1. Fitting a linear regression to data provides much more information about the relationship between two variables than a simple correlation test. A goodness of fit test of the line should always be carried out. Hence, r squared estimates the strength of the relationship between Y and X, ANOVA whether a statistically significant line is present, and the ‘t’ test whether the slope of the line is significantly different from zero. 2. Always check whether the data collected fit the assumptions for regression analysis and, if not, whether a transformation of the Y and/or X variables is necessary. 3. If the regression line is to be used for prediction, it is important to determine whether the prediction involves an individual y value or a mean. Care should be taken if predictions are made close to the extremities of the data and are subject to considerable error if x falls beyond the range of the data. Multiple predictions require correction of the P values. 3. If several individual regression lines have been calculated from a number of similar sets of data, consider whether they should be combined to form a single regression line. 4. If the data exhibit a degree of curvature, then fitting a higher-order polynomial curve may provide a better fit than a straight line. In this case, a test of whether the data depart significantly from a linear regression should be carried out.

A non-linear least-squares methodology for simultaneously estimating parameters of selectivity curves with a pre-defined functional form, across size classes and mesh sizes, using catch size frequency distributions, was developed based on the model of Kirkwood and Walker [Kirkwood, G.P., Walker, T.L, 1986. Gill net selectivities for gummy shark, Mustelus antarcticus Gunther, taken in south-eastern Australian waters. Aust. J. Mar. Freshw. Res. 37, 689-697] and [Wulff, A., 1986. Mathematical model for selectivity of gill nets. Arch. Fish Wiss. 37, 101-106]. Observed catches of fish of size class I in mesh m are modeled as a function of the estimated numbers of fish of that size class in the population and the corresponding selectivities. A comparison was made with the maximum likelihood methodology of [Kirkwood, G.P., Walker, T.I., 1986. Gill net selectivities for gummy shark, Mustelus antarcticus Gunther, taken in south-eastern Australian waters. Aust. J. Mar. Freshw. Res. 37, 689-697] and [Wulff, A., 1986. Mathematical model for selectivity of gill nets. Arch. Fish Wiss; 37, 101-106], using simulated catch data with known selectivity curve parameters, and two published data sets. The estimated parameters and selectivity curves were generally consistent for both methods, with smaller standard errors for parameters estimated by non-linear least-squares. The proposed methodology is a useful and accessible alternative which can be used to model selectivity in situations where the parameters of a pre-defined model can be assumed to be functions of gear size; facilitating statistical evaluation of different models and of goodness of fit. Cosmetically tinted soft contact lenses are an attractive option for contact lens wearers. Data that we have gathered from annual contact lens fitting surveys demonstrate that those wearing tinted lenses are more likely to be female (4.6% of all soft lenses fitted vs. 1.6% for males; p < 0.0001) and younger (27 11 years vs. 33 13 years for those wearing non-tinted lenses; p < 0.0001). Tinted lenses tend to be worn more on a part-time basis and are replaced less frequently than non-tinted lenses. The decline in fitting tinted lenses over the past 12 years may be due to (a) the current limited availability of tinted lenses in silicone hydrogel materials and daily disposable replacement frequencies, which together represent a significant majority (78%) of new soft lenses fits today, (b) growing concerns among lens wearers and practitioners relating to the risks of complications associated with the wearing of tinted lenses, and (c) reduced promotion of such lenses by the contact lens industry.

This document describes algorithms based on Elliptic Cryptography (ECC) for use within the Secure Shell (SSH) transport protocol. In particular, it specifies Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) key agreement, Elliptic Curve Menezes-Qu-Vanstone (ECMQV) key agreement, and Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) for use in the SSH Transport Layer protocol.

The paper describes the implementation of a project within Australian Catholic University designed to launch the Faculties into online education in a manner which ensured quality in all aspects of the teaching-learning experiences of academics and students. Key elements of the strategic approach adopted by the project leaders, including the involvement of a specialist commercial provider of web-based delivery systems as a partner in the project, mechanisms to support the initiative through the first stages, careful choice of the programs offered online, and staff development matched to the emerging needs of those involved in the teaching of courses, are described. Challenges encountered in the implementation process, and the factors which assisted in overcoming these problems are identified. The paper draws upon this experience to raise some important issues relevant to the successful introduction of online education as an integral component of the teaching repertoire of Faculties.
