A polystyrene-block-poly(ferrocenylethylmethylsilane) diblock copolymer, displaying a double-gyroid morphology when self-assembled in the solid state, has been prepared with a PFEMS volume fraction phi(PFMS)=0.39 and a total molecular weight of 64 000 Da by sequential living anionic polymerisation. A block copolymer with a metal-containing block with iron and silicon in the main chain was selected due to its plasma etch resistance compared to the organic block. Self-assembly of the diblock copolymer in the bulk showed a stable, double-gyroid morphology as characterised by TEM. SAXS confirmed that the structure belonged to the Ia3d space group.

Nanostructured thermoset blends were prepared based on a bisphenol A-type epoxy resin and an amphiphilic reactive diblock copolymer, namely polyisoprene-block-poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PI-P4VP). Infrared spectra revealed that the P4VP block of the diblock copolymer reacted with the epoxy monomer. However, the non-reactive hydrophobic PI block of the diblock copolymer formed a separate microphase on the nanoscale. Ozone treatment was used to create nanoporosity in nanostructured epoxy/PI-P4VP blends via selective removal of the PI microphase and lead to nanoporous epoxy thermosets; disordered nanopores with the average diameter of about 60 nm were uniformly distributed in the blend with 50 wt% PI-P4VP. Multi-scale phase separation with a distinctly different morphology was observed at the air/sample interface due to the interfacial effects, whereas only uniform microphase separated morphology at the nanoscale was found in the bulk of the blend.

Nanostructured complexes were prepared from poly(ε-caprolactone)-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PCL-b-P2VP) and poly(4-vinylphenol) (PVPh) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The phase behavior, specific interactions, and morphology were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). In this A-b-B/C type block copolymer/homopolymer system, both blocks of the PCL-b-P2VP block copolymer have favorable intermolecular interaction toward PVPh via hydrogen bonding, but the interaction between P2VP block and PVPh is significantly stronger than that between PCL block and PVPh. It was found that the disparity in competitive intermolecular interactions, specifically PVPh and P2VP block interact strongly whereas PVPh and PCL block interact weakly, leads to the formation of a variety of nanostructures depending on PVPh concentration. Spherical micelles of 30−40 nm in diameter were obtained in the complex with 10 wt % PVPh, followed by wormlike micelles with size in the order of 40−50 nm in the complexes with 30−60 wt % PVPh. At low PVPh concentrations, PCL interacts weakly with PVPh, whereas in the complexes containing more than 20 wt % PVPh, the PCL block began to interact considerably with PVPh, leading to the formation of composition-dependent nanostructures. The complex becomes homogeneous with PVPh content beyond 60 wt %, since a sufficient amount of PVPh is available to form hydrogen bonds with both PCL and P2VP. Finally, a model was proposed to explain the self-assembly and microphase morphology of these complexes based on the experimental results obtained. The competitive hydrogen-bonding interactions cause the self-assembly and formation of different microphase morphologies.

Blends of poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP-b-PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP-b-PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self-assembled nanostructures of the P2VP-b-PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes.

The structures and association properties of thermosensitive block copolymers of poly(methoxyoligo( ethylene glycol) norbornenyl esters) in D2O were investigated by small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Each block is a comblike polymer with a polynorbornene (PNB) backbone and oligo ethylene glycol (OEG) side chains (one side chain per NB repeat unit). The chemical formula of the block copolymer is (OEG3NB) 79- (OEG6.6NB) 67, where subscripts represent the degree of polymerization (DP) of OEG and NB in each block. The polymer concentration was fixed at 2.0 wt % and the structural changes were investigated over a temperature range between 25 and 68°C. It was found that at room temperature polymers associate to form micelles with a spherical core formed by the block (OEG3NB) 79 and corona formed by the block (OEG6.6NB) 67 and that the shape of the polymer in the corona could be described by the form factor of rigid cylinders. At elevated temperatures, the aggregation number increased and the micelles became more compact. At temperatures around the cloud point temperature (CPT) T ) 60 °C a correlation peak started to appear and became pronounced at 68 °C due to the formation of a partially ordered structure with a correlation length ∼349 Å.

The last decades have witnessed significant and rapid progress in polymer chemistry and molecular biology. The invention of PCR and advances in automated solid phase synthesis of DNA have made this biological entity broadly available to all researchers across biological and chemical sciences. Thanks to the development of a variety of polymerization techniques, macromolecules can be synthesized with predetermined molecular weights and excellent structural control. In recent years these two exciting areas of research converged to generate a new type of nucleic acid hybrid material, consisting of oligodeoxynucleotides and organic polymers. By conjugating these two classes of materials, DNA block copolymers are generated exhibiting engineered material properties that cannot be realized with polymers or nucleic acids alone. Different synthetic strategies based on grafting onto routes in solution or on solid support were developed which afforded DNA block copolymers with hydrophilic, hydrophobic and thermoresponsive organic polymers in good yields. Beside the preparation of DNA block copolymers with a relative short DNA-segment, it was also demonstrated how these bioorganic polymers can be synthesized exhibiting large DNA blocks (>1000 bases) applying the polymerase chain reaction. Amphiphilic DNA block copolymers, which were synthesized fully automated in a DNA synthesizer, self-assemble into well-defined nanoparticles. Hybridization of spherical micelles with long DNA templates that encode several times the sequence of the micelle corona induced a transformation into rod-like micelles. The Watson-Crick motif aligned the hydrophobic polymer segments along the DNA double helix, which resulted in selective dimer formation. Even the length of the resulting nanostructures could be precisely adjusted by the number of nucleotides of the templates. In addition to changing the structural properties of DNA-b-PPO micelles, these materials were applied as 3D nanoscopic scaffolds for organic reactions. The DNA strands of the corona were organized by hydrophobic interactions of the organic polymer segments in such a fashion that several DNA-templated organic reactions proceeded in a sequence specific manner; either at the surface of the micelles or at the interface between the biological and the organic polymer blocks. The yields of reactions employing the micellar template were equivalent or better than existing template architectures. Aside from its physical properties and the morphologies achieved, an important requirement for a new biomaterial is its biocompatibility and interaction with living systems, i.e. human cells. The toxicity of the nanoparticles was analyzed by a cell proliferation assay. Motivated by the non-toxic nature of the amphiphilic DNA block copolymers, these nanoobjects were employed as drug delivery vehicles to target the anticancer drug to a tumor tissue. The micelles obtained from DNA block copolymers were easily functionalized with targeting units by hybridization. This facile route allowed studying the effect of the amount of targeting units on the targeting efficacy. By varying the site of functionalization, i.e. 5’ or 3’, the outcome of having the targeting unit at the periphery of the micelle or in the core of the micelle was studied. Additionally, these micelles were loaded with an anticancer drug, doxorubicin, and then applied to tumor cells. The viability of the cells was calculated in the presence and absence of targeting unit. It was demonstrated that the tumor cells bearing folate receptors showed a high mortality when the targeting unit was attached to the nanocarrier.

This article reports thermoset blends of bisphenol A-type epoxy resin (ER) and two amphiphilic four-arm star-shaped diblock copolymers based on hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hydrophobic poly(propylene oxide) (PPO). 4,4'-Methylenedianiline (MDA) was used as a curing agent. The first star-shaped diblock copolymer with 70 wt% ethylene oxide (EO), denoted as (PPO-PEO)(4), consists of four PPO-PEO diblock arms with PPO blocks attached on an ethylenediamine core; the second one with 40 wt% EO, denoted as (PEO-PPO)(4), contains four PEO-PPO diblock arms with PEO blocks attached on an ethylenediamine core. The phase behavior, crystallization, and nanoscale structures were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering. It was found that the MDA-cured ER/(PPO-PEO)(4) blends are not macroscopically phase-separated over the entire blend composition range. There exist, however, two microphases in the ER/(PPO-PEO)(4) blends. The PPO blocks form a separated microphase, whereas the ER and the PEO blocks, which are miscible, form another microphase. The ER/(PPO-PEO)(4) blends show composition-dependent nanostructures on the order of 10-30 nm. The 80/20 ER/(PPO-PEO)(4) blend displays spherical PPO micelles uniformly dispersed in a continuous ER-rich matrix. The 60/40 ER/(PPO-PEO)(4) blend displays a combined morphology of worm-like micelles and spherical micelles with characteristic of a bicontinuous microphase structure. Macroscopic phase separation took place in the MDA-cured ER/(PEO-PPO)(4) blends. The MDA-cured ER/(PEO-PPO)(4) blends with (PEO-PPO)(4) content up to 50 wt% exhibit phase-separated structures on the order of 0.5-1 mu m. This can be considered to be due to the different EO content and block sequence of the (PEO-PPO)(4) copolymer. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The formation of rare flower like micelles in poly(styrene)-block-poly(4-vinyl pyridine)/poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-P4VP/PAA) diblock copolymer/homopolymer complexes is reported. The self-assembly as well as the morphological changes in the complexes were induced by the addition of a high molecular weight PAA/ethanol solution into the PS-b-P4VP solution in dimethyl formamide followed by dialyses. The composition-dependent micelles were varying in size and shape with increase in PAA concentration in solution. The complex aggregates in solution were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) whereas morphologies in the solid complexes were observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Flower like micelles are formed in complexes at 20 wt% PAA concentration followed by 'spikey' micellar assemblies at 40 wt% PAA. The size of the micelles was found to be increased upon the addition of PAA into the block copolymer solution. Infrared studies revealed the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the complementary binding sites on PAA and the P4VP block of the block copolymer. Finally, a model was proposed to explain the self-assembly and morphological transitions in these complexes based on the experimental results obtained.

We demonstrate a new and simple route to fabricate highly dense arrays of hexagonally close packed inorganic nanodots using functional diblock copolymer (PS-b-P4VP) thin films. The deposition of pre-synthesized inorganic nanoparticles selectively into the P4VP domains of PS-b-P4VP thin films, followed by removal of the polymer, led to highly ordered metallic patterns identical to the order of the starting thin film. Examples of Au, Pt and Pd nanodot arrays are presented. The affinity of the different metal nanoparticles towards P4VP chains is also understood by extending this approach to PS-b-P4VP micellar thin films. The procedure used here is simple, eco-friendly, and compatible with the existing silicon-based technology. Also the method could be applied to various other block copolymer morphologies for generating 1-dimensional (1D) and 2-dimensional (2D) structures. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ordered arrays of FePt nanoparticles were prepared using a diblock polymer micellar method combined with plasma treatment. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy analyses reveal that the molar ratios of Fe to Pt in metal-salt-loaded micelles deviate from those when metal precursors are added, and that the plasma treatment processes have little influence upon the compositions of the resulting FePt nanoparticles. The results from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the maximum loadings of FeCl3 and H2PtCl6 inside poly( styrene)-poly(4-vinylpyridine) micelles are different. The composition deviation of FePt nanoparticles is attributed to the fact that one FeCl3 molecule coordinates with a single 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) unit, while two neighboring and uncomplexed 4VP units are required for one H2PtCl6 molecule. Additionally, we demonstrate that the center-to-center distances of the neighboring FePt nanoparticles can also be tuned by varying the drawing velocity.

A new kind of electroactive polymers was synthesized by using aniline pentamer (AP) cross-linking chitosan (CS) in acetic acid/DMSO/DMF solution. UV-vis and CV confirmed the electroactivity of polymers in acidic aqueous solution. The amphiphilic polymers self-assembled into 200-300 nm micelles by dialysis against deionized water from the acetic acid buffer solution. Three samples with different weight percentages of AP were used to identify the relationship between the content of AP and the differentiation of rat neuronal pheochromocytoma PC-12 cells without external stimulation.

The evolution of morphologies of isothermally crystallized thin films with different thicknesses of poly(L-lactide-bethylene oxide) diblock copolymer was observed by optical microscopy (OM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Dendritic superstructures stacked with lamellae were investigated in thin films with similar to 200 nm to similar to 400 nm thickness. The lamellar structure was a lozenge- or truncated-lozenge-shaped single crystal of PLLA confirmed by AFM observations. The contour of the dendritic superstructures is hexagonal, and two types of sectors, [110] and [100], can be classified in terms of the chain-folding and crystal growth directions. These phenomena Are due to the interplay of the crystallization of the PLLA block, the microphase separation of the block copolymer, and the effect of the film thickness.

By using a combinatorial screening method based on the self-consistent field theory (SCFT) for polymer systems, the micro-phase morphologies of the H-shaped (AC)B(CA) ternary block copolymer system are studied in three-dimensional (3D) space. By systematically varying the volume fractions of the components A, B, and C, six triangle phase diagrams of this H-shaped (AC)B(CA) ternary block copolymer system with equal interaction energies among the three components are constructed from the weaker segregation regime to the strong segregation regime, In this study, thirteen 3D micro-phase morphologies for this H-shaped ternary block copolymer system are identified to be stable and seven 3D microphase morphologies are found to be metastable.

Poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PEO-b-PHEMA) was synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) monomer using PEO-Br macroinitiator as initiator, CuBr/CuBr2 and 2,2.-bipyridyl (bpy) as catalyst and ligand. IR, H-1 NMR, and GPC analysis indicate that PEO-b-PHEMA block copolymer with low polydispersity index (M-w/M-n approximate to 1.1) has been formed. Self-assembly of this double hydrophilic block copolymer in the selective solvent and water was also studied. Owing to the high hydrophilic nature of the PEO and PHEMA blocks, this double hydrophilic block copolymer cannot disperse well in water. So block copolymer was modified by part esterification of PEO-b-PHEMA with acetic anhydride, which increased the hydrophobic group of the PHEMA block. The TEM results show that this block copolymer spontaneously form well-defined micelles in water.
