In order to determine the shear parameters of the forearc sedimentary strata drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 186, West Pacific Seismic Network, Japan Trench, eight whole-round samples were selected from different depths in the drilled sections of Sites 1150 and 1151. Whereas Site 1150 lays above the seismically active part of the subduction zone, Site 1151 is situated in an aseismic zone. The aim of the triaxial tests was, apart from determination of the static stress strain behavior of the sediments, to test the hypothesis that the static stress strain parameter could differ for each sites. In order to simulate undrained deformation conditions according to the high clay mineral content of the strata, consolidated undrained shear tests were performed in a triaxial testing setup. Measurements of water content, grain density, organic content, and microtextural investigations under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) accompanied the compression experiments. After the saturation and consolidation stages were completed, failure occurred in the compression stage of the experiments at peak strengths of 280-7278 kPa. The stiffness moduli calculated for each sample from differential stress vs. strain curves show a linear relationship with depth and range between 181 and 5827 kPa. Under the SEM, the artificial fault planes of the tested specimen only show partial alignment of clay minerals because of the high content of microfossils.

We examined diatom preservation patterns in Pliocene age sediments of Jane Basin (ODP Site 697) and compared them with diatom distribution in more northerly sites at various sectors of the Southern Ocean. Our data from Site 697, as well as other sites from around the Southern Ocean, support the view that there was significant ice growth on Antarctica during the late Pliocene. DSDP Site 514 in the Atlantic sector shows increased relative abundance of Eucampia antarctica, an ice-related form, in the upper part of the Gauss Chron with a larger increase just above it. With one exception, all sites included in the present study show increased relative abundance of E. antarctica in the upper part of the Gauss. Our view that there was ice growth on Antarctica during the late Gauss Chron is supported by the results from ODP Site 697. While diatoms are present and percent opal is high in the early and middle Gauss Chron (suggesting more open-ocean conditions), late Gauss sediments contain low percentages of opal and few or no diatoms. This is also true for the early Matuyama Chron. If we accept spring and summer sea-ice cover as the major suppressant of diatom productivity in the Southern Ocean, then we conclude that sea-ice covered the region around Site 697 through much of the year during this interval. Further, the absence of diatoms and the low percentages of opal in middle and late Matuyama chron sediments suggests increased sea-ice cover over the Jane Basin during this time. Although warmer openocean intervals are inferred for intervals near the Olduvai and Jaramillo Subchrons, most of the Matuyama Chron was marked by extensive sea-ice cover with low seasonal contrast. Our results for the early part of the Brunhes Chron are similar, at least for the Jane Basin. During this time, sea-ice cover over the basin apparently extended well into the growing season. In contrast, the later Brunhes Chron is marked by alternating open water (during the growing season) and extensive, almost year-round, sea-ice.

Oxygen isotope records, radiocarbon AMS data, carbonate and opal stratigraphy, sediment magnetic susceptibility, tephrachronology, and paleontological results were used to obtain detailed sediment stratigraphy and an age model for the studied cores. For studying sea-ice sedimentation an analysis of lithogenic grain number in >0.15 mm grain size fraction of bottom sediments was carried out. For quantitative estimation of intensity ice-rafting debris sedimentation number of IRD particles per sq cm per ka was calculated. Obtained results allowed to plot IRD AR distribution for the first oxygen isotope stage (0-12.5 14C ka, 14C) and for the second stage (12.5-24 14C ka). The first stage was subdivided into the latest deglaciation and the beginning of Holocene (6-12.5 14C ka) (transitive period), when the sea level was changing significantly, and the second part of Holocene (0-6 14C ka), when climate conditions and the sea level were similar to modern estimates. Data clearly show strong increase in ice formation in the glacial Sea of Okhotsk and its extent in the middle part of the sea. Average annual duration of ice coverage during glaciation was longer than that for interglaciation. However the sea ice cover was not continuous all the year round and disappeared in summer time except the far northwestern part of the sea.

Pore water was collected from each of 10 sites during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 168 on the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. These ten sites delineate a transect perpendicular to the present ridge axis and span a crustal age of 0.86-3.59 Ma. At nine of the ten sites the entire sediment section, which ranged from 41.3 to 613.8 m thick, was cored and attempts were made to recover at least one whole round of sediment per section of core for extraction of pore water. Several (2-5) whole-round sediment samples were taken from the uppermost and lowermost cores to constrain the chemical gradient near the sediment/water and sediment/basalt interfaces, respectively. Pore water was extracted from whole-round sediment core sections by squeezing only the most pristine sediment in a titanium squeezer designed by Manheim and Sayles (1974). Two additional water samples were collected in situ using the water-sampler temperature probe (WSTP; Barnes, 1988, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.110.104.1988). Both of these samples were collected in the cased section of the open borehole from ODP Hole 1026B. Formation fluids were flowing up the cased hole into the overlying deep seawater (Fisher et al., 1997, doi:10.1029/97GL01286). Detailed descriptions of the sampling methods that were used to collect fluids are given by the Shipboard Scientific Party (Davis, Fisher, Firth, et al., 1997, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.168.1997).

Productivity in the Arabian Sea is one of the highest in the world. It is controlled by seasonally reversing monsoonal wind-driven upwelling of nutrient-rich deeper waters which fuel phytoplankton growth. The detailed history of upwelling-induced productivity in the eastern Arabian Sea is unknown. Here we present paleoproductivity records from a composite sediment core at the millennial scale during the last 80 kyr B.P. These records are based on relative abundance counts of planktonic foraminifera and organic carbon contents, which are shown to mainly vary in concert. The eastern Arabian Sea upwelling-induced productivity was higher in the glacial period than in the Holocene, but it fell repeatedly on millennial timescales. These productivity declines occurred during cold events in the North Atlantic region, with the most pronounced changes prevailing during the Heinrich events. Hence, seasonal monsoon winds that drive upwelling-induced productivity in the east were weak when the North Atlantic was cold. These weak winds resulted in stratification of the water column, comparable to today's Arabian Sea stratification in the intermonsoonal period. Combining the new eastern with published western Arabian Sea results shows that the entire biological factory was severely diminished during the North Atlantic Heinrich events, and the seasonal productivity change in the Arabian Sea monsoon system was reduced with year-round low productivity.

The Indian monsoon system, as recorded by ocean-floor biota (benthic foraminifera) at Ocean Drilling Program Site 758 in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean, has varied dramatically over the past 5.5 m.y., long after the onset of the monsoons at 10-8 Ma. Benthic foraminifera that thrive with high productivity year-round were common before the formation of Northern Hemisphere continental ice sheets ca. 3.1-2.5 Ma, indicating that the summer (southwest) monsoon had high intensity and long seasonal duration. Ca. 2.8 Ma benthic faunas became dominated by taxa that flourish with a seasonally strongly fluctuating food supply, indicating that the northeast (winter) monsoon, during which primary productivity is relatively low, increased in duration and strength to form a system similar to that of today. The change occurred coeval with the initiation of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation, documenting a close link between the development of the Indian monsoon and Northern Hemisphere glaciation.

Sediment whole-round cores from a dedicated hole (798B) were obtained for detailed microbiological analysis, down to 518 m below the seafloor (mbsf). These sediments have characteristic bacterial profiles in the top 6 mbsf, with high but rapidly decreasing bacterial populations (total and dividing bacteria, and concentrations of different types of viable heterotrophic bacteria) and potential bacterial activities. Rates of thymidine incorporation into bacterial DNA and anaerobic sulfate reduction are high in the surface sediments and decrease rapidly down to 3 mbsf. Methanogenesis from CO2/H2 peaks below the maximum in sulfate reduction and although it decreases markedly down the core, is present at low rates at all but one depth. Consistent with these activities is the removal of pore-water sulfate, methane gas production, and accumulation of reduced sulfide species. Rates of decrease in bacterial populations slow down below 6 mbsf, and there are some distinct increases in bacterial populations and activities that continue over considerable depth intervals. These include a large and significant increase in total heterotrophic bacteria below 375 mbsf, which corresponds to an increase in the total bacterial population, bacterial viability, a small increase in potential rates of sulfate reduction, and the presence of thermogenic methane and other gases. Bacterial distributions seem to be controlled by the availability of terminal electron acceptors (e.g., sulfate), the bioavailability of organic carbon (which may be related to the dark/light bands within the sediment), and biological and geothermal methane production. Significant bacterial populations are present even in the deepest samples (518 mbsf) and hence it seems likely that bacteria may continue to be present and active much deeper than the sediments studied here. These results confirm and extend our previous results of bacterial activity within deep sediments of the Peru Margin from Leg 112, and to our knowledge this is the first comprehensive report of the presence of active bacterial populations from the sediment surface to in excess of 500 mbsf and sediments > 4 m.y. old.

This paper presents the results of the scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of quartz grains from a selection of samples at Site 1166. Ocean Drilling Program Leg 188 drilled Site 1166 on the Prydz Bay continental shelf, Antarctica, to document onset and fluctuations of East-Antarctic glaciation. This site recovered Upper Pliocene-Holocene glacial sediments directly above Cretaceous through Lower Oligocene sediments recording the transition from preglacial to early glacial conditions. SEM analysis of quartz grains at Site 1166 was used to characterize the glacial and preglacial sediments by their diagnostic textures. Angular edges, edge abrasion as well as arcuate to straight steps, are the most frequent features in glacial deposits. The highest frequency of grains with round edges is present in Middle-Late Eocene fluvio-deltaic sands. However, angular outlines, fractured plates with subparallel linear fractures and edge abrasion indicating glacier influence are also present. Preglacial carbonaceous mudstone and laminated gray claystone show distinctive high relief quartz grains and some chemical weathering on grain surfaces. The results of the microtextural analysis of quartz grains are used to verify some critical periods of ice sheet evolution, such as the transition from the East Antarctic preglacial to glacial conditions on the continental shelf from Middle/Late Eocene to Late Eocene/Early Oligocene time.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a fast, low-cost, nondestructive, and truly multielement analytical technique. The objectives of this study are to quantify the amount of Na(+) and K(+) in samples of table salt (refined, marine, and light) and to compare three different methodologies of quantification using XRF. A fundamental parameter method revealed difficulties in quantifying accurately lighter elements (Z < 22). A univariate methodology based on peak area calibration is an attractive alternative, even though additional steps of data manipulation might consume some time. Quantifications were performed with good correlations for both Na (r = 0.974) and K (r = 0.992). A partial least-squares (PLS) regression method with five latent variables was very fast. Na(+) quantifications provided calibration errors lower than 16% and a correlation of 0.995. Of great concern was the observation of high Na(+) levels in low-sodium salts. The presented application may be performed in a fast and multielement fashion, in accordance with Green Chemistry specifications.

In this work a downscaled multicommuted flow injection analysis setup for photometric determination is described. The setup consists of a flow system module and a LED based photometer, with a total internal volume of about 170 mu L The system was tested by developing an analytical procedure for the photometric determination of iodate in table salt using N,N-diethyl-henylenediamine (DPD) as the chromogenic reagent. Accuracy was accessed by applying the paired r-test between results obtained using the proposed procedure and a reference method, and no significant difference at the 95% confidence level was observed. Other profitable features, such as a low reagent consumption of 7.3 mu g DPD per determination: a linear response ranging from 0.1 up to 3.0 m IO(3)(-), a relative standard deviation of 0.9% (n = 11) for samples containing 0.5 m IO(3)(-), a detection limit of 17 mu g L(-1) IO(3)(-), a sampling throughput of 117 determination per hour, and a waste generation 600 mu L per determination, were also achieved.
