Ternary and binary gradient systems have been developed for the high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of complex pigment distributions typical of natural samples. Improved chromatographic resolution reveals significantly more pigment components in extracts from a sediment (Priest Pot, Cumbria, UK), a microbial mat (les Salines de la Trinital, South Catalonia, Spain) and a culture (C. phaeobacteroides) including novel bacteriochlorophyll derivatives. The methods developed are directly suited to LC–MS analysis and the automated acquisition of MS/MS data for pigments.

An in vitro method of determining the activity of antibiotics in combination which is simple and convenient to perform and which could be used routinely in clinical microbiology laboratories is desirable. We investigated the activity, against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia complex clinical isolates, of ceftazidime and tobramycin in combination using a broth macrodilution sensitivity method based on breakpoint minimum inhibitory concentrations and compared the results obtained using this method with those obtained using the microtitre checkerboard method. There was good agreement in interpretation of results between the two methods for both P. aeruginosa (90%) and B. cepacia complex isolates (70%) with tobramycin and for P. aeruginosa isolates (70%) with ceftazidime. As the breakpoint combination sensitivity testing method employs only four tubes and does not require initial determination of individual antibiotic minimum inhibitory concentrations, it is simpler and more convenient for determining the activity of antibiotics in combination than the microtitre checkerboard method. The use of this method in routine microbiology laboratories to determine the activity of antibiotic combinations against clinical isolates should optimise treatment of infection by ensuring that appropriate antibiotic combinations are prescribed. Identification of Rhizoctonia solani, R. oryzae and R. oryzae-sativae, components of the rice sheath disease complex, is extremely difficult and often inaccurate and as a result may hinder the success of extensive breeding programmes throughout Asia. In this study, primers designed from unique regions within the rDNA internal transcribed spacers have been used to develop a rapid PCR-based diagnostic test to provide an accurate identification of the species on rice. Tests on the specificity of the primers concerned showed that they provide the means for accurate identification of the Rhizoctonia species responsible for sheath diseases in rice.

Scalability and efficiency of on-chip communication of emerging Multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) are critical design considerations. Conventional bus based interconnection schemes no longer fit for MPSoC with a large number of cores. Networks-on-Chip (NoC) is widely accepted as the next generation interconnection scheme for large scale MPSoC. The increase of MPSoC complexity requires fast and accurate system-level modeling techniques for rapid modeling and veri-fication of emerging MPSoCs. However, the existing modeling methods are limited in delivering the essentials of timing accuracy and simulation speed. This paper proposes a novel system-level Networks-on-Chip (NoC) modeling method, which is based on SystemC and TLM2.0 and capable of delivering timing accuracy close to cycle accurate modeling techniques at a significantly lower simulation cost. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the proposed method. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper aims to present a contrastive approach between three different ways of building concepts after proving the similar syntactic possibilities that coexist in terms. However, from the semantic point of view we can see that each language family has a different distribution in meaning. But the most important point we try to show is that the differences found in the psychological process when communicating concepts should guide the translator and the terminologist in the target text production and the terminology planning process. Differences between languages in the information transmission process are due to the different roles the different types of knowledge play. We distinguish here the analytic-descriptive knowledge and the analogical knowledge among others. We also state that none of them is the best when determining the correctness of a term, but there has to be adequacy criteria in the selection process. This concept building or term building success is important when looking at the linguistic map of the information society.

A simple and efficient method for determining the complex permittivity of dielectric materials from both reflected and transmitted signals is presented. It is also novel because the technique is implemented using two pyramidal horns without any focusing mechanisms. The dielectric constant of a noninteractive and distributive (NID) mixture of dielectrics is also determined

A large and complex IT project may involve multiple organizations and be constrained within a temporal period. An organization is a system comprising of people, activities, processes, information, resources and goals. Understanding and modelling such a project and its interrelationship with relevant organizations are essential for organizational project planning. This paper introduces the problem articulation method (PAM) as a semiotic method for organizational infrastructure modelling. PAM offers a suite of techniques, which enables the articulation of the business, technical and organizational requirements, delivering an infrastructural framework to support the organization. It works by eliciting and formalizing (e. g. processes, activities, relationships, responsibilities, communications, resources, agents, dependencies and constraints) and mapping these abstractions to represent the manifestation of the "actual" organization. Many analysts forgo organizational modelling methods and use localized ad hoc and point solutions, but this is not amenable for organizational infrastructures modelling. A case study of the infrared atmospheric sounding interferometer (IASI) will be used to demonstrate the applicability of PAM, and to examine its relevancy and significance in dealing with the innovation and changes in the organizations.

This paper details a strategy for modifying the source code of a complex model so that the model may be used in a data assimilation context, {and gives the standards for implementing a data assimilation code to use such a model}. The strategy relies on keeping the model separate from any data assimilation code, and coupling the two through the use of Message Passing Interface (MPI) {functionality}. This strategy limits the changes necessary to the model and as such is rapid to program, at the expense of ultimate performance. The implementation technique is applied in different models with state dimension up to $2.7 \times 10^8$. The overheads added by using this implementation strategy in a coupled ocean-atmosphere climate model are shown to be an order of magnitude smaller than the addition of correlated stochastic random errors necessary for some nonlinear data assimilation techniques.

Modern medical imaging techniques enable the acquisition of in vivo high resolution images of the vascular system. Most common methods for the detection of vessels in these images, such as multiscale Hessian-based operators and matched filters, rely on the assumption that at each voxel there is a single cylinder. Such an assumption is clearly violated at the multitude of branching points that are easily observed in all, but the Most focused vascular image studies. In this paper, we propose a novel method for detecting vessels in medical images that relaxes this single cylinder assumption. We directly exploit local neighborhood intensities and extract characteristics of the local intensity profile (in a spherical polar coordinate system) which we term as the polar neighborhood intensity profile. We present a new method to capture the common properties shared by polar neighborhood intensity profiles for all the types of vascular points belonging to the vascular system. The new method enables us to detect vessels even near complex extreme points, including branching points. Our method demonstrates improved performance over standard methods on both 2D synthetic images and 3D animal and clinical vascular images, particularly close to vessel branching regions. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of SiO2:metal (Ni, Co, Ag, and Fe) nanocomposites processed by the polymerizable complex method. The polymeric precursor solutions obtained were characterized by means of FT-Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The results show the formation of a hybrid polymer with carbon and silicon in the macromolecule chain and the transition metal cation arrested within this polymeric chain. The nanocomposites are formed during the controlled polymeric precursor pyrolysis. The reduction of the metal cation is promoted by the CO/CO2 atmosphere resulting from the pyrolysis of the organic material. Microstructural characterization, performed by TEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD), showed that the nanocomposites are formed by metal nanoparticles embedded in a amorphous matrix formed by SiO2 and carbon. In the SiO2:Fe system, Fe3C was also detected by XRD.

In this paper, natural frequencies were analyzed (axial, torsional and flexural) and frequency response of a vertical rotor with a hard disk at the edge through the classical modal and complex analysis. The equation that rules the movement was obtained through the Lagrangian formulation. The model considered the effects of bending, torsion and axial deformation of the shaft, besides the gravitational and gyroscopic effects. The finite element method was used to discretize the structure into hollow cylindrical elements with 12 degrees of freedom. Mass, stiffness and gyroscopic matrices were explained consistently. The classical modal analysis, usually applied to stationary structures, does not consider an important characteristic of rotating machinery which are the methods of forward and backward whirl. Initially, through the traditional modal analysis, axial and torsional natural frequencies were obtained in a static shaft, since they do not suffer the influence of gyroscopic effects. Later research was performed by complex modal analysis. This type of tool, based on the use of complex coordinates to describe the dynamic behavior of rotating shaft, allows the decomposition of the system in two submodes, backward and forward. Thus, it is possible to clearly visualize that the orbit and direction of the precessional motion around the line of the rotating shaft is not deformed. A finite element program was developed using MATLAB (TM) and numerical simulations were performed to validate this model. Natural frequencies and directional frequency forced response (dFRF) were obtained using the complex modal analysis for a simple vertical rotor and also for a typical drill string used in the construction of oil wells.
