Friction force generated in lubricated cutting of steel is experimentally estimated by recording the tangential force experienced by the spherical face of a pin rubbing against a freshly cut surface. The pin and the cutting tool are both submerged in the lubricant and the pin is situated on the cut-track to record the force. The recording shows an instantaneous achievement of a peak in the force curve followed by a decline in time to a steady state value. The peak and not the steady state friction was found to be sensitive to the structure of the hydrocarbon and addition of additive to the oil. The configuration was designed and tested to demonstrate the influence of a reaction film which develops during cutting, on cutting tool friction. Given the strong correlation between the peak friction and the existence of a tribofilm in the cutting zone, the configuration is used to determine the lower limit of a cutting speed regime, which marks the initiation of lubricant starvation, in cutting of steel using an emulsion as a cutting fluid. Experiments and computer simulation studies have revealed existence of rich dynamics in the orientational relaxation of molecules in confined systems such as water in reverse micelles, cyclodextrin cavities, and nanotubes. Here we introduce a novel finite length one dimensional Ising model to investigate the propagation and the annihilation of dynamical correlations in finite systems and to understand the intriguing shortening of the orientational relaxation time that has been reported for small sized reverse micelles. In our finite sized model, the two spins at the two end cells are oriented in the opposite directions to mimic the effects of surface that in real system fixes water orientation in the opposite directions. This produces opposite polarizations to propagate inside from the surface and to produce bulklike condition at the center. This model can be solved analytically for short chains. For long chains, we solve the model numerically with Glauber spin flip dynamics (and also with Metropolis single-spin flip Monte Carlo algorithm). We show that model nicely reproduces many of the features observed in experiments. Due to the destructive interference among correlations that propagate from the surface to the core, one of the rotational relaxation time components decays faster than the bulk. In general, the relaxation of spins is nonexponential due to the interplay between various interactions. In the limit of strong coupling between the spins or in the limit of low temperature, the nature of relaxation of the spins undergoes a qualitative change with the emergence of a homogeneous dynamics where decay is predominantly exponential, again in agreement with experiments. Two methods of pre-harvest inventory were designed and tested on three cutting sites containing a total of 197 500 m3 of wood. These sites were located on flat-ground boreal forests located in northwestern Quebec. Both methods studied involved scaling of trees harvested to clear the road path one year (or more) prior to harvest of adjacent cut-blocks. The first method (ROAD) considers the total road right-of-way volume divided by the total road area cleared. The resulting volume per hectare is then multiplied by the total cut-block area scheduled for harvest during the following year to obtain the total estimated cutting volume. The second method (STRATIFIED) also involves scaling of trees cleared from the road. However, in STRATIFIED, log scaling data are stratified by forest stand location. A volume per hectare is calculated for each stretch of road that crosses a single forest stand. This volume per hectare is then multiplied by the remaining area of the same forest stand scheduled for harvest one year later. The sum of all resulting estimated volumes per stand gives the total estimated cutting-volume for all cut-blocks adjacent to the studied road. A third method (MNR) was also used to estimate cut-volumes of the sites studied. This method represents the actual existing technique for estimating cutting volume in the province of Quebec. It involves summing the cut volume for all forest stands. The cut volume is estimated by multiplying the area of each stand by its estimated volume per hectare obtained from standard stock tables provided by the governement. The resulting total estimated volume per cut-block for all three methods was then compared with the actual measured cut-block volume (MEASURED). This analysis revealed a significant difference between MEASURED and MNR methods with the MNR volume estimate being 30 % higher than MEASURED. However, no significant difference from MEASURED was observed for volume estimates for the ROAD and STRATIFIED methods which respectively had estimated cutting volumes 19 % and 5 % lower than MEASURED. Thus the ROAD and STRATIFIED methods are good ways to estimate cut-block volumes after road right-of-way harvest for conditions similar to those examined in this study.

We apply the method of multiple scales (MMS) to a well-known model of regenerative cutting vibrations in the large delay regime. By ``large'' we mean the delay is much larger than the timescale of typical cutting tool oscillations. The MMS up to second order, recently developed for such systems, is applied here to study tool dynamics in the large delay regime. The second order analysis is found to be much more accurate than the first order analysis. Numerical integration of the MMS slow flow is much faster than for the original equation, yet shows excellent accuracy in that plotted solutions of moderate amplitudes are visually near-indistinguishable. The advantages of the present analysis are that infinite dimensional dynamics is retained in the slow flow, while the more usual center manifold reduction gives a planar phase space; lower-dimensional dynamical features, such as Hopf bifurcations and families of periodic solutions, are also captured by the MMS; the strong sensitivity of the slow modulation dynamics to small changes in parameter values, peculiar to such systems with large delays, is seen clearly; and though certain parameters are treated as small (or, reciprocally, large), the analysis is not restricted to infinitesimal distances from the Hopf bifurcation.

We present the results of a numerical study of a model of the hydrodynamics of a sheared nematogenic fluid, taking into account the effects of order-parameter stresses on the velocity profile but allowing spatial variations only in the gradient direction. When parameter values are such that the stress from orientational distortions is comparable to the bare viscous stress, the system exhibits steady states with the characteristics of shear banding. In addition, nonlinearity in the coupling of extensional flow to orientation leads to the appearance of a new steady state in which the features of both spatiotemporal chaos and shear banding are present.

A comparative study has been carried out of R-12, 22, 125, 134a, 152a, 218, 245, 500, 502, 507 and 717 as working fluids in a vapour-compression refrigeration system. Two performance parameters were defined, which are expressed in reduced quantities for a corresponding-states comparison of these refrigerants in the temperature range -20 to 50-degrees-C. One is based on the product of temperature drop to pressure penalty ratio and the available volumetric heat of vaporisation at the evaporator; the other considers the effect of isentropic compression in the ideal gas state. It was shown that R-125, 507 and 218 could be better alternatives to R-12 than R-134a. Among these, R-218 has a lower maximum cycle pressure.

The phase separation in fluids close to a critical point can be observed in the form of either an interconnected pattern (critical case) or a disconnected pattern (off-critical case). These two regimes have been investigated in different ways. First, a sharp change in pattern is shown to occur very close to the critical point when the composition is varied. No crossover has been observed between the t1 behaviour (interconnected) and a t1/3 behaviour (disconnected), where t is time. This latter growth law, which occurs in the case of compact droplets, will be discussed. Second, it has been observed that a growing interconnected pattern leaves a signature in the form of small droplets. The origin of such a distribution will be discussed in terms of coalescence of domains. No distribution of this kind is observed in the off-critical case.

The problem of combined convection from vertical surfaces in a porous medium saturated with a power-law type non-Newtonian fluid is investigated. The transformed conservation laws are solved numerically for the case of variable surface heat flux conditions. Results for the details of the velocity and temperature fields as well as the Nusselt number have been presented. The viscosity index ranged from 0.5 to 2.0.

Numerical results are presented for the free-convection boundary-layer equations of the Ostwald de-Waele non-Newtonian power-law type fluids near a three-dimensional (3-D) stagnation point of attachment on an isothermal surface. The existence of dual solutions that are three-dimensional in nature have been verified by means of a numerical procedure. An asymptotic solution for very large Prandtl numbers has also been derived. Solutions are presented for a range of values of the geometric curvature parameter c, the power-law index n, and the Prandtl number Pr.

Peristaltic motion of two immiscible viscous incompressible fluids in a circular tube is studied in pumping and copumping ranges under long-wavelength and low-Reynolds-number assumptions. The effect of the peripheral-layer viscosity on the time-averaged flux and the mechanical efficiency is studied. The formation and growth of the trapping zone in the core and the peripheral layer are explained. It is observed that the bolus volume in the peripheral layer increases with an increase in the viscosity ratio. The limits of the time-averaged flux (Q) over bar for trapping in the core are obtained. The trapping observed in the peripheral layer decreases in size with an increase in (Q) over bar but never disappears. The development of the complete trapping of the core fluid by the peripheral-layer fluid with an increase in the time-averaged flux is demonstrated. The effect of peripheral-layer viscosity on the reflux layer is investigated. It is also observed that the reflux occurs in the entire pumping range for all viscosity ratios and it is absent in the entire range of copumping.

The structural state of K-feldspars in the quartzofeldspathic gneisses, charnockites, metapelites and pegmatites from the southern Kamataka, northern Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala high-grade regions of southern India has been characterized using petrographic and powder X-ray diffraction methods. The observed distribution pattern of structural state with a preponderance of disordered K-feldspar polymorphs in granulites compared to the ordered microclines in the amphibolite facies rocks is interpreted to reflect principally the varying H2O contents in the metamorphic-metasomatic fluids across metamorphic grade. The K-feldspars in the pegmatites of granitic derivation and in a pegmatite of inferred metamorphic origin also point to the important role of aqueous fluids in their structural state.
