Rats with unilateral lesion of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) have been used as a model of Parkinson`s disease. Depending on the lesion protocol and on the drug challenge, these rats rotate in opposite directions. The aim of the present study was to propose a model to explain how critical factors determine the direction of these turns. Unilateral lesion of the SNpc was induced with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) or 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). Separate analysis showed that neither the type of neurotoxin nor the site of lesion along the nigrostriatal. pathway was able to predict the direction of the turns these rats made after they were challenged with apomorphine. However, the combination of these two factors determined the magnitude of the lesion estimated by tyrosine-hydroxylase immunohistochemistry and HPLC-ED measurement of striatal dopamine. Very small lesions did Dot cause turns, medium-size lesions caused ipsiversive turns, and large lesions caused contraversive turns. Large-size SNpc lesions resulted in an increased binding of [H-3] raclopride to D2 receptors, while medium-size lesions reduced the binding of [H-3]SCH-23390 D1 receptors in the ipsilateral striatum. These results are coherent with the model proposing that after challenged with a dopamine receptor agonist, unilaterally SNpc-lesioned rats rotate toward the side with the weaker activation of dopamine receptors. This activation is weaker on the lesioned side in animals with small SNpc lesions due to the loss of dopamine, but stronger in animals with large lesions due to dopamine receptor supersensitivity. Animals faced with conflicting cues, such as predatory threat and a given rewarding stimulus, must make rapid decisions to engage in defensive versus other appetitive behaviors. The brain mechanisms mediating such responses are poorly understood. However, the periaqueductal gray (PAG) seems particularly suitable for accomplishing this task. The PAG is thought to have, at least, two distinct general roles on the organization of motivated responses, i.e., one on the execution of defensive and reproductive behaviors, and the other on the motivational drive underlying adaptive responses. We have presently examined how the PAG would be involved in mediating the behavioral choice between mutually incompatible behaviors, such as reproduction or defense, when dams are exposed to pups and cat odor. First, we established the behavioral protocol and observed that lactating rats, simultaneously exposed to pups and cat odor, inhibited maternal behavior and expressed clear defensive responses. We have further revealed that cat odor exposure up-regulated Fos expression in the dorsal PAG, and that NMDA cytotoxic lesions therein were able to restore maternal responses, and, at the same time, block defensive responsiveness to cat odor. Potential paths mediating the dorsal PAG influences on the inhibition of appetitive (i.e., retrieving behavior) and consummatory (i.e., nursing) maternal responses are discussed. Overall, we were able to confirm the dual role of the PAG, where, in the present case, the dorsal PAG, apart from organizing defensive responses, also appears to account for the behavioral inhibition of non-defensive responses. Previous studies from our laboratory have documented that the medial hypothalamic defensive system is critically involved in processing actual and contextual predatory threats, and that the dorsal premammillary nucleus (PMd) represents the hypothalamic site most responsive to predatory threats. Anatomical findings suggest that the PMd is in a position to modulate memory processing through a projecting branch to specific thalamic nuclei, i.e., the nucleus reuniens (RE) and the ventral part of the anteromedial nucleus (AMv). In the present study, we investigated the role of these thalamic targets in both unconditioned (i.e., fear responses to predatory threat) and conditioned (i.e., contextual responses to predator-related cues) defensive behaviors. During cat exposure, all experimental groups exhibited intense defensive responses with the animals spending most of the time in the home cage displaying freezing behavior. However, during exposure to the environment previously associated with a cat, the animals with combined RE + AMv lesions, and to a lesser degree, animals with single AMv unilateral lesions, but not animals with single RE lesions, presented a reduction of contextual conditioned defensive responses. Overall, the present results provide clear evidence suggesting that the PMd`s main thalamic targets (i.e., the nucleus reuniens and the AMv) seem to be critically involved in the emotional memory processing related to predator cues. The relationship between sleep and epilepsy is both complex and clinically significant. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) influences sleep architecture, while sleep plays an important role in facilitating and/or inhibiting possible epileptic seizures. The pilocarpine experimental model reproduces several features of human temporal lobe epilepsy and is one of the most widely used models in basic research. The aim of the present study was to characterize, behaviorally and electrophysiologically, the phases of sleep-wake cycles (SWC) in male rats with pilocarpine-induced epilepsy. Epileptic rats presented spikes in all phases of the SWC as well as atypical cortical synchronization during attentive wakefulness and paradoxical sleep. The architecture of the sleep-wake phases was altered in epileptic rats, as was the integrity of the SWC. Because our findings reproduce many relevant features observed in patients with epilepsy, this model is suitable to study sleep dysfunction in epilepsy. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Behavioral sensitization, defined as a progressive increase in the locomotor stimulant effects elicited by repeated exposure to drugs of abuse, has been used as an animal model for drug craving in humans. The mesoaccumbens dopaminergic system has been proposed to be critically involved in this phenomenon; however, few studies have been designed to systematically investigate the effects of dopaminergic antagonists on development and expression of behavioral sensitization to ethanol in Swiss mice. We first tested the effects of D(1) antagonist SCH-23390 (0-0.03 mg/kg) or D(2) antagonist Sulpiride (0-30 mg/kg) on the locomotor responses to an acute injection of ethanol (2.0 g/kg). Results showed that all tested doses of the antagonists were effective in blocking ethanol`s stimulant effects. In another set of experiments, mice were pretreated intraperitoneally with SCH-23390 (0.01 mg/kg) or Sulpiride (10 mg/kg) 30 min before saline or ethanol injection, for 21 days. Locomotor activity was measured weekly for 20 min. Four days following this pretreatment, all mice were challenged with ethanol. Both antagonists attenuated the development of ethanol sensitization, but only SCH-23390 blocked the expression of ethanol sensitization according to this protocol. When we tested a single dose (30 min before tests) of either antagonist in mice treated chronically with ethanol, both antagonists attenuated ethanol-induced effects. The present findings demonstrate that the concomitant administration of ethanol with D(1) but not D(2) antagonist prevented the expression of ethanol sensitization, suggesting that the neuroadaptations underlying ethanol behavioral sensitization depend preferentially on D(1) receptor actions. Voluntary physical activity improves memory and learning ability in rodents, whereas status epilepticus has been associated with memory impairment. Physical activity and seizures have been associated with enhanced hippocampal expression of BDNF, indicating that this protein may have a dual role in epilepsy. The influence of voluntary physical activity on memory and BDNF expression has been poorly studied in experimental models of epilepsy. In this paper, we have investigated the effect of voluntary physical activity on memory and BDNF expression in mice with pilocarpine-incluced epilepsy. Male Swiss mice were assigned to four experimental groups: pilocarpine sedentary (PS), pilocarpine runners (PRs), saline sedentary (SS) and saline runners (SRs). Two days after pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus, the affected mice (PR) and their running controls (SR) were housed with access to a running wheel for 28 days. After that, the spatial memory and the expression of the precursor and mature forms of hippocampal BDNF were assessed. PR mice performed better than PS mice in the water maze test. In addition, PR mice had a higher amount of mature BDNF (14 kDa) relative to the total BDNF (14 kDa + 28 kDa + 32 kDa forms) content when compared with PS mice. These results show that voluntary physical activity improved the spatial memory and increased the hippocampal content of mature BDNF of mice with pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus. A modified version of the social habituation/dis-habituation paradigm was employed to examine social recognition memory in Wistar rats during two opposing (active and inactive) circadian phases, using different intertrial intervals (30 and 60 min). Wheel-running activity was monitored continuously to identify circadian phase. To avoid possible masking effects of the light-dark cycle, the rats were synchronized to a skeleton photoperiod, which allowed testing during different circadian phases under identical lighting conditions. In each trial, an infantile intruder was introduced into an adult`s home-cage for a 5-minute interaction session, and social behaviors were registered. Rats were exposed to 5 trials per day for 4 consecutive days: oil days I and 2, each resident was exposed to the same intruder; on days 3 and 4, each resident was exposed to a different intruder in each trial. I he resident`s social investigatory behavior was more intense when different intruders were presented compared to repeated presentation of the same intruder, suggesting social recognition memory. This effect was stronger when the rats were tested during the inactive phase and when the intertrial interval was 60 min, These findings Suggest that social recognition memory, as evaluated in this modified habituation/dis-habituation paradigm, is influenced by the circadian rhythm phase during which testing is performed, and by intertrial interval. Among lampyrids, intraspecific sexual communication is facilitated by spectral correspondence between visual sensitivity and bioluminescence emission from the single lantern in the tail. Could a similar strategy be utilized by the elaterids (click beetles), which have one ventral abdominal and two dorsal prothoracic lanterns? Spectral sensitivity [S(lambda)] and bioluminescence were investigated in four Brazilian click beetle species Fulgeochlizus bruchii, Pyrearinus termitilluminans, Pyrophorus punctatissimus and P. divergens, representing three genera. In addition, in situ microspectrophotometric absorption spectra were obtained for visual and screening pigments in P. punctatissimus and P. divergens species. In all species, the electroretinographic S(lambda) functions showed broad peaks in the green with a shoulder in the near-ultraviolet, suggesting the presence of short- and long-wavelength receptors in the compound eyes. The long-wavelength receptor in Pyrophorus species is mediated by a P540 rhodopsin in conjunction with a species-specific screening pigment. A correspondence was found between green to yellow bioluminescence emissions and its broad S(lambda) maximum in each of the four species. It is hypothesized that in elaterids, bioluminescence of the abdominal lantern is an optical signal for intraspecifc sexual communication, while the signals from the prothoracic lanterns serve to warn predators and may also provide illumination in flight.

My research aims to understand how and why fundamentalists justify violence against people who do not fit their profile of "righteous" or "saved" persons, such as abortion doctors and clinic workers, gays and lesbians, and Jews. The first section of this paper travels through the history of fundamentalism since its origins in the British and American apocalipticism, or belief in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. However, my history of Protestant Fundamentalism in the United States will focus on the ways in which Fundamentalism developed in response to many changes in American social structure. I interpret Fundamentalism as an anti-modern movement seeking to reassert "traditional" Christian values.

What existential premises, what artifacts are walked through to make it possible for a person to step assuredly in reality? What scope exists for the frame shape? Are there doorways all peoples have to frame, and is there a limited stock to choose from? These were questions motivating the research which this paper reports.

A proposta deste estudo é relatar a utilização da arte e seus segmentos, como recurso para inclusão da criança portadora de necessidades especiais ao ambiente odontológico. Foi utilizado como método a aplicação da arte em atividades de socioterapia e oficinas, divididas em módulos: sessão de socialização, oficinas de arte e atividades complementares, visando à elaboração de uma anamnese cultural por meio de questionários e a obtenção das preferências artísticas dos 313 participantes, previamente às suas assistências odontológicas no CAOE (Centro de Assistência Odontológica a Portadores de Necessidades Especiais) FOA/Unesp. de acordo com os questionários respondidos, a música e a pintura, segundo a preferência dos participantes, são os segmentos artísticos que mais auxiliam nas atividades de inclusão e adaptação. Concluímos que a utilização da arte na adaptação e inclusão ambiental do paciente, previamente à assistência odontológica, é favorável e eficaz.

The listing task, a method used in social and behavioral sciences, is frequently used in ethnobotanical research to constructfolk taxonomies and select relevant itemsfor subsequent research. The objective of the present study was to determine whether visual stimuli are associated with responses to the theme plants or if context influences the answers. Interviews were conducted with 400 women in Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil, in four different locations: three with a visible presence of plants (a plant store, a supermarket, and a public plaza) and one with no plants (a street corner in the center of the city). The women were asked to name plants. Analysis indicates that visual stimuli influenced responses and that this is more marked in the plant store than in the other locations. The plants cited most often-roses, orchids, ferns, violets, and daisies-were, with little variation, the same in all the locales studied.

As abordagens analítico-comportamentais da linguagem ainda não conseguiram fornecer um tratamento conceitual e empírico adequado dos comportamentos verbais complexos. Uma proposta funcionalista recente que vem abordando repertórios complexos na aquisição e no desenvolvimento da linguagem é a teoria da aquisição da linguagem baseada no uso, de Tomasello e cols. Esta teoria vem se desenvolvendo no interior de uma análise mais ampla de Tomasello e cols. sobre a evolução da cognição humana. Nesta proposta, a compreensão e o compartilhamento da intencionalidade são elementos-chave para o desenvolvimento cognitivo e linguístico humano. E é justamente o uso do conceito de intencionalidade o que tem produzido as principais críticas a esta proposta, principalmente, enquanto possibilidade de representar um retorno às propostas mentalistas sobre cognição e linguagem. Com base nisso, o presente trabalho procurou: (1) analisar a proposta de Tomasello e cols. sobre a evolução da cognição humana e a relação entre essa proposta e a aquisição e o desenvolvimento da linguagem – analisando, especificamente, o papel do conceito de intencionalidade nessa proposta e a relação entre intencionalidade e linguagem; (2) analisar o tratamento do conceito de intencionalidade nos trabalhos de John R. Searle e de Daniel C. Dennett, comparando-o com o proposto por Tomasello e cols., segundo os critérios de (a) definição de intencionalidade e (b) relação entre intencionalidade e linguagem; e (3) analisar o tratamento que o conceito de intencionalidade tem recebido na Análise do Comportamento, comparandoo com o proposto por Tomasello e cols, segundo os mesmos critérios (a) e (b). Esperava-se que estas análises permitissem um maior esclarecimento sobre o uso do conceito de intencionalidade na proposta de Tomasello e cols. e uma aproximação dessa proposta com um referencial analítico-comportamental, i.e., sem recorrer a entidades mentais como elementos explicativos da cognição e da linguagem. Tomasello e cols. propõem que a cognição humana é um tipo de cognição primata, derivada de adaptações biológicas característica dos primatas em geral para compreender os outros intencionalmente, em termos de ações, percepções, estados emocionais e objetivos, além de uma motivação exclusivamente humana para compartilhar intencionalidade com os outros. A partir dessas características, os humanos se tornaram capazes de se engajar em atividades de colaboração relacionadas à cognição cultural (envolvendo a criação e o uso de símbolos lingüísticos e matemáticos, artefatos culturais, tecnologias, práticas culturais e instituições sociais), que alteraram profundamente os modos de interação social da espécie humana, permitindo a ela acumular e modificar conhecimentos ao longo da história e transmitir esses conhecimentos para as gerações posteriores. Considerando a análise dos usos do conceito de intencionalidade nas propostas de Tomasello e cols, Searle, Dennett e da Análise do Comportamento, foi possível estabelecer uma relação entre as propostas de Tomasello e cols. e de Dennett, ambas caracterizando a intencionalidade como um conjunto de habilidades cognitivo-comportamentais dos organismos, resultante da história evolutiva das espécies. Contudo, foi possível relacionar o uso do o conceito de intencionalidade nas propostas de Searle e da Análise do Comportamento com o conceito de intencional na proposta de Tomasello e cols., ambos significando uma propriedade referencial (i.e., estar relacionado com) de certos fenômenos em relação a aspectos do mundo. No que concerne à relação entre intencionalidade e linguagem, as propostas de Tomasello e cols., Searle e de Dennett destacam a importância da interação da intencionalidade com a linguagem para a evolução da cognição humana propriamente dita. Contudo, Tomasello e cols. se aproximam mais do modelo de Searle, ao sugerirem que a linguagem simbólica é uma habilidade comportamental humana derivada da intencionalidade. Dennett, por outro lado, se contrapõe a essa hipótese, afirmando que intencionalidade e linguagem simbólica são dois fenômenos comportamentais distintos que co-evoluíram e passaram a interagir em certo momento da história evolutiva da espécie humana. Em geral, o presente trabalho sugere que os principais conceitos utilizados na proposta de Tomasello e cols. sobre a evolução da cognição humana e, especificamente, na teoria da aquisição da linguagem baseada no uso, são compatíveis com alguns conceitos aplicados em outras áreas do conhecimento, como a filosofia da mente e as ciências do comportamento. Em adição, o presente trabalho também possibilitou uma aproximação da proposta de Tomasello e cols. com um referencial analíticocomportamental. Sugere-se que (i) a adoção de um vocabulário analítico-comportamental pode contribuir para abordar os fenômenos contemplados na proposta de Tomasello e cols., evitando a recorrência a pressupostos mentalistas; e, (ii) a proposta de Tomasello e cols. pode oferecer relevantes contribuições para a Análise do Comportamento, no que se refere à investigação de processos simbólicos, principalmente, a aquisição e o desenvolvimento da linguagem simbólica, na medida em que esta proposta tem investigado processos simbólicos mais complexos do que aqueles tradicionalmente investigados na Análise do Comportamento.
