Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of disinfection by immersion in sodium perborate (50 degrees C/10 min) or microwave irradiation (650 W/6 min) on the linear dimensional change (LDC) of four reline resins (Kooliner-K, New Truliner-N, Tokuso Rebase Fast-T, Ufi Gel Hard-U) and one heat-polymerizing denture base resin (Lucitone 550-L). Methods: Specimens (50.0 mm diameter, 0.5 mm thickness) were made using a split mold with reference points, and divided into two controls and four test groups (u = 8). The distances between the points were measured on the mold (baseline readings), and compared to those obtained from the specimens after: polymerization or immersion in water (37 degrees C) for 7 days (controls); 2 or 7 cycles of disinfection by immersion or microwave irradiation. Results: the two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05) showed that microwave disinfection significantly increased the mean LDC of materials L (-1.43%), N (-1.27%) and K (-1.06%). Material N also exhibited a significant increase in LDC after two cycles of chemical disinfection (-0.73%). For U (-0.47%) and T (-0.21%) materials, no significant changes in LDC were found. Conclusions: Microwave disinfection increases the shrinkage of materials L, N, and K. The dimensional stability of resins U and T was not affected by the disinfection methods evaluated. Squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) is associated with environmental factors, especially tobacco and alcohol consumption. Genetic factors, including cyclin D1 (CCND1) polymorphism have been suggested to play an important rote in tumorigenesis and progression of UADT cancer. To investigate the relationship between CCND1 polymorphism on susceptibility for UADT cancers, 147 cancer and 135 non-cancer subjects were included in this study. CCND1 genotype at codon 242(G870A) in exon 4 was undertaken using denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) and DNA sequencing. Significant odds ratio (OR) of the AA + GA genotypes [OR = 7.5 (95% Cl: 1.4-39.7)] was observed in non-drinkers but for non-smokers a non-significant [OR = 5.4 (95% Cl: 0.9-31.4)] was found in the adjusted model. These results suggest that allele A may be a risk factor for UADT cancer, especially in non-alcoholics. However, further epidemiological studies are needed to establish the exact role of CCND1 polymorphism and the development of UADT cancers. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are applied in stem cell labeling because of their high magnetic susceptibility as compared with ordinary paramagnetic species, their low toxicity, and their ease of magnetic manipulation. The present work is the study of CD133(+) stem cell labeling by SPIONs coupled to a specific antibody (AC133), resulting in the antigenic labeling of the CD133+ stem cell, and a method was developed for the quantification of the SPION content per cell, necessary for molecular imaging optimization. Flow cytometry analysis established the efficiency of the selection process and helped determine that the CD133 cells selected by chromatographic affinity express the transmembrane glycoprotein CD133. The presence of antibodies coupled to the SPION, expressed in the cell membrane, was observed by transmission electron microscopy. Quantification of the SPION concentration in the marked cells using the ferromagnetic resonance technique resulted in a value of 1.70 x 10 (13) mol iron (9.5 pg) or 7.0 x 10 (6) nanoparticles per cell ( the measurement was carried out in a volume of 2 mu L containing about 6.16 x 10 5 pg iron, equivalent to 4.5 x 10 (11) SPIONs).

Nasopharyngeal colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) often precedes the development of nosocomial infections. In order to identify risk factors for MRSA colonization, we conducted a case-case-control study, enrolling 122 patients admitted to a medical-surgical intensive care unit (ICU). All patients had been screened for nasopharyngeal colonization with S. aureus upon admission and weekly thereafter. Two case-control studies were performed, using as cases patients who acquired colonization with MRSA and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA), respectively. For both studies, patients in whom colonization was not detected during ICU stay were selected as control subjects. Several potential risk factors were assessed in univariate and multivariable (logistic regression) analysis. MRSA and MSSA were recovered from nasopharyngeal samples from 27 and 10 patients, respectively. Independent risk factors for MRSA colonization were: length-of-stay in the ICU (Odds Ratio [OR]=1.12, 95%Confidence Interval[CI]=1.06-1.19, p<0.001) and use of ciprofloxacin (OR=5.05, 95%CI=1.38-21.90, p=0.015). The use of levofloxacin had a protective effect (OR=0.08, 95%CI=0.01-0.55, p=0.01). Colonization with MSSA was positively associated with central nervous system disease (OR=7.45, 95%CI=1.33-41.74, p=0.02) and negatively associated with age (OR=0.94, 95%CI=0.90-0.99, p=0.01). In conclusion, our study suggests a role for both cross-transmission and selective pressure of antimicrobials in the spread of MRSA.

In intubation experiments (643-1168 mg per animal), most of the stevioside administered to chickens was recovered unchanged in the excreta, and only about 2% was converted into steviol. Neither stevioside nor steviol could be found in the blood. In chronic studies (667 mg of stevioside/kg of feed) with laying hens and meat-type chickens, no significant differences were found in feed uptake, weight gain, and feed conversion as the result of stevioside administration. The egg production and egg composition of laying hens were not influenced. Most of the stevioside taken up was found untransformed in the excreta, and about 21.5% or 7.3% was converted to steviol by meat-type chickens or laying hens, respectively. No stevioside or steviol could be detected in the blood or in the eggs of the different groups of animals. In anaerobic incubation experiments with chicken excreta, only a 20% conversion of stevioside into steviol was found. No harmful effects were observed in the chronic stevioside supplementation experiments nor in the intubation experiments in which very high stevioside doses were given.

The objectives of the current study were to assess the feasibility of using stayability traits to improve fertility of Nellore cows and to examine the genetic relationship among the stayabilities at different ages. Stayability was defined as whether a cow calved every year up to the age of 5 (Stay5), 6 (Stay6), or 7 (Stay7) yr of age or more, given that she was provided the opportunity to breed. Data were analyzed based on a maximum a posteriori probit threshold model to predict breeding values on the liability scale, whereas the Gibbs sampler was used to estimate variance components. The EBV were obtained using all animals included in the pedigree or bulls with at least 10 daughters with stayability observations, and average genetic trends were obtained in the liability and transformed to the probability scale. Additional analyses were performed to study the genetic relationship among stayability traits, which were compared by contrasting results in terms of EBV and the average genetic superiority as a function of the selected proportion of sires. Heritability estimates and SD were 0.25 +/- 0.02, 0.22 +/- 0.03, and 0.28 +/- 0.03 for Stay5, Stay6, and Stay7, respectively. Average genetic trends, by year, were 0.51 +/- 0.34, and 0.38% for Stay5, Stay6, and Stay7, respectively. Estimates of EBV SD, in the probability scale, for all animals included in the pedigree and for bulls with at least 10 daughters with stayability observations were 7.98 and 12.95, 6.93 and 11.38, and 8.24 and 14.30% for Stay5, Stay6, and Stay7, respectively. A reduction in the average genetic superiorities in Stay7 would be expected if the selection were based on Stay5 or Stay6. Nonetheless, the reduction in EPD, depending on selection intensity, is on average 0.74 and 1.55%, respectively. Regressions of the sires' EBV for Stay5 and Stay6 on the sires' EBV for Stay7 confirmed these results. The heritability and genetic trend estimates for all stayability traits indicate that it is possible to improve fertility with selection based on a threshold analysis of stayability. The SD of EBV for stayability traits show that there is adequate genetic variability among animals to justify inclusion of stayability as a selection criterion. The potential linear relationship among stayability traits indicates that selection for improved female traits would be more effective by having predictions on the Stay5 trait.

We assessed the effect of a recently described mutation in the MTHFR gene (1298 A --> C) on the risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) by determining its prevalence in 190 patients with verified DVT and in age-, race- and gender-matched controls. MTHFR 1298 A --> C was found in 42.1% of patients and in 41.1% of controls. The OR for venous thrombosis was 1.07 (95% CI 0.70-1.65) for heterozygotes and 0.83 (95% CI 0.33-2.08) for homozygotes. The OR for the factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation was 3.40 (95% CI 1.22-9.48), for FII 20210 G --> A was 5.22 (95% CI 1.12-24.2) and for MTHFR 677 C --> T, 1.24 (95% CI 0.82-1.87). No significant increased risk for venous thrombosis was found when MTHFR 1298 A --> C was coinherited with FVL (OR 2.85, 95% CI 0.88-9.23), FIT 20210 G --> A (OR 7.19, 95% CT 0.87-59.4) or MTHFR 677 C --> T (OR 1.44, 95% CT 0.71-2.92). These data do not support a critical role of MTHFR 1298 A --> C in the predisposition to DVT.

The circumventricular structures of the central nervous system and nitric oxide are involved in arterial blood pressure control, and general anesthesia may stimulate the central renin-angiotensin system. We therefore investigated the central role of angiotensin 11 and nitric oxide on the regulation of systemic arterial blood pressure in conscious and anesthetized rats. METHODS: Rats with stainless steel cannulae implanted into their lateral ventricle were studied. We injected the AT(1) and AT(2) angiotensin 11 receptor antagonists, losartan and PD123319, L-NAME, 7-nitroindazole (nitric oxide synthetase inhibitors), and FK409 (nitric oxide donor agent) into the lateral ventricles. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was recorded in conscious and zoletil-anesthetized rats. RESULTS: Mean +/- (SEM) baseline MAP was 117.5 +/- 2 mm Hg. Angiotensin II injected into the brain lateral ventricle increased MAP from 136.5 +/- 2 min Hg to 138.5 +/- 4 mm Hg (Delta 16 +/- 3 mm Hg to Delta 21 +/- 3 mm Hg) for all experimental groups versus control from 116 +/- 2 mm Hg to 120 +/- 3 mm Hg (Delta 3 +/- 1 mm Hg to A5 +/- 2 mm Hg) (P < 0.05). L-NAME or 7-nitroindazole enhanced the angiotensin II pressor effect (P < 0.05). Prior injection of losartan and PD123319 decreased the angiotensin 11 pressor effect and the enhancement effect of L-NAME and 7-nitroindazole (P < 0.05). Zoletil anesthesia did not interfere with the effects of angiotensin 11, AT,, AT2 antagonists, or nitric oxide synthetase inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: Endogenous nitric oxide functions tonically as a central inhibitory modulator of the angiotensinergic system. AT, and AT2 receptors influence the angiotensin 11 central control of arterial blood pressure. Zoletil anesthesia did not interfere with these effects. (Anesth Analg 2007;105:1293-7)

This study evaluated the effectiveness of acidic low-fluoride dentifrices compared to conventional neutral dentifrices. Enamel blocks were submitted to pH cycling and treatment with slurries of dentifrices containing 0, 275, 412, 550 and 1,100 mu g F/g (pH 4.5 or 7.0), and also a commercial dentifrice (1,100 mu g F/g) and a commercial children's dentifrice (500 mu g F/ g). Variations in surface microhardness and in the mineral content in enamel after pH cycling were calculated. Enamel blocks treated with acidic dentifrices exhibited less mineral loss compared to neutral dentifrices (ANOVA; p < 0.05). The acidic dentifrices with 412 and 550 mu g F/g had the same effectiveness as the neutral 1,100-mu g F/g dentifrice and commercial 1,100-mu g F/g dentifrice. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel
