in the 500-700°C temperature range. Decreasing conductivity with decreasing film thickness was observed. Analysis of the conductivity data is consistent with the presence of an approximately 50 nm layer of less conductive material in every film. This study concludes that the surface and interface regions of thin film GDC are less conductive than the bulk single crystal regions, rather than being highly conductive paths. Chapter 4 of this work investigates the ionic conductivity of thin film Gd-doped CeO2 (GDC) as a function of crystallographic orientation. A theoretical expression has been developed for the ionic conductivity of the [100] and [110] directions in single crystal GDC. This relationship is compared to experimental data collected from a single crystal GDC film. The film was grown to a thickness of _300 nm and its conductivity measured along the [100] and [110] orientations in the 500-700°C temperature range. The experimental data shows no statistically significant difference in the conductivities of the [100] and [110] directions in single crystal GDC. This result agrees with the theoretical model which predicts no difference between the conductivities of the two directions.

In this work we propose a novel cholesteric liquid crystal beam steering device based on the Kerr effect. The first version of the device consists of two ITO coated glass plates, with intentionally prepared electrodes, assembled together with a thickness gradient between both sides of the device. One side of the cell has two substrates at direct contact; the other side has separated substrates to form the wedge. The cell was filled with a cholesteric liquid crystal. The liquid crystal material is an innovative mixture called 1892E with extremely low viscosity doped with a ZLI chiral nematogen. The proposed beam steering device based on cholesteric liquid crystals has great potential for many photonic applications. Results describing the performance of the device and the properties of the selected liquid crystals are presented.

To study the stoichiometry dependence of irradiation e ects in fluorite-type mixed oxide nuclear fuel (UPuO2), ion implantation in La doped ceria was used. Cerium dioxide single crystals with 0 mol%, 5 mol% and 25 mol% La concentration were irradiated with 1 MeV Kr ions at 800 C. In-situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) was utilized to observe the the damage process and defects created by the ion beam irradiation. Dislocation loops were observed after irradiation and were determined to be on {111} planes, but not on {220} or {200} planes. Ab substantial difference in the average size of dislocation loops for 0 %, 5% and 25% cases was observed at several doses. The growth rate of dislocation loops and the oxygen vacancy di usivity were found to be inversely correlated.

A new solid composite polymer electrolyte was reported by incorporating Azino-bis-(3-ethyl benzo thiazoline-6-sulphonate) ion [ABTS] as dopant in poly(vinylidene flouride) along with redox couple (1-/13-). Under certain conditions, the electrolyte composition forms brush like nano-rods while it is doped with Azino-bis-(3-ethly) benzo thiazoline-6-sulphonate) ion [ABTS], a pi-electron donor. The polymer electrolyte forms nanoscale interpenetrating network with the crystalline order of the polymer electrolyte that seems to be a desirable architecture for the active layer of the photoelectrochemical cell. With this new polymer electrolyte, dye-sensitized solar cell was fabricated using N3 dye absorbed over Ti02- nonoparticles (photoanode) and conducting carbon cement coated on the conducting press (FTO, photocathode). This polymer composite has been successfully used as a promising candidate as solid polymer electrolyte in nanocrystalline dye-sensitized solar cell.

New composite doped poly (ethylene oxide) polymer electrolyte was developed using 2-mercapto benzimidazole as plasticizer and iodide/triiodide as redox couple. The fabrication of the cell involves Poly(ethylene oxide)/ 2-mercapto benzimidazole / iodide/triiodide as polymer electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cell fabricated with N3 dye and TiO2 nanoparticles as the photoanode and Platinum coated FTO (fluorine doped SnO2) as counter electrode. The current-volatage characteristics under simulated sunlight AM1.5 shows a short circuit current Isc of 8.7mA and open circuit photovoltage 508 mV. The conductivity measurements for the new polymer electrolyte and the photoelectrochemical measurments were carried out systematically. In 2-mercapto benzimidazole the electron rich sulphur and nitrogen atoms, act as pi-electron donors that form good interaction with iodine which plays a vital role in the performance of the fabricated dye-sensitized solar cells. The resonance effect increases the stability of the cell to a considerable extent. These results suggest that the new composite polymer electrolyte performs as a promising new doped polymer-electrolyte.

Pure Tungsten Oxide (WO3) and Iron-doped (10 at%) Tungsten Oxide (WO3:Fe) nanostructured thin films were prepared using a dual crucible Electron Beam Evaporation techniques. The films were deposited at room temperature in high vacuum condition on glass substrate and post-heat treated at 300 oC for 1 hour. From the study of X-ray diffraction and Raman the characteristics of the as-deposited WO3 and WO3:Fe films indicated non-crystalline nature. The surface roughness of all the films showed in the order of 2.5 nm as observed using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed tungsten oxide films with stoichiometry close to WO3. The addition of Fe to WO3 produced a smaller particle size and lower porosity as observed using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). A slight difference in optical band gap energies of 3.22 eV and 3.12 eV were found between the as-deposited WO3 and WO3:Fe films, respectively. However, the difference in the band gap energies of the annealed films were significantly higher having values of 3.12 eV and 2.61 eV for the WO3 and WO3:Fe films, respectively. The heat treated samples were investigated for gas sensing applications using noise spectroscopy and doping of Fe to WO3 reduced the sensitivity to certain gasses. Detailed study of the WO3 and WO3:Fe films gas sensing properties is the subject of another paper.
