This paper presents necessary and sufficient conditions for the following problem: given a linear time invariant plant G(s) = N(s)D(s)-1 = C(sI - A]-1B, with m inputs, p outputs, p > m, rank(C) = p, rank(B) = rank(CB) = m, £nd a tandem dynamic controller Gc(s) = D c(s)-1Nc(s) = Cc(sI - A c)-1Bc + Dc, with p inputs and m outputs and a constant output feedback matrix Ko ε ℝm×p such that the feedback system is Strictly Positive Real (SPR). It is shown that this problem has solution if and only if all transmission zeros of the plant have negative real parts. When there exists solution, the proposed method firstly obtains Gc(s) in order to all transmission zeros of Gc(s)G(s) present negative real parts and then Ko is found as the solution of some Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Then, taking into account this result, a new LMI based design for output Variable Structure Control (VSC) of uncertain dynamic plants is presented. The method can consider the following design specifications: matched disturbances or nonlinearities of the plant, output constraints, decay rate and matched and nonmatched plant uncertainties. © 2006 IEEE.

New Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) conditions are proposed for the following problem, called Strictly Positive Real (SPR) synthesis: given a linear time-invariant plant, find a constant output feedback matrix Ko and a constant output tandem matrix F for the controlled system to be SPR. It is assumed that the plant has the number of outputs greater than the number of inputs. Some sufficient conditions for the solution of the problem are presented and compared. These results can be directly applied in the LMI-based design of Variable Structure Control (VSC) of uncertain plants. ©2008 IEEE.

Myxidium volitans sp. nov. (Myxozoa: Myxidiidae) parasitizing the hypertrophied green-brownish gallbladder of the teleost Dactylopterus volitans, collected in the Atlantic coast near Niterói, Brazil was described based on ultrastructural studies. The spores were fusiform, sometimes slightly crescent-shaped on average 21.7 ± 0.3 µm (mean ± standard deviation) (n = 50) long and 5.6 ± 0.4 µm (n = 30) wide. The spore wall was thin and smooth, comprising two equally-sized valves joined by a hardly visible sutural ridge. Spores containing two pyriform polar capsules (PC) (5.0 ± 0.4 × 2.3 ± 0.3 µm) (n = 30) are situated in each extremity of the spore. The PC wall was composed of hyaline layer (0.20-0.29 µm thick) and by a thin external granular layer. Each PC contains a polar filament (PF) with irregular arrangements that was projected from its apical region to the bases of PC and coiled laterally from bases to the tip of PC. Some regular striations and S-like structures in the periphery of the PFs with four-five irregular sections were observed. Based on the spore morphology, ultrastructural differences and the specificity of the host we describe this parasite as a new myxosporidian, named M. volitans sp. nov.

In this paper, the effects of uncertainty and expected costs of failure on optimum structural design are investigated, by comparing three distinct formulations of structural optimization problems. Deterministic Design Optimization (DDO) allows one the find the shape or configuration of a structure that is optimum in terms of mechanics, but the formulation grossly neglects parameter uncertainty and its effects on structural safety. Reliability-based Design Optimization (RBDO) has emerged as an alternative to properly model the safety-under-uncertainty part of the problem. With RBDO, one can ensure that a minimum (and measurable) level of safety is achieved by the optimum structure. However, results are dependent on the failure probabilities used as constraints in the analysis. Risk optimization (RO) increases the scope of the problem by addressing the compromising goals of economy and safety. This is accomplished by quantifying the monetary consequences of failure, as well as the costs associated with construction, operation and maintenance. RO yields the optimum topology and the optimum point of balance between economy and safety. Results are compared for some example problems. The broader RO solution is found first, and optimum results are used as constraints in DDO and RBDO. Results show that even when optimum safety coefficients are used as constraints in DDO, the formulation leads to configurations which respect these design constraints, reduce manufacturing costs but increase total expected costs (including expected costs of failure). When (optimum) system failure probability is used as a constraint in RBDO, this solution also reduces manufacturing costs but by increasing total expected costs. This happens when the costs associated with different failure modes are distinct. Hence, a general equivalence between the formulations cannot be established. Optimum structural design considering expected costs of failure cannot be controlled solely by safety factors nor by failure probability constraints, but will depend on actual structural configuration. Recently in most of the industrial automation process an ever increasing degree of automation has been observed. This increasing is motivated by the higher requirement of systems with great performance in terms of quality of products/services generated, productivity, efficiency and low costs in the design, realization and maintenance. This trend in the growth of complex automation systems is rapidly spreading over automated manufacturing systems (AMS), where the integration of the mechanical and electronic technology, typical of the Mechatronics, is merging with other technologies such as Informatics and the communication networks. An AMS is a very complex system that can be thought constituted by a set of flexible working stations, one or more transportation systems. To understand how this machine are important in our society let considerate that every day most of us use bottles of water or soda, buy product in box like food or cigarets and so on. Another important consideration from its complexity derive from the fact that the the consortium of machine producers has estimated around 350 types of manufacturing machine. A large number of manufacturing machine industry are presented in Italy and notably packaging machine industry,in particular a great concentration of this kind of industry is located in Bologna area; for this reason the Bologna area is called “packaging valley”. Usually, the various parts of the AMS interact among them in a concurrent and asynchronous way, and coordinate the parts of the machine to obtain a desiderated overall behaviour is an hard task. Often, this is the case in large scale systems, organized in a modular and distributed manner. Even if the success of a modern AMS from a functional and behavioural point of view is still to attribute to the design choices operated in the definition of the mechanical structure and electrical electronic architecture, the system that governs the control of the plant is becoming crucial, because of the large number of duties associated to it. Apart from the activity inherent to the automation of themachine cycles, the supervisory system is called to perform other main functions such as: emulating the behaviour of traditional mechanical members thus allowing a drastic constructive simplification of the machine and a crucial functional flexibility; dynamically adapting the control strategies according to the different productive needs and to the different operational scenarios; obtaining a high quality of the final product through the verification of the correctness of the processing; addressing the operator devoted to themachine to promptly and carefully take the actions devoted to establish or restore the optimal operating conditions; managing in real time information on diagnostics, as a support of the maintenance operations of the machine. The kind of facilities that designers can directly find on themarket, in terms of software component libraries provides in fact an adequate support as regard the implementation of either top-level or bottom-level functionalities, typically pertaining to the domains of user-friendly HMIs, closed-loop regulation and motion control, fieldbus-based interconnection of remote smart devices. What is still lacking is a reference framework comprising a comprehensive set of highly reusable logic control components that, focussing on the cross-cutting functionalities characterizing the automation domain, may help the designers in the process of modelling and structuring their applications according to the specific needs. Historically, the design and verification process for complex automated industrial systems is performed in empirical way, without a clear distinction between functional and technological-implementation concepts and without a systematic method to organically deal with the complete system. Traditionally, in the field of analog and digital control design and verification through formal and simulation tools have been adopted since a long time ago, at least for multivariable and/or nonlinear controllers for complex time-driven dynamics as in the fields of vehicles, aircrafts, robots, electric drives and complex power electronics equipments. Moving to the field of logic control, typical for industrial manufacturing automation, the design and verification process is approached in a completely different way, usually very “unstructured”. No clear distinction between functions and implementations, between functional architectures and technological architectures and platforms is considered. Probably this difference is due to the different “dynamical framework”of logic control with respect to analog/digital control. As a matter of facts, in logic control discrete-events dynamics replace time-driven dynamics; hence most of the formal and mathematical tools of analog/digital control cannot be directly migrated to logic control to enlighten the distinction between functions and implementations. In addition, in the common view of application technicians, logic control design is strictly connected to the adopted implementation technology (relays in the past, software nowadays), leading again to a deep confusion among functional view and technological view. In Industrial automation software engineering, concepts as modularity, encapsulation, composability and reusability are strongly emphasized and profitably realized in the so-calledobject-oriented methodologies. Industrial automation is receiving lately this approach, as testified by some IEC standards IEC 611313, IEC 61499 which have been considered in commercial products only recently. On the other hand, in the scientific and technical literature many contributions have been already proposed to establish a suitable modelling framework for industrial automation. During last years it was possible to note a considerable growth in the exploitation of innovative concepts and technologies from ICT world in industrial automation systems. For what concerns the logic control design, Model Based Design (MBD) is being imported in industrial automation from software engineering field. Another key-point in industrial automated systems is the growth of requirements in terms of availability, reliability and safety for technological systems. In other words, the control system should not only deal with the nominal behaviour, but should also deal with other important duties, such as diagnosis and faults isolations, recovery and safety management. Indeed, together with high performance, in complex systems fault occurrences increase. This is a consequence of the fact that, as it typically occurs in reliable mechatronic systems, in complex systems such as AMS, together with reliable mechanical elements, an increasing number of electronic devices are also present, that are more vulnerable by their own nature. The diagnosis problem and the faults isolation in a generic dynamical system consists in the design of an elaboration unit that, appropriately processing the inputs and outputs of the dynamical system, is also capable of detecting incipient faults on the plant devices, reconfiguring the control system so as to guarantee satisfactory performance. The designer should be able to formally verify the product, certifying that, in its final implementation, it will perform itsrequired function guarantying the desired level of reliability and safety; the next step is that of preventing faults and eventually reconfiguring the control system so that faults are tolerated. On this topic an important improvement to formal verification of logic control, fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control results derive from Discrete Event Systems theory. The aimof this work is to define a design pattern and a control architecture to help the designer of control logic in industrial automated systems. The work starts with a brief discussion on main characteristics and description of industrial automated systems on Chapter 1. In Chapter 2 a survey on the state of the software engineering paradigm applied to industrial automation is discussed. Chapter 3 presentes a architecture for industrial automated systems based on the new concept of Generalized Actuator showing its benefits, while in Chapter 4 this architecture is refined using a novel entity, the Generalized Device in order to have a better reusability and modularity of the control logic. In Chapter 5 a new approach will be present based on Discrete Event Systems for the problemof software formal verification and an active fault tolerant control architecture using online diagnostic. Finally conclusive remarks and some ideas on new directions to explore are given. In Appendix A are briefly reported some concepts and results about Discrete Event Systems which should help the reader in understanding some crucial points in chapter 5; while in Appendix B an overview on the experimental testbed of the Laboratory of Automation of University of Bologna, is reported to validated the approach presented in chapter 3, chapter 4 and chapter 5. In Appendix C some components model used in chapter 5 for formal verification are reported.

Metallische Objekte in der Größenordnung der optischen Wellenlänge zeigen Resonanzen im optischen Spektralbereich. Mit einer Kombination aus Kolloidlithographie, Metallfilmbedampfung und reaktivem Ionenstrahl¨atzen wurden Nanosicheln aus Gold bzw. Silber mit identischer Form und Orientierung in Sichelform mit einer Größe von 60nm bis 400nm hergestellt. Der Öffnungswinkel der Nanosicheln lässt sich kontinuierlich einstellen. Durch die einheitliche Orientierung lassen sich Messungen am Ensemble direkt auf das Verhalten des Einzelobjektes übertragen, wie ein Vergleich der Extinktionsspektren einer Ensemblemessung am UV/Vis/NIR-Spektrometer mit einer Einzelpartikelmessung in einem konfokalen Mikroskop zeigt. Die optische Antwort der Nanosicheln wurde als zwei-dimensionales Modell mit einer Finite Elemente Methode berechnet. Das Ergebnis sind mehrere polarisationsabhängige Resonanzen im optischen Spektrum. Diese lassen sich durch Variation des Öffnungswinkels und der Gr¨oße der Nanosichel verschieben. Durch Beleuchten lassen sich plasmonische Schwingungen anregen, die ein stark lokalisiertes Nahfeld an den Spitzen und in der Öffnung der Nanosicheln erzeugen. Das Nahfeld der Partikelresonanz wurde mit einer Fotolackmethode nachgewiesen. Die Untersuchungen am UV/Vis/NIR-Spektrometer zeigen mehrere polarisationsabhängige Resonanzen im Spektralbereich von 300 nm bis 3200 nm. Die Resonanzen der Nanosicheln lassen sich durch den Öffnungswinkel und den Durchmesser in der Größenordnung der Halbwertbreite im optischen Spektrum verschieben. In der Anwendung als Chemo- bzw. Biosensor zeigen Gold-Nanosicheln eine ähnliche Empfindlichkeit wie vergleichbare Sensoren auf der Basis von dünnen Metallstrukturen. Das Nahfeld zeichnet sich durch eine starke Lokalisierung aus und dringt, je nach Multipolordnung, zwischen 14 nm und 70 nm in die Umgebung ein. Quantenpunkte wurden an das Nahfeld der Nanosicheln gekoppelt. Die Emission der Quantenpunkte bei einer Wellenlänge von 860nm wird durch die Resonanz der Nanosicheln verstärkt. Die Nanosicheln wurden als optische Pinzette eingesetzt. Bei einer Anregung mit einem Laser bei einer Wellenlänge von 1064 nm wurden Polystyrolkolloide mit einem Durchmesser von 40 nm von den resonanten Nanosicheln eingefangen. Die Nanosicheln zeigen außergewöhnliche optische Eigenschaften, die mithilfe der Geometrieparameter über einen großen Bereich verändert werden können. Die ersten Anwendungen haben Anknüpfungspunkte zur Verwendung in der Sensorik, Fluoreszenzspektroskopie und als optische Pinzette aufgezeigt.

Con la presente tesi si è inteso studiare le possibilità applicative di una particolare tipologia strutturale dotata di isolamento sismico “di piano”, intendendosi con ciò una struttura in cui l'intero piano terra, tramite l'inserimento di opportuni elementi dissipativi isteretici ed in analogia al consueto isolamento sismico di base, agisce da “strato” di protezione passiva per i piani sovrastanti. A riguardo, fra le possibili soluzioni per realizzare effettivamente tale isolamento "di piano" è stata considerata la disposizione di particolari elementi dissipativi isteretici di controvento detti Crecent-Shaped Braces, caratterizzati da una forma bilatera o curva, tale comunque da presentare un'eccentricità non nulla fra l'asse del controvento stesso e la linea congiungente gli estremi.

The work presented in this thesis deals with complex materials, which were obtained by self-assembly of monodisperse colloidal particles, also called colloidal crystallization. Two main fields of interest were investigated, the first dealing with the fabrication of colloidal monolayers and nanostructures, which derive there from. The second turned the focus on the phononic properties of colloidal particles, crystals, and glasses. For the fabrication of colloidal monolayers a method is introduced, which is based on the sparse distribution of dry colloidal particles on a parent substrate. In the ensuing floating step the colloidal monolayer assembles readily at the three-phase-contact line, giving a 2D hexagonally ordered film under the right conditions. The unique feature of this fabrication process is an anisotropic shrinkage, which occurs alongside with the floating step. This phenomenon is exploited for the tailored structuring of colloidal monolayers, leading to designed hetero-monolayers by inkjet printing. Furthermore, the mechanical stability of the floating monolayers allows the deposition on hydrophobic substrates, which enables the fabrication of ultraflat nanostructured surfaces. Densely packed arrays of crescent shaped nanoparticles have also been synthesized. It is possible to stack those arrays in a 3D manner allowing to mutually orientate the individual layers. In a step towards 3D mesoporous materials a methodology to synthesize hierarchically structured inverse opals is introduced. The deposition of colloidal particles in the free voids of a host inverse opal allows for the fabrication of composite inverse opals on two length scales. The phononic properties of colloidal crystals and films are characterized by Brillouin light scattering (BLS). At first the resonant modes of colloidal particles consisting of polystyrene, a copolymer of methylmethacrylate and butylacrylate, or of a silica core-PMMA shell topography are investigated, giving insight into their individual mechanical properties. The infiltration of colloidal films with an index matching liquid allows measuring the phonon dispersion relation. This leads to the assignment of band gaps to the material under investigation. Here, two band gaps could be found, one originating from the fcc order in the colloidal crystal (Bragg gap), the other stemming from the vibrational eigenmodes of the colloidal particles (hybridization gap).

In dieser Arbeit wird eine detaillierte Untersuchung und Charakterisierung der Zwei-Photonen-induzierten Fluoreszenzverstärkung von organischen Farbstoffen auf plasmonischen Nanostrukturen vorgestellt. Diese Fluoreszenzverstärkung ist insbesondere für hochaufgelöste Fluoreszenzmikroskopie und Einzelmolekülspektroskopie von großer Bedeutung. Durch die Zwei-Photonen-Anregung resultiert eine Begrenzung des Absorptionsprozesses auf das fokale Volumen. In Kombination mit dem elektrischen Nahfeld der Nanostrukturen als Anregungsquelle entsteht eine noch stärkere Verringerung des Anregungsvolumens auf eine Größe unterhalb der Beugungsgrenze. Dies erlaubt die selektive Messung ausgewählter Farbstoffe. Durch die Herstellung der Nanopartikel mittels Kolloidlithografie wird eine definierte, reproduzierbare Geometrie erhalten. Polymermultischichten dienen als Abstandshalter, um die Farbstoffe an einer exakten Distanz zum Metall zu positionieren. Durch die kovalente Anbindung des Farbstoffs an die oberste Schicht wird eine gleichmäßige Verteilung des Farbstoffs in geringer Konzentration erhalten. rnEs wird eine Verstärkung der Fluoreszenz um den Faktor 30 für Farbstoffe auf Goldellipsen detektiert, verglichen mit Farbstoffen außerhalb des Nahfelds. Sichelförmige Nanostrukturen erzeugen eine Verstärkung von 120. Dies belegt, dass das Ausmaß der Fluoreszenzverstärkung entscheidend von der Stärke des elektrischen Nahfelds der Nanostruktur abhängt. Auch das Material der Nanostruktur ist hierbei von Bedeutung. So erzeugen Silberellipsen eine 1,5-fach höhere Fluoreszenzverstärkung als identische Goldellipsen. Distanzabhängige Fluoreszenzmessungen zeigen, dass die Zwei-Photonen-angeregte Fluoreszenzverstärkung an strukturspezifischen Abständen zum Metall maximiert wird. Elliptische Strukturen zeigen ein Maximum bei einem Abstand von 8 nm zum Metall, wohingegen bei sichelförmigen Nanostrukturen die höchste Fluoreszenzintensität bei 12 nm gemessen wird. Bei kleineren Abständen unterliegt der Farbstoff einem starken Löschprozess, sogenanntes Quenching. Dieses konkurriert mit dem Verstärkungsprozess, wodurch es zu einer geringen Nettoverstärkung kommt. Hat die untersuchte Struktur Dimensionen größer als das Auflösungsvermögen des Mikroskops, ist eine direkte Visualisierung des elektrischen Nahfelds der Nanostruktur möglich. rnrnEin weiterer Fokus dieser Arbeit lag auf der Herstellung neuartiger Nanostrukturen durch kolloidlithografische Methoden. Gestapelte Dimere sichelförmiger Nanostrukturen mit exakter vertikaler Ausrichtung und einem Separationsabstand von etwa 10 nm wurden hergestellt. Die räumliche Nähe der beiden Strukturen führt zu einem Kopplungsprozess, der neue optische Resonanzen hervorruft. Diese können als Superpositionen der Plasmonenmoden der einzelnen Sicheln beschrieben werden. Ein Hybridisierungsmodell wird angewandt, um die spektralen Unterschiede zu erklären. Computersimulationen belegen die zugrunde liegende Theorie und erweitern das Modell um experimentell nicht aufgelöste Resonanzen. rnWeiterhin wird ein neuer Herstellungsprozess für sichelförmige Nanostrukturen vorgestellt, der eine präzise Formanpassung ermöglicht. Hierdurch kann die Lage der Plasmonenresonanz exakt justiert werden. Korrelationen der geometrischen Daten mit den Resonanzwellenlängen tragen zum grundlegenden Verständnis der Plasmonenresonanzen bei. Die vorgestellten Resultate wurden mittels Computersimulationen verifiziert. Der Fabrikationsprozess erlaubt die Herstellung von Dimeren sichelförmiger Nanostrukturen in einer Ebene. Durch die räumliche Nähe überlappen die elektrischen Nahfelder, wodurch es zu kopplungs-induzierten Shifts der Plasmonenresonanzen kommt. Der Unterschied zu theoretisch berechneten ungekoppelten Nanosicheln kann auch bei den gegenüberliegenden sichelförmigen Nanostrukturen mit Hilfe des Plasmonenhybridisierungsmodells erklärt werden.

This project consists of a proposed curriculum for a semester-long, community-based workshop for LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual or ally, "+" indicating other identifications that deviate from heterosexual) youth ages 16-18. The workshop focuses on an exploration of LGBTQIA+ identity and community through discussion and collaborative rhetorical analysis of visual and social media. Informed by queer theory and history, studies on youth work, and visual media studies and incorporating rhetorical criticism as well as liberatory pedagogy and community literacy practices, the participation-based design of the workshop seeks to involve participants in selection of media texts, active analytical viewership, and multimodal response. The workshop is designed to engage participants in reflection on questions of individual and collective responsibility and agency as members and allies of various communities. The goal of the workshop is to strengthen participants' abilities to analyze the complex ways in which television, film, and social media influence their own and others’ perceptions of issues surrounding queer identities. As part of the reflective process, participants are challenged to consider how they can in turn actively and collaboratively respond to and potentially help to shape these perceptions. My project report details the theoretical framework, pedagogical rationale, methods of text selection and critical analysis, and guidelines for conduct that inform and structure the workshop.

Los fenómenos aeroelásticos son relativamente frecuentes en las construcciones civiles modernas como edificios de oficinas, terminales de aeropuertos o fábricas. En este tipo de arquitectura aparecen con frecuencia estructuras flexibles sometidas a la acción del viento, como por ejemplo persianas formadas por láminas con distintos perfiles. Uno de estos perfiles es el perfil en Z, formado por un elemento central y dos alas laterales. Las inestabilidades de tipo galope se determinan en la práctica utilizando el criterio Glauert-Den Hartog. Este criterio precisa de la predicción exacta de la dependencia de los coeficientes aerodinámicos del ángulo de ataque. En esta tesis se presenta un estudio sistemático, tanto por métodos experimentales como numéricos de una familia completa de perfiles en Z que permite determinar sus regiones de inestabilidad frente al galope. Los análisis numéricos han sido validados con ensayos estáticos realizados en túnel de viento. Para la parte numérica se ha utilizado el código DLR TAU, que es un código de amplia utilización en la industria aeronáutica europea. En esta tesis se enfoca sobre todo a la predicción del galope en este tipo de perfiles en Z. Los resultados se presentan en forma de mapas de estabilidad. A lo largo del trabajo se realizan también comparaciones entre resultados numéricos y experimentales para varios niveles de detalle de las mallas empleadas y diversos modelos de turbulencia. ABSTRACT Aeroelastic effects are relatively common in the design of modern civil constructions such as office blocks, airport terminal buildings, and factories. Typical flexible structures exposed to the action of wind are shading devices, normally slats or louvers. A typical cross-section for such elements is a Z-shaped profile,made out of a central web and two-sidewings. Galloping instabilities are often determined in practice using the Glauert-DenHartog criterion.This criterion relies on accurate predictions of the dependence of the aerodynamic force coefficients with the angle of attack. The results of a parametric analysis based on both experimental and numerical analysis and performed on different Z-shaped louvers to determine translational galloping instability regions are presented in this thesis. These numerical analysis results have been validated with a parametric analysis of Z-shaped profiles based on static wind tunnel tests. In order to perform this validation, the DLR TAU Code, which is a standard code within the European aeronautical industry, has been used. This study highlights the focus on the numerical prediction of the effect of galloping, which is shown in a visible way, through stability maps. Comparisons between numerical and experimental data are presented with respect to various meshes and turbulence models.

Esta tesis considera dos tipos de aplicaciones del diseño óptico: óptica formadora de imagen por un lado, y óptica anidólica (nonimaging) o no formadora de imagen, por otro. Las ópticas formadoras de imagen tienen como objetivo la obtención de imágenes de puntos del objeto en el plano de la imagen. Por su parte, la óptica anidólica, surgida del desarrollo de aplicaciones de concentración e iluminación, se centra en la transferencia de energía en forma de luz de forma eficiente. En general, son preferibles los diseños ópticos que den como resultado sistemas compactos, para ambos tipos de ópticas (formadora de imagen y anidólica). En el caso de los sistemas anidólicos, una óptica compacta permite tener costes de producción reducidos. Hay dos razones: (1) una óptica compacta presenta volúmenes reducidos, lo que significa que se necesita menos material para la producción en masa; (2) una óptica compacta es pequeña y ligera, lo que ahorra costes en el transporte. Para los sistemas ópticos de formación de imagen, además de las ventajas anteriores, una óptica compacta aumenta la portabilidad de los dispositivos, que es una gran ventaja en tecnologías de visualización portátiles, tales como cascos de realidad virtual (HMD del inglés Head Mounted Display). Esta tesis se centra por tanto en nuevos enfoques de diseño de sistemas ópticos compactos para aplicaciones tanto de formación de imagen, como anidólicas. Los colimadores son uno de los diseños clásicos dentro la óptica anidólica, y se pueden utilizar en aplicaciones fotovoltaicas y de iluminación. Hay varios enfoques a la hora de diseñar estos colimadores. Los diseños convencionales tienen una relación de aspecto mayor que 0.5. Con el fin de reducir la altura del colimador manteniendo el área de iluminación, esta tesis presenta un diseño de un colimador multicanal. En óptica formadora de imagen, las superficies asféricas y las superficies sin simetría de revolución (o freeform) son de gran utilidad de cara al control de las aberraciones de la imagen y para reducir el número y tamaño de los elementos ópticos. Debido al rápido desarrollo de sistemas de computación digital, los trazados de rayos se pueden realizar de forma rápida y sencilla para evaluar el rendimiento del sistema óptico analizado. Esto ha llevado a los diseños ópticos modernos a ser generados mediante el uso de diferentes técnicas de optimización multi-paramétricas. Estas técnicas requieren un buen diseño inicial como punto de partida para el diseño final, que será obtenido tras un proceso de optimización. Este proceso precisa un método de diseño directo para superficies asféricas y freeform que den como resultado un diseño cercano al óptimo. Un método de diseño basado en ecuaciones diferenciales se presenta en esta tesis para obtener un diseño óptico formado por una superficie freeform y dos superficies asféricas. Esta tesis consta de cinco capítulos. En Capítulo 1, se presentan los conceptos básicos de la óptica formadora de imagen y de la óptica anidólica, y se introducen las técnicas clásicas del diseño de las mismas. El Capítulo 2 describe el diseño de un colimador ultra-compacto. La relación de aspecto ultra-baja de este colimador se logra mediante el uso de una estructura multicanal. Se presentará su procedimiento de diseño, así como un prototipo fabricado y la caracterización del mismo. El Capítulo 3 describe los conceptos principales de la optimización de los sistemas ópticos: función de mérito y método de mínimos cuadrados amortiguados. La importancia de un buen punto de partida se demuestra mediante la presentación de un mismo ejemplo visto a través de diferentes enfoques de diseño. El método de las ecuaciones diferenciales se presenta como una herramienta ideal para obtener un buen punto de partida para la solución final. Además, diferentes técnicas de interpolación y representación de superficies asféricas y freeform se presentan para el procedimiento de optimización. El Capítulo 4 describe la aplicación del método de las ecuaciones diferenciales para un diseño de un sistema óptico de una sola superficie freeform. Algunos conceptos básicos de geometría diferencial son presentados para una mejor comprensión de la derivación de las ecuaciones diferenciales parciales. También se presenta un procedimiento de solución numérica. La condición inicial está elegida como un grado de libertad adicional para controlar la superficie donde se forma la imagen. Basado en este enfoque, un diseño anastigmático se puede obtener fácilmente y se utiliza como punto de partida para un ejemplo de diseño de un HMD con una única superficie reflectante. Después de la optimización, dicho diseño muestra mejor rendimiento. El Capítulo 5 describe el método de las ecuaciones diferenciales ampliado para diseños de dos superficies asféricas. Para diseños ópticos de una superficie, ni la superficie de imagen ni la correspondencia entre puntos del objeto y la imagen pueden ser prescritas. Con esta superficie adicional, la superficie de la imagen se puede prescribir. Esto conduce a un conjunto de tres ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias implícitas. La solución numérica se puede obtener a través de cualquier software de cálculo numérico. Dicho procedimiento también se explica en este capítulo. Este método de diseño da como resultado una lente anastigmática, que se comparará con una lente aplanática. El diseño anastigmático converge mucho más rápido en la optimización y la solución final muestra un mejor rendimiento. ABSTRACT We will consider optical design from two points of view: imaging optics and nonimaging optics. Imaging optics focuses on the imaging of the points of the object. Nonimaging optics arose from the development of concentrators and illuminators, focuses on the transfer of light energy, and has wide applications in illumination and concentration photovoltaics. In general, compact optical systems are necessary for both imaging and nonimaging designs. For nonimaging optical systems, compact optics use to be important for reducing cost. The reasons are twofold: (1) compact optics is small in volume, which means less material is needed for mass-production; (2) compact optics is small in size and light in weight, which saves cost in transportation. For imaging optical systems, in addition to the above advantages, compact optics increases portability of devices as well, which contributes a lot to wearable display technologies such as Head Mounted Displays (HMD). This thesis presents novel design approaches of compact optical systems for both imaging and nonimaging applications. Collimator is a typical application of nonimaging optics in illumination, and can be used in concentration photovoltaics as well due to the reciprocity of light. There are several approaches for collimator designs. In general, all of these approaches have an aperture diameter to collimator height not greater than 2. In order to reduce the height of the collimator while maintaining the illumination area, a multichannel design is presented in this thesis. In imaging optics, aspheric and freeform surfaces are useful in controlling image aberrations and reducing the number and size of optical elements. Due to the rapid development of digital computing systems, ray tracing can be easily performed to evaluate the performance of optical system. This has led to the modern optical designs created by using different multi-parametric optimization techniques. These techniques require a good initial design to be a starting point so that the final design after optimization procedure can reach the optimum solution. This requires a direct design method for aspheric and freeform surface close to the optimum. A differential equation based design method is presented in this thesis to obtain single freeform and double aspheric surfaces. The thesis comprises of five chapters. In Chapter 1, basic concepts of imaging and nonimaging optics are presented and typical design techniques are introduced. Readers can obtain an understanding for the following chapters. Chapter 2 describes the design of ultra-compact collimator. The ultra-low aspect ratio of this collimator is achieved by using a multichannel structure. Its design procedure is presented together with a prototype and its evaluation. The ultra-compactness of the device has been approved. Chapter 3 describes the main concepts of optimizing optical systems: merit function and Damped Least-Squares method. The importance of a good starting point is demonstrated by presenting an example through different design approaches. The differential equation method is introduced as an ideal tool to obtain a good starting point for the final solution. Additionally, different interpolation and representation techniques for aspheric and freeform surface are presented for optimization procedure. Chapter 4 describes the application of differential equation method in the design of single freeform surface optical system. Basic concepts of differential geometry are presented for understanding the derivation of partial differential equations. A numerical solution procedure is also presented. The initial condition is chosen as an additional freedom to control the image surface. Based on this approach, anastigmatic designs can be readily obtained and is used as starting point for a single reflective surface HMD design example. After optimization, the evaluation shows better MTF. Chapter 5 describes the differential equation method extended to double aspheric surface designs. For single optical surface designs, neither image surface nor the mapping from object to image can be prescribed. With one more surface added, the image surface can be prescribed. This leads to a set of three implicit ordinary differential equations. Numerical solution can be obtained by MATLAB and its procedure is also explained. An anastigmatic lens is derived from this design method and compared with an aplanatic lens. The anastigmatic design converges much faster in optimization and the final solution shows better performance.

HIV integrase, the enzyme that inserts the viral DNA into the host chromosome, has no mammalian counterpart, making it an attractive target for antiviral drug design. As one of the three enzymes produced by HIV, it can be expected that inhibitors of this enzyme will complement the therapeutic use of HIV protease and reverse transcriptase inhibitors. We have determined the structure of a complex of the HIV-1 integrase core domain with a novel inhibitor, 5ClTEP, 1-(5-chloroindol-3-yl)-3-hydroxy-3-(2H-tetrazol-5-yl)-propenone, to 2.1-Å resolution. The inhibitor binds centrally in the active site of the integrase and makes a number of close contacts with the protein. Only minor changes in the protein accompany inhibitor binding. This inhibitor complex will provide a platform for structure-based design of an additional class of inhibitors for antiviral therapy.

Background: We introduced a series of computer-supported workshops in our undergraduate statistics courses, in the hope that it would help students to gain a deeper understanding of statistical concepts. This raised questions about the appropriate design of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in which such an approach had to be implemented. Therefore, we investigated two competing software design models for VLEs. In the first system, all learning features were a function of the classical VLE. The second system was designed from the perspective that learning features should be a function of the course's core content (statistical analyses), which required us to develop a specific-purpose Statistical Learning Environment (SLE) based on Reproducible Computing and newly developed Peer Review (PR) technology. Objectives: The main research question is whether the second VLE design improved learning efficiency as compared to the standard type of VLE design that is commonly used in education. As a secondary objective we provide empirical evidence about the usefulness of PR as a constructivist learning activity which supports non-rote learning. Finally, this paper illustrates that it is possible to introduce a constructivist learning approach in large student populations, based on adequately designed educational technology, without subsuming educational content to technological convenience. Methods: Both VLE systems were tested within a two-year quasi-experiment based on a Reliable Nonequivalent Group Design. This approach allowed us to draw valid conclusions about the treatment effect of the changed VLE design, even though the systems were implemented in successive years. The methodological aspects about the experiment's internal validity are explained extensively. Results: The effect of the design change is shown to have substantially increased the efficiency of constructivist, computer-assisted learning activities for all cohorts of the student population under investigation. The findings demonstrate that a content-based design outperforms the traditional VLE-based design. © 2011 Wessa et al.
