Lignin was graft copolymerized with methyl methacrylate using manganic pyrophosphate as initiator. This modified lignin was then blended (up to 50 wt%) with low density polyethylene (LDPE) using a small quantity of poly[ethylene-co-(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PEGMA) compatibilizer. The mechanical properties of the blend were substantially improved by using modified lignin in contrast to untreated lignin. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed loss of crystallinity of the LDPE phase owing to the interaction between the blend components. Thermogravimetric analysis showed higher thermal stability of modified lignin in the domain of blend processing. This suggested that there is scope for useful utilization of lignin, which could also lead to the development of eco-friendly products. (c) 2005 Society of Chemical Industry.

The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the interaction of inelastic deformation and microstructural changes of two Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs): Zr41.25Ti13.75Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 (commercially designated as Vitreloy 1 or Vit1) and Zr46.75Ti8.25Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 (Vitreloy 4, Vit4). High-temperature uniaxial compression tests were performed on the two Zr alloys at various strain rates, followed by structural characterization using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Two distinct modes of mechanically induced atomic disordering in the two alloys were observed, with Vit1 featuring clear phase separation and crystallization after deformation as observed with TEM, while Vit4 showing only structural relaxation with no crystallization. The influence of the structural changes on the mechanical behaviors of the two materials was further investigated by jump-in-strain-rate tests, and flow softening was observed in Vit4. A free volume theory was applied to explain the deformation behaviors, and the activation volumes were calculated for both alloys.

Crystalline Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles have been achieved through a modified sol–gel process using a mixture of ethylenediamine and ethanolamine as a solvent. The Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetry (DSC/TG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that well-dispersed 5–60 nm Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were prepared through heat-treating the precursor at 650 °C and the high density pellets were obtained at temperatures lower than those commonly employed. The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the Bi5NbO10 solid solutions were investigated in the 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz frequency range. Two distinct relaxation mechanisms were observed in the plots of dielectric loss and the imaginary part of impedance (Z″) versus frequency in the temperature range of 200–350 °C. The dielectric constant and the loss in the low frequency regime were electrode dependent. The ionic conductivity of Bi5NbO10 solid solutions at 700 °C is 2.86 Ω−1 m−1 which is in same order of magnitude for Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 ceramics at same temperature. These results suggest that Bi5NbO10 is a promising material for an oxygen ion conductor.

1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized in different weight ratios using UV light induced photo-polymerization to give poly(HDDA-co-MMA). Differential scanning calorimetry shows that copolymer was formed. The thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric studies with different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were adopted to evaluate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These analyses are important to study the binder removal from 3D-shaped ceramic objects made by techniques like Solid free form fabrication. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Driven nonequilibrium structural phase transformation has been probed using time-varying resistance fluctuations or noise. We demonstrate that the non-Gaussian component (NGC) of noise obtained by evaluating the higher-order statistics of fluctuations, serves as a simple kinetic detector of these phase transitions. Using the Martensite transformation in free-standing wires of nickel-titanium binary alloys as a prototype, we observe clear deviations from the Gaussian background in the transformation zone, indicative of the long-range correlations in the system as the phase transforms. The viability of non-Gaussian statistics as a robust probe to structural phase transition was also confirmed by comparing the results from differential scanning calorimetry measurements. We further studied the response of the NGC to the modifications in the microstructure on repeated thermal cycling, as well as the variations in the temperature-drive rate, and explained the results using established simplistic models based on the different competing time scales. Our experiments (i) suggest an alternative method to estimate the transformation temperature scales with high accuracy and (ii) establish a connection between the material-specific evolution of microstructure to the statistics of its linear response. Since the method depends on an in-built long-range correlation during transformation, it could be portable to other structural transitions, as well as to materials of different physical origin and size.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. This article describes successful incorporation of multiwalled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and various functionalized BNNTs by Lewis bases such as trioctylamine (TOA), tributylamine (TBA), and triphenylphosphine (TPP), etc., in organogels formed by triphenylenevinylene (TPV)-based low molecular weight gelator (LMWG) in toluene and consequent characterization of the resulting gel nanocomposites. Functionalized BNNTs were synthesized first, and the presence of tubular structures with high aspect ratio and increased diameter compared to the starting BNNTs was confirmed by SEM. TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The micrographs of composites of I and BNNTs showed evidence of wrapping of the gelator molecules on to the BNNT surface presumably brought about by pi-pi stacking and van der Waals interactions, This leads to the formation of densely packed and directionally aligned fibrous networks. Such ``reinforced'' aggregation of the gelator molecules in presence of doped BNNTs led to an increase in the sot-to-gel transition temperature and the solidification temperature of the gel nanocomposites as revealed from differential scanning calorimetry. Rheological investigations of the gel nanocomposites indicate that the flow properties of the resulting materials become resistant to applied stress upon incorporation of even a very low wt % of BNNTs. Finally, the increase in thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite compared to the gelator alone was observed for the temperature range of 0-60 degrees C which may make these composites potentially useful in various applications depending on the choice and the amount of BNNT loading in the composite.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) of poly(ethyleneoxide) and magnesium triflate, which are plasticized with propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC) and a mixture of PC and EC, are studied for their conductivity, ac impedance of the Mg I SPE interface, cyclic voltammetry, infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. in the presence of plasticizers, the ionic conductivity (a) increases from a value of 1 x 10(-8) S cm(-1) to about 1 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at ambient temperature. The a is found to follow a VTF relationship with temperature. The values of the activation energy, pre-exponential factor and equilibrium glass transition temperature are shown to depend on the concentration of plasticizer. Ac impedance studies indicate lower interfacial impedance of Mg/plasticized SPE than stainless steel/plasticized SPE. The impedance spectra are analyzed using a non-linear least square curve fitting technique and the interfacial resistance of Mg/plasticized SPE is evaluated. The cyclic voltammetric results suggest a quasireversible type of Mg/Mg2+ couple in plasticized SPE. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The standard Gibbs energies of formation of RuO2 and OsO2 at high temperature have been determined with high precision, using a novel apparatus that incorporates a buffer electrode between the reference and working electrodes, The buffer electrode absorbs the electrochemical flux of oxygen through the solid electrolyte from the electrode with higher oxygen chemical potential to the electrode with lower oxygen potential, The buffer electrode prevents polarization of the measuring electrode and ensures accurate data, The standard Gibbs energies of formation (Delta(f)G degrees) of RuO2, in the temperature range of 900-1500 K, and OsO2, in the range of 900-1200 K, can be represented by the equations Delta(f)G degrees(RuO2)(J/mol) = -324 720 + 354.21T - 23.490T In T Delta(f)G degrees(OsO2)(J/mol) = -304 740 + 318.80T - 18.444T In T where the temperature T is given in Kelvin and the deviation of the measurement is +/- 80 J/mol, The high-temperature heat ;capacities of RuO2 and OsO2 are measured using differential scanning calorimetry. The information for both the low- and high-temperature heat rapacity of RuO2 is coupled with the Delta(f)G degrees data obtained in this study to evaluate the standard enthalpy of formation of RuO2 at 298.15 K (Delta(f)H degrees(298.15K)). The low-temperature heat capacity of OsO2 has not been measured: therefore, the standard enthalpy and entropy of formation of OsO2 at 298.15 K (Delta(f)H degrees(298.15K) and S degrees(298.15K), respectively) are derived simultaneously through an optimization procedure from the high-temperature heat capacity and the Gibbs energy of formation. Both Delta fH degrees(298.15K) and S degrees(298.15K) are treated as variables in the optimization routine, For RuO2, the standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K is Delta fH degrees(298.15K) (RuO2) -313.52 +/- 0.08 kJ/mol, and that for OsO2 is Delta(f)H degrees(298.15K) (OSO2) = -295.96 +/- 0.08 kJ/mol. The standard entropy of OsO2 at 298.15 K that has been obtained from the optimization is given as S degrees(298.15K) (OsO2) = 49.8 +/- 0.2 J (mol K)(-1).

A homologous series of alkyl 6-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside amphiphiles was prepared,in an effort to identify the role of hydroxyl group in the mesomorphic behavior of alkyl glycosides. Synthesis was performed by a chlorination of the sugar moiety in alkyl-beta-D-glucopyranosides with methylsulfonyl chloride in DMF, followed by a metal mediated dehalogenation to secure alkyl 6-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosides, wherein the alkyl chain length varied from C-9 to C-16. The mesomorphic behavior of these 6-deoxy alkyl glycosides was assessed using polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction method. Whereas the lower homologues exhibited a monotropic SmA phase till sub-ambient temperatures, the higher homologues formed a plastic phase. A partial interdigitized bilaye structure of SmA phase is inferred from experimental d-spacing and computationally derived lengths of the molecules. The results were compared with those of normal alkyl glucopyranosides, retained with hydroxyl groups at C-2-C-6 carbons, and alkyl 2-deoxy-glucopyranosides, devoid of a hydroxyl group at C-2 and the comparison showed important differences in the mesomorphic behavior.(C)2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. On hydrogenation of the Laves phase SmFe2, an amorphous SmFe2H3.6 (a-SmFe2H3.6) alloy was formed between 400 K and 500 K. The amorphous nature of the alloy was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and thermal analysis. However, SmFe2 absorbed hydrogen in the crystal state below 350 K and decomposed into SmH2 and α-Fe above 550 K. The crystallization behaviour of a-SmFe2H3.6 was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry in combination with electron microscopy. Even after considerable hydrogen desorption (Image ) by an endothermic reaction on heating, the amorphous state was retained. Crystallization of a-SmFe2H3.6 took place in two stages. The first stage involved the precipitation of α-Fe in the amorphous matrix. The second stage involved the decomposition of the remaining amorphous phase into the equilibrium phases SmH2 and SmFe2.

Alternating differential scanning calorimetry (ADSC) studies were undertaken to investigate the effect of Tl addition on the thermal properties of As30Te70-xTlx ( 6 <= x <= 22 at%) glasses. These include parameters such as glass-transition temperature (T-g), changes in specific heat capacity (Delta C-p) and relaxation enthalpy (Delta H-NR) at the glass transition. It was found that T-g of the glasses decreased with the addition of Tl, which is in contrast to the dependence of T-g in As - Te glasses on the addition of Al and In. The change in heat capacity Delta C-p through the glass transition was also found to decrease with increasing Tl content. The addition of Tl to the As - Te matrix may lead to a breaking of As - Te chains and the formation of Tl+Te- AsTe2/2 dipoles. There was no significant dependence of the change of relaxation enthalpy, through the glass transition, with composition.

Pristine and long-chain functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were incorporated successfully in supramolecular organogels formed by an all-trans tri(p-phenylenevinylene) bis-aldoxime to give rise to new nanocomposites with interesting mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Variable-temperature UV-vis and fluorescence spectra reveal both pristine and functionalized SWNTs promote aggregation of the gelator molecules and result in quenching of the UV-vis and fluorescence intensity. Electron microscopy and confocal microscopy show the existence of a densely packed and directionally aligned fibrous network in the resulting nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the composites shows that incorporation of SWNTs increases the gel formation temperature. The DSC of the xerogels of 1-SWNT composites indicates formation of different thermotropic mesophases which is also evident from polarized optical microscopy. The reinforced aggregation of the gelators on SWNT doping was reflected in the mechanical properties of the composites. Rheology of the composites demonstrates the formation of a rigid and viscoelastic solid-like assembly on SWNT incorporation. The composites from gel-SWNTs were found to be semiconducting in nature and showed enhanced electrical conductivity compared to that of the native organogel. Upon irradiation with a near IR laser at 1064 nm for 5 min it was possible to selectively induce a gel-to-sol phase transition of the nanocomposites, while irradiation for even 30 min of the native organogel under identical conditions did not cause any gel-to-sol conversion.

Nowadays growing number of new active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) have large molecular weight and are hydrophobic. The energy of their crystal lattice is bigger and polarity has decreased. This leads to weakened solubility and dissolution rate of the drug. These properties can be enhanced for example by amorphization. Amorphous form has the best dissolution rate in the solid state. In the amorphous form drug molecules are randomly arranged, so the energy required to dissolve molecules is lower compared to the crystalline counterpart. The disadvantage of amorphous form is that it is unstable. Amorphous form tends to crystallize. Stability of amorphous form can be enhanced by adding an adjuvant to drug product. Adjuvant is usually a polymer. Polymers prevent crystallization both by forming bonds with API molecules and by steric hindrance. The key thing in stabilizing amorphous form is good miscibility between API and polymer. They have to be mixed in a molecular level so that the polymer is able to prevent crystallization. The aim of this work was to study miscibility of drug and polymer and stability of their dispersion with different analytical methods. Amorphous dispersions were made by rotary evaporator and freeze dryer. Amorphicity was confirmed with X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) right after preparation. Itraconazole and theophylline were the chosen molecules to be stabilized. Itraconazole was expected to be easier and theophylline more difficult to stabilize. Itraconazole was stabilized with HPMC and theophylline was stabilized with PVP. Miscibility was studied with XRPD and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition it was studied with polarized light microscope if miscibility was possible to see visually. Dispersions were kept in stressed conditions and the crystallization was analyzed with XRPD. Stability was also examined with isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC). The dispersion of itraconazole and theophylline 40/60 (w/w) was completely miscible. It was proved by linear combination of XRPD results and single glass transition temperature in DSC. Homogenic well mixed film was observed with light microscope. Phase separation was observed with other compositions. Dispersions of theophylline and PVP mixed only partly. Stability of itraconazole dispersions were better than theophylline dispersions which were mixed poorer. So miscibility was important thing considering stability. The results from isothermal microcalorimetry were similar to results from conventional stability studies. Complementary analytical methods should be used when studying miscibility so that the results are more reliable. Light microscope is one method in addition to mostly used XRPD and DSC. Analyzing light microscope photos is quite subjective but it gives an idea of miscibility. Isothermal microcalorimetry can be one option for conventional stability studies. If right conditions can be made where the crystallization is not too fast, it may be possible to predict stability with isothermal microcalorimetry.

In order to have access to chiral gels, a series of salts derived from (1R, 3S)-(+)-camphoric acid and various secondary amines were prepared based on supramolecular synthon rationale. Out of seven salts prepared, two showed moderate gelation abilities. The gels were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, table top rheology, scanning electron microscopy, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Structure property correlation based on X-ray diffraction techniques remain inconclusive indicating that some of the integrated part associated with the gelation phenomena requires a better understanding.
