Aim: To identify how the methodology of Reflection Groups (RG) can contribute to approach social-psychological problems, so often observed as obstacles in PE efforts. The objective was also to verify the contributions from RG to the implementation of ergonomics recommendations, which were a starting point and organized group discussions. Method: A concrete case was used as an illustration, and studied in depth: RG with administration and production workers` representatives from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of a cardiologic hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. RG are temporary thinking groups, taking place outside the workplace and having delegative and consultive participation. They make use of Operative Groups, an adapted form of tripartite group, activity as an instrumental resource, group dynamic techniques and videotaping. In 2007, 31 meetings took place during paid working hours with 7 groups of different composition, ranging from 1.5 h to 3 h. Results: Additionally to the positive effects in communication and psychosocial environment, RG could also contribute to changes in interpersonal relationships, cooperation, personal and work behaviours. By dealing with aspects which could hinder the explicit task: fears, conflicts, and stereotyped beliefs and behaviours; resistance to change could be broken and group members could learn. RG allowed input about new risks; continuous information and feedback about ongoing ergonomics interventions so that immediate corrective action could be taken. The main form of participation was in administrative, organizational, and psychosocial problems which required a better clarification and identification of their real causes, commitment, and elaboration of strategies and negotiation of different stakeholders in their solution. Conclusion: RG takes advantage of homogeneous and heterogeneous groups, in face to face communication. The interactions in the groups are task-oriented (explicit task) but attaining groups` goals depends on a relational interaction (implicit task). Relevance to industry: Reflection groups can bring important contributions to ergonomics and industry because they favour the discussion, disclosure of problems and incorporation of solutions, enabling interventions in working organization, psychosocial environment and relationships in a collective and participatory approach, promoting health and social integration. Our study aims to investigate changes in electrocortical activity by observing the variations in absolute theta power in the primary somatomotor and parietal regions of the brain under three different electrical stimulation conditions: control group (without stimulation), group 24 (24 trials of stimulation) and group 36 (36 trials of stimulation). Thus, our hypothesis is that the application of different patterns of electrical stimulation will promote different states of habituation in these regions. The sample was composed of 24 healthy (absence of mental and physical impairments) students (14 male and 10 female), with ages varying from 25 to 40 years old (32.5 +/- 7.5), who are right-handed (Edinburgh Inventory). The subjects were randomly distributed into three groups: control (n = 8), G24 (n = 8) and G36 (n = 8). We use the Functional electrical stimulation (FES) equipment (NeuroCompact-2462) to stimulate the right index finger extensor muscle, while the electroencephalographic signal was simultaneously recorded. We found an interaction between condition and block factors for the C3 and P3 electrode, a condition and block main effects for the C4 electrode, and a condition main effect for the P4 electrode. Our results support the hypothesis that electrical stimulation promotes neurophysiological changes. It appears that stimulus adaptation (accommodation) of specific circuits can strengthen the brain`s ability to distinguish between and respond to such stimuli over time. Background/purpose: The introduction of the piggyback technique for reconstruction of the liver outflow in reduced-size liver transplants for pediatric patients has increased the incidence of hepatic venous outflow block (HVOB). Here, we proposed a new technique for hepatic venous reconstruction in pediatric living-donor liver transplantation. Methods: Three techniques were used: direct anastomosis of the orifice of the donor hepatic veins and the orifice of the recipient hepatic veins (group 1); triangular anastomosis after creating a wide triangular orifice in the recipient inferior vena cava at the confluence of all the hepatic veins (group 2); and a new technique, which is a wide longitudinal anastomosis performed at the anterior wall of the inferior vena cava (group 3). Results: In groups 1 and 2, the incidences of HVOB were 27.7% and 5.7%, respectively. In group 3, no patient presented HVOB (P = .001). No difference was noted between groups 2 and 3. Conclusions: Hepatic venous reconstruction in pediatric living-donor liver transplantation must be preferentially performed by using a wide longitudinal incision at the anterior wall of the recipient inferior vena cava. As an alternative technique, triangulation of the recipient inferior vena cava, including the orifices of the 3 hepatic veins, may be used. Published by Elsevier Inc.

Objective: The study compared the prevalence, correlates of functional impairment, and service utilization for eating disorders across Latinos, Asians, and African Americans living in the United States to non-Latino Whites. Method: Pooled data from the NIMH Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiological Studies (CPES; NIMH, 2007) were used. Results: The prevalence of anorexia nervosa (AN) and binge-eating disorder (BED) were similar across all groups examined, but bulimia nervosa (BN) was more prevalent among Latinos and African Americans than non-Latino Whites. Despite similar prevalence of BED among ethnic groups examined, lifetime prevalence of any binge eating (ABE) was greater among each of the ethnic minority groups in comparison to non-Latino Whites. Lifetime prevalence of mental health service utilization was lower among ethnic minority groups studied than for non-Latino Whites for respondents with a lifetime history of any eating disorder. Discussion: These findings suggest the need for clinician training and health policy interventions to achieve optimal and equitable care for eating disorders across all ethnic groups in the United States. Background: Neuropsychological deficits are often described in patients with bipolar disorder (BID). Some symptoms and/or associated characteristics of BD can be more closely associated to those cognitive impairments. We aimed to explore cognitive neuropsychological characteristics of type I bipolar patients (BPI) in terms Of lifetime Suicide attempt history. Method: We studied 39 BPI Outpatients compared with 53 healthy controls (HC) matched by age, educational and intellectual level. All Subjects were submitted to a neuropsychological assessment of executive functions, decision-making and declarative episodic memory. Results: When comparing BD1 patients, regardless of suicide attempt history or HC, we observed that bipolar patients performed worse than controls oil measures of memory, attention, executive functions and decision-making, Patients with a history of suicide attempt performed worse than non-attempters on measures of decision-making and there were a significant negative correlation between the number of suicide attempts and decision-making results (block 3 and net score). We also found significant Positive correlation between the number Of Suicide attempts and amount Of errors in Stroop Color Word Test (part 3). Limitations: The sample Studied call be considered small and a potentially confounding variable - medication status - were not controlled. Conclusion: Our results show the presence of neuropsychological deficits in memory, executive functions, attention and decision-making in BPI patients. Suicide attempts BPI scored worse than non-suicide attempt Bill oil measures of decision-making. More suicide attempts were associated with a worse decision-making process. Future research should explore the relationship between the association between this specific cognitive deficits in BPIs, serotonergic function and suicide behavior in bipolar patients as well other diagnostic groups. Objective: To examine the effects of two commercial media on the development of mouse ova fertilized in vitro to the blastocyst stage. Design: Animal model. Setting: Academic institution. Animal(s): Eight-week old, superovulated mice. Intervention(s): One-cell embryos cultured in vitro up to the blastocyst stage in potassium-enriched simplex optimized medium (KSOM) or G1/G2 medium. Main Outcome Measure(s): Blastocyst and hatching rates, total cell number count, and proportion of allocation of cells to the inner cell mass (ICM) and trophectoderm (TE). Result(s): The percentage of zygotes that developed to the blastocyst stage 96 and 120 hours after insemination was statistically significantly higher in the KSOM group. The percentage of blastocysts that partially or completely hatched by day 5 of culture was 84% and 71% for the KSOM and G1/G2 groups, respectively, showing a statistically significant difference between the groups. The mean number of ICM cells was 11.7 +/- 4.0 and 9.2 +/- 5.2 for the zygotes cultured in KSOM and G1/G2 media, respectively, revealing a statistically significantly higher cell number in the ICM of blastocysts derived from culture in KSOM medium. The ICM/TE ratio in the blastocysts cultured in KSOM or G1/G2 media was similar in both groups. Conclusion(s): Commercially available KSOM medium is superior to sequential G1/G2 media for culturing one-cell embryos up to the blastocyst stage in the mouse IVF model.

Early Alzheimer`s disease (AD) pathophysiology is characterized by synaptic changes induced by degradation products of amyloid precursor protein (APP). The exact mechanisms of such modulation are unknown. Here, we report that nanomolar concentrations of intraaxonal oligomeric (o)A beta 42, but not oA beta 40 or extracellular oA beta 42, acutely inhibited synaptic transmission at the squid giant synapse. Further characterization of this phenotype demonstrated that presynaptic calcium currents were unaffected. However, electron microscopy experiments revealed diminished docked synaptic vesicles in oA beta 42-microinjected terminals, without affecting clathrin-coated vesicles. The molecular events of this modulation involved casein kinase 2 and the synaptic vesicle rapid endocytosis pathway. These findings open the possibility of a new therapeutic target aimed at ameliorating synaptic dysfunction in AD.

GLUT is the major glucose transporter in mammalian cells. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) at GLUT1 promoter and regulatory regions have been associated to the risk of developing nephropathy in different type 1 and type 2 diabetic populations. It has been demonstrated that differences in allelic and genotypic frequencies of GLUT1 gene (SLC2A1) polymorphisms occur among different populations. Therefore, ethnic differences in distribution of GLUT1 gene polymorphisms may be an important factor in determining gene-disease association. In this study, we investigated the XbaIG > T and HaeIIIT > C polymorphisms in six different Brazilian populations: 102 individuals from Salvador population (Northern Brazil), 56 European descendants from Joinville (South Brazil), 85 Indians from Tiryi tribe (North Brazil) and 127 samples from Southern Brazil: 44 from European descendants, 42 from African descendants and 41 from Japanese descendants. Genotype frequencies from both sites did not differ significantly from those expected under the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. We verified that the allele frequencies of both polymorphisms were heterogeneous in these six Brazilian ethnic groups.

Delta 9-THC is a component of Cannabis sativa that increases food intake in animals and humans, an effect prevented by selective CB1 receptor antagonists. Cannabidiol (CBD) is another constituent of this plant that promotes several opposite neuropharmacological effects compared to Delta 9-THC. CBD mechanisms of action are still not clear, but under specific experimental conditions it can antagonize the effects of cannabinoid agonists, block the reuptake of anandamide and act as an agonist of 5-HT1A receptors. Since both the cannabinoid and serotoninergic systems have been implicated in food intake control, the aim of the present work was to investigate the effects caused by CBD on hyperphagia induced by agonists of CB1 or 5-HT1A receptors. Fed or fasted Wistar rats received intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of CBD (1, 10 and 20 mg/kg) and food intake was measured 30 min later for 1 h. Moreover, additional fed or fasted groups received, after pretreatment with CBD (20 mg/kg) or vehicle, i.p. administration of vehicle, a CBI receptor agonist WIN55,212-2 (2 mg/kg) or a 5-HT1A receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT (1 mg/kg) and were submitted to the food intake test for 1 h. CBD by itself did not change food intake in fed or fasted rats. However, it prevented the hyperphagic effects induced by WIN55,212-2 or 8-OH-DPAT. These results show that CBD can interfere with food intake changes induced by a CB1 or 5-HT1A receptor agonist, suggesting that its role as a possible food intake regulator should be further investigate.
