This is the report from the South Lancashire Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th January 1977. The report contains sections on fish mortalities at Henthorn on the 10th July, 1976, fisheries activities, fish stocking, eel fishing on estuarial waters, and infectious Pancreatic Necrosis highlighting its prevention on imports of salmonid fish and ova. The section on fish mortalities looks at fish deaths on the River Ribble caused by a discharge from Clitheroe Sewage Works. The report on fisheries activities includes information on artificial propagation and numbers of fish passing through Waddow Weir, Winckley Hall and Locks Weir between January to November 1976. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

This is the report from the Eden and District Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 11th January, 1977. The report contains sections on netting on the Solway Firth, fisheries activities, fish stocking, eel fishing on estuarial waters, and infectious Pancreatic Necrosis. The section on fisheries activities includes general information on the River Eden and Esk; fish transfers; predators; disease; fish mortalities; restocking; and information of Holmwrangle hatchery. The section on Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis looks at this fish disease highlighting its prevention on imports of salmonid fish and ova. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

This is the report from the South and West Cumberland Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 10th January, 1977. The report contains information on water resources development in West Cumbria, Branthwaite Weir regarding the construction of a fish pass, fisheries activities, fish stocking, eel fishing on estuarial waters, and infectious Pancreatic Necrosis which highlights its prevention on imports of salmonid fish and ova. The section on fisheries activities includes general information on the River Derwent; diseases; fish mortalities; Holmwrangle hatchery and land drainage works. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

This is the Fisheries survey of the River Taw 1977 report produced by South West Water Authority in 1978. The upper reaches of the River Taw were severely polluted in October 1975 and there was widespread fish mortality. A survey was carried out to assess the recovery of salmonid stocks in the affected areas. Salmon showed a rapid recovery and trout have also recovered well. Both species have been assisted by widespread stocking. Several other species were present. Salmonid and total fish biomass was high. Further stocking of salmon is not recommended and it is also suggested that stocking with trout should be discontinued.

Principal coordinates analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to determine the environmental factors associated with the decline in phytoplankton production during and after the 1977 drought for the San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary. Physical, chemical and biological data were collected semimonthly or monthly during the spring-summer between 1973 and 1982 from 15 sampling sites located throughout the Bay-Delta. A decline in phytoplankton community diversity and density during the 1977 drought and subsequent years (1978 through 1981) was described using principal coordinates analysis. The best multiple regression which described the changes in phytoplankton community succession contained the variables water temperature, wind velocity and ortho-phosphate concentration. Together these variables accounted for 61 percent of the variation in the phytoplankton community among years described by principal coordinates analysis. An increase in water temperature, wind velocity and ortho-phosphate concentration within the Bay-Delta, beginning in June 1976 and continuing through 1981, was demonstrated using weighted moving averages. From the strong association between phytoplankton community succession and climatic variables it was hypothesized that the decline in phytoplankton production during and after the 1977 drought was associated with climatic changes within the northeast Pacific.

Following the collapse of the East African Community on 30th June, 1977 Ugandan fisheries research employees who were stationed in Kenya and Tanzania were recalled by the Uganda Government. The return of these officers strengthened the staff position of the Department. Formally the Headquarters of the East African Freshwater Fisheries Research Organization (EAFFRO), the institution was re-named the Uganda Freshwater Fisheries Research Organization (UFFRO) and the Uganda Government took up the full responsibility for running and maintaining the Department. The Annual report presents activities and achievements during the reporting period 1977.

The jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus, has a prolonged spawning season and widely spread spawning grounds. The population in the coastal waters of Japan seems to be composed of several cohorts spawned seasonally from different waters. To understand its population structure along the Tsushima Warm Current, we analysed hatchdates and growth histories of fish from Kunda Bay, the southern, central and northern East China Sea (ECS), the southern Sea of Japan, and Maizuru Bay. Seven cohorts were detected from fish collected between June 2005 and June 2006 in Kunda Bay. Comparing hatchdate distributions and growth trajectories of the seven cohorts with those of the other five regional samples, we did not find that cohorts collected in Kunda Bay originated in the southern ECS. Therefore, these coastal waters of Japan appear to be significant spawning grounds for juvenile jack mackerel. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Oceanographic conditions and transport processes are often critical factors that affect the early growth, survival and recruitment of marine fishes. Sagittal otoliths were analysed to determine age and early growth for 381 jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) juveniles from Sagami Bay on the Pacific coast of Japan. Two separate hatching periods ( December and February-March) were identified. They originated from the spawning grounds in the East China Sea. Early growth and developmental rates of December-hatching fish were lower than those for February-March-hatching fish. It is likely that these differences were determined in the Kuroshio Current during transport from the spawning grounds to Sagami Bay, and the lower December water temperatures in the bay. Origin and hatch dates of juveniles in Sagami Bay were in contrast to previous research on Fukawa Bay, where April-or-later-hatching fish from spawning grounds in the coastal waters of southern Japan constituted about half of the juvenile population. Management of these two jack mackerel stocks needs to consider these differences in hatch date composition and spawning origins, as these differences could affect early growth and subsequent mortality.

Placocheilus is re-diagnosed on the basis of oromandibular structures compared to those of closely related groups. It is represented in China by three species restricted to Yunnan, namely P. caudofasciatus from the Tengtiaohe River (Nam Na), P. cryptonemus from the Nujiang Rive ( upper Salween River basin), and P. robustus, herein described as a new species from the Yuanjiang River ( Red River basin). P. robustus n. sp. is differentiated from its congeners in having a stout caudal peduncle ( depth 72.4-82.5% of its length) and the medium-sized scaleless midventral region of belly extended slightly beyond halfway from the pectoral- to pelvic-fin origin. It is further distinguished from P. caudofasciatus in having a coarsely crenulated rostral fold with 18-23 indentations on its distal margin and a smaller mental adhesive disc ( length 66.7-71.4% of its width and 37.0-43.1% of the head length).
