The main purpose of this paper is to propose and test a model to assess the degree of conditions favorability in the adoption of agile methods to develop software where traditional methods predominate. In order to achieve this aim, a survey was applied on software developers of a Brazilian public retail bank. Two different statistical techniques were used in order to assess the quantitative data from the closed questions in the survey. The first, exploratory factorial analysis validated the structure of perspectives related to the agile model of the proposed assessment. The second, frequency distribution analysis to categorize the answers. Qualitative data from the survey opened question were analyzed with the technique of qualitative thematic content analysis. As a result, the paper proposes a model to assess the degree of favorability conditions in the adoption of Agile practices within the context of the proposed study.

The Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) research area is increasingly investigated due to its high potential in reducing the maintenance costs and in ensuring the systems safety in several industrial application fields. A growing demand of new SHM systems, permanently embedded into the structures, for savings in weight and cabling, comes from the aeronautical and aerospace application fields. As consequence, the embedded electronic devices are to be wirelessly connected and battery powered. As result, a low power consumption is requested. At the same time, high performance in defects or impacts detection and localization are to be ensured to assess the structural integrity. To achieve these goals, the design paradigms can be changed together with the associate signal processing. The present thesis proposes design strategies and unconventional solutions, suitable both for real-time monitoring and periodic inspections, relying on piezo-transducers and Ultrasonic Guided Waves. In the first context, arrays of closely located sensors were designed, according to appropriate optimality criteria, by exploiting sensors re-shaping and optimal positioning, to achieve improved damages/impacts localisation performance in noisy environments. An additional sensor re-shaping procedure was developed to tackle another well-known issue which arises in realistic scenario, namely the reverberation. A novel sensor, able to filter undesired mechanical boundaries reflections, was validated via simulations based on the Green's functions formalism and FEM. In the active SHM context, a novel design methodology was used to develop a single transducer, called Spectrum-Scanning Acoustic Transducer, to actively inspect a structure. It can estimate the number of defects and their distances with an accuracy of 2[cm]. It can also estimate the damage angular coordinate with an equivalent mainlobe aperture of 8[deg], when a 24[cm] radial gap between two defects is ensured. A suitable signal processing was developed in order to limit the computational cost, allowing its use with embedded electronic devices.

Ohjelmistotestaus on suuri ja kasvava kustannuserä ohjelmistotuotannossa. Kirjallisuudessa mainittu ohjelmistotestauksen kustannusten osuus on noin 50% ohjelmistokehityshankkeiden budjetista. Tutkimusmateriaali on kerätty haastattelemalla26 organisaatioyksikön edustajia. Näiden organisaatioyksiköiden joukosta on edelleen valittu viisi organisaatioyksikköä lähempään tarkasteluun. Työssä havaittiin muun muassa, että tuotesuuntautuneessa ohjelmistokehityksessä tietämystä on vaivattomampi kodifioida. Esimerkiksi testitapausten määrittäminen ennakkoon on tällöin helpompaa. Kodifiointi mahdollistaa myös testauksen laajamittaisen ulkoistamisen, sillä kodifioitua tietämystä on helpompi välittää. Räätälöityjen järjestelmien testaamisessa tarvittava tietämys vaikuttaa olevan suurelta osin hiljaista, esimerkiksi sovellusalueosaaminen painottuu enemmän.

Oliopohjainen lähestymistapa on varsin uusi toimintaperiaate käytännön ohjelmistotuotantoprosesseissa. Oliopohjaisen mallinnuksen todetaan sopivan hyvin tarkastellun tuotepohjaisen ohjelmiston kehitykseen. Tarkasteltavan tuotteen kehityksen pääpaino on uudelleenkäytettävyydellä, jota oliopohjainen mallintaminen erityisesti tukee.

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) has quickly become the industry standard for object-oriented software development. It is being widely used in organizations and institutions around the world. However, UML is often found to be too complex for novice systems analysts. Although prior research has identified difficulties novice analysts encounter in learning UML, no viable solution has been proposed to address these difficulties. Sequence-diagram modeling, in particular, has largely been overlooked. The sequence diagram models the behavioral aspects of an object-oriented software system in terms of interactions among its building blocks, i.e. objects and classes. It is one of the most commonly-used UML diagrams in practice. However, there has been little research on sequence-diagram modeling. The current literature scarcely provides effective guidelines for developing a sequence diagram. Such guidelines will be greatly beneficial to novice analysts who, unlike experienced systems analysts, do not possess relevant prior experience to easily learn how to develop a sequence diagram. There is the need for an effective sequence-diagram modeling technique for novices. This dissertation reports a research study that identified novice difficulties in modeling a sequence diagram and proposed a technique called CHOP (CHunking, Ordering, Patterning), which was designed to reduce the cognitive load by addressing the cognitive complexity of sequence-diagram modeling. The CHOP technique was evaluated in a controlled experiment against a technique recommended in a well-known textbook, which was found to be representative of approaches provided in many textbooks as well as practitioner literatures. The results indicated that novice analysts were able to perform better using the CHOP technique. This outcome seems have been enabled by pattern-based heuristics provided by the technique. Meanwhile, novice analysts rated the CHOP technique more useful although not significantly easier to use than the control technique. The study established that the CHOP technique is an effective sequence-diagram modeling technique for novice analysts.

Consider the statement "this project should cost X and has risk of Y". Such statements are used daily in industry as the basis for making decisions. The work reported here is part of a study aimed at providing a rational and pragmatic basis for such statements. Of particular interest are predictions made in the requirements and early phases of projects. A preliminary model has been constructed using Bayesian Belief Networks and in support of this, a programme to collect and study data during the execution of various software development projects commenced in May 2002. The data collection programme is undertaken under the constraints of a commercial industrial regime of multiple concurrent small to medium scale software development projects. Guided by pragmatism, the work is predicated on the use of data that can be collected readily by project managers; including expert judgements, effort, elapsed times and metrics collected within each project.

ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to study how to develop a computer application implementing numerical algorithms to assess hydrodynamic features of geometrical models of vessels. It is therefore to propose a methodology for software development applied to an hydrodynamic problem, in order to evaluate different study alternatives by varying different parameters related to the problem and to be capable of providing results for analysis. As a concrete application of the program it has been chosen to implement the algorithms necessary for evaluating the appearance of parametric rolling in a vessel. In the analysis of this problem it is considered of interest the geometrical representation of the hull of the ship and other elements which have decisive influence in this phenomena, such as the sea situation and the loading condition. Ideally, the application would determine the roll angle that occurs when a ship is on waves of different characteristics. It aims to prepare a program by using the paradigm of object oriented programming. I think it is the best methodology to modularize the program. My intention is to show how face the global process of developing an application from the initial specification until the final release of the program. The process will keep in mind the spefici objetives of usability and the possibility of growing in the scope of the software. This work intends to apply software development to a particular aspect the area of knowledge of hydrodynamics. It is not intended to provide new algorithms for solving problems of hydrodynamics, but designing a set of software objects that implement existing solutions to these problems. This is essentially a job software rather than hydrodynamic. The novelty of this thesis stands in this work focuses in describing how to apply the whole proccess of software engineering to hydrodinamics problems. The choice of the prediction of parametric balance as the main objetive to be applied to is because this concept is one of the elements involved in the evaluation of the intact stability criteria of second generation. Therefore, I consider this study as relevant usefull for the future application in the field of shipbuilding.

Most parametric software cost estimation models used today evolved in the late 70's and early 80's. At that time, the dominant software development techniques being used were the early 'structured methods'. Since then, several new systems development paradigms and methods have emerged, one being Jackson Systems Development (JSD). As current cost estimating methods do not take account of these developments, their non-universality means they cannot provide adequate estimates of effort and hence cost. In order to address these shortcomings two new estimation methods have been developed for JSD projects. One of these methods JSD-FPA, is a top-down estimating method, based on the existing MKII function point method. The other method, JSD-COCOMO, is a sizing technique which sizes a project, in terms of lines of code, from the process structure diagrams and thus provides an input to the traditional COCOMO method. The JSD-FPA method allows JSD projects in both the real-time and scientific application areas to be costed, as well as the commercial information systems applications to which FPA is usually applied. The method is based upon a three-dimensional view of a system specification as opposed to the largely data-oriented view traditionally used by FPA. The method uses counts of various attributes of a JSD specification to develop a metric which provides an indication of the size of the system to be developed. This size metric is then transformed into an estimate of effort by calculating past project productivity and utilising this figure to predict the effort and hence cost of a future project. The effort estimates produced were validated by comparing them against the effort figures for six actual projects. The JSD-COCOMO method uses counts of the levels in a process structure chart as the input to an empirically derived model which transforms them into an estimate of delivered source code instructions.
